Benjamin Jones, a World War veteran, residing with his mother, Mrs. Rachee Jones 2115 Walnut St. (Woodville) was dangerously cut with a knife by Mrs. Alberta Hines of 2608 Newborn St. Saturday evening, July 16, at about 6 o'clock. His upper muscle in one arm is nearly severed and the large vein in his neck was cut in two. A call at St. Philips Hospital brought out the information that his condition is not good.
ONLY CHILDREN THERE.
Going over to A. D. Price's establishment, James Underwood was soon at the wheel and a few moments later I was at a humble residence in Woodville in sight of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, where the late lamented Rev. R. J. Bass labored for so many years. A young woman was dressing two little chil dren. She gave her name as Mrs. Elsie Davis. She stated that most of the people were in the city shopping at the time the affair took place. She was away and only her children were there.
A SISTER'S STATEMENT
Her sister, Alberta Hines, who cut Benjamin Jones, was not there. She did not know anything about it. She afterwards said that she had heard that Jones had threatened to kill her sister and he had showed her the bullets with which he expected to do it. She did not pay any attention to him, thinking that he was running on. She heard that her sister ordered him away and he came over into the yard and she cut him. Another version was that Alberta Hines threw a rock at Benjamin Jones and when he ran towards her afterwards she cur him.
KNEW NOTHING.
Alberta's sister said that Mrs. Willia Bolling knew he said that he was going to get bullets to kill her. A visit to Mrs. Bolling brought out the disclaimer. She did not know anything about it. She saw them in the street and Jones had his hands at his side, but she thought they were playing. Alberta Hines had not been arrested Sunday morning when we called there, but her sister said that she had advised her to give herself up. . .
BEN JONES' MOTHER.
Visiting Benjamin Jones' residence, in a small one story structure, we found a pleasant faced woman of the Old Mammy type. Her name is Mrs. Rachel Jones and she stands well in the community. She is the mother of four children: Mrs. Elizabeth Reid, Mrs. Lena Tompkins, Ernest Jones and Benjamin Jones. She told the following story: "This woman has not been out of the county jail more than three weeks. I advised my son to stay away from her. About two months ago, Alberta Hines came right here (she pointed to the spot) and stabbed Benjamin in the back.
BLOOD FLOWED FREELY
"Blood flowed freely and he had
fo go to the hospital for treat-
it at my boy (over-my head. I
knocked her down and I hurt my
arm in doing so."
Mrs. Lena Tompkins' Ben Jones'
sister, said that he had one of his
muscles nearly severed. He was cut
about the neck and she tried to
cut his throat. He lost much blood
aud was in a bad condition last night. Going to St. Philips Hospital, I saw two patients swathed in bandages in the lobby.
SURGEONS ACTED.
The lady in charge politely stated that the surgeon in charge had not come on yet; An operation was performed last night. The nurse who had been on duty that night in charge of Jones was asleep. Hastening out to the car, I was soon again at The Planet office preparing another report on this near tragedy.
ARREST ALBERTAHINES
SEE ADMITS CUTTING JONES.
Alberta Hines, who cut her seriously wounded Benjamin Jones has been captured by the police. She escaped at the time of the attack and finally Officer Fred L. Bates located her. She admitted her guilt. The case is that of a married woman for a single man and vce vce vce. Her married name is Smith and her husband is in West Virginia. She was bailed in the sum of $2,000. The injured man is in a serious condition.

