Religion in the public schools is still the vexed question of the United States, and it seems no nearer a solution than when its agitation was first begun. We know that ours is nation of wonderful mixtures and it is safe to say that, though we are an English speaking race, yet a majority of the citizens of the United States have other besides English blood in their veins and of course may be termed foreigners. Many of these do not believe in the religion, on which this nation was founded, and hence object to it being taught to their children. It may be radical, but we believe that this question should be settled according to the customs of our country and if there are those who believe to the contrary and do not desire to have their children educated according to our customs they should either find an asylum in some other country or bow to the will of the majority as do those who believe and associate with different political parties.
There are those in Seattle that advocate the abandoning of all the indictments voted by the grand jury on the part of the prosecuting attorney and firstly because it is costing considerable money to prosecute the cases and secondly because it is giving Seattle a black eye. To our mind neither of the causes advanced for the dropping of the indictments should be considered. The grand jury believed a crime had been committed and it therefore indicted the persons who in their minds committed the crime, and it is a duty that the prosecuting attorney owes to the community, to prosecute each case though everyone arraigned be found not guilty. This dropping of a case after it has been instituted has been done so often that the man with either the money or the pull though indicted or informed against always manages to never go to trial.
A Los Angeles preacher advances the idea that, it is better to spend your money going to a Sunday base ball game than to give it up for foreign missionary purposes. Yes it is certainly a much better way of keeping all of the money at home. However, we have always had a serious doubt as to the advisability of sending millions of dollars to foreign misssonary fields, as those persons have a religion and a faith to them just as enlightening as ours. With Japan forging to the front as she has for the past half century and still serving the same religious doctrines that she has

for centuries, we do not see how our form of religion will do any more for her improvement than has been done. Judging from the lynchings in the United States it would be better for us as a nation if we had the religion of the heathen instead of the kind we have.
Having had a bushel of fun out of the late Gill recall election some of the citizens accostoumed to election excitments, and the next regular election being nearly a year off, have gotten busy and a recall has been instituted against Councilmen Max Wardall, president of the council, E L. Blaine, chairman of the finance committee, and J Y. C. Kellogg, the gentleman, who lead the fight for the Gill recall. This recall business is a creation of the people themselves and they have a right to use it as often as they will or may.
The president has been commended by the Outlook of New York for not pardoning Morse and Walsh, a couple of bank wreckers. We, however, seem to have gotten the impression from somebody somewhere down the line, that the United States government recognized the parol system as being a greater cure for the criminally inclined than the prison cells, and if that be true, why not parol even those miserable bank wreckers, for while the light holds out to burn the vilest sinner may return.
It is rather remarkable how willing the owners of automobiles permit the members of the Press Club to use them two or three days each month without pay. The question is, who is doing the grafting, the owners of the machines or the Press Club. The public is generally grafted for every entertainment the Press Club pulls off and it would seem that it is high time the members of the Press Club show their manhood by paying for what they get the same as any one else.
Justice to the Negro depends on through whose eyes it is seen. If through the eye of the humanitrian of the North, leave him to work out his own destiny, and, if he is successful give the man the credit; if from a Southern man's standpoint, it is kill the damn nigger, whether guilty or innocent. In fact he is always guilty of everything he is accused of whether at the place or a hundred miles therefrom, if the white man of the South sits in judgment on him.
That poilceman, who grabbed a halterstrap of a horse that was running away without a bridle on, has more nerve than he has sense. One could not conceive of a more fool hardy thing for a human being to bo than to grab hold of halter strap fastened around a horses neck and it running away, and while the officer is to be congratulated for stopping the horse yet, he is to be criticised for jeopardizing his own life to save a $25 cart.

reported that those alleged christians are having a hard time keeping the natives from murdering them. If they would quit stealing from the natives there would be less tendency on the part of the natives to do them violence.
There is still talk of a safe and sane Fourth of July, but in view of the fact tons of fire works will be sold in the most, if not all of the larger cities of the country, we are curious to know, how it will be possible to have a sane Fourth of July in Seattle or any where else that "young America " is given spending change for the day.
It is most remarkable that in this day and generation there should still be a strife between the various religious denominations, and the one seeking to tear down and totally discredit the other, but this very thing is being done to such an extent that sooner or later the average person will take darn little stock in any of them.
Some years ago horse racing was laid to rest and it was thought at the time that it would never come back, but within the past few months it shows signs of returning life, and its advocates in the New York legislature have actually had the audacity to get busy on the repeal of the horse racing law in the state of New York.
