THE LAWYERS' POLITICAL MISTAKE
Washington's State Bar Association has made a sad mistake in singling out the dogma, if you please, of socialism and declaring, it must be headed off, and to drastic laws, which will curb its further growth. I fthe resolution of the Association should be followed up the that end the next legislature will be asked to pass some legislature would create a law commission whose duty it would be to pass on all proposed laws. Any move in that direction and the state of Washington will go Socialist ten to one, not that the voters would believe in doctrines of Socialism, but to give the lawyers, who represent rich clients and corporations, to understand, they are not running things, or at least, if they are running things they must do so as they have in the past by bribing the individual members of the legislature into not passing measures considered by their clients vicious. The grafter would be as much opposed to the passage of such a law as the preserver of human liberties because it would take from them a lucrative source of making money at the sittings of the various legislative sessions. The state of Washington, it will be remembered, was the banner Populist state in 1896, and for no other reason than because Andrew F. Burleigh, the representative of the railroads of the state, took the initiative at the 1896 Everett convention, by becoming more radical on the money question than did the state of Ohio, the home of William McKinley, who at the time was the leading presidential candidate for the Republican nomination on the "gold bug ticket." The people resented that move on the part of Mr. Burleigh by electing every state and county official from the Populist party, and while the platform advocated by Burleigh was finally adopted by Congress, yet Republicans to this day boast of having turned Burleigh down, not because they believed in Populism, but because they did not approve of the corporations running things. If now another move is made by the corporations such as has been suggested by the State Bar Association it will mean another overwhelming defeat for the Republican party and place the Socialist party in complete control of the various state and county offices. Unless we are sadly mistaken you are monkeying with the buzz saw.
LAURIER FIGHTING FOR RECIPROCITY.
Despite the fact that Congress has passed the reciprocity act and the same has been signed by the President, yet there is nothing certain of it ever becoming a law, as Premier Laurier has dissolved the Canadian parliament and a new election has been ordered, which will put the measure up to the voters for rejection or endorsement. Many of the Canadians are more or less jealous of the United States and especially the ones who favor nothing that does not eminate in London or is not endorsed by leaders of England, and England proper being more or less opposed to reciprocity it may meet defeat at the polls when the next general election is pulled off. It is argued by a great many of the leading thinkers of the United States that in reciprocity Canada has everything to gain and nothing to lose, while the citizens of the United States have little if anything to gain and much to lose, at least for some time to come, and it is very doubtful if the measure had been put to a direct vote of the people in the United States if it would have been endorsed.
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, FRIDAY, AUG. 4, 1911.
MURDERERS ARE ENCOURAGED.
Seattle's long list of undetected murderers, to say nothing of the list of convicted ones within the past year is simply astounding, and it shows how cheap human life is held in this section of the country. In talking to a man from British Columbia one day this week he declared, the records would bear him out, that Seattle and her immediate community have had more wilful murders within the past year than all Canada has had in her history. He then suggested that the principal reason for Seattle having so many bloody murders lies in the fact that they are not punished when they are convicted. There is more truth than poetry in the last sentence whether or not he was correct in his first proposition. A great many persons charged with murder either go scott free or draw a very short sentence in the state prison, and are not long confined before a petition is circulated for their pardon on the ground that they are dying of consumption or some other disease. Had the red handed scoundrel got his just deserts he would have died of the hempen rope disease and not by degrees, but by a sudden jerk. Murders are recklessly committed, owing to the fact that a majority of the citizens go round as walking arsenals, ready to shoot their fellow man on the slightest provocation, knowing full well that with a little money he will be able to hire the best legal talent the country boasts of, who will all but incriminate themselves to get their client free and thereby build up a reputation of being able to save the most flagrant murderers from the gallows. We do not believe very much in capital punishment, but capital punishment rigidly enforced certainly lessens the number of murders as may be seen in the British government.
HE KICKED A NEGRO
Owing to the heavy Negro vote it is probable that Texas has voted down the prohibition amendment by a majority of a couple of thousand. The one time when a Negro can exercise his right of suffrage in the South is when the liquor question comes up and then the liquor men see that he votes. Considering the large black vote that had to be contended with the result is encouraging to the temperance cause.—South Bend Journal.
It is remarkable what big liars some "truthful" people are. In the state of Taxes the Negro is as a whole disfranchised and is never permitted to exercise his right of franchise on any occasion. In every state in the South where the prohibition question has been an issue it was agreed by both sides that the Negro vote would not be accepted and that he would have to abide by whatever a majority of the white people decided. The editor of the South Bend Journal is considered one of the upright men of the state and one more or less friendly to the American Negro, and yet for selfish motives he saddles the blame of the failure of prohibition in Texas on a people that were given no voice or vote in the dispute. If the editor of the Journal had been on the stump campaigning for the Republican party in a presidential election he would have taken the exact opposite view of the Negro in Texas and argued that the Republican nominee should win because the Democrats had totally disfranchised the black man, but that would have been serving the other side of his selfish self. In the states of the South the black man can not even qualify to vote either for or against the liquor question or anything else in which the state is interested, and no one knows that better than the editor of the Journal. But another injustice has been done the black man in this connection. The statistics of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which the distinguished editor is a member, show that fully 90 per cent of the Negroes in the South favor and openly work for prohibition. The above onslaught on the Negro reminds us of the white fellow that got licked in a mining camp by a fellow miner and wanting vengeance on some one, and fearing to tackle a white man, hunted up a Chinaman and pounded his head into a jelly—he just had to lick somebody.

