RUBBER CANNON BALLS.
A World's Fair Exhibit That Puzzled Louis Napoleon.
An instance of the obsession of the mind by one idea is seen in a high-cross mistake made by Louis Napoleon in 1826 at a world's fair held to Paris while he was emperor. He had been trained to war, and he could not see a strange object without regard it is relation to war. The jealous of the United States commission at the exhibition was Mannsell It Field who tells in his "Memoirs of Many Men" how greatly disturbed the caper was by an American invader the commissioner was present at a re-ception both the palace.
The superior approached me and
wrote that he had that afternoon
wrote, through our department of
the expedition this was just before it
we opened to the public—that he had
seen many things there which inter-
ested him, for that nothing had so
much pleased him as the exhibition
of valuable art rubbish. Among the
staff he had noticed something,
wrote that puzzled him ever since.
If very much respected that I was
not present at the time of his visit.
Here I interrupted him to say that
I very much respected it myself and
that if he had sent me an invitation
of his purpose I should have been
sure to attend.
"Well, he answered, 'In one corner I saw, stacked at one corner in an artillery tank, a pile of volcanic ash in the rubber cannon ball.' There was no hole there to an war the inquiries which I desired to in the. Perhaps you explain the matter to me."
I did not see the ball in or out and I had to say so.
I cannot have me' to amused his mind, how any point of in no other can be used for projectiles.
I was not told admirably that it was really to me how the future would have thought seriously of making common balls of it. After so much foresight an late view the emperor or people did not think that it would be cool to have it immediately, so he hasted me to look much interest in military matters. I answered that I did not any more than civilians usually did.
"I was at that time teaching very near the Palace of Industry. The next morning I went over before breakfast for the purpose of getting information upon the subject which had so puzzled the emperor. I went directly to the india rubber exhibit, and, since enough, I found the balls there just as they had been described to me. It was too early for me to expect to see the man in charge, but there was a person in his place. I asked what in the world he expected to do with india rubber cannon balls.
"They are not cannon balls," he answered; "they are footballs."
The Literary Lady
In the course of duty and society obligations a senator one evening was a guest at the house of a man noted for the number of literary people he gathered about him. The senator had been told that the guests would be either authors or people competent to discuss literature from Confucius down to the present day.
Finding himself beside a middle aged but handsome woman, the senator observed that he supposed she was a literary person. She pleaded guilty and added;
"I think the world of frides, and I like Haythorne's 'Red Letter,' and I'm simply mad about Dickenson's works."

One of Nature's Mysteries
One of Nature's mysteries.
The zodiacal light, still one of the unsolved mysteries, has shown very regular positions in intensity and form. In a communication to the French Academies of Sciences M. Blireland has pointed out that those variations arise solely with the periods of regular magnetic waves of polar regions, and this would seem to indicate that the zodiacal light is an electric phenomenon. A number of experiments suggest that it may be part of a ring of luminous matter surrounding the sun in the plane of its magnetic equator.
Universal and Eternal
"Yes, life is universal and eternal, for time is one of its factors, winter day the moon, today the earth tomorrow, Jupiter. In space there are rocks and tumbles. The red carbon stars will soon be dead; the hydrogen stars like Vega and Sirius, are the stars of the future; Procyon Copula and Vurtus are the stars of the present. The more common of the various phobias as classified by Bendel are follows: Chaetophobia, fear of narrow or closed places, agoraphobia, fear of open places; anoraphobia, fear of lightning, monophobia, fear of being alone; pathophobia, fear of disease; myosophobia, fear of contamination, adictomatophobia, fear of railroad travel; noreophobia, fear of being at a height of looking over precipices, thaumatophobia, fear of death.
It is to be emphasized that the title bias in question are not normal fears, based, as normal or natural fears are, on some reasonable justifying experience. A reasonable and justifiable normal fear of lightning might arise after the experience of having been at some time in a house struck by lightning.
Other fears, such as the fear of falling in a buggy after having been in a runaway or the fear of a voyage at sea or railway after a frightful shipwreck or railway accident, is a more or less mutual or reasonable fear as the fear of windows and ghosts is among the superstitious of those accustomed to ghost stories and tradition of golden visitation, etc.
These fears do not require a wrapped brain for their lodgment, though the weakened brain may be more visibly impaired by them to be regulated as symptom of disease these fears must be groundless so far as initial causes extend to the brain are concerned. They must present from a morbid state of the brain and not from property setting external causes. They must be fears pertinent to the individual under to their circumstances of cerebral disturbance and not fear common to others and due to causes that may its cause alarm and frighten.
Monkeys and Gum.
In tropical countries the cavalry have many unique ways of catching man boys. One of them, as explained by a traveler, is to: 'The hunters walk alone in short bed in sight of the monkeys. Then they take the boots off, place some knot in the bottoms and leave them in the ground, which draw themselves to a great distance. Presently, the mobs come down from the trees and try on the boots, and when the hunters come after them they stick to the foot of the monkeys and they are unable to climb. Thus the itch, a little animal is not gripped.'