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, SATURDAY, JULY 23 1997
Library Case May Revert to St. Andrew's
(Richmond News-Leader, July 19)
The Grace Arents' branch library may be lost to the city of Richmond should it be necessary to close the institution through failure of council to provide temporarily for the salaries of its employees, it developed today.
Closing of the library, it is believed would be a violation of the terms under which it was given the city and cause the property to revert to the St. Andrew's Association.
Four members of council blocked the library appropriation on July 5 because the library board retained on the payroll Henry Thompson, Negro fanitor of long service.
The deed given the city by the St. Andrews' Association, which held the title for Miss Arents, provides that the property shall revert to its previous ownership if it is not used for library purposes. A shut-down may be construed as violation of terms of the deed and of the city ordinance of acceptance which is incorporated in the deed.
MAY PASS FROM CITY.
If the library property passes out of the city's hands, the $100,000 maintenance fund handed the city by the executors of the Arents' estate also will pass out of the city's hands, it was indicated.
The. St. Andrew's Association, which has operated the library for more than a decade, has funds with which to reopen the library under the old terms and independent of the city, it is said.
Fourteen votes were necessary to pass the appropriation at the meeting of common council July 5. Because four members—Atkinson, Miller, Robertson and Tyler—voted against it, the measure could summon only thirteen votes, and so was lost. It now is on the table because one member who had voted for the measure changed his vote so he could move reconsideration.
SALARIES HELD UP
Failure of the appropriation—which would finance the library-pending receipt of interest from the trust fund—served to hold up the salaries of the five members of the library staff. They were not paid on July 15 for the first half of July and there is said to be no assurance that they will be paid on the next payday—August 1. In such a case it would close down.
The four members voted against the appropriation because a white man wanted the $15-per-week job held by Thompson, the Negro janitor. Thompson was an employee of Miss Arents for about twelve years and has given faithful service as janitor for many years.
A storm of protest followed the failure of the appropriation, and among the people who have deprived the situation have been O. H. Funk and the Arents, the janitors with the First and Merchants' National Bank, and John Stewart Bryan, chairman of the public library board.
The Arents' library serves a very wide area and the property is valued at $100,000. The trust fund is $100,000 in cash. Thus if the city loses the bequest through violation of its terms a substantial portion of its library property will be sacrificed
Lyncher Is Freed
WYTHEVILLE, VA., July 20.—Floyd Willard (white) charged with murder on account of being an alleged member of the mob that lynched Raymond Bird. He colored man on the night of August 14, 1926 having taken him from the county jail, unsealed an alibi. He was somewhere else when the crime was committed. Wayne Dean, Havoc Charles Guggins and W. P. Cooley, residents of Brayson county testified that they had been out fox hunting and that Willard described how the colored man was lynched.
TWO SISTERS.
Willard declared that he was at home on the night of the lynchings and he produced witnesses to prove it. This is one of the most remarkable cases ever tried in this section. Raymond Bird was said to have been intimate with two of the sisters in a white family and that the females refused to prosecute him. They were in a condition that required for one of them hospital attention. Finding that he could not be legally convicted upon a charge of rape, a mob decided to lynch him and to override the law of the State.
MOR LEADERS NOT ARRESTED.
The feeling here among both classes is that the real leaders of the mob have never been apprehended. One man out of the crowd was selected to make a test case and then have the whole matter ended once for all. The action of the State officials is being highly commended here and it is recognized that the officials were in earnest in an effort to punish those who overrode the law. Colored people here are not doing any talking, although it may be that the white family will leave the neighborhood'

SHEPHERDS' BIG EXCURSION A
SUCCESS—ANOTHER BIG ONE
WILL GO ON SEPTEMBER 14
The Shepherds Excursion to Bay Shore on the 19th was a signal success in every way. Notwithstanding the gloomy weather which unmered in the day, a capacity crowd wents with us. The railroad authorities as well as the street car company left no stone unturned to make the day enjoyable by all. The Folds promoting the Excursion made a splendid record in the report for the sale of tickets. Rev. William Thomas Memorial Fold led with more than $200 to their credit for the sale of tickets. We extend our hearty thanks to all of the members of the organization and our friends for making such an outing possible. Pride of Croaker Fold located at Norge, Va. made a splendid showing in this Excursion. They carried a car-load of people from Norge.
On September 14th the Shepherds will carry another big excursion to Bay Shore. Plans are now being worked out which will guarantee a big day for the Shepherds and their friends.
Tuesday, July 12th the Grand Presiding Shepherd in company with Grand Secretary Treasurer A. C. Clark, Mr. Roscoe C. Mitchell, Mrs. D. Webster Davis and Mr. Frank McWilliams motored to Newport News, for the purpose of holding a meeting with the local committee of Newport, News, looking forward to the perfection of arrangements for the Grand Fold meeting in September. A joint meeting of the Grand Officers and the local committee was held at the home of Mrs. Lizzie McPherson.
This meeting was largely attended by members of the local committee. We found on this committee the following persons who were greatly aiding Mrs. Lizzie McPherson in putting over the program: Dr. S. A. Thomas, Prof. J. S. Lee, Mr. Roger Kyles, and others. Ways and means were discussed by the Grand Shepherd and her committee and the members of the Newport News committee.
The Newport News Committee evidenced considerable interest in their efforts to make this the largest and most successful convention ever held by our Order. Besides the usual details considered in connection with making arrangements for our annual convention a big street parade was authorized, which will take place on the second day of the convention. The committee entered heartily into the promotion of this parade and promises that this will be one of the outstanding events in connection with our convention.
A. Card of Thanks.
Mrs. Harriet Blunt wishes to thank the Pastor, members and friends and especially Mrs. Ella Browne, of the Sharon Baptist Church for the agreeable surprise led on her Wednesday night, July 13, 1927. They presented her a handsome purse. May showers of blessings continue to fall upon each and every one who contributed so generously to this beautiful testimonial of friendship.
Dr. and Mrs. G. A. Galvin have returned from their bridal trip, which included Washington, New York, seaside resorts and Newport News, Va., the home of the groom's parents.