Bursting the trusts comes high for Uncle Sam as it cost him quite a million dollars to burst the trusts that he declares he has bursted, but which are doing business at the old stand in the same old way as they did before they were bursted. Are we throwing good money away after bad money in trying to burst the trusts?
George Primrose, the king of the minstrel ring, has decided to quit the game for all time to come. He says he has plenty of money and being fifty-seven years of age, he proposes to spend the balance of his life in quiet. Wonder if that is one of George's next season jokes? If so, it sounds good.
Persons who go across the "big pond" in the summer time for an outing do not expect to find the weather any more balmy than they do in the United States, but they go for a change of conditions, which is a greater rest than the scenery of the most scenic spot in the United States.
Madero has held down the presidential chair of Mexico for two whole weeks and neither a riot nor a scandal has been reported as having been pulled off in the republic. Evidently the natives got tired out with the long turn Diaz gave them and they are resting for a while.
So little and unexciting a thing as the wreck of a a flying machine and the killing of its occupants should cause no unusual excitement and yet because one was burned in mid air over in France the Associated Press troubled itself with a news item of it.
"World's Cotton Crop Short" is a P. I. head line. What is short, the fibre or the number of pounds raised? The cotton raisers would hardly understand what you want to say from your words.
Medical science is discovering more things to which the human body is more or less a victim to than could be figured by an expert mathematician in a life time. If the human body is subject to all the diseases that science declares constantly lay in wait for it, and if that has been true for ages, the wonder is that enough human beings are left to be gobbeled up by Raw-Hibe-Bloody- Bones.
The hammer that has been doing Seattle so much harm in the past few months is to be burned tomorrow evening and appropriate ceremonies are to be held over the funeral pile. Let us hope that not even the memory of that dirty little devil will be left unburned.
Are you for Taft? Like Banquo's ghost still bobs up serenely before the immortal Teddy and he does not seem able to dodge it, go where he will or may. Using the vulgar vernacular of the street, Theodore Roosevet as to supporting Taft, is in a hell of a fix.
Judge Gay having soundly spanked both the P. I. and the Times for fighting in the back yard, he now commands them to go and be good and they have promised to do so. Now if they will only keep their word Seattle will be greatly benefited.
If the Republican party will follow along the trail that William Howard Taft is blazing out for it there will be no more hope of the Democratic party winning the presidential election next year than for a snow ball to fly through hades. That was a bitter Root that President Taft had to devour in the United States senate, but he got through with the job in fine shape and now reciprocity is trotting on towards its destination in fine shape.
In dismissing the libel suits of the P, I. and the Times against each other, it seems to us that Judge Gay has robbed the sensation mongers of the community of some very sweet morsels of gossip.
What will President and Mrs. William Howard Taft do with the tons of silver they were the recipients of at their silver ding day is the question that is perplexing all concerned.
House renting business is said to have picked up within the past month and with the first signs of returning life the prices of rents start to going up with renewed vigor. If some of the heat of the East and Middle West could be distributed over the Puget Sound country the citizens of all sections would enjoy life to a much greater extent.
Dugdale's Giants have been doing some clever work for the past ten days, and if they keep up their lick they may come out next to the bottom in the penant contest.
Unless it be the see more shirt waists it is barely possible that no form of dress ever originated for women is so famous for beautiful scenery as the hobble skirt.
That Love affair in Baker Oregan has developed into a very expensive one and before it is over it begins to look as if Love will have to take to the woods.
Mr. and Mrs. Suicide of Seattle seem determined to keep in the lime light and are therefore going at themselves with a vengeance.
THE SEATTLE REPUBLICAN
PERSONS TALKED ABOUT
HON. JOHN LOCKWOOD WILSON attended Dr. Mattews church services last Sunday evening and on Monday he seriously complained of indisposition and on telling the same to his friends, who had heard him previously say he had attended the above services, he was asked: "Do you not think that your indisposition is due, to the fact that you attended Dr. Matthews's church last night " The senator refused to answer.
SOLON T. WILLIAMS, a well known Seattle attorney, was called as a wittness in a case one day this week, which was being tried in the superior court, and while he was compelled to obey the orders of the court, yet he felt in it was darn poor pay for his time. Even lawyers have to frequently take a dose of the same kind of medicne they administer to buishess men.