Beatrice Layng's Fate at the Hands of the Mob in 1705.
That belief in witchcraft and brutal treatment of alleged witches once loomed large in Scotland is shown in Stewart Bruce, the Pigment of the Land. In 1705 Pittenwenn gained unavailble access from a series of possessors of old women, and the complicitors of the day were kept busy on both sides in defending and nouncing the action of the magistrates. The author says:
Christmas Number
"It seems that a blacksmith, one Patrick Morton, being taken ill, decided that he was bowled out, and on his instigation a number of old women were thrown into prison. Brutal by the magistrates and the sets of the town to day and with guards by night, who sleep, but kept in the ring them with pans the old women were soon able to lose anything.
One woman in particular, Bettie Caying, had been dragged out by Morton for his poor venomous. He said that she was asking him to make some mats for her. He believed they were for some evil purpose referred to do and she went off mistering him aloud. When he fell ill she was heard to say, "He might blame his one tongue for his ill" on this issue of this rites she was in prison, and practically under torture she is knowledge of the mindsters and mistresses that she had to be a wiser of Morton and such things in it.
After a long period of inebid but lying she was set free or in other words, handed over to the mob to work their will on it. Hanged on a rope between a ship and the shore a was posted with sticks till half dead and then to death on duty a dead it in those days as one woke to rest the wrist a rest a might be inish against

SASH WINDOWS.
Probably a Dutch Invention of the Seventeenth Century.
The history of sash windows is somewhat obscure, but the probability is that they were a Dutch invention and that they were introduced into England soon after the revolution of 1755. The derivation of the word "sash" in this sense is the Dutch "sas," a slur-old English "sasse." In Queen Anne's reign they were yet so comparatively uncommon as to be mentioned as a special feature of houses that were advertised as "to be" In the Tatler, for instance, No. 175, May 27, 30, 1710, there is this advertisement:
"To be left, in Devonshire Square, near Bishopsgate, a very good Brick House of 3 Rooms of a Floor, and a good Hall, with very good light and dark Closets, the whole House being well wainscoated and sashd with 30 Sash Lights, a very pleasant and convenient Office below Stalls."
From England they passed into France, where the first to put them up was Marshal de Lange at his new house at Montmartre. Speaking of this, Lister in 1839 writes in his "Journey to Paris." "We had the good fortune here to find the marshal himself. He showed us his great sash windows, how easily they might be lifted up and down and stood at any height, which contrivance, he said, he and out of England by a small model brought on purpose from thence, there being nothing of this pulse in windows in France before" - London Standard.

Origin of a Postal Custom.
The steamship Oregon was lost off The island on March 14, 1858. She was summoned by a coastwise schooner, remaining about for half an hour, a time which made it possible to save every person about. When her mull was fished up and delivered the pieces were stamped with a statement that they had been in the wreck, the first instance of a practice which is now employed by direction of the international postal union. The credit for this simple device is believed to be due to Edward M. Morgan, at that time in a subordinate position in the New York postoffice, who foresee that a few minutes' work with a rubber stamp would forestall an infinitude of complaint.—New York Sun.

