In an address before the students of Howard University, Andrew Carnegie sums up the race problem in the following words: "It is not now a question of what will we with the Negro, but how can we get more them." In other words, if we are to adicate crime from the universe we must breed more criminals. If we are to maintain a high intellectual standard we must breed more mental weaklings. If we are to maintain a high standard of citizenship we must breed more children who are utterly incapable of developing into good citizens. Mr gie has evidently borrowed from the bpaths the axim, "What causes a disswill cure it," and applied the same remko social problems.—Wilber Register. Who, in heaven's name, are the real criminals of the South, the blacks or the whites? What the blacks are more or less given to sit pilfering and occasionally graverenses is not denied, but are they to be combed with the reign of terror that the whites have caused to exist in every state south of Mason and Dixon line for the past thirty years or more? How few the mruders and rapes committed by the black man of the South in comparison to the wholesale carnage of human gore and innumerable rapes on innocent women that can be laid at the white man's door? Granted the black man occasionally rapes an innocent white woman, even then it not the white man a million times more criminal than the black man, for does not he desire to criminally cohabit with every black woman with whom he comes in contact? Is there a single home in the South where live a white father and son in which a black woman is safe to work even as a servant without being criminally assaulted by one or both of them? Would you pronounce such either right, religious or refining? Do you think the black woman or the white man the aggressor in such illicit relations? If the millions of mulattos of this country are not criminals from the time of their birth until their death, then it is not because they were not conceived in sin and born in iniquity, and we do not believe you are willing to declare the black woman is wholly responsible for such a state of affairs. The innocent white woman, who is occasionally misused by some burly black brute, gets the sympathy of all Christendom, THE SEATTLE REPUBLI SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29. [Name not provided] J. Will Lysons, Secretary of the Senate who is under fire in connection with the direct primary law, which Senators Cotterill and Metcalf declare was tampered with after it had been passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. Mr. Lysons is endeavoring to defend himself, but he is being indirectly scored by the big papers of the state in no uncertain language. but comes not a word of sympathy for the poor black woman, who, either by force or violence or by the superior intellect of the white man, is made a human outcast to satisfy his damnable passions and to doubly guarantee the virgin purity of the white woman. The three or four million mulattos in the United States are living evidences that the blacks are being rapidly absorbed by the whites, and one almost shudders to think that all this is the work of the white man, the very one who is burning black men at the stake, if they show the slightest sign of even becoming familiar with the white woman. It's an easy matter for you to see the pigeon on the barn, but next to impossible to see the barn. Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, says, "no Negro woman is virtuous." From the number of mulattos in the state of South Carolina there seems to be some truth in the statement, but the senator failed to tell us how many virtuous white men there were in South Carolina. In the struggle to preserve the honor and chastity of the white folk, does none of the responsibility rest on the white man? Are the men of the white race licensed to live lives of moral lepers and expect the honor, integrity and uprightness of their white offspring to be wholly dependent on their mothers? Instead of heaping coals upon the heads of the poor untutored PRICE TEN CENTS black folk, who are making a noble struggle to rise triumphantly from the pits of slum to which they were forced by the hands of the white men of the South, let the white man of the North stand out for simple justice for the black man. Only that and nothing more. Insist that he gets no more or less than what he deserves. Let the spirit of fairness prevail. Do not measure the degree of the crime committed by the color of the skin of the criminal. Even where the black man commits heinous crime on white women, did it ever occur to you that perhaps he was simply retaliating for the moral wreck of a darling daughter who had fallen a victim to the lusts of some heartless white man, who, if criticised by an older head, laconicly replies, "She was only a nigger." Do not forget that a God above sees it all and His recording angel is writing it down. Saw it in the Times? Damn lie. Every line, sentence and word in the obituary notice of the Morning Times was not only a misrepresentation but the most blankety-blank falsehood. "Seattle's Only Real Morning Newspaper" was, after all, "not the real thing." "I told you so." "Fools rush in where angels dare not, tread." "Experience is a dear teacher, but fools will have no other." And so the Morning times, after eight months of life's fitful fever, now rests safely in the bosom of the honeyard. "Rest thee, there is no prouder grave even in thine own proud clime." Slowly