Canada Is Now Celebrating Her Diamond Jubilee
GEORGE STEPHEN, LORD MOUNT STEPHEN
DONALD SMITH, LORD STRATHCONA, DRIVING LAST SPIKE, C.P.R.
SIR JOHN MACDONALD
On July 1. Dominion Day. Canada began the celebration of her sixtieth birthday as a united Dominion. This Diamond Jubilee of Confederation has unique significance in modern history as being in effect a tribute to the importance of the Confederation. The United States really acknowledges today that railways greatly help in uniting a scattered and far-flung population. But Canada's case is unique because its first transcontinental railway alone made complete confederation a reality instead of a mere desirable policy. Canada's confederation began with passage of the British North America Act on July 1, 1867, the members at that time comprising Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In 1869 an Imperial Order in Council gave

Rupert's Land and the North-West Territories to the fledging Dominion. Manitoba entered Confederation in 1870, followed by British Columbia in 1871. The latter, however, had written into the Terms of Union a clause binding Canada to build within ten years a railway "to connect the seaboard of British Columbia with the railway system of Canada." The Canadian government first attained this status in 1881 through the Premier Sir John Macdonald approached George Stephen (afterwards Lord Mount Stephen), a Montreal banker, who in October of 1880 organized the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and agreed to complete the railway by May 1, 1891.
Despite colossal obstacles, the Canadian Pacific completed the railway to Montreal.

The industry does not record a like decision. Yet one glance—one ride in the New Essex Super-Six reveals the startling reasons that prompted it. If thousands praised the former Essex, then tens of thousands must applaud the new. If all sales records were surpassed by the former Essex, then even higher marks must reward the new.
No previous car—no previous value—gives anything by which to judge it. It is the greatest achievement in Essex history.

LORD STRATHCOHA
the allowed ten years, British Columbia was indissolubly linked to her sister provinces, and the most critical period of Canadian history had a happy ending. On Nov. 7, 1885, Donald A. Smith (afterwards Lord Strathcona), drove the last spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway, uniting the rails stretching westward from the Atlantic Ocean and those eastward from the Pacific at Cragnelachle, British Columbia, and making Canada's Confederation an accomplished fact.
We are now showing this Greater EssexSuper-Six. We could say it is longer, roomier, more luxurious, with greater power and performance—yet that does not express it.
We do say: "See it and ride in it with greater expectation of fine things than you ever held for any but the costliest cars". You will not be disappointed.