AN AGE OF GRAFTDOM.
So far as the United States government is concerned there is no doubt but that this is an age of graft, and every state, county and municipal government in the country seem to be badly troubled with the disease. Within the past week the federal prison at Leavenworth, Kansas, has been investigated and a majority of the officers employed have either resigned or been abruptly dismissed, and all because after a week's investigation on the part of secret service men, it has been discovered that a wholesale graft has been practiced among the officers, the one helping the other. According to press dispatches the new mayor of Portland, Oregon, has discovered that the police department of that city is reeking with graftdom, and after a short investigation on the part of the reform officials some fifty or more of the members of the police force have either been fired outright or allowed to resign on minor charges. As in the case of the places mentioned above so does the story come from all over, and the public official that does not practice graft seems to be the exception and by no means the rule. To convict grafters in this country under the circumstances would seem to be out of the question, and especially if the grafters will hang together.
WAS TARO A LIBERTINE?
If it is finally proven that Taro, the chauffeur, who was killed in his automobile last Saturday evening in Seattle, by an unknown man, was killed for having induced a young girl of a respectable family to go joy riding with him, there will be little or no sympathy wasted upon him. It is altogether too common for men to go out larking with fourteen and sixteen year old girls, and when a few of them get punished with the death penalty by the irate protectors of the girls there will be less of it done. Not long since we heard of a mother trying to scall a man seemingly sixty years of age, who had called at her home in the capacity of a canvasser and while there engaged a twelve year old girl in conversation and finally walked up to her and took liberties with her person. Had the woman been accustomed to using fire arms there perhaps would have been another dead man in the city. We have no sympathy or pity for the man ripe in years who will make advances on young girls, and we think the father, brother, or protector of a young girl, who has been persuaded by some man ripe in years to go out joy riding with him in an automobile, is perfectly justified in shooting the life out of the scoundrel wherever he finds him
If the weekly press of the state does not play the "devil" with the policy of the country this week it will not be because an opportunity is not offered, as the most of the editors and their wives are enjoying the annual State Press Association and each office is left in charge of the "devil."
Every Democratic paper in the state seems to be of the opinion that R. A. Ballinge's Fourth of July Aberdeen speech was the rottenest thing that has been gotten off in the state for a good many moons, which may be absolutely correct, but what strikes us about it is, why has none of the Republican papers seen it in the same light? What he said was his own idea and every man has a right to express himself on the questions bearing upon the policy of the country, and the other fellow may accept or reject them as he sees fit.
A banker in Davenport has offered the enormous sum of $2.50 as a prize for the best bunch of wheat left at the bank, and the farmers of the country are invited to compete for the prize. It occurs to us that that banker has grown rather reckless in this financial depression, for if he has to really give away so large a sum of money as that, he is likely to not only go broke himself, but cause general distress among his numerous depositors. A Chicago woman won a husband on a bet and now she wants to get rid of him because he seems to be no good. The judge ought to deny her a divorce, not because she has not a worthless pair of breeches in the shape of a husband, but as a lesson to other women that it is wrong to play at games of chance.