Dear Sir, Sir, that it has been over looked by our writer in this city, I will ask your intelligence that I may in the known along the time of the broad circulation of your valuable paper to the many friends of Mr. Jay Wright Pope, of his walerous death, which occurred on May 13 at his home in this city, 1411th Avenue west
Mr Pope was taken very suddenly was such only a few days. He suffered at intimately, complaining of his head. No one was able to diagnose the case, neither did they try until he made that then they held a postmorture examiner that which I am told resulted in the filing of the skull fractured and small pieces of the bone pressing upon the brain. It is supposed that this fracture resulted from a blow of some kind but it will take God or a very rigid in vestigation to find out the source from which he received a blow (if a blow it was). Mr Pope was an active member of the A M R church and lover of the choir. Hospest and industrious at most to a fault. He leaves to mourn his loss two small children, a boy little 17, and girl 11. A VIEW OF OKLAHOMA.
In our travels through Oklahoma, we met Mr. J. C. Colbert, of Lenepah, Oklahoma, who is one of the most successful and enterprising negroes of Oklahoma. He is the owner of six hundred and forty acres of land, seven miles southwest of Lenapah, Oklahoma, near the Delaware oil extension. This land has one hundred producing oil wells on it that based for twenty-four thousand dollars; besides this oil land Mr. Colbert has one of the finest agricultural farms in the state of Oklahoma. This farm is located near Knoxville, Oklahoma, on the M. K. & T. R. R., and has the best of improvements and fifty-five acres of the best farming land that could be bought. Mr. Colbert is the father of ten children, who, together with their father, are managing this farm at Knoxville, Oklahoma. Mr. Colbert is also a breeder of fine stock. He has raised some of the finest teams in this community and still breeds fine horses and cattle together with some fine hogs. Although the owner of some of the finest stock in the state, Mr. Colbert is the only negro in west of Oklahoma who owns an automobile. He has an Oakland car of forty horse power that he bought in Kansas City and drove overland to his farm in Oklahoma. He paid $1,500 for the car and has a garage at his home to keep it in. As stated above, Mr. Colbert has a very fine home and Mrs. Colbert is an accomplished woman, with very good looking children who are a pleasure to meet Mr. Colbert is widely acquainted in Topeka and has a host of friends there who will be glad to know of his success. He is a credit to the negro race and what we want is more negroes with the thrift and energy. Mr. Colbert

IN THE WORLD OF SPORT
Mercer. Pennsylvania's Great Fulibac'.

Although the Pennsylvanian drove in a poor showing on the gridiron this season that is one holes below him nor whose playing stands out above all others. He is aupton Mercer. It is doubtful if there is a faster back held man in football today than the Quakers' fullback. He starts quickly and gets up his speed wonderfully. He increased his value to the team nearly 50 per cent by mastering the straight arm in waddling off tacklers. Mercer does this better than any man Pennsylvanian ever had except Bill Holba back of the PWS clown
Penn to Have Strong Basketball Team The prospects of a successful basketball team this year at Pennsylvania are unusually bright. All but one of last year's two have returned former Captain Marks being the only loss Captain Walton, Turner, Place, Jourdet, Keough and Kennedy assure a strong team, and the good material from last year's freshman team seems to promise a capable set of second string men.
The comparative chances for a championship are felt at Penn to be encouraging. All the other colleges have lost men and some will have to build up new teams, while Pennsylvania's six cran team, the only live to score a victory over Columbia in New York last year, remains almost intact and will be backed up by a likely squad of subtitle titles. Some of these are Graham, who played on the strong, Havenford Grammar school five, Baldill and Pawson who were on Delmont's team last year, and Bible who played two years on the Huston school team. The first game will be played on Dec. 9
Olympic Team May Loss Stars
According to the Olympic rules only athletes who are named are eligible to represent the country they wish to compete for in the Olympic games. Through this rule there are three athletes who are unable to sport their country so secured by the 1912 classes because they do not American citizens. They are from Alamo, Tim Alburn and Con Wash.
The Abercrombie brothers wrote the colors of John Bald and Walsh struggled in behalf of a team at the last Olympiad games which were held in London in 1952. Then Abercrombie is the American team quarterback, stop and jump champion and second holder. Then Abercrombie is the senior champion running broad and hop step and jump champion of the Metropolitan Association then Walsh is a renowned Lunar champion.
Ketchela Kin In Bina
I am knotted brother of the late Stanley knotted is the latest aspirant for honours in the boxing world. He weighs 140 pounds and is said to have an excellent mind in the lightwol division. Also he began training he has two two fights at an amateur and to professional bodies, losing only one of the twentys two, and that on a four he is said to have the old time shift that made his inordinate brother for great and can hat kind.
Japan to Send Team to Olympics. Japan is to be represented by a track and field team at the Olympic games next year, and a move is now under way to find out the best men for each event. What surprised the Japanese was the encouragement recentl that China would send a team, and the former nation is not going to be outdone in the matter of progress by any of its oriental neighbors when it comes to something modern.