Nearly $20,000,000 was spent last year on organized recreation for children in the United States, but more than 20,000 under the age of 15 years were killed in preventable accidents. nevertheless. Most of them died from injuries received while playing in streets and highways.
"If the papers tomorrow should announce that the whole population of Corning, N. Y., or Alliance, O. Galesburg, III., Fargo, N. D., Sedalia, Md., Ardmore, Okla., Key West, Fla., or Riverside, Cal., had been wiped out the world would be aghast at the news of the tragedy," said M. Weaker, general manager of the Cyclone Fence Company, of Waukee. The Cyclone Fence tragedy passes unimpeded every year because we do not think of this "slaughter of the encounter in its intensity.
"Girls installing properly protected playgrounds and encouraging their children to use them, soon find the death and injury will reduced. The venerable United States will benefit materially from the steps taken to make highways of our great water courses and to com at the recognition of this year's terrible floods," commented Mayor Thompson. "The conference was not of importance simply to the Mississippi Valley." What perfecting of the great inland water highways would be to citizen of the United States was told Mayor Thompson in the statement by C U Williams of Bloomington, Ill. president of the largest oil-burner company in the United States.
"We recently shipped an Oil-Matic burner from Bloomington to Providence R. I., by rail," he said. "On the same day we started another to Providence from San Francisco by water. It reached its destination three days ahead of the one sent by rail, and the cost was three dollars less. Doing an international business, we are able to ship our burners from New York to foreign branches for less money than it costs us to get them to New York from the factory. Deep water burners, and lower transportation charges, will mean much to consumers everywhere"

The Campaign Manager has decided to make the following offer: For each and every $25.00 worth of new or renewed subscriptions turned in before 8 P. M. August 15, 100,000 Extra Votes will be given.
These Votes are in addition to the regular Votes allowed on subscriptions.
Candidates are not limited to the number of $25.00 Clubs. They secure $25.00 worth of subscriptions, whether new or renewed subscriptions, and they will count on this offer as a club. The regular Votes will be issued as the subscriptions are turned in. And by turning them in you receive them. The subscribers will receive their paper promptly. The 100,000 Extra Votes Offer is positively the Big Great Special Offer of the Campaign. It will not be repeated. Subscriptions will be worth more up to and including August 15, than they will be later.
HOW THE PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED.
The two Grand Prizes will be awarded to the two candi dates, regardless of where they live, who obtain the two highest number of Votes during the Campaign. The candidate having the highest gets the first prize, and the second highest gets the second prize.
To all candidates not winning one of the regular prizes, 10 per cent. Cash Commission will be paid on all money paid in, providing they remain active. An active candidate is one who turns in at least one subscription each week while he or she is in the campaign.
Every one is eligible and is invited to enter, no matter where you get your subscriptions, whether in your home town or elsewhere. They count for you. You can also have friends, as many as you want, help you obtain subscriptions and they will be placed to your credit.
All automobile prices are quoted F. O. B. war tax prepaid and subject to change in prices.

FLOGGED AND MADE TO SELL HIS PROPERTY
BIRMINGHAM, ALA., July 14—All members of the band of masked men which flogged Arthur Hitt, colored farmer, will be under arrest within a few days county authorities said today, following an investigation into the affair which culminated in Hitt's transverting for a nominal sum a small tract of land which he did not wish to sell. Authorities believe Hitt, who was characterized as a "respectable land owner," was coerced into selling by threats of violence.

It is a safe plan.—when you do
not know what to do, do nothing.
Some people delight in displeasing other people.
Doing right always pays in the long run.
You cannot accomplish much by running away from trouble. The proper way is to face it.
When you learn to have faith and to pray, you will have made great progress in your religion. ;
The essence of law is to mete
equal and exact justice.
We shall win our reward if we keep to the straight and narrow path and faint not.
Delays are sometimes dangerous and on the other hand speedy action sometimes ends in disaster.
Our friends are helping us and we are helping our friends.
It is a long lane that has no turn. President King of Liberia now seems to be safely in the saddle in that country.
It is a view of an embarrassing situation from a new angle. Some of these white folks are certainly hard-up and they would bring others down to their level. Missionaries are needed in some of these neighborhoods.
President Calvin Coolidge is satisfying his friends and puzzling his enemies. He is not talking about the presidential nomination but his action seems to indicate that he is very much interested and that it will take "mighty little persuasion to get him to become a candidate again.
Disciple Chairman of the Fourth District Race Forward Movement has launched a campaign for the raising of money to enable the organization to arouse the colored people of that section of Virginia to the necessity of laying and perfecting plans for the protection of the colored people and to stimulate our young folks in the ways of industrial activity.
The fact that the white people of the city may lose the Grace Arents Library property and the $100,000 for upkeep on account of the action of four Negrohaters in the City Council, who would rather throw out of employment four white lady employees in order to oust one $15 Per week colored janitor is arousing interest and indignation throughout this city.

