Manager Griffin Tells of Some of Her Real Enterprising Business Firms and Promoters.
Guthrie is a growing city filled with an activity that would do credit to a city five times its size. The business men are alive, wide awake and enterprising, and nothing that will boom or boost Guthrie escapes their ever watchful eye.
14
THE BROWN DRY GOODS CO. stands second to none in the great southwest. It is one of Guthrie's most enterprising stores where one can go and trade and be treated with the highest respect from the fact that they employ a large corps of good, competent, police clerks who take pride in serving any and all customers
This store carries everything in the line of ready to wear garments of the highest and best quality, thus making it the proper place to buy goods at right prices. This store is known throughout the country for honest, fair, square dealing with all customers which method has made them a large and growing trade among the best buyers in this section.
It is a pleasure to visit this store and meet such an excellent business man as Mr. J. A. Brown, who serves great credit for managing and operating such an enterprise as the Brown Dry Goods company. He is a polished gentleman in every sense the term implies as can be readily seen by his courteous treatment when one enters his mammoth store. He is one of those forward, enthusiastic, business boosters who has contributed much to the city's growth and prosperity. Give as more men like Mr. Brown, and we will have a greater city. He is one of Gustwick's real live wires.

THE F. O. LUTZ DRY GOODS company is the largest department store in Southwest Oklahoma and is known throughout the state for square, fair dealing with everybody regardless of creed, color or religion. They have built up one of the largest trades of any store in the state. It is a store where a child can trade and receive as much pain and attention as grown people. The men at the head of this large and growing enterprise are close buyers and therefore can afford to sell to the consumer at a much less figure than most anyone else engaged in the same line of business—especially smaller concerns. The store is well patronized by the best buyers of the colored race and all have a good word to say for this giagantic enterprise which has contributed so much to the growth and prosperity of Gothale and surrounding country.
We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. F. O. Lutr, president of this magnificent concern and we were never more courteously treated in our life. He is unassuming, easy to approach and always ready to discuss matters pertaining to busi-ness with anyone. He has all

times been a liberal contributor to any cause that had for its object the advancement and prosperity of Guthrie and her people, and we cheerfully recommend his store to our many readers as a splendid place to trade and be treated with courtesy and respect
Mr. F. W. Lutz, vice president, is a gentleman of class, culture and refinement and the moment one enters the store, he is as eager to serve you as any of the clerks. He delights in furnishing what ever information pertaining to the store one may desire, and to his executive ability is due much of the store's growth and prosperity.

THE HIRCUH HARDWARE
store is one of the largest and most complete in the state and with such a splendid business man as Mr Hirchi at its head, it is no wonder that the store has made such a magnificent success. He is one of those dignified, polished gentlemen—highly educated, cultured and refined. He is broad and liberal in his views and in business transactions accorded a colored man the same rights and respect as he does the white. He is one of those liberal spenders and ever ready to dig down deep into his pocket and contribute to any enterprise that will bring prosperity to Guthrie and surrendering country. Thus his store has become headquarters for most of the farmers in this and adjacent communities. For more than twenty years Mr. Hirchi has been engaged in the hardware business and has built up an enviable reputation for honesty and fair dealing with all men regardless of race, creed or religion. He has a large trade among the colored people throughout the country and he is one of those men who does not hesitate to tell you that he appreciates their trade and every colored patron will tell you in return that it is a pleasure to trade at this store. Mr. Hirchi is a young man just in the prime of life and a native of Illinois. We recommend this store to our many readers as the proper place to trade.

HOOVER BROTHERS
have the best service in the livery line to be found in Guthrie. "A Square Deal" is their motto, and they stick to it. They keep at all times, rigs for all classes of service. If you care to take a trip to the country or go upon a fishing trip, the Hoover Bros. have the rigs that will suit you. Everything about this place is carefully kept and the charges are no more than the other fellow gets for poor service. When you are in Guthrie, call around and see the Hoover Bros. Tell them you read their ad. in THE PLAINDEALER, and they will treat you right and you will not be sorry that you met them.

KINGI'S?ER
is a live, progressive city with enterprising business men and industrious citizens. The merchants are courteous, polite and obliging and enjoy a large and increasing trade among the colored people.

THE OKLAHOMA MILL CO., of Kingfisher furnishes an excellent market for all the grain raised in this vicinity, thus drawing a lot of substantial trade to the city that would not otherwise come. They manufacture a brand of flour, the "U. 8." advertised in this paper as "The Flour for Particular People—Always the Same." This flour is a home product that the company is proud of and which they are pushing for the hotel and restaurant trade, where quality counts and is appreciated, and they are getting results. The "U. 8" is fast becoming the leading brand of Oklahoma.
FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF KINGFISHER
is the leading bank of the town The president of the institution is ex Governor A. J. Seay, formerly of Missouri and formerly governor of the Territory of Oklahoma in the early days. This bank is a libe al dispenser to the needs of the farmers in this section and their capital and surplus of $60,000 is a showing for them that speaks well for the strength of the concern Mr. Patten, the cashier, is a very gleasant gentleman to meet and do business with. He has many warm friends in Kingfisher and his acquaintance in the county with conditions generally, makes him a valuable man in the affairs of the institution.

JUDGE BERT VAN LEUVEN, of Nowata, Okla. whose ad. appears elsewhere in this issue, is one of the very prominent attorneys of the state and a native of Iowa. Judge Van Leuven has served two terms as county judge of Nowata county, in which capacity he was in a position demanding a knowledge of the law governing the rights of citizens belonging to the Indian tribes. He is thoroughly conversant with the rights of freedmen on the Kern-Clifton roll of the Cherokee Nation, and their children and is in a position to handle any claims they have under the very recent decision of the court of claims, of the United States, which establishes the rights of many freedmen whose claims have heretofore been doubtful. Judge Van Leuven was for three years in charge of the Cherokee Allotment Contest Division of the Dawes Commission. It is the desire of Judge Van Leuven that all those citizens referred to above who have not had their cases attended in a thoroughly professional manner, read their names and addresses into him at Nowata, and he will be pleased to look into each case and give advice that will be valuable to those who have or have not rights under this recent act.

Walter Evans Raps Butchinson Mothers
Says Women Accompany Their Daughters to Deng of Vice in the Salt City.
Mr Litton. There after the space I speak of countrys among our people an of the opinion that a miromary could be used to give advantage in a country, especially in Hutton. I have seen mother grief with their daughter when the have come into the world to meet me I have a good time. I have seen mothers and their daughters go to rooming houses and take rooms with men, and, by the way, they are supposed to be Christians, too. I believe that if there is anything on earth that is destroying the young girls and boys in these damnable rooming houses They permit men to bring your daughter and my daughter and know that they are not married to each other, and rent them rooms for immoral conduct.
Down in the back woods of Mississippi wher. I was born I used to hear the old song, "Help us to help each other. Lord." That old song is not being sung any more. Neither are our people helping each other up. But they are there when it comes to lying on each other and pulling each other down.
This state is full of men who have taken the daughter of some good family and put them on the street to hustle for them while they play pool and shoot crape They want you to welcome there to your homes and allow them to go with your daughters and wives.
I think it is time the people were working up. Don't let your daughters stay out late without your knowing where they are. Some people think that whatever their children do it all right.
It has got to the point now that if one dies it is a hard matter to get people to sit up with the deceased, and you have to give them a good race talk before they are willing to act as pall-bearers without pay.
I can remember that if a girl was a mother before she was married she was canter but now they don't get into more with they are the mother of two or three children. Then they are leaders in church and everywhere else there is a remedy for such distress.