but surely the web is being woven about the hero of Grover Cleveland fame, and as in Kansas City and Minneapolis, so will the harvest be in Seattle. Vale The Morning Times, "Seattle's Only Real Morning Newspaper." It is not IT; it is nit. What Constitutes a Democrat? was discussed at the Democratic Club one day this week. We are not prepared to say just what constitutes a Democrat in these days of Bryanism, but in the past treason, strategy, spoils, riot and rebellion were the chief ingredients of a Democrat. The above were, however, temporarily superseded by 16 to 1, but the South is working hard to get back to the old basic Democratic principles. In the past "the jay from the country" always greatly amused the city folk in his make-up and general deportment, but the jay from the country has been supplanted with the "money bag of the farm," and such folk are extremely interesting now to the city folk, so much so that to be able to successfully play the farmer dodge in the city means that the bankers, merchants and capitalists all fall down at your feet, and the bunko man finds this a harvest home festival for his avarice to get money. Bryan seems to have the White House disease, and that, too, in an incurable form. LIBRARY UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON APR 29 1950 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mr. C. C. Hancock and Miss E. V. Houston were married Saturday, November 23rd. A pleasing literary program was rendered at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church last Monday evening, after which refreshments were served. Mr. Fort, who takes the lead in this work, is to be congratulated for the good he is doing. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Ryan of Tacoma, proprietors of the Forum published in that city, were visitors in Seattle last Wednesday. They have established a business a little different from that ever undertaken by an Afro-Americans in this section of the country and when more of them do business from a business standpoint and cease to play to the galleries more genuine success will attend their efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Purnell, whose marriage was reported last week, left last Friday for San Francisco, where, so far as they knew when they left, they would make their home. Mme. Boyer of Everett, who conducts an extensive hair store in Everett, is desirous of getting an elderly woman to stay at her home while she is away. Such woman would be expected to care for a small child and assist about the house. A good home and moderate wages are guaranteed. By addressing Mme. Boyer, Everett, Washington, more particulars may be learned. Mr. James E. Shepperson of Roslyn, Washington, has been visiting in the city for the most part of the present week. "There is nothing new or startling about the mines and work is as good as could be expected under the circumstances," he said. TACOMA A. M. E. CHURCH. The following report published in the Sunday Morning Echo of Tacoma, a paper recently established by Gustave B. Aldrich, on the condition of the A. M. E. Church of that city, will be read with more or less interest by the chruch folk of this city in view of the fact that the pastor is Rev. Church in Seattle for a number of Freeman, who pastored the A. M. E. years: The first Quarterly Conference of Allen A. M. E. Church was held in THEATRE THEATRE SCENE FROM THE ROLLICKING GIRL ```markdown ``` the Church, 1411 So. Yakima avenue, Monday evening. Dr. John C. Coleman, P. E. of Everett, Wash., presiding. The conference was largely attended and great interest was manifested and all the reports were very gratifying to the Presiding Elder, pastor, members and congregation. Since the annual conference, the pastor and his able board of trustees have succeeded in raising the necessary money to remodel, paper and beautify the church building. During the quarter the trustees have raised $465.21; the Stewards board $152.73; Ladies' Aid society $48.80; the W. H. M. society $42.45; Sunday school, $12.05; Excelsior club, $34; Allen C. E. league $8.06. Making a total of $763.30 raised by the church since the first of last September. The church has a membership of 66 and the Sunday school 60 pupils. The spiritual condition of the church has not been overlooked, as 13 members have been added to the church and 5 adults and 4 infants have been baptized. A FORGOTTEN TOAST. We happened in a home the other night and over the parlor door saw the legend worked in letters of red, "What Is Home Without a Mother?" Across the room was another brief, "God Bless Our Home." Now what is the matter with "God Bless Our Dad?" He gets up early, lights the fire, boils an egg, and wipes off the dew of the lawn with his boots, while many a mother is sleeping. He makes the weekly handout for the butcher, the grocer, the milkman, the baker, and his little pile is badly worn before he has been home an hour. If there is a noise during the night dad is kicked in the back and made to go down stairs to find the burglar and kill him. Mother darns the socks, but dad bought the socks in the first place, and the needles and the yarn afterward. Mother puts up the fruit; well, dad bought it all, and jars and sugar cost like the very mischief. Dad buys the chicken for the Sunday dinner, carves it himself, and draws the neck from the ruins after everyone is served. "What is home without a mother?" Yes, that is all right; but what is home without a father? Ten chances to one it's a boarding house, father is under the slab and the landlady is the widow. Dad, here's to you—you've got your faults—you may have lots of 'em—but you are all right and we miss you when you're gone.