Billy Humphrey may look good in a newspaper, but in person he is an iceberg.
What on earth can be the matter with Dr. Matthews that he has not broken loose in a whole week? Is the good doctor lost, strayed or stolen?

Instead of financial legislation by Congress for the good of the country a few prison stripes for legislators might bring about more lasting results.
Men with money have been hoping to be able to kick up a muss in the financial circles of this country in time to bring about complications for the next presidential campaign, and it begins to look as if they will be eminently successful.
Governor Vardeman is mistaken when he says, "this republic of ours is tottering to its fall," although we must admit Vardeman, Tillman, and their ilk make an awful heavy olad for it to wag with.

There being nothing else by which Harry Thaw could be under the lime-light the "yellows" picked up his sister's poor state of health and are making it do the sensation act prior to the beginning of Thaw's second trial.
Col. Alden J. Times says, "Seattle women are guilty of going to the claims department of the S. E. C. and work the man in charge for an umbrella." Perhaps some women are depraved enough to do such a thing, but proud American women are not given to such malicious lying and petty pilfering, as the Colonel would have us believe. Saw it in the Times—Damn lie.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1907.
The wife of a Chicago man named Moses has eloped with a Mr. Light. Once more it will be inquired: Where was Moses when the Light went out?
That Knoxville black man who confessed to having killed twenty-eight persons during his life, and committed suicide after he had been arrested in the presence of hundreds of spectators, finally did just what a great majority of the white men of the South should do.
Had that Pullman car porter thrown that over fastidious gentleman, who is now sueing the Northern Pacific for $25,000, alleging that he was twice assaulted by the porter, off of the train into one of those almost fathomless mountain gorges by which the train passes, the community would have been well rid of bad rubbish.
Of course any one that ever had a conversation with Melody Choir was not very long in discovering that he was as crazy as a bedbug and now thinks that the calling of a jury to decide whether or not he was insane is simply a willful waste of time and money. It was a matter of course that he was as mad as a march hare.
Will some one gently hint to President Roosevelt that while he is a popular president he is a poor political dictator?
Clearinghouse Certificates or any other old kind are taken at this office in payment for subscriptions. Even a bogushouse certificate beats some we have been getting.
That Seattle is to have a Battle royal for the mayorality next spring is seen in the actions of the local Democratic club in endorsing Alfred for this high honor, which we fear is so high that it will require a stepladder instead of a battle to attain it.
Be broad in your opinions of other folk if you would really have other folk entertain the highest regard for your opinions. God made all men and made them to suit Himself rather than their fellow men.
The money stringency in Seattle has caused some alarm and perhaps excitement among the depositors and prompted many of them to attempt to withdraw their deposits from the banks and to forestall that, the banks adopted a novel method to protect themselves. The clearing house certificate plan is none other than a volunteer receivership and if everything works out all O.K. those certificates will all be redeemed and the depositor none the worse from his or her experience. We do not believe there is any cause for alarm and there certainly will not be any if the persons with money in the banks will just let it alone.

Socialism always ends in the destruction of that freedom which it sets out to achieve. Its history is the old story of the man who starts out for wool and returns shorn. It is a metaphysical theory; and its advocates always unite in a church or a party to which they surrender all their natural rights, and which ends in feudalism or a hierarchy. Mormonism is the best example of socialism in this country.—Aberdeen Herald.
ANYTHING THAT'S HONORABLE.
WANTED-An energetic young man; one who is willing to do anything.
Some few years ago the above advertisement appeared in a newspaper in a certain city. There were but few responses. Those who did respond were dissuaded from accepting by that "to do anything." Among the few applicants was a bright young colored man, fresh from school, and with high and lofty ideas. He felt that he was capable of filling a good position. He knew that he was honest, and those who knew him best were aware of the fact that he was energetic. When he appeared before the manager of the company advertising, he was asked the usual stereotyped questions about his age, his family, where he worked last, etc., and finally, when the manager was satisfied with the answers to these questions he advised him what the duties were—wholly menial, but added: "We want a young man willing and capable to do anything we assign to him." To this young man that final stipulation—"willing to do anything"—suggested hope. It carried with it the impression that if a man was willing to do anything, that "anything" might, after a while, border on the domain of mental labor—might mean a good salary and a position of trust and importance.
"Do you think you would be willing to do anything assigned to you to do?" asked the manager.
"Anything that's honorable," came the prompt reply.
"Well, we will give you a trial; you may report tomorrow morning," replied the manager.
"Anything that's honorable!" What an inspiration in that reply. How it teems with loftiness of purpose. What earnestness it conveys. It's the young man that is willing to do "anything that's honorable" who succeeds. The young men who were willing to begin by doing "anything that's honorable" are the men who today are shaping the destiny of the world. They are now the peers in the professions, the leaders in commerce, the masters of finance. Be willing to do "anything that's honorable" and you have possession of the key that unlocks the future's granary piled from floor to roof with the greatest sustenance of life.—Success.

