Our first step was at The home of the State Normal. There are several colored students in attendance, doing fine. Miss Gertie Owens of Topeka will finish this term. She is teaching the sixth and seventh grades in permanship, and showing proficiency in the work. We found the city growing, parting in street cars. Much of her growth is due to the teachers work of O. M. Wilkins, propricer at the Minsay, one of the best hotees in the state. In this town you but really every colored man at work Rev. S. H. Gibson, pastor of the baptist church, is a first class carpenter and his craft is a number of houses to be built this year. He employs several men. The Amsterdams are also carpenters, doing lots of work. Grace Tipton, son of the late David Tipton, is engaged in the work of moving houses. He employs a number of men and is making money. Alex Reeves and Sons are making and laying carpets. They also make a specialty of clerical work, Mr. Reeves being a fine penman Young Lawyer Making Good Robert Buchanan McWilliams, attorney and counselor at law, office Sor North Main street, Young's building, in the man of the hour in the Peerless City of the plains. He is revolutionizing things in the south west and northern Oklahoma. He came to Wichita a few months ago, hung out his shingle to the public, and so and town had never seen a colored lawyer, white and black began to see what was in him. The first case he had he at once demonstrated to the public that he was the kind of president that the late president Benjamin Harrison said he wanted when a colored delegation called upon him for the appointment of colored men on the bench. He said to them he wanted a man well versed in the law. Had Mcbern in the field at that time he could have filled the bill. He is recognized in courts as the equal of any lawyer in Wichita. They make it home like for them. 10. Let reading time. Bert Rich has change of the sanitary department and is cleaning up the city. He also has a nice pool hall. Mrs. Kevy Helm is our correspondent. She is a little lady about fourteen and takes much interest. Read her reports. Mrs. R. A. Allen, secretary of the Baptist convention, is one of business is just immense. He is called upon to defend the enforced people in Northern Oklahoma against the outrages of money sharks and land grafters. He has saved thousands of dollars for his clients in that state He defended a coered woman at Mulvane a few weeks ago, who shot at a white man who had insulted her. He was a contractor and the big man of the town. Not only did he cause the court to release her by his masterful plea, but the crowd of prejudiced whites were excited to sympathy in her behalf. Mr Mc Williams was congratulated for the able and dignified manner of hand ling the case He is Chesterfieldian, well read, and posted up to date on all late Supreme court decisions. He is a graduate of Kansas university. Colored people are succeeding in buying homes. II. Brooks is preparing to enlarge his business block; he has made several improvements. His nine room house, floated in a fine part of the city, in a beautiful place. He stands well financially and is a representative of the progressive colored man. Andy Sims is conducting a fine cafe and lunch counter at his old stand, 420 Main People can't re- sist the desire to stop, eat and chat in this attractive place. He well known and popular with all. Rev. Nichols of the North Missouri conference has charge of the A. M. E. church and is doing hue Presiding Elder Wooten lives here, having purchased a home. George Saunders, the barber, has a large patronage, and in fact, is always right W D Harrison, and his mother are using the incubator to great success; his father is gardening on a large scale. Walter W. Evans, per cent pendent, is in the police department. He is the live wre of Hutchinson. We visited the reformatory, and found everything in good working order. The officials were out and we did not get what we wanted to know about the inmates. We think the officers should place a colored boy or two in each of the departments. They should not single out the laundry, kitchen and lake shop for them. Put the young Afro-Americans on the farm, teach them to care for stock, cut stone, make and repair shoes and clothes, and put several in the clerk at department. Hutchinson has one doctor, one lawyer, no groceries; there is room for development along business lines. WILLIAMS Is a growing city; work good. He and his Anglo Saxon wife are enjoying life to the fullest. Rev. Fish back was the officiating minister. The 'Makon' Eye Drug Co is doing well Dr Wright, the popular druggist is with the company. Paul P. de has the best business that we know of—the making and laying of carpets. Coleman, who owns a fine pool hall at 533 North Main street is climbing the ladder of fame at a rapid pace. He owns a fine cottage and is doing a good paying business, also property in Parsons. Starting out for himself a few years ago without a dollar, by constant work he is now able to breathe easy and look every man in the face. He is a P. of uniform rank, a member of the Commercial club and Young Men's Social club. He has a fine rooming house and lunch couzter in connection with his business. He