Martin, Humphrey and Bruce, we
rode out to the school in the former's
car, and met Supt, Blakey. After be-
ing introduced to him by Mr, Martin,
he cailed our attention to the ed
that we had xpoken of him and the
institution some time ago, which he
thought was not very flattering. Afte
er conversing with him for some time,
we came tuo the conclusion that he
was above the average Southern
pwhite man and that he did beheve the’
tolored people ought to have some
rights, and that w separate Institution
for «plored boys should be built in
the state of Missouri, and controlled
exclusively by culoted people, rnd that
he had yone to the last Lexislature
and ashed for an appropriativn to
build another Institution, but the
state could not afford the money at
this tlme, but was looking forward to
the time when it could be done, and
he will do everything in his power to
have it pacs.
We gave him to understand that
the urticle published some lime axe
by us, concerning the filthy conditions
vt the colored bovs' dormitory, was
not intended to reflect on his manage.
ment, as much ay ot was to call the
attention of the pubhe officials of
Missouri and the people as to the
meds as well as the premitice tos
wards colored people, and that if any
was to sulfer, on account of lack of
funds, tt woukl be the colored, and
not the white,
He admitted that the place was
filthy, but that at could rot be helped
at that time because there was not
cnough funds oon hand or a suta-
ble buikhmg to sive dexired reguits.
Ne san that the [ist Leygrslature
had made a vary fair xppropriation,
ad showed us gn ether buikling
Which os naw beng uscd by the tates,
wad which will now be turned ever to
the eclored boys, v here the young: will
be separated froma the of b ‘this build.
ng is very neat, and will make ¢om-
fortably quatters for them, We asked
hira why they did not have a cclores
wotructor and 2 coluted matron. He
saul he had been trying to get
Seung colared man for metructor, une
fad the promic< of (vo, but ‘both
had failed He suid the postion wis
now open for some young. colored
man at seventy-five dollars per month, |
with board und taundry,
As there was no appropriation for.
matton, therefore they could not have
one, We called his attention to a
building being creeted on the grounds,
ef which the inmates ure dome the
work under un mstructer, The cols
ered boys were mixing mortar while!
the white boss were laying the bricks,
We noted that im ali trade depart
ments there were no colored boss,
His attention was callud to this and
he admitted that he could not ene
the colored boys a square deal for the
fact that the ofhcers under him would
not stand for itz it would create such
# dissension among the white mmates
tad officers, that they coul not have
Hiscipline. ‘Lhut i one of the reasons
Je warted the state to make an ap.
propristion for a separate Institution;
that he knew the colored havs were
not settme a fair deal and that at
coun not be helped, |
Prom whit we saw and heard, we
wre ready to come to the con luson|
that Mr. Blakey wante to do the raght
ining, and is dome the hest he can

Last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Branche, accompanied by Mrs. I. F. Bradley and Mrs. S. C. Rogers, motored up from Kansas City, Kans. and were the house guests of Attorney and Mrs. J. M. Guy until Tuesday morning when they returned home, having had a delightful trip, everything contributing to its success from ideal weather to the hospitality of the Topeka friends. Sunday night about thirty of the friends were gathered together to meet the motorists, and an improvised musical and informal conversation made the evening pass most delightfully. Monday a bounteous noon luncheon given by Miss Katherine Barker and mother, started the day, after which the party visited Topeka, Kans. Industrial School, where they received much countenous attention from Prof. Bridgeforth. From there they proceeded to call on as many of the Topeka residents as they could of the pleasant group they had met, and were much pleased with the beautiful homes they visited until nightfall. Tuesday morning, they started for home stopping over in Lawrence to visit Kansas University, Huskell Institute, and a few friends, arriving in Kansas City before dark, full of appreciation for the kindness shown them and hoping to return the same kindness some time soon.
