All of the prison guards were secured and all of the prisoners could have escaped, among them the five men connected with the troubles at Elaine, and who are sequestrated to death but same is being held up by legal proceedings. These men could have easily escaped. They showed fined judgment by remaining as model prisoners, thus proving to the world that they are innocent of the crime charged to them and that they are being virtually persecuted for an offense of which they are not guilty. The hope is expressed that these men will be finally liberated. DECEMBER TWENTIETH DECEMBER TWENTIETH Next Tuesday will be the last day for the paying of state and county tax, which includes poll tax which entitles the payer to remain on the registration list. Earnest efforts have been made by several organizations to induce the men and women to pay this tax. The League of Women Voters has been especially active along this line. As usual there are many who will wait for the last moment to attend to this duty. These hardy ones are reminded that Tuesday next is the last day to pay the tax without penalty. Next year there will be congressional elections. Followed two months afterwards by the municipal election. It behooves all of our voters to remain on the list with hundreds of others added. EDITORIAL EXCERPTS Seven centuries of fight, and at last the "snakes" are driven from the Emerald Isle. The Spider of Scotland, and Robert the Bruce, tried "seven times" but Ireland tried seven hundred years. They hung on the gallows, they burned in the fires, they plaid and bled and died. They fought old; —against the wedded powers of Mammon and Mars. They were herded like cattle and jalled like felon. They lay naked in the woods and they starred in prison—and the great soul of Mosswine fasted more days than did Jesus Christ. They paid willingly for their freedom and they got it. It is a thing that is worth all its costs. And the "snakes" are driven out—by St. Patrick and Saints like Mr. Swiney and the rest of Sinn Fein. "Our selves Alone," a man who loves his own people, is the only man who can love other people; and the man who loves people, is the only man who can love God. But as a people is its own weakest strength, so is it also its own greatest weakness. The greatest menace to Frei Ireland today is a group of Irishmen factionalists, short-sighted Irishmen. Like other struggling peoples, the Irish nation has its ulcer—spelled Ulster. But this achievement of blood and tears ought to add ten years to the life of every Irishman everywhere in the round world. We write in Chattanooga, Tenn., and we have just witnessed an Irish woman, poor and unknown, but walking with a military erectness, bragging on Irish blood—with her head in the air and her soul in the clouds. "Oh, those American people" she remarked to a group of colored folk. "they're talking about sending missionaries to Ireland. They'd better teach themselves not to make the colored people dig their own graves. She was referring to John Williams, of Jasper county, Georgia, whose people unwittingly dug their own graves, and were then knocked in the head and pushed into it. Colored Americans, the fight has begun in Georgia and Mississippi; in South Africa and Egypt and India. But take note that Ireland fought for seven centuries, for twenty-eight generations of grown men. They were free from the moment when a majority of their males in their pallets to be YOU AND YOUR CHILD 1. Do you comply with the rule of public health in your home and do you keep in mind the fact that while the school may do much to instil right principles, your children are handled if you do not support it, by instilling obedience and high ideals of patriotism and personal life?—Topeka Journal. PEACEFUL RELATIONS The racial relations in this country should be peaceful and harmonious. It should be remembered that what is good for one race along the line of industrial and economic development is good for the other. It should also be remembered that our is a common welfare, because we are citizens of a common country striving, whether unitedly or separately, toward a common destiny. Our motto then should be "Strive to live peacefully with all men." In order to do that, some things must be overlooked. We cannot resent every insult, neither arange every wrong. We must exercise the spirit of tolerance and forebearance in the largest measure possible. This admonition does not contemplate the abolition surrever of our rights as citizens; it suggests, however, order in pursuit of those rights, no matter how keenly we feel the grievances constituted by efforts to take these rights from us. The race that humbly itself shall be exalted in due time. There is no need of despairing or losing hope. A just God ruleth in the affairs of men and nations; that God rewards the man whose ways are pleasing unto Him by making his enemies to be at peace with him—Clary lon. HOLD-UP A young man on his way home from work was stopped by a masked stranger who robbed him of his week's wages and then fled. The community was much aroused for similar crimes were getting entirely too frequent. The wheels