—Exchange. 2 ```markdown ``` THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN The Seattle Theatre has the best musical attraction this week that they have had this season. "The Royal Chef" is a credit to Messrs. Wade and Frazee, who are managing en toure. To begin with, the girls are the best looking bunch seen here in a musical comedy for a year, and what is better, they can all sing; and the pony ballet of "broilers" are unexcelled in any musical show of the season. Miss Gertrude Hutchinson, as Princess Toto, sings several numbers that are appreciated more than Melba's localization was, and her voice is sweeter, while her stage presence is delightful. William J. McCarty is one of the best comedians that comes to the West; his "Royal Chef" is a splendid piece of national acting. The Rajah, as played by Oscar Ragland, could not be duplicated, for the reason that his personality constitutes the character. There are lots of other clever people in "The Royal Chef," and the music is irresistible and of the most popular and whistly kind. "The Rollicking Girl," another big musical comedy, opens at the Seattle Theatre next Sunday afternoon, coming here direct from New York, and for the first time in its history. This is what is known as a Frohman attraction. The company is headed by Snitz Edwards and Lila Blow; the former is one of the best German comedians in the country, the latter will make her presence known before she is in Seattle many hours. The scene of the play is laid in a Hungarian village, and although the scenes are European, the action, songs, etc., are American products set in a European frame. The scenery and costuming of "The Rollicking Girl" are undoubtedly the most picturesque and brilliant that have been seen here this season. The company is a very large one, yet there will be no raise in prices at the Seattle Theatre during this engagement. Go to a respectable place to borrow money on diamonds, jewelry and watches. Brewery at Interbay Queen Anne 1088 Ind. 7396 2 Political Pot-Pie There are certain leading men in Seattle that are still on the lookout for a suitable mayoralty candidate despite the fact that quite a number of gentlemen have already signified their willingness to offer themselves up to be sacrificed upon the political alter for the position. All of them have been thoroughly scrutinized by the aforesaid leading men of the city and none of them came up to the scratch. In other words they were all weighed in a balance and found wanting, hence the search continues. The searching permit us to say is on the part of the Republicans, as the Democrats are forced to accept Hobson's choice, Billy Moore or nothing. * * * The announced Republican candidates for the mayoralty honor thus far are John E. Humphries, Louis Levy, William P. Trimble, Josiah Collins and Thomas P. Revelle. As said above these gentlemen have actually announced their intention of filing their application to have their names placed on the primary ballot to be voted for at the primary election for the Republican nomination for mayor. They are named about in the order in which they announced themselves and by no means as to their relative strength. Other names have been mentioned in connection with the mayoralty nomination, but the men themselves are either unwilling to have their names used in that connection or they think the time not yet ripe for such announcement, hence their reticence. Among those who have been repeatedly mentioned are Clark M. Nettleton, L. H. Gray, John H. McGraw, David W. Bowen and last but nowise least Reginald H. Thomson. It has been said that Mr. Thomson had no objection to making the race, but the corporation counsel has decided that he was ineligible. Those most interested in Mr. Thomson are not altogether satisfied with the opinion or with the terms of the charter and an able attorney is looking up the authorities on the subject as to precedents along the same line and if he finds that Mr. Thomson could legally hold the place the provisions of the city charter to the contrary notwithstanding it is said on very good authority that he will announce his candidacy at once. If Thomson is a candidate it is said that William Hickman Moore will not be a candidate on the opposition ticket, which would mean the election of Thomson beyond the peradventure of a doubt. * * * The leading men of the city are therefore continuing to cast about for a more suitable candidate, but it is very generally believed that they will sooner or later concentrate on William P. Trimble as being the best man of those seeking the place. He is not saying much for publication, but it is said of him that he is sawing wood and if he is not his friends are doing it for him. The only objection yet raised to Trimble is he is not a mixer to the extent that he can rally votes and in case he is decided upon the leading men fear he would not be strong enough with the voters in general to pull them through, but to this Trimble's friends say, bosh. THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN There is no doubt of the fact that Thomas P. Revelle is a very strong candidate and if he cuts loose from his councilmanic hopes and goes in for the nomination for mayor without regards to the outcome he will make a splendid