BENCH AND BAR.
John F. Miller, chief deputy in the office of the prosecuting attorney of King county, is said to be slated for one of the Alaska judgships to succeed James Wickersham. Miller is being pushed by R. A. Ballinger, now of Washington City.
From statistics recently compiled for the first nine months of the current year, 1299 deaths by violence occurred in the city of Chicago. Of this number 284 were suicides and the most of these were committed for fancied love unrequited.
It is rumored that John F. Main, one of the teachers in the law department at the University of Washington, contemplates entering the race for one of the judicial nominees of the Superior Court of King county. Here is a Main that will lead to success.
Kenneth Mackintosh, the prosecuting attorney of King county, is said to have an eye single to one of the Superior Court judgements of King county. Once Mr. Mackintosh coveted the nomination for representative to Congress in lieu of Will E. Humphrey, but he is willing to wait for a while for that boomlet to grow.
If there be such a thing as luck Elemer E. Todd has played in the biggest luck of any attorney at the King county bar. It was mere chance that gave him a place in Sam Piles' office as a law student. Piles placed him as a deputy in the office of Prosecuting Attorney W. T. Scott. For Piles' own political good Todd was nominated and elected to the legislature, which elected Piles to the United States senate. Piles, in lieu of a better place, forced Scott Calhoun to name him as chief deputy in the corporation counsel's office. Thinking Todd was not making sufficient money in this position he and his friends created some special city work, which was given to Todd as a side issue to whatever regular work he could pick up, and he resigned to go in "for himself." Piles finally named him United States district attorney to succeed Charley Sullivan. It will thus be seen that he has been a creature of favorable circumstances ever since he entered the legal arena. There are those, however, who say that Elmer Todd has not the ability to successfully fill the places which have been given to him from time to time, and that more deserving Republicans should have been remembered.
WISE AND OTHERWISE
The advocates of Esperanto are making desperate struggles to have it become a fixed language, but the folk don't seem inclined to take to it.
At least one Afro-American in the State of Alabama is making good, if reports be true, as he has already invented several car-couplers, the sale of which has netted him about $40,000, and he is now working to invent a perfect car-coupler as a safety device, the perfection of which the United States government has offered a large sum as a premium.
THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN
Speaking about the Superior Court judgship for King county I am desirous of seeing some fifty or more aspirants enter the race and that list should include men of all parties, classes and kinds. If this be done the bench will be free from outside influence," said a leading attorney one day this week
The death of Capt. John L. Waller is reported from Yonkers, N. Y. It will be remembered of Capt. Waller that while a consul to Madagascar he was arrested by the French authorities for sedition. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment. While it seemed that he was guilty as charged, nevertheless the United States Government interfered and before he reached a French prison he was pardoned, but forbidden the right to again enter French territory.
King Menelik of Abysinia is about to adopt the white man's methods of conducting his government. Menelik is said to be the last of the black kings of Africa and one of the most progressive of the country. He already has a stable form of government and if he adopts the modern methods of doing things he will doubtless lay the foundation for a strong government for the blacks of Africa, which will sooner or later rule the most of the dark continent.
The proverbial ignorance of the average white man of the South, who live in the rural districts, may be seen in a prisoner, who is now confined at Walla Walla, but whose term will soon expire, was told by Governor Mead that he would pardon him before his term expired, appealed to the governor to inform him where he could take out his citizen's papers, as he did not desire to return to Arkansas and had been informed by his fellow prisoners that he would have to take out naturalization papers in order to remain in this state. Where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise.
A Chicago woman has instituted proceedings for divorce against her husband who habitually washes the dishes and makes the beds. Some women are mighty hard to suit.
I would rather be a great actress or writer or artist than have all the wealth or social position I could command, because the woman with a profession has achieved something, she lives a life of growth and power. It is the power that counts and the development of one's individuality is the greatest thing after all. I sincerely believe women can be wholly emancipated intellectually if they determine to improve themselves. It rests with the individual woman entirely. I firmly believe that a woman may become anything she wills to become. I believe that the great force, the one eternal energy which we call God, is at the command of every human being. Any woman who has it in her to progress can, by summoning this force to her aid, rise to any height she desires in this world.—Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish.

