SEATTLE REPUBLICAN THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN PUBLISHES LEGAL NOTICES AT REASONABLE RATES. MAIN 305. VOL. XIV.. NO. 21. SEATTLE REPUBLICAN Published Every Friday at 307 Epler Block. Phone Main 305. H. R. Cayton .....Editor and Publisher susie Revels Cayton .....Associate Entered at the Postoffice at Seattle as Second Class Mail Matte1, That city jail escapade is proving a booma-rang for the Blethonian twins. Fate seems to be very much against the faker. Now you miserable chauffeurs get off the face of the earth lest you depreciate the use of the air for rental purposes. Col. Clayson, of Crimean war fare, must still think he is doing duty on the firing line from his continuous attacks on the rights of women. Imhoff may not be a thief, but he has in his possession some queer belongings for a man without a family. His purchases in the past took queer streaks. We congratulate the Daily Times on its recent "ideal citizen" hero in the person of one Herman F. Titus, who seems to be either a fool or a knave. Birds of a feather flock together. An Oklahoma woman demands for women "justice and not charity." That has a familiar sound as the black man of this country has been calling for the same thing for the past forty years. When it comes to wheat raising "Rube" Washington just takes the cake and with the Wall Street bulls tossing the price skyward the wheat growers of the Evergreen State are the whole show. What was the matter with Revelle in the council meeting last Monday evening? It is expected of Murphy to be an off color, but Tom Revelle "rise rit up in meetin' and 'splain yerself." Cassie Chadwick died in a prison cell, thus taking the secret of the methods of her frenzied financiering to the grave with her. In doing so she doubtless saved others from dying in a felon's ceil. "Crime Increasing in Canada," says a Spokesman-Review head line and from the same source it is learned that Uncle Sam's are also increasing in Canada, which may account for the increase of crime. Agitator Fowler might have remained crazy if he could have gotten his pork chops for breakfast while in the asylum, but on failing to obtain those delicacies he absolutely refused to be crazy another day. Is Fowler a Hamite? Like Andy Johnson President Roosevelt is a great believer in swinging round the circles to air his political views to the people. If Roosevelt does not succeed in convincing the people any more than did Johnson his name is destined to be Dennis instead of Teddy. That the telegraphers' strike has been a rather Small affair is shown in the way the president of the union of telegraphers has dictated things. The drastic steps taken by the other officers of the union in removing him from the presidency will doubtless hold him for a while. Through misrepresentation President Roosevelt has twice gone South to shoot bears and Mr. Bear has not yet been found. Now, Mr. President, you will meet a similar experience when you go South to look for votes, unless they be Negro votes. Paste this in your hat, Teddy. Uncle Sam sent nearly 300,000 sons and daughters to Canada to take up their permanent abode within the past decade. At the same ratio of increase the day is not far distant when the SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1907. Stars and Stripes may be raised over that territory and no one be found to offer the slightest objection. Good thing. Push it along. Judging from the number of millionaires that seem to be in line for a suit of stripes on account of the way they made their money, one would make no mistake in saying to the other millionaires: "Your time is coming." England's assembling of her sea dogs in the North Sea is significant, because of the fact it shows she is twice and three times stronger on the waters than any other European power. And then again, such an array of death dealing dogs of war kinder impresses the stranger that England is not to be fooled with. BENCH AND BAR. In the case of Petridge vs. Kolderup, the Supreme Court recently decided that the marriage of a woman nullifies a will made by her theretofore. The marriage of a man renders his former will invalid, but it was an open question heretofore as to whether a woman's will was revoked by a subsequent marriage. Either or each can make a valid will during marriage. The court gives strong reasons why the same rule should apply to a woman as to a man. Judge Crow wrote the opinion. The State Supreme Court has held that a written consent, given by Puyallup Indians, to an Indian Commissioner to sell their lands, remains good after the decease of one or more of the members of the family executing, such consent—that in this respect it differs from an ordinary power of attorney. So held in the case of Pritchard vs. Jacobs in an opinion written by Judge Hadley. WISE AND OTHERWISE. A young woman was recently traveling alone, being molested by a male passenger, the porter, a colored man, threatened to protect the lone woman by means of blows, if necessary. The porter was reported and discharged. In vindication of himself the boy wrote Mr. Fish, president of the road on which the incident occurred, that the losing of his job was no fault of his, but for the sake of protecting a lady. Mr. Fish wrote explaining the circumstances and to that the Negro reassumed his work or the Pullman service be terminated. The Negro is working now. One Rev. H. Harsha, of Colorado, feeling confident that he had at last found his "affinity," although at the time having a wife and family, made frequent