showing. John E. Humphries says he is still growing in strength and has no fears of the outcome of the primary contest. "No one that has been named thus far causes me to loose a single minute's sleep, as I can beat them and never remember that I had an opopnent." Humphries believes that he is twice as strong with the labor voters and municipal ownership believers as Mayor Moore and when he will have been nominated he thinks Moore will not dare to run against him. Louis Levy is just as confident of being nominated as is John E. Humphries and makes no bones of saying that, "it is all over except the shouting." Josiah Collins is simply keeping mum. Whlie he wants the place he has political sense enough to not make any gallery plays and that if the people want him they will find some means of making that fact known to him. * * * Heavy onslaughts are being almost daily made against the direct primary law of this state passed by the legislature and if it is not knocked out before the next state election it will be no fault of its enemies. The last controversy that has arisen over the law is that the prohibition clause was left out by the secretary of the senate after it had been passed by both branches of the legislature and signed by the governor. This the secretary, J. Will Lysons, says is not correct. Senator Cotterill of King and Senator Metcalf of Pierce are equally positive that the bill was tampered with by some one after it had been turned over to the secretary of the senate, and in view of the fact that Mr. Lysons is said to be unfriendly to the new law the two state senators have their misgivings. The bill as a whole is now before the Supreme Court for an opinion as to its legality and until that has been handed down the friends of the new law are not expressing an opinion on the subject one way or the other. It is very generally believed, however, that if the Supreme Court knocks out the law an extra session of the legislature will be called by the governor post haste to remedy any defect that it may have. The Seattle school election just now is attracting some minor consideration, though not very much. The "big ones" of the city have named for members of the school board to be voted for at the next regular school election George Donworth and John Schram. Both of these men are well and favorably known in the city, one an attorney and the other a banker, formerly a hardware man. The labor people have named two well known men in the city as their candidate, Prof. Allen of the State University, and In the past the labor leaders have never put forth a candidate in the school elections. They have either voted for the non-partisan candidates or the Socialist candidate, but they have their fighting clothes on and making ready for the next election. It is said they have registered in very large numbers this year, while the other side has not been very active and they think they stand a show FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 22 of electing both of their candidates. The Seattle Republican, after going over the personnel of the four candidates, has no hesitancy in advising its readers to support for members of the school board George Donworth and John Schram, not because they are wealthy men, but because they are worthy and wealthy and able to give more time to the duties than poorer men. Because they are successful business men of the city and have lived here for the past thirty years and know the needs of the city from a school standpoint much better than their opponents. Mr. Donworth has retired from the active practice of the law and is living practically at his ease and is able to attend to whatever duties that are incumbent on one elected to the position and that, too, without inconveniencing either himself or the other fellow. During his long citizenship here no one has ever known one thing of him that would in any way reflect upon his good name. The same can be said of John Schram and it is therefore hoped that the readers of this paper will spare a few minutes and go to the polls and vote for them and thereby save the schools from falling under the control of men who represent the teachings of isms and demagoguery. PEOPLE OF NOTE. Hon. A. J. Falconer of Everett spent some time in the city one day this week, and while here called on a number of business men as well as some of the men who are interested in politics. Mr. Falconer was speaker of the house of representatives of the last legislature of the state of Washington. * * * State Senator Walter J. Reed was in Seattle one day this week. For some time the senator has been in very poor health, and was East for the purpose of improving it. He has been home for a few weeks and came over to the Sound on public matters. He is a candidate for re-election. Gen. J. B. Metcalf spoke before the Democratic Club last Wednesday evening on the subject of "What It Constitutes to be a Democrat." He is a pleasing speaker and, being a Democrat of the Southern brand, knew well his subject. A good crowd listened to his remarks. Hon. Clarence E. Ide, once a state senator, United States marshal and United States collector of customs at Port Townsend, has recently secured a large sewer contract from the city of Seattle, which he and his partner are now employing an army of men and machinery in building. "I am not in touch with the political checker board of the state, but when the boys need me I will be there with the goods," said he one day this