It is reported that the Progressive and the Democrats are together, which, if true, means the end of the Progressives. It will be remembered that the Democrats, Populists and Free Silver Republicans got together and it was only a few short months before they had all become Democrats. If therefore the Progressives in the United States' senate have made up their minds to affiliate with the Democrats on all national questions their political end is already in sight.
There is some excuse for medicine men, pharmacists and men of letters and science forming associations, but there is no excuse or reason in the world for real estate men forming state and national association, only for the purpose of making more certain the filching of the public. Real estate gambling which is so common to the United States at present, will eventually result in the country adopting the single tax plan or some other plan equally as objectional to the real estate gambler and the land grabber.
In giving up the magazine business to enter the ministry W. L. Wilhelm must have been thoroughly convinced that the latter pays better than the former, or at least the money with a yellow legged chicken as an accompanent, looks better.
One John W. McLean is of the private opinion publicly expressed that George F. Russell, postmaster of Seattle, is not only ignorant, but likewise a religious bigot. We do not know as there is very much in either of those allegations, but we do know that he is a "lucky dog," using the street vernacular.
Scott Calhoun, who has been corporation counsel of Seattle so long that you have to stop and think when he was elected, returned last Saturday from a week's outing on Mt. Raineer. The guides on the mountain use a great deal of tact in talking about the mountain lest they call it Mt. Raineer when they should have called it Mt. Tacoma, and when they are in doubt they avoid calling it anything. We met a little boy up in the mountain, who for a while acted as our guide. My wife asked him what was the name of the mountain. "I do not know," he quickly replied, and when pressed for an answer, he said, "I call it God, but I do not know what God named it."
It is rumored that Governor Hay has practically decided to appoint H. A. P. Myers a superior court judge of King county to fill the vacancy of Judge Prigmore. Mr. Myers came from the same section of the state as Gov. Hay and for a number of years was his personal attorney. His brother is state senator from Davenport and is very close to the Hay administration, and it was a foregone conclusion from the very start that the appointment was Myers' if he desired, and it is reported that he desires it.
J. H. GRAY
The above is the picture of L. H. Gray, who recently sold his interest in the L. H. Gray Steamship Company and thought he would rest from business cares for a while, but who soon found rest more wearing than work, and now is engaged in promoting an electric line between Bremerton and the Grays Harbor country. He is spending considerable time this week in the Grays Harbor country perfecting his plans. "I feel absolutely certain," said he, "that our project will be a success, and within a few months more, dirt will be flying in preparation of the road bed. The success of the undertaking means quick connection with Seattle, Aberdeen, and all of the Gray's Harbor country and that will mean much for Seattle in the way of commercial business. A boat line will be put on the Sound, which will make connections with the trains, and passengers leaving for that section of the state will be delayed a very short period in reaching the electric line." Mr. Gray is a tireless worker in whatever he undertakes, and the public may be assured even at this early date that the time is not far distant when Kitsap, Mason and Lewis and Chehalis counties will be in close touch with Seattle and make it possible for the jobbers of Seattle to put their commercial commodities into the Gray's Harbor country many hours ahead of any competitor. There are other Seattle capitalists interested in the project, but he seems to be the most active. It is hoped that when he returns from his present trip of prospecting that he will have even more definite ideas than he is now willing to discuss, to give to the public. He is one of the most public spirited men in Seattle and gives everything that is for the public weal a good hard boost.

As a rule the majority of men will pass a policeman in a city without speaking to him in any manner, shape or form; in other words they avoid him, seemingly, as they would a rattle snake. Probably it is the uniform he wears; mayhap it is the fear of taking a ride to headquarters, or

it may be the general man detests a policeman; that's all. Be this as it may, observe for yourself at your leisure moments, and you will admit the assertion to be true. Why is it thus? I am not prepared to say. But I will venture an opinion on the cause, and that opinion is simply this: The majority of men are afraid to speak to a policeman in a city, for they know in nine cases out of ten, should they address a civil, polite and cheery "Good morning,"