BORROWED THOUGHTS.
(Columbia County Dispatch.)
With Mr. Roosevelt entertaining the home folks, Mr. Root, the Mexicans, and Mr. Taft the Japanese, the balance of the world must view the situation as something in the nature of a three-ring circus. We have an idea that the London physician who insists that the prettiest women are invariably the stupidest, is trying to square up something with somebody.
The Columbus, Ohio, common council is considering a way and means of preventing people from committing suicide in that city. Why not furnish them with the means to get out of town?
The Los Angeles Express thinks J. Hamilton Lewis in the Illinois governor's chair would be one great revolving pinwheel. Still, that's better than having a skyrocket there.
A Chicago woman has sued a dentist for $10,000 damages because in extracting her tooth, he injured her jaw to such an extent, that she cannot speak. Depriving a woman of her chief luxury in life certainly is a grave offense.
A New York Republican leader has announced that the next Republican presidential nominee must be a man of push. Possibly he thinks the elephant isn't going to run very well next year.
Mr. Watterson designates a certain obstreperous individual as "a liar, a hegoat and a polecat in the bargain." "Marse Henry" is coming dangerously near to nature-faking. Ethnologist Stefgansson gained 20 pounds while living with the Eskimos. Is he going to start the fad of eating whale-blubber and fried ice? "We must walk in the light," says Mr. John D. Rockefeller. And while he doesn't say it, it is not to be doubted that he means "the kerosene light."
An irate Iowan speaks of a political rival as "a pultroon, a liar, a fake and scoundrel." Outside of that, however, he is doubtless all right.
(Sunnyside Republican.)
Some people never have to borrow trouble. They create enough for a whole community. Henry Watterson seems to shun the Bryan wagon, just the same as he does the water wagon. Secretary Taft's friends would like to have President Roosevelt ask for cards or get out of the game.
Afro-Americans are always exhorting each other that to succeed they must get together, but for the most part that's the time when their troubles begin. For they no sooner get together than they get apart on some technicality that's of no importance one way or the other.
For robbing a white boy of seventy-five cents a Georgia Negro was lynched one day this week by a mob of whites. The unmentionable crime is gradually growing so as to take in any offense the black man in the South may commit.

You took the wrong pup out to drown—
I told you so!
I knew your watch could not keep time—

I warned you not to touch that meat,

The paper read by Mr. I. I. Walker last Sunday at the Forum entitled "Our Women" was, to say the least, one of the most instructive paptrs that
THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN
the Forum has listened to since it has been organized. The man or woman who heard it could not help but go away from the room with a thousand times higher regard for the women of his race than before. It is said of Afro-American men that they do not have the high regard for the women of their race that the men of other races do, which is responsible for the wholesale accusation of the Tillman tribe that the whole female end of the Negro race is immoral. It is said of some Afro-American men that they never become well acquainted with a woman of their race, but that they make improper advances to her whether an opportunity is or is not given them. If such be true it is a sad commentary on the men of the race, and it is time that they were making improvement along the moral line.
Next Sunday afternoon the Forum will be entertained by the four visiting members of the Foreign Missionary Board of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which is now in session in the city. It is expected that each of them will deliver short addresses in response to a welcome address on the part of the president. The speaking will be interspersed with vocal and instrumental selections. Miss Emily Verna Houston and Mr. Leo Fletcher will render a duet; Miss Gertrude Crisman will render a solo, as will Miss Eva Ford. A cordial invitation is extended to all to be present to the exercises.

While straw hats and summer drinks are still the order of the day, comes the announcement that the local theatre will offer what promises to be one of the most notable of the bookings of the year, "The Yankee Regent." While coming under the class of musical comedies, by the beauty of its score and cleverness of its book and lyrics it comes near being entitled to a place in the ranks of the higher grade of lighter opera.
Mr. Ben M. Jerome, who wrote the music, gave us a tuneful fantasy in his production of the "Isle of Spice," and the enormous success of that creation led many to believe that he had written his masterpiece, but the phenomenal run of "The Yankee Regent" on the occasion of its initial production can be attributed to nothing more than the beauty of Mr. Jerome's music. While the plot discloses a decided innovation in musical comedy and furnishes a half score or more of funmakers, with a prolific opportunity to entertain, its music would have made "The Yankee Regent" famous had the book been of the ordinary. A carefully selected company headed by Mr. Toby Lyons, past master as a funmaker and who will be remembered for his work in the part of the "Goo Goo Man" in the "Isle of Spice," is assured.
This attraction appears at the Seattle Theatre for a week's engagement, commencing Sunday afternoon, and also with the usual Thursday and Saturday matinees.