week. W. A. Halteman, a member of the last legislature of the state, who is now looking after some mining properties in Idaho, was recently attacked by a vicious mountain lion while carrying supplies up to the men at work at the mines. He was without weapons with which to defend himself, and was therefore compelled to beat off the hungry beast with his fists, which he successfully did. Mr. Halteman is said to be one of the coming mining magnates of the Northwest. M. H. Manager of the Seattle Theatre, who with other theatre proprietors in Seattle will doubtless be arrested next Monday for opening their doors for business Sunday. Mr. Russell is the pioneer theatre man of Seattle and in his own peculiar way one of the "whitest" men in the Northwest. He is a general favorite with the women and children who patronize his play house, and is a bully good fellow with the men. The fight against the theatres is being watched wit hmuch interest by Sunday theatre goers as well as others. FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 29. Hon. John D. Atkinson, attorney general of the state of Washington, was among those who did business in Seattle this week. It is said that Mr. Atkinson has the gubernatorial been in his bonnet. He hails from Chelan county, but he almost claims Seattle his home, as he taught school here for a number of years. ** ** Editor John H. Ryan of the Tacoma Forum, who has issued three manuals for different legislatures of the state, and one of the successful publishers and printers of Tacoma, was among the outside men who did business in the Hub the past week. Mr. Ryan is busy getting out his Christmas number and of course is not giving politics as much consideration at present as he has and will again as soon as the number is out and the dough collected. He took time to say that, "the senatorial candidacy of the Hon. W. L. Jones is nothing more or less than a huge joke and that Senator Ankeny will beat him so badly in the bout next year that Jones will hardly realize that he was ever running." "WASHINGTON WEEKLY REVIEW." Phillip Henselman of Ilwaco, a famous Indian scout and Mexican war veteran, died at his home last week. He was highly respected in the community where he has resided for the past twenty-five years. W. S. Hunt of Dayton, who has already begun to plant his garden stuff for next spring, says he is taking time by the forelock and is planting garden truck the proper time for it to do well in that vicinity, which sounds rather fishy, but he ought to know more about it than a newspaper man who makes "pot pie" instead of garden truck. Kittitas County Farmers are not being outdone by their city cousins in the way of modern improvements in the shape of home comforts, and they have begun to establish individual lighting plants about their premises. The farmer should seek to make his home just as comfortable as the home of the man in the city, and when that will have been done more generally, then there will be less leaving the country to live in the cities. * * * Ellensburg is boasting of having made the largest registration run in the history of the city in her late preparations for the coming municipal election there. The books closed with a total registration of 757, which was away beyond the registration for any previous election. Now watch Ellensburg grow. Wheat Farming on a big scale is still the order of the day in Eastern Washington, as may be seen from what F. C. Robinson said to the Dayton Dispatch in its last issue. "In my immediate vicinity something like 1,500 acres of wheat have already been planted and the good work still goes on." Wenatchee Authorities have bought land in the very heart of the city for a public park, which is one of the most commendable things that a "country town" has done for a long, long time. What a pity some of the fashionable and more pretention cities would not be equally enterprising. E. W. Ross, state land commissioner, owns a tract of land near Sunnyside and is having the same set to fruit trees. It is said that the products of the orchard will pay for the land and its improvements the second year of its bearing. Snohomish City has passed an expectoration ordinance, and the Tribune of that city is of the opinion that it is the best thing for the town that has happened for a long time. Now see to it that the lubbers do not spit and it will be all right. Walla Walla County, with a population of 35,000, will have an income from the crops valued at $7,000,000. She raised 5,000,000 bushels of wheat and 1,500 car loads of fruits, with other cereals and vegetables thrown in for good measure. She has also extensive cattle and sheep ranches. From the above estimate it would allow $200 for every man, woman and child in the county. The Washington apple crop for this year, according to competent estimates, will sell for between $9,000,000 and $10,000,000. About half the crop will be exported. The crop for shipment this year will probably reach 5,000,000 boxes, each containing 50 pounds of fruit. State Commissioner Huntley reports that the state had within its borders at the beginning of this year, besides THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN * * * --- its wealth in apples trees, 949,299 plum and prune trees, 764,626 peach trees, 500,634 pear trees, 242,459 cherry trees, and 30,688 apricot trees.