Not so long ago, I read an article in a popular magazine, wherein the writer thereof declared "the individual should always speak kindly to a policeman in our large cities, as the average policeman believes each man, woman and child, shuns him because he was only a policeman." When I had finished this, I

made up my mind, then and there, that I would speak a kindly word of cheer to the first policeman I met. So when I spied one standing idly on a corner of the street in which I lived, twirling his tassel decorated club, yet looking, as I imagined, a bit lonely, a poor orphan, alone in this cruel world who not a soul cared for, and who no one would utter a kind word to, I made my way up to him and said:
"Hello, Officer! How are you?"
---
FRIDAY, Aug. 4, 1911 In a gutteral, gruff, rasping and severe tone of voice, he replied:
"Say, I've seen you passing my beat several times. I want to know your name and address, along with your line of business. There has been a great many robberies lately, so don't try to hand me any 'bull,' by trying to break in on a conversation with me, for there ain't going to be any. See? I've seen you looking in store windows at different times, too, and just the other night saw you go along with a curious looking package."
The "curious" looking package in question, I may say, contained three bottles of "It's the Water." I told him my name, address, and so on, as he requested, and when he finished his "cross-examination" of me, I sadly meandered towards my room in the lodging-house, thinking dark, bitter thoughts. What those thoughts were—well, I shall leave you to guess, for I do not believe in telling "tales out of school," though really, I should enjoy telling you frankly and truly what they consisted of.
Again, I would enjoy, between you, me and the gate-post, a few moments' conversation with the writer who wrote the article in the popular magazine which I read, wherein he asserted, "the individual should always speak kindly to a policeman in our large cities, as the average policeman believes each man, woman and child, shuns him because he is only a policeman." Indeed, I should.
As I have mentioned heretofore in this article, the majority of men pass a policeman without speaking to him in any manner, shape or form, and, great fish-hooks! can you blame them? After my experience in attempting to speak kindly to "one of the finest," I have come to the conclusion that any man or men who would ever glance at a policeman are fit candidates for the insane asyl——. old on, Quaker. I digress. Pardon me. I am not, however, going to join the said majority, even though my first experience in attempting to speak a kind word to a "cop," was not what you might term a "howling success," but I intend to keep on saying: "Hello, Officer! How are you?" until I succeed in actually meeting, face to face, one who will, at least, return my salutation in as civil a manner as that in which I give

SEATTLE'S GOLDEN POTLATCH
FRIDAY. Aug. 4. 1911
Potlatch Week.
The first celebration of the Golden Potlatch in the city of Seattle demonstrated that a carnival of the kind prepared for the one ending last Saturday may he made a success. It gave a splendid opportunity for a week's fun, and this in itself was a good idea. A city or a community needs a rest and play, just the same as the individual. When the play day is made instructive as well as entertaining it carries a double value and one side in no way detracts from the other. The Potlatch is said to have cost in the way of actual expense, $70,000. This sum is modest for an entertainment of the size Seattle offered and contrary to common expectation there was no attempt made at grafting in ways which are frequently to be looked for by visitors. Prices for food and shelter were not elevated for carnival week and there was enough of interest to give people something to look aside from the every-day sights of the big city. The Potlatch brought enormous crowds from the surrounding towns and country, and it was given a liberal patronage from British Columbia and states of the middle west and east. The Potlatch is to be made an annual institution and it is safe to predict the Potlatch of 1912 will be an even greater success than the one of this year.
"A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the best of men."
Seattle's first Golden Potlatch is now but a memory. From the first day to the last moment of the last night, it was a splendid success, thus assuring an annual celebration of the auspicious event commemorated in the excellent program of sports and spectacles presented for the amusement of the immense throngs of our own citizens and our guests from the surrounding country and other cities. It was a week of fun with no aftermath of regret the morning after, and it reflects unlimited credit on the able committees having it in charge.—Northwest Progress.
Seattle's first Potlatch surpassed expectations. The pageants, birdmen, naval reviews, balls, etc., went off without a hitch. During the week, the city was crowded with a fun-hunting crowded with a fun-hunting thousand outsiders. It proved an outing well worth while. Most of the visitors came from Washington; but British Columbia, Oregon and California sent liberal numbers, while hotel registers indicate that the remoter states were well represented. So successful was the celebration that it will be made an annual event. It can be depended upon that Seattle will improve upon each succeeding Potlatch.—Concrete Enterprise.
Potlatch week in Seattle went off without a hitch. Being the first time such a celebration was ever attempted, it was largely in the nature of an experiment. Several thousand business men were