D. H. JARVIS committed suicide a few days ago and since it happened his friends have been trying to figure out the real cause, but evediently Mr. Jarvis considered that point well before he committed the rash act and he covered his tracks so well that the real facts will perhaps never come to light.
J. FRED BRAID, president of the Press Culb of Seattle, says he has had all the honor in that respect that he wants and as soon as his term expires he will ask someone else to relieve him. Guess Fred did not altogether like the idea of having to dine with a Chink.
SAMUEL HILL says he will not be a gubernatorial candidate as against Gov. Hay, but he will support some body else. It is reported that Hay says he is not bothered as to what Mr. Hill does in the way of supporting a gubernatorial candidate.
J. B. CATRON, a prominent Walla Walla statesman and Democratic war horse, died at his home in Walla Walla last Monday. He was frequently mentioned for nominations of important state offices, but never got so far as to receive any.
R. A. HUTCHINSON, state senator from Spokane, is in the city on business. He announces he is out of politics and will doubtless move to Seattle.
THE COUNTRY PRESS
In commenting on the sugar trust investigation now in progress the Everett Herald says: "It was not so long ago that the sugar beat was welcomed to this country as a great boon that would not only make sugar cheaper, but would at the same time make worthless land fabulously valuable The land has been made valuable alright, but sugar, so far as the consumers are concerned, is higher now than it was before the beet sugar was introduced, and that too with vast quantities of beet sugar being producod. The men controlling the beet sugar output are not in a trust with the cane sugar producers, but they are in a trust with themselves, and do not seek to lower the price of the sugar of their opponents." Thus it seems the middle men in the United States is ever in the hands of either one set of thieves or another.
"A young man in a neighboring town advertised for a wife, it is said, under an assumed name, and his sister answered
the advertisement, also in an assumed name. Then photographs were exchanged and now the young man thinks there is no balm in advertisements, and the old people think it is pretty hard to have two fools in one family.—Auburn Republican. Instead of their being no balm in advertising the above shows that advertising will not only bring business, but it will also bring fools back to their senses. Great is advertising.
Hugh C. Todd, the late leader of the democratic minority in the state legislature has moved to Seattle. Mr. Todd is an avowed candidate for the democratic nomination for governor. He has been elected twice to the etate legislature from Whitman county.—Olympia Chronicle. Despite the fact that Todd has actually taken up his residence in Seattle things move on just the same as if the brilliant meteoric misfit was not here and we predict that Todd has been heard from for the last time.
We hate to miss the coronation of King George of England, but the mustard must be cut and the lawn must be mowed. Lincoln County Times. Evidently the country press does not attach much importance to the late coronation exercises and we are of the opinion it is quite on the right track. If Americans would have put the money they spent in attending that farce comedy into legitimate commercial channels there would be less financial stringency all over the country than is now reported.
"We hate to miss the coronation, but our potatoes must be hoed," says the Monroe Monitor-Transcript. If you hoed them then you crowned a greater king than did the royalty of England. Last week potatoes sold in Seattle for $75 per ton, and most any acre of land on Puget Sound will raise two tons of potatoes, which at that price, would mean $150 per acre per year, and a few acres of potatoes would be worth more than the whole darn royal family.
Last Sunday, according to the Auburn Republican, Thomas Christopher, the father of the little town of that name, and one of the prominent pioneers of the White River valley, celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday. He is still hale and hearty and is the owner of one of the most up to date ranch properties in the valley. From his present activity it looks as though he will celebrate some twenty-five more.
In Washington, Jim Hill mustard isn't worth much, but in New York Jim Hill mustard six hunderd million dollars. Davenport Tribune. For down right cleverness, by jove, the above excerpt takes the cake. However, while Jim Hill mustard does not seem to be worth much in Washington, Sam Hill mustard, according to his prophesies, will cost Gov. Hay his re-election.
No doubt this hot weather makes trust officials wonder whether the government would equip their cells with electric fans in case of a jail sentence.—Des Moines Register and Leader.
A lot of trusts are hoping that "the light of reason" by which good and bad trusts are to be distinguished will be a one-candle-power affair instead iof a searchlight.—Philadelphia Inguirer.
When asked about the Supreme Court decision, discretion made Mr. Duke, president of the American Tobacco Company, say he had "nothing to say"; but he must have felt like a man in a barber chair with a mouth full of lather, who sees the bootblack trying to give another customer his new Panama hat.—Nashville Southern Lumberman.
