POLITICAL POT-PIE
POLITICAL POT-PIE
Single Copies, 10 Cents.
The past week brought forth a number of announcements of a state political nature, and it is expected that with the continuation of good warm weather others will be "sweated" out. In several localities it is rumored that the next two weeks will see quite a change in the general tone of the political horizon as pertains to the gubernatorial nomination. This of course is the chief office sought after and rumors have it, that between now and the time for making good for the primary law requirements there are likely to be more candidates than one can count on ones fingers and toes. However, it is also acknowledged that some are merely playing for a little cheap advertising and that before the fight becomes real warm, they will have somthered their desires and aspirations so that nothing will be heard from themin the real battle. That Governor Hay will not be one of these goes without saying. While there seems to be ground to believe that the governor will not have the support of the two big Republican dailies of the westside for re-election, he possesses some of the real coin that can help him to a certain extent, and besides, if all reports are to be believed, he is depending upon the country press, having purchased outright several newspapers in Eastern Washington, and said to be negotiating for others in this section. Look at it from any angle you desire, Governor Hay is a fighter and from all appearances will make his presence known, although we don't believe he can be elected. But his money will have some effect and it ought to make times good in certain sections.
That the Governor will have some opposition in the strongholds which he hoped to have undivided is almost a certainty. Being a farmer and a country town merchant, the governor naturally expected to have this vote solidly, but if reports count for anything then there are at least two candidates who will split this strength of Governor Hay. While he has made no public announcement of his candidacy, still it is generally conceded by his friends, that Lee A. Johnson, the Sunnyside banker and well known and highly popular resident of the eastside, will soon make known his intention to be in the race for governor.
Mr. Johnson stands well with all classes, and particularly the farmers and the "drys" of the state. He served two terms in the state legislature and was defeated three years ago by Miles Poindexter for the congressional nomination from the third district. He has been strongly urged by his friends to come out for the gubernatorial nomination, but owing to pressing business affairs

and absence from the state, has declined to announce his determination up to this time. That he looks with fond eyes upon the office is acknowledged, and being a fighter, he is soon likely to enter tae combat for all he is worth.
Another person who will take strength from Governor Hay is no less than W. H. Kaufman, assessor of Whatcom county, a farmer and quite prominent in Grange affairs. Kaufman has just announced his candidacy for governor, and tells what he stands for, his platform being frankly and unequivically for single tax and direct legislation. Taboo these two ideas as we may, they must be fought out, and the people won't be contented until they have been given a trial. Kaufman has laid hold upon two excellent ideas and he will gain friends and supporters among the farmers and common people by reason thereof. He pledges himself, if elected, to bring about civil service reform in the state offices, to banish lobbies from the capitol, to base his appointments altogether upon efficiency and not at all on politics, and in sofar as he is able to place the burden of taxation on franchises and on natural resources which are held out use. Another clause of his platform, and one adopted by the state grange, is that of binding legislative candidates to one pledge only, namely that of voting to submit to popular vote and constitutional amendment petitioned for by 15,000 citizens of the state. By this means, he says, amendments providing for single or for county option in the form of tax to be adopted, and for all other reform measures favored by the progressive element, can be put up to a test vote before the people themselves to be adpoted as the mass of the voters, and not as the legislators, shall dictate.
Within the next week or two Otto A. Case, at present county auditor of King county, will make announcement of his candidacy for governor, and will also make a statement as to his platform. In a general way Mr. Case has given out an idea to his friends of what he intends to stand for. He is opposed to anything that has even the earmarks of a political machine, such as is being built up in the state by commissions and appointments; is also opposed to the condition of affairs existing in the state legislature whereby one house is arrayed against another, and needed legislation is side tracked.