—Leavenworth Echo. The Wallula Gateway publishes an interesting story of prosperity on the grain farms in that section of Walla Walla county. It gives a list of seven prominent farmers who have secured enough wealth from the land to retire from active work. Three of those wheat growers own one-half section each, two have three-quarter sections, one has a section, and one rich man possesses six quarter sections of land. Of the number, one man began ten years ago as a laborer, receiving $1 per day, and will retire this winter with more than $15,000 taken from the farm this year. While the stringency in the money market is causing some embarrassment here because of the inability of the farmers to realize on their crop under existing conditions, still the Odessa country was never in so prosperous a state as now. With a wheat crop conservatively estimated at 1,500,000 bushels, of which over 1,100,000 bushels has already been delivered here, and basing the price received at 70 cents per bushel, the farmers of the Odessa country will receive from their wheat crop alone $1,050,000.—Odessa Record. The church lot at Spokane Nas been sold at a good round price and the building will be moved to another lot which has been purchased and that can be done out of the proceeds of the sale and still leave some money in the treasury, thus leaving the church in splendid financial condition. The work at Roslyn has not amounted to much for a num- ber of years, but a pastor has just been sent to that point and it is hoped that the work at that point will soon be under good headway again. The church at Everett is in a thriving condition and growing rapidly. Rey. Cate is doing good work there. aK REALM OF RELIGION. The published intention of the directors of the Young Men’s Christian Association in this city to put a-set of billiard tables in the association hall for the amusement of the members and visitors does not meet the ap- proval of the preachers of the city, and espe- cially the Methodist preachers, and they have expressed themselves in no uncertain lan- guage on the subject. We see no particular harm in putting pool tables in the building for the amusement of the members, if the game will be played solely for reerea- tion and amusement. Because pool and bil- liard tables are put in saloons and played for gain is no reason why they should not be used by Christian young men, To play a game of billiards is no more harm from our view- point than to play a game of football, base- ball, golf or any other game for recreation or amusement, as most of the young folk of Christian inclination do without hesita- tion. The preachers of the city are making life a burden to Kenneth Mackintosh, prosecut- ing attorney of King county, in their en- deavor to have him prosecute the proprietors of theatres for operating on Sundays. We are of the opinion that this is pushing a good thing beyond the limit, as theatres have just as much right to run on Sun- days as churches. There are thousands of persons who a hundred times over prefer to go to a theatre than to a church, and since they can only go there and listen to singing and speaking, What’s the difference if it be “*Goo-Goo Eyes’? or ‘Jesus, Lover of My Soul?’’ To close up drink resorts that crazes the mind of the imbiber‘is right, reasonable THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN and just, but to close up theatres in order | to force persons to go to churches is bigotry | pure and simple. lee ee ee GOLD DUST. Richard MeGhee, The church at Seattle is likewise prosperous. A new parsonage has recently been completed and other improvements have been pushed to completion. The church lot at Spokane Has been sold at a good round price and the building will be moved to another lot whieh has been purchased and that can be done out of the proceeds of the sale and still leave some money in the treasury, thus leaving the church in splendid financial condition. The work at Roslyn has not amounted to much for a num- ber of years, but a pastor has just been sent to that point and it is hoped that the work at that point will soon be under good headway again. The church at Everett is in a thriving condition and growing rapidly. Rey. Cate is doing good work there. A REALM OF RELIGION. We see no particular harm in putting pool tables in the building for the amusement of the members, if the game will be played solely for recrea- tion and amusement. Because pool and bil- tiard tables are put in saloons and played for gain is no reason why they should not be used by Christian young men, To play a game of billiards is no more harm from our view- point than to play a game of football, hase- ball, golf or any other game for recreation or amusement, as most of the young folk of Christian inclination do without hesita- tion. The preachers of the city are making life a burden to Kenneth Mackintosh, prosecut- ing attorney of King county, in their en- deavor to have bim prosecute the proprietors of theatres for operating on Sundays. We are of the opinion that this is pushing a good thing beyond the limit, as theatres have just as much right to mim on Sun- days as churches. There are thousands of persons who a hundred times over prefer to go toa theatre than to a church, and since they can only go there and listen to singing and speaking, what’s the difference if it be “Goo-Goo Eyes** or ‘Jesus, Lover of My Soul?" To close up drink resorts that crazes the mind of the imbiber is right, reasonable THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN and just, but to close up theatres in order to force persons to go to churches is bigotry pure and simple.