Richmond, Va., July 6, 1970.
A perfect cure has been effected by L. J. Hayden's Pure Herb Medicines. After waitin' thirteen years and have not suffered from the horrible disease, Gravel, I desire to make a statement to L. J. Hayden.
Thirteen years ago twelve leading physicians of my city treated me for Kidney trouble and gravel without the desired benefit. These doctors advised me to be operated on, as that was the only chance for me. I was advised to so and get some of L. J. Hayden's Herb Medicine and try before being operated on. I did so, in twenty-four hours after using his medicines. I passed at least a half dozen gravel, some as big as a large pea. Since that time I have not suffered with the gravel. I highly recommend L. J. Hayden's medicine to all suffering humanity. I am

justice Taft says he likes the law better than the White House and, nearing his seventieth year, announces he will not retire. He certainly should not retire, for he owes to the public many future years of good effort. His mind and his smile are as young as ever, and every well informed man in the United States, big or little, would gladly submit any issue to the judgment of Chief Justice Taft.
In six hours New York's National Guard laid out an airplane base, ready for use, with radio, telephone and all other requirements. A fine achievement.
The United States Government should take as much time as necessary to provide an airplane base for every great city.
Governors Island in New York Harbor should be given up entirely to flying, with a big dock for submarines.
The richest city, New York, containing the United States Sub-Treasury and all its gold, is unprotected from the air.
There ought to be an air field there from which swift United States pursuit planes would rise like mosquitoes from a stagnant pond, to meet any invader.

In England the eclipse put out the sun, changing day to night, and everybody knew that it was only make believe night. Nobody feared that "the devil was eating the sun." Nevertheless, when the eclipse passed and the sun came shining out once more, the crowds cheered. They were glad to have mother nature stop playing bear.
When Uncle Sam's fiscal year ended last week, he found a surplus of $635,000,000. Secretary Melon had "guessed" $625,000,000, a good萌萌.
Uncle Sam really is a rich person and can afford anything he needs. He ought to dig canals, harness water power, build the greatest air and submarine fleets in the world. He should stop trying to persuade Europe to do what it doesn't want to do, attend to his own business and be in a position to make other nations mind theirs. Until this nation is prepared to defend itself against any ten other nations the Government will not have done its duty.
"Well done, but what did you do the next day?"

Now Fokker announces a plane to donation for seventy two hours to the army to福州. 5,000 miles. This Government should contract with Fokker to keep him here for life building airplanes. Ancient Monarchs and Poes offered any investment that would bring great artists to their courts. The great artist of today is the airplane artist.

Convicts begged permission to save the boys, but the guards, riffles leveled, forbade them to follow their impulse, jump into the river and pull the drowning boys ashore. The three boys drowned while guards and convicts looked on, some of the latter weeping.
Once more those convicts feel that they never had a chance, not even a chance to help others, at risk to themselves.
They had a bad start in life, most of them, and things have gone wrong with them ever since. When they missed the opportunity to save life they again felt cheated. If the prisoners had no chance in the beginning is not the fault of society, whose fault is it?

LANDING A NIPIGON TROUT
Sharkey — Dempsey
The hold former champion Jack Dempsey has on ring fans was reflected in the big advance sale of tickets to the Dempsey-Sharkey battle in New York, July 21—as Jack the Giant Killer started the "comeback" trail for another battle to sign him little which he lost to Gene Turner last fall.

Three turrets and six mounted Lewis machine guns are on the fewest type bombing biplane which Uncle Sam tested most thoroughly at Mitchell Field last week. The plane is of all metal construction.
Nipigon, an adaptation of the Indian words meaning "water that goes far away," gives a very realistic word picture of this beautiful river and lake country in Ontario, situated north of Lake Superior. Since 1650 it has been known to white men, for Pierre Gaultier de la Verendry and other famous coureurs des bois and explorers visited and made friends with its dusky inhabitants the Ojibways—people of Hawtha. The Nipigon Bungalow Camp is situated on the Nipigon River overlooking lake Belen and it offers the comforts of urban convenience yet takes nothing from the simplicity and charm of a bounty in the woods.

Best of all the jobs that the Nipigon offers is a trip into the bush with a couple of the unusually competent guides that Jack McKnight, that prince of head guides always seems able to produce.