visits to her room, thinking such should be permissable under the circumstances, which presented themselves so vividly. One night while making one of his usual calls the devine was disturbed by a mob, who dragged him from the room and whipped him without mercy. The men constituting the mob and the worthy divine evidently did not believe alike—"in affinities." Miss Lillian Berry, a graduate of Fisk University, also a Normal graduate of Ypsilanti, was recently given the position as teacher in one of Detroit, Mich., public schools. Miss Berry is fifth in number of Afro-Americans to hold such position. Why not some of our girls seek to ogcupy similar positions in Seattle. Nothing beats a trial but a failure. A man recently, desiring to take unto himself a better half, started on a six-mile drive to soecure the license. After arriving at his destination, some way or other he secured a dog license in place of a marriage license. Not until he had made ready to present them to the Divine, did the man discover that so grave a mistake had been made. The groom-to-be said that he had often heard of wives being taken for birds, but never dogs. The wedding was deferred. PRICE TEN CENTS Political Pot-Pie Who Will be Mayor is still the all absorbing question among the politicians of Seattle. The gossiping is, for the most part, among the Republicans, as there are not enough Democrats in town to even gossip, without making themselves complete laughing stocks, and this is said without overlooking the fact that Seattle has a Democratic mayor, who was elected by Republicans in order to teach the "jim agnew ring" a thing or two, more particularly that a few pothouse politicians could not meet in Frank Clancy's saloon office and dictate a Republican ticket for Seattle and then force the Republicans to support it, willing or unwilling. Under the new law it is possible to eliminate the "jim agnew ring" and to do this and at the same time look out for the best interest of the city, is giving the business men a bit of worry. Each week and almost each day, brings the name of some additional business man to the front for the nomination and such business man promptly declines, which is of all the most perplexing, as business men do not seem to be sufficiently interested in the city's welfare to sacrifice a small part of their time for the good of the city. The Candidates.—That the reader may be thoroughly posted on the names of the men who seem more or less willing to accept the nomination for mayor at the hands of the Republican party, the Pie-maker will give them about in the order that they "butted in:" John E. Humphries, Lewy Levy, Thomas P. Revelle, Charles H. Burnett, George H. Walker, Josiah Collins, W. P. Trimble and R. H. Thomson. Discussing the personality of each of these candidates briefly may also be of some importance to the voters who seem to be thinking a bit on the matter, which may be seen below: John E. Humphries has frequently been a candidate for various nominations, but claims that he has been eliminated against the will of the people by the bosses, either in the interest of some other candidate with a stronger pull, or in the interest of the corporations of the city or state. Now that the people will have the direct right to speak he proposes to go before them for the mayoralty nomination. Mr. Humphries' friends declare he is strong with the labor vote, will draw heavily from the secret society vote and is a Republican of good standing and will therefore get his share of that vote. It is claimed that he will duplicate the Moore administration if elected, so far as "kepeing the lid on" is concerned. The Hon. Lewy Levy, who was once elected representative to the legislature of this state, is a business man of the city, and in that capacity stands well. If elected Mr. Levy proposes to give the people just what they want, that is to say, if they want a closed town and ask for it he will give it to them, and vice versa. He is looked upon as a liberal man's candidate and he believes that on that line he will win out hands down. He too lays some claim to the labor vote and with the aid of the liberal vote down town as well as on the hill he hopes to outstrip his competitors by a most decided plurality. Thomas P. Revelle has not definitely announced that he will be a candidate for mayor, lest in doing so he ruin his chances to succeed himself in the council from the Seventh ward. He believes that he can pull the nomination for councilman hands down and "a bird in the hands is worth two in the bush." He has some strong friends, who are daily urging him to go after the mayoralty nomination, but in this he is making haste slowly. Should he run he would expect to get the hill vote, or in other words, he would expect to receive the support of the Keep the Lid 2 On vote and likewise those voters who wanted a free market, for which he worked so hard and successfully. Mr. Revelle really wants to be mayor as do both the other two gentlemen already mentioned. Charles H. Burnett, who is a member of the council from the city at large, who lives in the Ninth ward; may want to be mayor, but he is not ready to announce himself as yet. While Mr. Burnett is more or less popular among the voters, he has friends who do not think he has mixed in politics long enough to be mayor of so large a city as Seattle, although, be it said to his credit, during the absence of Mayor Moore, Acting Mayor Burnett showed that he was no novice at the business of being mayor. He believes that he has a strong