Mr. Case believes in extending state aid to rural schools such as is enjoyed by those of the largest cities; believes in the development of logged-off-lands in Western Washington and the irrigation of arrid lands in Eastern Washington; these together with

The political element in King County are making strenuous efforts just now to find a man around whom all of the elements can rally and thereby eliminate all of the other gubernatorial candidates from King county; and likewise a man that is able to command considerable strength outside of the county, to present the name to the Republicans of the state for their endorsement at the primary election next year. After months of casting about for such a man, the name of William Pitt Trimble seems to be the most available and his candidacy is receiving much consideration just now by many of the leading politicions and business men as a successor to Governor Hay. It is not definitely known that he would accept the endorsement of his friends and permit the use of his name, but those looking after the situation feel that he will, and are therefore moving the proposition slowly but surely to the front. It is currently reported that Mr. Trimble, should he be a candidate, would have the support of the Post-Intelligencer in Seattle and perhaps the Times and he would in all human probability have the support of the Review of Spokane. Once on a time Mr. Trimble sought the Republican nomination for mayor of Seattle, but at the time the Post-Intelligencer was tied up to another candidate and of course the Times supported him, and perfectly natural he went down to defeat. In the coming gubernatorial contest the Post-Intelligencer is said to be free to act as its owner sees fit, and if it should support Trimble there would be nothing to it. It is the consensus of opinion that Howard D. Taylor, George U. Piper and perhaps the other would-be King county gubernatorial aspirants can be shown that they can do nothing but defeat Trimble and nominate Hay. The name of no one that has been mentioned in connection with the gubernatorial nomination meets with so much general public favor as that of Trimble, and The Seattle Republican believes that if his candidacy is properly managed he would register a sweeping victory at the primaay polls next year. Efficiency and economy in the public service will be two of the watchwords, if Mr. Case is elected, because these are what the taxpayers and people demand. John P. Kiggins, mayor of Vancouver, is another man who has a gubernatorial bee and he is said to be developing it just as rapidly as possible. has a clean record and that is also something. Those who know him say that he will make a good governor, and he hopes to get Southwest Washington solidly and this section is known to be something of a fighter, so that Kiggin's candidacy may develop into something more than mere buzz.—Olympia Independent.
PERSONS TALKED ABOUT
EUGENE LORTON, editor of the Spokesman of Vancouver, Washington, was a Seattle visitor last Monday. Mr. Lawton it will be remembered begun publishing the Spokesman a few months ago and already he is assured of success in its publication. He is simply a wonder in the publication business and has never failed at any such undertaking.
EDITOR BLETHEN says the "red cross" published in the Times has caused thousands to inquire the reason therefor, and he promises soone or later to explain. It may perhaps mean the red cross that Prosecuting Attorney Murphy will mail Col. Blethen tc when he puts him on trial for aiding and abetting official criminals.
A. A. SMITH, secretary of the Washington State Press Association is sending out notices to the craft of the state concerning the next meeting, which will be held in Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor country. That section of the state is preparing to do the press gang as it has never before had it done to them, and therefore the secretary is hoping that the number will be larger by odds than ever before in the history of the Association.
J. T. RONALD, who was the presiding judge in the last Wappenstein trial, is getting a number of of flatering notices by the press of the state on that part of his charge which said, "truth is truth no matter from what source it eminates." Truth is so seldom heard in court trials that it sounds good when a judge does hear it.
ALVIN HEMRICH says this recall buisness makes him tired and if Seattle hopes to get anywhere, any ways soon she had better cut it out. Dilling and none of the councilmen have done anything to warrant a recall talk and Seattle has had enough cheap notoriety for the present year.
WILL H. MORRIS, the noted criminal lawyer of the Northwest, is making the fight of his life in the defense of Wappenstein and recently said, "the reason the jury convicted Mr. Wappenstein was due to the fact that it was so near the celebrating of the Fourth of July that the jurymen agreed to a verdict rather than miss those obsequies." That is patriotism in bunches, Big Bill, but you doubtknow what you are talking about.