of justice were set to operating; the robber was apprehended and duly punished. A young man moved blithely in his circle of friends and acquaintances, far removed from any thought of personal danger. But an envious, spiteful torque, began its scarlet attack, the miserable story growing as such stories always do; and when the last sordid detail of the slander had been offered, a reputation lay in ruins. The effects of that malicious attack continued long afterward to curse an innocent life. A young student, product of much prayer and Christian nurture by earnest, God-fearing parents, left his home and church. In which he had been a very active worker, to enter a great university. Day after day he sat under the teaching of an ultraliberal professor, who, while paid to teach psychology only, lost no opportunity to ridicate a religious faith such as this young man brought with him. There came a gradual ungetting in the student's religions consciousness and then a positive reaction which led him into practical unbelief. The brazen daylight lift hold up! One victim lost a few dollars. One lost his good name. One lost his faith in God. Which of the three victims lost most? The first, robber was brought to justice and given an unusually severe sentence because society had become exasperated by these assaults upon the purse. And every one applauded this meeting of speedy justice. Witnesses of the other crime, against a young man's character, shrugged their shoulders and said it was "none of their business." The third robber continues unmolested to tear young lives from their saving foundations in religion; he is praised for his "brilliance" and the state pays handsomely for his "services." Now as it happened, Ambassador Sannon was a black man; and just few days before the date set for the dinner, a prominent colored educator appeared in Washington with an urgent invitation for Ambassador Shannon to deliver an address at his school in a far Southern state on the very day of the dinner, stating that he had seemed a special car to carry the Ambassador to and bring him from the school. This was done for no other purpose than to get the Ambassador away from Washington on that day. But Ambassador Shannon saw them the scheme and refused point blank to go. It would not surprise The Tribune to learn that some of the same people who tried to toll Ambassador Sannon from Washington so that he would miss President Roosevelt's diplomatic dinner, were instrumental in persuading President King to hastily leave the United States within 48 hours of the unknown hero celebration and save this administration embarrassment.—Washington Tribune. A REASON FOR NEGRO RACE PRIDE Our African ancestry is not to be despised. On the contrary, from interviews with missionaries, with native men and women, through study of recent archaeological discoveries and of scientific treatises, one finds much to awaken and stimulate race pride. I was constrained to get at the truth, as fully as I could lately when meeting groups of colored girls and women, because there was such ready response to the little information I had in regard to the worthwhile characteristics, intellectual, moral, and physical that were the African's own. The accounts of the Yoruba country, the history of the people, their industries, the government and customs are very gratifying. A large number of American Negroes are accredited to the Yoruba country. These people, rous others are accredited with having a very high standard of sex morality—adultery and bastardly being almost unknown before the natives were contaminated by outsiders. We have long known that Africans gathered their girls and boys at the age of adolescence into separate groups in bush schools for secret instructions pertaining to individual and racial health. Professor Agbrey, of Livingstone College, N. C., a native African who was a member of the African Educational Commission under the Phelps-Stokes Fund, gave me when I was at Livingstone College last year some most illuminating information in regard to the mysteries of the bush schools. He took great pride in poling out how in sex education his people had been in advance of some mod- ern nations for a thousand years. I was made to feel that eugenics had originated with them. A scientist lately returned from Africa, stated that if safety of life and of property are a measure of civilization, then Africa and China are head of New York City.