has many friends; is kind and adable, and a gentleman in every respect. Mrs John Hall, the industrious, comely widow, has all the work in the hairdressing and manicuring line. He has played this city several times with the Original Tennessee and has many warm friends here. W. W. Shobe, Grand Master of the Odd Fellows was in the city Saturday to attend the annual sermon of the lodge. He was invited to be present and address the brethren. He is well liked by the brethren, in fact, all of Topeka is glad to welcome him to the city at any time. An excellent program was rendered Thursday evening of last week at St. John A. M. E. church by Mme. Neale Hawkins Buckner and Mr. M. Edward Atkinson. A large and appreciative audience was present and felt fully benefitted from having attended. George Thomas, thirty-six years of age, died in Kansas City last week. He was reared in Topeka and many friends remember him and regret to learn of his death. He was an in dustrious young man, having been employed for several years in a first class hotel, and at the time of his death was in the Pullman service. He had been ill for the past two years. His remains were brought to Topeka and interwed in Mt Calvary cemetery. Mr. Thomas is survived by a wife and one child, four sisters and his mother. He was a native of Tennessee. Dr W T. Odd Fellows Sermon The Grond United Order of Odd Fellows held their 68th annual sermon at the First African Baptist church Sunday afternoon. The procession moved from the hall at 618 Kansas avenue headed by Jackson's Military banp followed by the militant Patriarchs all gaily uniformed which was very imposing Over 200 members of Shawnee and Exodus and Shawnee lodges and the Jouveniles and Household of Ruth beautifully attired thronged the church. Sir Jackson was master of ceremonies. Several beautiful selections were rendered by the choir and also the band and Mrs. Tolbert, who posses a sweet voice. A poem by Miss Jackson was enjoyed. Grand Master Shobe of Salina, was introduced to the audience and gave an interesting bit of history of the order from Peter Ogdon down to his administration. tHe said the order was growing rapidly—all claims paid and money in bank. He praised the ladies and said they were the life of the order. Rev, Dr. J. R. Ransom preached the sermon and it was a master effort. LAWRENCE, KANSAS. Hon. W. W. Ischer of Kansas City, Kan. gave a lecture Tuesday evening at St. John church on the Human Tongue. Mr. Ischer broke the record for orators. He ably handled his subject and was through in half an hour. It is to be hoped that our orators will follow after Hon. Fitzgerald, Ga., April 9.—Between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning 100 men and boys were at a hotel where there were three colored delegates, who were attending the annual encampment of G. A. R. Department of the Carolina, Georgia and 11 bodies, dragged the Negro delegates from their beds, forced them to dress and carried them into the street. After whipping the Negroes and cutting the G. A. R. buttons from their coats, the mob ordered them to leave town at once. The Negroes left. The mob then proceeded to the residence of Mr. Nelson, past commander of the department, and manhandled the veteran, striking him several times, shots being fired during the fight. The police declare the attack was the work of irresponsible people and was a matter of personal spite, as the same Negroes have been in attendance here at other encampments and no disturbance was made. The white people at the garrill, Go show it on morn and contemptable print on April 9th by whipping Negro members of the G. A. R. and then driving them out of the city. The mob then went to the home of the past commander of the department and man handled him. The contagion has become so great that they mob members of their own race. Such acts at Litzgerall are a disgrace and the memory of it is an eternal dishonor. K. church from April 24-29 for benefit of Trebelk Duguese Hospital, Kansas City, Kan. The booths were very pretty arranged and the fair was a desolate success. All n Chapel booth representing Kansas City, Mr. had many pretty things such as hand pointed chin, vases, dresses, hairstyles and anything one could wish for. The Episcopal churches and the Catholic church had a booth just full of dafties. Everything was a delight to the eye. The booth representing Independence had pretty funny work, aprons and beautiful old sofa pillows. It was in deed attractive. The Epistle church booth also had beautiful funny work of all description and a doll that most anyone would have been proud to own. Kansas City, Kan. also had a very attractive bath. Every attitle be one could wish for was for sale, even underwear. The embroidery was beautiful and at in hotel showed the effect of the lily to make it a sensual. Also it held the work of Miss Princess Spencer, who is well known in the cast as an artist on China. Mrs Spencer won the only gold medal given on chan at the Jimmy town expo in 1907, where she demonstrated her work. Also her work has been criticised by the best artists in the United States and has stood the test. With a few more years of study Mrs Spinner will be one of our successful artists.