pull on the labor vote, a still stronger pull on the young Republican vote and would not be opposed by the church vote to any great extent. On the whole it can be said of Charley Burnett that he will make it interesting for the other candidates if he decides to get in to the fight. *** Charles H. Walker's name has been mentioned by quite a number of business men, but he absolutely refuses to become a candidate, hence there seems little or no use of discussing his M. H. prospects of getting the nomination. One man may take a horse to water, but a hundred can not make him drink, if it does not want to do so. Mr. Walker was recently elected president of the Rainier Club over Samuel Hill, backed by the younger element of the club, which shows that he is very popular with the big business men of the city. Josiah Collins, it is claimed, wants to be mayor of Seattle and especially for the ensuing two years, in view of the fact that the mayor for those two years will have to do a great deal of entertaining persons of prominence from other parts of the world and country, which thing Mr. Collins loves to do. He has been a candidate before and the public is to an extent acquainted with him as a politician. He is being backed by some of the leading business men of the city and, it is claimed, he has a strong following among the middle classes as well as many firm friends among the poorer classes. While he has not positively announced his candidacy he will do so at the proper time, providing he gets the kind of encouragement in the meantime that meets his political approval. * * * Josiah Collins, it is claimed, wants to be mayor of Seattle and especially for the ensuing two years, in view of the fact that the mayor for those two years will have to do a great deal of entertaining persons of prominence from other parts of the world and country, which thing Mr. Collins loves to do. Trimble's name has within the past week been repeatedly mentioned in connection with the Republican nomination for mayor and THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN THE SERVICE [Name] CHARLES H. BURNETT. M. H. LEWY LEVY. LEWY LEVY. [Picture of a man in a suit with a badge on his lapel.] JOHN E. HUMPHRIES. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 18, 1907 it has inspired more or less enthusiasm. He is being backed by quite a number of the leading business men of the city and it is said by them that he will accept the nomination if given him. Not only will he accept it, but, if given the proper encouragement, he will get out and drill for it. As has already been said, for the ensuing two years the mayor of Seattle will be a very much called upon personage and the salary attached to the office will be a mere bagatelle in comparison with what he will have to spend, but Mr. Trimble is a man of ample means to meet all the demands that may be exacted of him in the way of entertaining visitors to the best advantage of the city of Seattle, in which he is very deeply interested. He is a man of sterling integrity and would, therefore, be beyond the approach of either the briber or the grafter. He has won his spurs as a business man and has sufficient legal training to enable him to take care of the city's best interest in the matter of dispensing franchises to corporations. If elected mayor he would give the city one of the best, if not the very best administrations she has ever had. When a man is able to give his time and means to build up a city at a time when it needs just such a man worst, it seems that the people of such a city stand in their own light when they do not elect him to the chief executive office. Mr. Trimble, as already stated, is being groomed by some of M. H. JOSIAH COLLINS. the biggest business men in \he city and should not be opposed by the lesser ones. *** Reginald H. Thomson, as said in last week's Seattle Republican, is being groomed for mayor by his friends. Mr. Thomson says he is not a candidate for the nomination, but does not say that he will not accept the nomination if tendered him, and his friends, who are supporting him, say that he will do so. There is one strong thing in Thomson's favor and that is, he is being opposed by the Blethen Twins and the voters of Seattle are always anxious to vote for any one or any thing that the Blethen Twins oppose. As city engineer it is claimed by the leading business men that his place cannot be filled, and for him to give it up would be a real calamity to the city. Mr. Thomson is said to have the P.-I. at his back, but this is hardly probable as the owners of that paper will hardly demand the nomination of any one. *** Scott Calhoun has also been mentioned for the mayoralty nomination, but he is not anxious to get in the fight, though it is hinted that he may do so in order to strengthen his coming fight to unseat Will E. Humphrey in Congress. Calhoun is a very popular young Repuglican and would give the other fellows a merry chase for FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1907. the nomination unless it became noised about that he was Senator Piles' candidate for mayor. If the Senator butts in the mayoralty fight he is going to get his fingers burnt, all the same Ankeny in Walla Walla. Three men who have figured quite prominently in public matters along Democratic lines since Washington was admitted as a state have been mentioned this week as possible candidates for governor. They are Charles S. Voorhees, a prominent attorney of Spokane, Mayor William Hickman Moore of Seattle, and C. G. Heifner, a well known Seattle attorney. It is reported on good authority that Attorney General John D. Atkinson will be a candidate for the nomination for governor on the Republican ticket next year. With Mead and McBride candidates from the west side of the state, and Cosgrove and Atkinson from the east side, Mr. Atkinson stands a good chance of securing the nomination and being the next governor of the state of Washington. He has made an excellent record as attorney general and his wide and varied knowledge of state affairs makes him peculiarly fitted to fill the high and exalted position of governor of this commonwealth.