Judge Van Leuven has served two terms as county judge of Nowata county, in which capacity he was in a position demanding a knowledge of the law governing the rights of citizens belonging to the Indian tribes. He is thoroughly conversant with the rights of freedmen on the Kern-Clifton roll of the Cherokee Nation, and their children and is in a position to handle any claims they have under the very recent decision of the court of claims, of the United States, which establishes the rights of many freedmen whose claims have heretofore been doubtful. Judge Van Leuven was for three years in charge of the Cherokee Allotment Contest Division of the Dawes Commission. It is the desire of Judge Van Leuven that all those citizens referred to above who have not had their cases attended in a thoroughly professional manner, read their names and addresses into him at Nowata, and he will be pleased to look into each case and give advice that will be valuable to those who have or have not rights under this recent act. --- LAWRENCE, KANSAS. Hon W W Fischer of Kansas City, Kan. gave a lecture Tuesday evening at St. John church on the Human Tongue. Mr. Fischer broke the record for orators. He ably handled his subject and was through in half an hour. It is to be hoped that our orators will follow after Hon. Mrs. Lester in that capacity and first have something to say, say it and sit down. Miss Ora Carter entertained a view of her friends Thursday evening in honor of Mr. N. Westfield or University of Nebraska. The Electoral College of Kansas Conference met at St. James A M B church and had the best attendance of any previous year. Delegates elected were Prof. A. Grazz from Western University, and Hon. W. W. Frechet from Kansas City, Kan. Mrs. A. P. Potwood is entertaining the Misses Person of Missouri. WINFIELD, KANSAS. Miss Maude Young left Sunday for Bismarck after a pleasant visit with her aunt, Mrs. S. Johnson. The Young People's Industrial Union went to Arkansas City Wednesday night and rendered a program of Pyramid Hall. Mrs. Lula Summers made her annual visit to Damon County Wednesday evening. Mrs. Mine Overstreet gave her last initial last Wednesday evening at St. James A M B church to a packed house. Miss Overstreet will deserved the name that is given her, "Making Bird of Kansas." She will graduate in music next year. Mr. Isaiah Usemby of Topka visited Russell Brown last Sunday and Monday. Preston Smith of Topka Sunday in Lawrence. The funeral was held from the house Monday. E. J. Crow officiating Mrs. Grant died to leave the world for a better one. She lost, but by song won. Mr. Jason M. is able to be up again about the latter. Miss Ory Carter was the guest on Mrs Hattie Ingalls at McKinson from India over Sunday. She visited the schools while there. Reports on enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs Charles Brown have in nomineed the marriage of their daughter, Eva to Mr. I. A. Jones at Robertsville, Mo., on May 10.
