You may not give Elder Ransom pearls, silver, or gold, but do give him the sincere gratitude and esteem of the Brotherhood of christian men. That he has done well, and splendid well for the Fifth Episcopal District as well as for Kansas all will agree. Make Ransom unanimously your candidate for financial secretary, and hundreds of votes from every section of the church will join with you in promoting him to the position of trust and usefulness. Elder Ransom is known well, and favorably known throughout the entire connection, and his "Time" is "Ripe" for connectional preference. Yours, FLOYD GRANT SNESSON, Bellaire, Ohio LINCOLN INSTITU1E. In one of the most interesting of the always instructive bulletins scat out by the United States department of agriculture the extension of sorghum growing is urged by Carleton R. Hall, one of Uncle Sam's first agronomists. "It is only thirty five years," he says, "since the first grain sorghums were introduced into the United States. It is only twenty years since any of them have become crops of recognized importance. Although grain producing varieties had probably been introduced from time to time since the early colonial days, none had remained in cultivation "The first permanent introductions were the two durras, brown durra and white durra, which reached California in 1974 under the names 'brown Egyptian corn' and 'white Egyptian corn.' On account of its earliness and drought resistance the white variety became popular in the central plains region during two different series of dry years. The most was from 1890 to 1894, when it was known as the corn." "Meal made from the grain sorghums, ground locally, is not infrequently used in the making of batter cakes and similar articles on the farm. The general testimony is that these are delicious in quality. Some experiments are now being conducted in a small way to determine the value of the meal for more extended use. There seems little reason why when properly milled it should not be used in much the same manner as cornmeal. Throughout Africa, India and the other parts of southern and eastern Asia, where these crops are largely grown, they are not only commonly used as human food, but in many countries they truffle the chief article of the "The advantages of pure crops are imminent and easily seen. Pure varieties are most likely to be uniform in height ```markdown ``` and in time of ripening, and hence are easy to harvest. The grain is of much greater value for seed purposes and also obtains a higher grade and commands a better price on the grain market. It is also better as a feeding grain because more uniform in quality. The formation of various boys' and girls' clubs, especially those for the growing of corn, is helping to create interest in the things of the farm. They are real stops in the right direction and should be extended to cover all farm crops, poultry and live stock. But it is not necessary to await the formation of a neighborhood club in order to interest the lay in selecting better seed. Help him to make selections from the year's crops. Let him prepare it for storing over winter but use a neld on which he can plant it the following spring. Plant alongside it some unselected seed. Assist him in comparing the two fields. Encourage him if stifling results are not obtained the first year. Give him a fair share of the profit when profit results from his labor. The best result will be the increase of interest in knowledge in the lay. No More Thirsty Plowmen. I thought my wife was extravagant when she bought one of those new fringed bottles for keeping liquids hot, but it has proved very convenient in the hot and now that I have found a new use for on the farm I am as eager to use it as she is. Before going out into the hot sun to work I will drink a bottle with the cold filtered water and do it in the reticent order so that the whole thing becomes thoroughly chilled. I then carry it out to work with me, put it in the shade or preferably under a bit of soil. The water keeps almost free cold all day long, even in the hottest weather. Twenty-one of the many reasons why you should investin a safe, sound and conservative Insurance propositi STANDARD LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, — Home Office, Racker Building, Atlanta, Georgia A SAFE PROPOSITION.—The Life Insurance Business, conducted on the Legal-Reserve plan, as prescribed by the Insurance Laws of the State of Georgia, and other States, is almost an exact science. There is nothing in- determinate or haphazard about the business, so conducted, the eclecents of chance and risk are entirely eliminated UNDER THIS PLAN THE STAN. DARD LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL CONDUCT ITS BUSINESS Experience and actual computation have produced what is known as THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE MORTALITY TABLE. Under the Georgia Law all Compinies Incorporated under the legal reserve plan are required to set wide, as t LUGAL RESERVE fund, at interest, under the supervision of the Insurance L pirtment of the State, such a percentage of each prem. tum _as the table sl} ows is required, together with future premiums to meet death losses as they occur, Therefore a new Company opcrated on this plan 45 scientifically and conclusively just as safe and sccure as the largest Com. pany im the world No other business has such inherent elements of strength and unusual sife-cuards thrown around it by law as the business of life im- surance, The colored man has long felt the need of Old Line Legal-Reserve In. surance, His attempts to fill the need have thus far been confined to assess- ment associations «nd fraternal orders. Experience has clearly proved that these organizations can not, from an insurance standpoint, be placed on a salisfictery and permanent basis. The colored man not only needs hfe insur. ANCE COMPANY is the outcome of conditions and the response to the needs which call for an Old Line, Legal-Reserve Life Insurance Company, with the proud distinction of being the first and only Company organized by colored men in accordance with this safe, scientific, and approved method, It is very gratifying and augurs well for the success of the Company to say that before Charter had been granted, applications for stock had been re- ceived aggregating nearly $30,000, or practically one-third of the entire cap- italization. Some of the best known pfessional and business men in Georgia and other States all over the South have purchased stock, They realize that a good substantial life insurance company is the kind of investment that makes money. The indications now are that the entire 1,000 shares of stock will be greatly over-subscribed and that the stock will be withdrawn from the mar- ket inside of 30 days, It is the plan of the COMPANY to scatter the stock with influential people in hmited quantities throughout the entire United States, especially in the States where we plan to begin business, thereby se- curmg a local identification, prestigeand influence in each State that we could not otherwise get. The favorable influence of so large a number of persons over such a wie territory practically insures, in wur judgment, large dividends on the stock, (02) BLO ADS: The standud bie Dsauraace Compiny whl webs Industilat, later mediate as well as the Ontnary lnsarance buyiness, (1.3) BLGAE SE: The investment will be sate and seund beyond all doubt whatever.