The above picture is a bird's eye view of the business center of Seattle. The picture was taken from the Washington Hotel and looks southeast which shows the most of the sky scrapers that Seattle boasts of. These sky scrapers and other buildings have all been gayly decorated and are now ready to welcome visitors to Seattle to witness and partake of the good will the Golden Potlatch promises. Those having charge of the Potlatch have arranged to make it pleasant for all vititors and the hotels promise to be even more liberal in their charges than they are in their regular business routine. It is the intention of all Seattle to give the visitors to the city a royal good time and if $100,000 will do that it will be done. Elaborate programs have been arranged for each day and the visitor would do well to supply himself with a daily guide and then follow its direction. The Potlatch ceremonies will be opened next Monday and will continue on the balance of the week. This Golden Potlatch that Seattle has decided as one of her permanent festival days had its origin in the landing of the good ship Portland some years ago with the first load of gold from Alaska. Since that time Alaska has sent an almost constant stream of gold to Seattle and to commerate that commercial enterprise, which Seattle has been the recipient of without her own efforts, the Golden Potlatch festivities have been inaugurated. The Portland arrived in Seattle the morning of the 18th of July, 1897.
2 W. H. CLARK recently returned from California where he has been sojourning on a ranche, which he yicked up for speculation, and is of the opinion that every city in California is equal as quite as Seattle, if not more sa, and to my mind it is all due to the constant agitation that is being kept up by the tin horn politicians wanting to get for themselves.
G. W. H. Davis, secretary of the Brewing Association of the state, says, "I am utterly surprised at Keniwick and Pasco going wet. Both of those places went wet of tneir own accord and insipite of the strenuos fight the anti-salloon leaguers made to have it go dry. It looks to me as if there is a gradual returning to common every day horse sense on the part of the voters of the state and especially in eastern Washington and a complete shaking of one Boyd. P. Doty.
JOHN L. WILSON, former United States senator from Washington, spoke to the Waddah Club a fews evenings ago and the members thereof declare he made the best speech they had ever heard him make, and that was saying a good deal. They are already shouting for him for U. S. Senator, but the senator says, "never again for me Mary Ann."
LEE A. JOHNSON was in seattle not long since and it is currently reported that he will not only be a candidate for governor but will oppose the re-ection of Wessley L. Jones to the senate.
DAVID MCKENZIE, the "recreant" King county commissioner, is making it interesting for the grafters, but a majority of the commission is against him and the big dailies are too much mixed up in the political game to give him any moral support. Now keep up your lick Davy and you will make it interesting for the gang sooner or later in spite of your handicaps.
But Pays Well
About the most discipable person, and at the same time the most dangerous to society. is the official who, sworn to maintain and enforce law, stands in with the vicious element and allows vice and infamy to go on unchecked. — Sunnyside Sun.
Don't Be A Pessimist
There are few things in life of which we can really be certain. We know that in the natural order of things we will be called upon to face labor, sickness, sorrow, anxiety, disappointment, taxes, and finally death. These may be reckoned as certainties, while health, happiness and luxury are are among the uncertainties.
Apparently the things which we seek with the greatest effort are the most often denied us. But hope is an undying element of our makeup, and combined with energy, ever keeps us in the van of endeavor, so that after all much is done for the betterment of our kind, whether we reap a direct reward or not.—Wilber Register.

bow-wows, simply because the railroads were not to have their own way about everytning they wanted. Now his two systems, the Great Northern and Burlington, are issuing bonds as fast as the engravers can turn them out, and they are being sold. Mr. Hill feels better. The best market for these bonds is in Europe, which helps while it lasts. Lincoln County Times.
Jim Hill Saw
While we are not prone to over enthusiasm, yet we believe that everything justifies us in looking forward to unusl prosperity throughout the Big Bend this fall. We refer especially to the grain yield which is growing under excellent conditions. Had the farmer been given control of the weather man's actions, the sunshine, rain and tempreature would not have varied but a fraction from that which has been given us. With the bright prospects before us, we feel that the result will fulfill our expectations.—Davenport Tribune.