—Hartline Standard. GOV. McBRIDE'S SUPPORTERS. If former Gov. McBride intends to be a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor the first thing he needs to do is to repudiate publicly and emphatically the support of the worthies who are reported to be his new political sponsers, i. e.: the notorious railroad lobbyists, Geo. Stevenson, C. P. Chamberlain, State Senator Sumner who was one of the rotten railroad bunch of senators which held up every bill intended to correct railroad abuses, D. B. Crocker, the collector of internal revenue and dispenser of a portion of Ankeny's revenue and his partner Geo. Baker, the United States Marshal. The Journal was an admirer and strong supporter of McBride in the days when he was making his fight for a railroad commission against the very men who are now reported to be his main supporters. It was their bitter opposition before the people that gave McBride his strength before the people but these very people who were his ardent supporters can see only complete surrender to the corporations on his part if he permits himself to be obligated in any way to such a bunch. The present efficient railroad commission is the outcome of the agitation which McBride carried on and which the bunch of politicians named opposed most bitterly. In his candidacy he would naturally have the prestige of having passed the commission bill and of having gone to temporary defeat in fighting for the principle of it. For him now to become the candidate of the very interests he formerly opposed would be to stultify himself. Mr. McBride hasn't yet formally announced his candidacy and it is not at all certain that he ever will, but should he be an active candidate his best and most sincere friends will look for the old time fearless denunciations of such men as Stevenson and their methods with that ring of sincerity in them which won for him the enthusiastic support he formerly had.—South Bend Journal. The Office of The Seattle Republican is now 307 Epler Block Main 305 THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN HACK'S HAPPY HITS. Be Honest and you will always be happy. One may not be able to always meet all of their obligations, but you can always be honest about them and you will be respected a thousand times more even though your creditor sue you on account. Denouncing the white man that gives you the opportunity to earn your daily bread is a ridiculous absurdity some Afro-Americans occasionally drift into, especially when they are assembled together. A man who keeps a business exclusively for whites was overheard indulging in the same kind of cheap rot and lowered his voice to keep his customers from hearing his tirade against the whites. Politeness Costs Nothing, yet some folk give it so begrudgingly that one would think they had to pay an exorbitant price for it. Whether you personally like another or not, if you happen to come in contact with such person you will feel a whole lot better if you treat them civilly. An uncouth person is unfit to mingle with the human family. A Course in Politeness should be the first step some youths should take before starting out into manhood, as their sense of common behavior in public gatherings and on the streets and especially when females of their own race are met, impresses one as more on the order of a bull on a Texas range than that of a citizen of a civilized community. Let Afrc-Americans open places of accommodation for the benefit of the general public and not for the exclusive accommodation of no one class. It's not to play even that such places exist, but to demonstrate that the drawing of the color line is not essential to the success of any business enterprise. Throwing Stones at some one else when you yourself live in a glass house, figuratively speaking, and when stones may be obtained by the other fellow at no greater effort than it cost to get yours, is exceedingly poor policy. If you do not agree with some one else just cut him or her out and save worry. "Familiarity Breeds Contempt" is an old saw, but a very true one. It matters not how well you are acquainted with a woman at her home, be it your own wife, sister or daughter, it is the act of a gentleman on meeting her in public to treat her as if she was a queen and you but a subject. For you to be unduly familiar with a lady in public opens the door for strangers to act in a similar manner. A False Idea is too often put out concerning some movement that is started to the effect that it is a selfish move and intended only to benefit some one person. Suppose it does, in which way are you injured. When to boost a proposition along that will mean a gain to some one at no cost to you, save your occasional presence, what will you lose by cheerfully giving it the benefit of your presence? The Very Best in the market should be exacted by the Afro?Americans of their public men and places. It's foolish for even Afro-American publis men to think that the Afro-Americans should turn out to listen to him or her for no other reason than because they are all of the same color. If you can not furnish food for thought then you should go away back and sit down. An Ohio man, one day last week, met with sudden death, caused by an automobile passing him, going at an extremely rapid gait. The shock brought on heart trouble and death followed instantly. Phone Main 305 when you want a legal notice published. You always get a square deal at The Seattle Republican. Main 305. 