J. F. DOUGLAS.
While J. F. Douglas is not wholly responsible for the Golden Potlatch, yet he was very largely responsible for the idea, and in deference to his original idea he was elected president of the association, and a great deal of its success is due to his untiring efforts. While he did little or nothing in the way of detail work, nevertheless he was always there with the ideas, which were perfected and executed by those under him. It is due to the confidence that the business men of Seattle have in Mr. Douglas that is prompting them to already begin to contribute funds for the next meeting of the Golden Potlatch, which is promised to be
entertained one day, tending to knit the commercial solidarity of the state much closer together. The amusement features were varied enough to suit all different tastes. Particularly interesting were the free flights of the Curtiss aviators over Puget Sound and the city. Pageants, aquatic sports, races, balls and other events all helped to make the time pass merrily. It is safe to say that Seattle's Potlatch is firmly established as an annual event hereafter.—Kent Advertiser.
The Potlatch carnival has left a favorable impression among members of organized labor. In fact, there is a better feeling; a more homey feeling, existing throughout the city since Potlatch week and the advertising Seattle will receive through the moving pictures will last more than the twelvemonth to intervene between now and the next Potlatch.—Union Record.

even more pretentious than the one just closed, of which quotations from the country and weekly press of the state concerning its success are herewith presented. It can be well said of J. F. Douglas that he grasped the opportunity, and even improved upon the opportunity. It has been but a few short yeras since he opened law offices in Seattle in the Lumber Exchange block and for a time followed his profession, but he saw mirages of business success and was not slow in following their leads. It was not long before he had organized an investment company, which caused to be erected a number of business and tenement blocks in Seattle, and then he formulated the idea of the Metropolitan
While the Potlatch was not intended as a money making scheme so far as the Seattle business men were concerned, yet many of them report a most excellent out of town trade during the week. While the hotels were all full and overflowing, yet the charges were exceedingly reasonable, more so than in ordinary times. Like the Bon Marche other large stores profited by the presence of the visitors in the city, even if they did nothing more than to look through the immense establishments. It is hard to find, if really such a person can be found, one who did not think the Potlatch a most excellent thing for Seattle and all are perfectly willing to help devise ways and means to have another at the same time of year next year and for that matter for all years to come.
---
Building Company, of which he is the secretary and publicity man, which company is causing to be erected on the old University grounds in the very heart of Seattle, a number of the most expensive buildings, and soon that company will have under its control more skyscrapers than any similar concern in the whole West. While he still does a little law business in the way of looking after the general points of law for his company he is so much absorbed in the investments, which his company control, that he no longer pays any attention whatever to the practice of law. With him continued at the head of the Potlatch Association there is no doubt of it continuing a howling success.
Seattle's first Potlatch proved a great success, and demonstrated that the "Seattle Spirit" still lives. No doubt the summer carnival will be an annual affair, and draw larger numbers of visitors with each succeeding year.Auburn Republican.
Seattle's first Golden Potlatch was a hummer, and as a result the big city got what she went after—the coin.—Olympia Independent.
Judge John B. Gordon is off for his summer vacation after a most strenuous year of it. The calendar has been pretty full this year owing to the fact that the Gill administration ran through the most of it and the judge has listened to a good many tales of woe within the past twelve months.
WEEKLIES.
Public Marriage at The Seattle Theatre.
After the last performance of "The Two Orphans" at the Seattle Theatre, Saturday night, Miss Nina Gallagher and Mr. Jose Lee will be married on the stage in full view of the audience. It will be a gala night at the Seattle Theatre as hundreds have already secured their seats for that night.
Starting with the matinee Sunday the well known play, "Rip Van Winkle" will be the bill. It will prove doubly attractive. First, it is a good wholesome play that every one likes. Second, it will mark the first appearance of Johhnie Pringle, manager of the company, in his favorite part, that of "Rip." Mr. Pringle has played this part for years with much success throughout the entire country and he holds first rank with the portrayers of this famous character. "Rip Van Winkle" will prove a big attraction for the ladies and children.