Looks On Bright Side
It's been three or four months since Seattle had an election. Hence a nnumber of political foentors are trying to organize another recall election. Mayor Dlliing, who rode in on the last upheaval, and three councilmen, seem to have lost their standing. But the present agitation is not looked on with favor. Only last Saturday the "hammer" was burned amidst public ceremony, to show to the world that Seattle is no longer menaced by the knocker. The libel suits involving its two leading newspapers have been dismissed by the court, so that all in all, the future looks bright.—Kent Advertiser.

Watching The Farmers
For the next ninety days the eyes of the business world will be upon the farmer. Larger even than politics or the discussions in congress, is the problem of the amount, and the quality of the crops, which the farmer will grow during the year. Markets will rise and fall on reports of rainfall, or of untimely frosts in the corn and wheat belts. -Colfax Commoner.
Want More Judge Ronalds
No matter from what source it emanates, the truth is the truth. This declaration was made by Judge Ronald in his instructions to the second Wappenstein jury. The jury is alledged to have taken another horn of the dilemma and decided that a lie was a lie and that the evidence of the defense was rather mixed. With a few exhibitions of this kind of justice, which are surely needed in spots, it may occur to more transgressors of decency that the day of reckoning might be among the capital prizes in the first darwing.—Cle Elum Echo.
Chicago is a Great City
It must be consoling to Saettle to have the news spread broadcast over the country that it ranks along with Ghicago in being the worst American receiving point of white slave traffic in the United States. Such a statement was made at the conference of societies concerned with the aiding of young women, held in Christiana, Switzerland recently. Seattle now needs to turn its attention to purging itself of this evil.—Olympia Independent.

THE GRAND JURY
The present Grand Jury appears to be causing the minds of some people, a grat deal of worry and trouble. It is said that one man, who is keeping out of the State, made the declaration that if he went before the grand jury, and told the truth, it would indite several of his friends on the commission of felony. The Grand Jurors and detectives knew of his relations to gamblers macques and pimps and if he testifies falsely, the Grand Jury would indite him for perjury, which does not appeal to him. If witnesses go upon the stand, in the defense of parties indited for running gambling houses, dance halls and houses of prostitution, and testify raisely, the Grand Jury summon the witnesses and indite them for perjury and send them to the penitentiary. If jurors are tampered with and are induced to hang the jury, the Grand Jury will investigate the matter and may indite them for perjury and may find facts enough to have them committed for contempt of court.
Of course, there are men in the community who would be glad to get rid of Foreman Corliss and his Grand Jury. They would be willing to have another Grand Jury called and take their chances of getting men whom they could approach and control. The present Grand Jury has not leaked. The foreman has not been interviewed. They realize the fact that they are part of the Court and that it is their duty to keep their secrets as intended by law. Heretofore everything that was done and said in the Grand Jury room appeared in the newspapers; but the present Grand

Jury has been warned and watched and each and every man appears to know and perform his duties. Of course it is embarrassing to men who desire to bribe and fix jurors; it is embarrassing to men who desire to suborn witnesses, but to the man who desires the punishment of criminals, and is law abiding, the Grand Jury has no terrors. It has been said in the past that
With good opinion of the law." and in the present case, for some reason and for some interests there has been a great hue and cry against the Grand Jury and Foreman Corliss, but when sifted to the bottom it will be found that the parties making the out cry are deeply interested. Wh should the Grand Jury be discharged? Has it not made good? Have not the ballot box stuffer, the men who made false registration, the repeaters, the bribe takers all been convicted and their terms fixed in the penitentiary? The fact is, Foreman Corliss and his Grand Jury have made good; John Murphy and his deputies have made good: the conspirators against law and order have been captured, convicted and sentenced to the penitentiary. What more could have been done than has been done?