3 IN THE REALM OF RELIGION. Rev. W. A. Major has broken the record for holding continuous pastorates in the city of Seattle, having been the pastor of the Bethany Prysbyterian church of this city for the past fourteen years. Owing to the rapid growth of the city it has been very hard for the pastors in the various churches to keep in harmony with the members and therefore his resignation was, if not actually asked for, seemed the best thing for the good of the organization, hence it was forthcoming and accepted, but Rev. Majors has gone on from year to year in perfect harmony with his members and still enjoys their perfect confidence and will doubtless continue doing so for many months to come. Rev. F. L. Donohoo, of Lee's Chapel, on Fourteenth avenue, seems much disturbed because all of the Afro-Americans of the city do not attend his church, and to impress it the more on the readers of the evening Times, to whom he told his troubles, he had his picture put in the paper at the same time. So long as the African Methodist Episcopal conference sends men to the pastorate of its church in this city who are uneducated and who would rather fight than pray, the number attending will be even less than at present, and that is saying a good deal. Rev. Donohoo seems to be of the opinion that every Afro-American that does not attend his church is an enemy to the race, not stopping to remember that, perhaps he himself is the cause of many of them not attending at least some of the services of his particular church. If the people are not inclined to attend that or any other church it is hardly the proper thing for a preacher to come out in one of the daily papers abusing them for not doing so. Why, if he was so anxious for Negroes to attend churches in which the pastors are Negroes, did he not take his troubles to one or the other of the papers published in the city in the interest of Negroes? He did not do that because it would not have held the Afro-Americans up to as much ridicule from his way of thinking as to attack them in an evening paper, which same paper held up Henry Gregg to ridicule in a manner as no other paper had held up an Afro-American, but a few days prior. Charity begins at home. The Mt. Zion Baptist Church membership showed the proper spirit when it offered to give the recently organized charity organization quarters in which to meet at a nominal cost. Whatever else may be said about the organization there is one thing certain, if it pursues the course it has mapped out, it will do no harm. While it will not be an adjunct to any particular church organization and purposes to work in perfect harmony with all of them, yet no church should refuse it succor, even more, lend it any aid it possibly can, without injury to itself. The organization is being fought by one of the Afro-American churches in this city, seemingly for no other cause than it did not originate within its walls and did not declare itself to be an adjunct of that particular ism. Are these the teachings of the Lord Jesus? President Norris of the Sunday Forum went on record last Sunday at the regular meeting of the Forum, that so long as he was president of the organization nothing would be done by it that would in anywise conflict with the teachings of the various churches of the city; and that the Forum, so far as he was concerned, would from time to time work in perfect harmony with the various Afro-American churches of the city and would not antagonize any other. While the Forum is not a religious body its object is to do good in the community by endeavoring to elevate those attending its meetings to a higher plain of citizenship, and for that reason only the best things of life will be encouraged. In no other city where such meetings are held are they fought by the pastors of the various churches as they have been in this city and those attending are at a loss to account for it. Hawkins, who recently re- iegenea from the East, entertained the ‘Forum last Sunday with a review of ‘the Afro-American in those cities which he visited. The showing was exceedingly flattering and it should be an incentive to those in Seattle to like- wise get a move on themselves. His remarks concerning the National Ne- gro Business Men’s League were es- pecially interesting and elicted much applause. While attending the ses- sion of the League Mr. Hawkins en- deavered to have it decide to meet in Seattle in 1909, but is uncertain as to the out- come of his invitation. The Forum and other organizations interested in the Afro-American would do well to have representatives at the next meet- ing of the League to work for Seattle as the 1909 meeting place. Thea, as the playwright has ‘made the main figure the center of the story, which is one of exceptional rower, the attention is naturally all the more enchained. Again, S. Miller Kent, who plays Raffles, has co a marked degree the ease of manner, the coo air and force of quiet art that the character particularly calls for.