—Southern Workman. WAS WASHINGTON WRONG There appears to be a disposition on the part of a few of our race papers to charge the responsibility for the theory that the race problem is to be settled by segregation to the influence of the late Booker T. Washington. Among the papers which take this view of the matter are the Richmond Planet and the St. Paul Appeal. The latter paper goes so far as to say: No single thing in the United States has done so much to prevent the full attainment of citizenship as that speech of Booker Washington delivered in Atlanta, Ga., in 1885. This is going a long way back to place the responsibility for the conditions which now confront the race in this country. But the editor of the Appeal goes on further to say: Since then the descent to hell has been swift and sure and the depths were sounded when the other day, Warring G. Harding, President of the United States, stood by the side of the Grady monument in Atlanta, pronounced a eulogy of Henry W. Grady, the most bitter, dangerous and insulting enemy of the colored people that the country has produced, declared that the race question must be settled by the segregation of American citizens. Lured on by the enthuplastic reception by the South of the R. Washington speech and the white man's "good Negro" part on the shoulder, the Jim Crow leader triste has increased so enormously that it is now a menace to be reckoned with in every community in which there are a hundred colored men. Now, let us see what Dr. Washington usually said at Atlanta, and if it will car the construction that these critics put upon it so many years after is death. We give a few extracts: One third of the population of the South is of the Negro race. No enterprise seeking the matter int. civil or moral welfare of this section can disregard this element of our population and reach the highest success. "To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land, or who underestimate the importance of cultivating friendly relations with their next-door neighbor, I would say: 'Cast down your bucket where you are'—cast it down in making friends in every manly way of the the people of all races by whom you are surrounded. * * * * "In all things that, are purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hands, in all things essential to mutual progress. * * * * "There is no defense or security for any of us except in the highest intelligence and development of all. If anywhere there are efforts tending to curtail the fullest growth of the Negro, let those efforts be turned into stimulating encouragement, and making him the most useful and intelligent citizen. It must be remembered that Doctor Washington's mission is to build up the manhood of the race in the South by providing the opportunity for education and the training of the rising generation in useful trades and occupations, in which they could earn an honest livelihood, and thus be in a position to establish a healthy home and family life. In order to do this he had to disarm the opposition of his Southern whites and secure their acquiescence in his efforts, if not their genuine support. Economic opportunity and eventual equality was the point at which he was aiming, and in order to reach this goal, he was obliged to subordinate all other issues. But it is not to be admitted that he was willing to surrender, or in fact did surrender the other important claims of the race to political equality and the full in dependence, with the best education attainable, was the first step in the slow but steady progress that he had outlined for the race. It is due to the memory of Dr. Washington that his position as a consistent and outspoken opponent of Lynch ed by the prospect of achieving the greatest good for the greatest number, it must be admitted that this purposa was not to drag down but to raise up those crushed in the mire to the fullest attalment of eldizenship. The measure of good that he was able to accomplish under the most discouraging conditions. Is shown in the number of small communities scattered over the South, where the spirit of Tuskegee has manifested. It is in a higher scale of living and thinking. Let these befitted critics of Washington go back and praise Atlanta speech with better understanding, and then look at the monument he has left at Tuskegee and in its graduates all over the South, and they will repent their halfbaked criticism.—New York Age. Quarterback PENITENTIARY CAPTURED BY TOM SLAU Warden and Family Locked In Cell PENITENTIARY CAPTURED BY TOM SLAUGHTER Warden and Family Locked In Death Cell Little Rock, Ark. Dec. 14th. (Associated Negro Press)—Tom Shaughter, the Southwest's most terrifying killer, single-handed, captured the Arkansas state penitentiary here inst Friday night. He imprisoned Warden E. H. Dempsey and his family in the death cell, where he himself had been waiting—a murderer doomed to be electronized next Friday. He usurped the warden's authority and for five hours ruled the prison with an iron hand. Then he offered freedom to all other prisoners. Six took advantage of his offer and the seven made their escape in an auto at 2:30 the next morning. Six Negroes under sentence of death declined their freedom and begged that they be permitted to return to their regs. Slaughter allowed them to do so. The men were known as the Elaine rickers. But six others, four of whom were Negroes doomed to die, cheered the prospect of escape and left with the desperately Slaughter was killed later by the posse organized by the wardens. He was shot behind by one of the Negroes whom he led to liberty. The report of Slaughter's death was confirmed later Saturday night by Sheriff J. J. Crew of Saline county, leader of one of the posses on the killer's trail. One Negro was also killed. NEGRO BAPTIST ACADEMY DESTROYED BY Magnolia, Ark.