Another naval official has been refused accommodation in one of the leading hostelries of Seattle because he wore the uniform of the government, which has caused so much a commotion, that Mayor Dilling is planning to have an ordinance passed by the city council making it a misdemeanor to refuse men wearing the government uniform accommodation at places of amusement and entertainment. Is the mayor aware of the fact that the soldiers now at Fort Lawton are refused accommodation at most every place of entertainment and amusement in Seattle, and that too despite the fact they conduct themselves in the most respectable manner? If the mayor intends to see that all persons wearing the government uniform get fare treatment, when they go to the restaurants and other places of accommodation and amusement then such an ordinance as he proposes should be hailed with delight by all good citizens.
Russia and the United States have been compelled to pay the Japanese and Canadian governments heavy indemnities to quit killing the seals, which by all legal rights belong to Russia and Uncle Sam. Here is a true case of having to pay for what you already own, but when it is remembered that, Japan has already licked Russia and is spoiling for a fight with the United States, discretion is the better part of valor and both Russia and the United States must think they are getting off cheap.
Consternation prevails in London "sawciety" because one Mrs Emeline Grigsby has been able to break into Euglish society when other Americans, with thieving petigrees covering a hundred years, have beet turned down. Too bad! Too bad! But why object to Miss Grigsby as she seems to be as totally devoid of good morals as the average society woman.
Boquets are being thrown so thick and fast at Representative Humphrey that it looks as if he will be re-elected before election time comes round. Humphrey has been making himself useful as well as ornamental this year and all because King county gave him such a jar last year. It is rumored that Scott Calhoun is laying dead to give him an even worse jar than did Tom Revelle.
Castro, the Venezuelian disturber, who was banished from its native land, has secretly landed on his former dunghill and press dispatches are of the opinion that, he is seeking to raise another rebellion.
Hob La Follette, the political disturber in the United States senate for selfish purposes, has finally concluded that Taft will be nominated to succeed himself and that he will not have a peep in. He, however, declares the Democrats under the leadership of Champ Clarkjor Woodrow Wilson will win at the general election. Oh rats that's another case of sour grapes.
The weather may not be as hot in Seattle and the Puget Sound country in general as it is throughout the East, but there are days when business obligations press thick and fast upon you that you get just as hot under the collar as if you were in the East.
President Taft is evidently not stuck on the recall proposition and he therefore gives notice that he will veto that part of the proposed Arizona constitution. There are those in Seattle who ard willing to say Amen to the president.
It is reported that Mayor Dilling is to visit the dam site. It is further reported that the mayor will have to visit a dam site more than he has, if he hopes to succeed himself as mayor of Seattle.
Dugdale's giants are still making a most noble fight for the bottom of the basket and if it were not for those pesky foreigners up in Victoria, they would win out alright.
With four indictments hanging over his head it is plain to be seen why the editor of the Times is so deeply interested in the final adjournment of the Corliss grand jury.
With Mme Emma Eames married and Ethel Barrymore seeking a reconciliation with her husband, single blessedness to the stage woman is not being eagerly sought.
The Pringle Stock Company has been away from the Seattle theatre all this week, but this favorite organization will re-opon Sunday afternoon and they will be greeted by thousands of their friends next week. They will open with a play new to the patrons of the Seattle theatre, a beautiful story well told, "A Wife's Secret." In offering this play for Potlatch week the management has taken into consideration the number of strangers that will seek good, wholesome amusement during Carnival week and will offer their patrons something of a higher class. "A Wife's Secret" teaches a great moral that all should see and hear. and at the same time there is a vein of comedy that runs throughout the entire play that keeps the audience in good humor. Each act will be found thoroughly interesting and the climaxes are all of the gripping kind. "A Wife's Secret" will be found to be a play that will please everybody. And the Seattle theatre will be the proper place to take your visiting guests to have a good evening's entertainment.
