THE SEDALIA TIMES. SMITH COLLEGE Geo. R. Smith College, Sedalia Mo Opens Next Tuesday September 10th. This famous school is one of the Forenss. Institution of Learning for the Negro Youth of the West. Good accommodation s. good surroundings. cheap board and Tuition, a good Christian Faculty. The editor of this paper spent a delightful day in Lexington Saturday of last week, including Sunday, on business in the interes of the Queen City Concert band. While there he was royally entertained by Sir Knight Huxes and Scott. These two gentlemen made his visit a most pleasant one. Lexington has a fine set of colored people, most of whom are working in the coal mines and make good wages and live well. Their picnic last Saturday was a complete success, but it seemed as though the man Workcutt worked the people to a somewhat large extent. The band contest was a fake pure and simple, and we were forced to say from the actions of Mr William Workcutt that he is a fake of the genius type, and a large number of Lexington people will bear us out in the statement. Roy Hurse and band or jubilee singers have been holding a successful meeting all this week in their tent on the corner of Morgan and Ohio streets. The tent has been more than crowded every night by both black and white to listen to the noble utterances of Revs Hurse, Dursey and Davis, and the meetings are doing much good, especially the lectures given by Rev Hurse. ```markdown ``` who has been appointed as one of the special people's Fair for next week. Ben Redman, who has been appointed as one of the special police at the State's Fair for next week. He is the only Negro appointed in whole force. Ben is alright and makes a good scrube policeman. RO Henderson and wife, Lagretta, and company with E Cook, and Richard Smith, all good performers, will give an entertainment of a week's duration at Forest Park commencing Monday. Mr Henderson and wife have made quite a reputation by their admirable performances in many of the large cities in California, Iowa, Utah, Colorado and Missouri, handlingali the latest "coon" songs and dances and funy comedy. They alone are well worth the price of admission. SEDALIA, MISSOURI Saturday, SEPT 7 1901 President McKinley President McKinley Shot and Fatally Wounded in Buffalo.. Special to the Times. Buffalo, N. Y., September 6—President McKinley was shot and mortally wounded today, one of the balls lodged in the right shoulder and the other in the abuomen. The assassin is said to To the young men who have cards on soliciting funds for the benefit of Taylor Chapel M E church, we would ask of them again to please be kind enough to turn in the cards even if you have no money on them. If you have had money given to you on them for this purpose please hand it in. The church needs this money and it is a very bad thing to collect money this way and keep it. Be men enough to make some kind of a report to the pastor or the captain of your band to-morrow. A PAPA NOW. D L Whit'e, porter at Ed McGurran's saloon, is now a proud father. A fine baby girl arrived at his home last Monday. White was hoping for a little one of the opposite gender but accepted t'e situation very philosophically and has quietly settled down to routine business. Base ball—Sedalia vs St Charles. His credentials are in the same. School started here September 2. Ostracism of Negro workmen by 'labor unions is having a telling and injurious effect on the great steele strike. In the Southern steel mills, Negroes are largely employed and the operators of the Northern mills are employing them to fill the places of the strikers. As Negroes are regularly refused admission to full and equal rights in the unions and are not consider d as fellow workmen, there is no reason why we should sympa- thize with them in their trouble. When white labor learns to treat the Negro with respect it will then see the folly of its past conduct. Jefferson City excursion Sunday, July 8th via Katy. The Union League of Washington has just made an exhaustive inquiry into the status of the colored population there. It finds that commendable progress has been made in business, in spite of a good many drawbacks, there being over 83 varieties of business in which colored people are engaged says the Star. There are more than 1,300 colored proprietors, one-fourth of whom have been in business as room keepers and nine calabo be per. There are 53 physicians, 12 trained nurses, tea dentists and 33 lawyers. Among other conclusions reached by more than ten years, they give employment to over 28,080 persons. They have $654,761 invested in business and they do an aggregate of business yearly of $',750,000. Barber shops, restaurants, cobb e shops, express delivery and similar callings constitute the larger portion, but there are 17 contractors, 75 fish dealers, 130 grocers and 49 market stand proprietors, and in all this lot only 11 pool room keepers. The result of this investigation is that colored people are not disposed to patronize one another in these classes of business in which the whites seriously compete for trade. This is ascribed partly to lack of confidence, and partly to envy and jealousy. While you are taking in the State fair and the many sights next week, you will not feel good until you have called at DAN CLIFF-FORD'S, 117 East Main street and sampled the famous LEMP'S EXTRA PALE or his famous and extra fine brands of liquors and cigars. CANDY CATHARTIC --- CANDY CATHARTIC Cascarets CURE CONSTIPATION REGULATE THE LIVER 10c 25c 50c ALL DRUGGISTS SEARCH FOR THE TILE FISH. Parts of Government Agents to Locate the Much-Wanted Species. The United States fish commission is about to make an effort to determine as precisely as possible the area of sea bottom occupied by the tilefish—that strange and interesting finny species which was first discovered in 1879, only to be rendered almost extinct soon afterward by a marine cataclysm wholly unprecedented, says the Saturday Evening Post. The fish commission thinks that an important and lucrative fishery for the tilfish may be created, when once the fishermen are informed at to where they should go to look for the species, which is excellently adapted for the table. Hitherto it has remained almost unknown simply because its home is in the depths. There is reason to believe that it has again become very numerous, and a reference to the history of the famous catastrophe of 1882 shows that in March and April of that year 7,500 square miles of ocean were found profusely sprinkled with tilfish, the number being estimated at one thousand millions. The eastern edge of the North American continent is overflowed by the sea, that is why the water near the coast is so shallow. To find the true edge of the great continental land mass, one would have to travel about 80 miles due eastward from New York. There begins a sudden descent to the floor of the ocean, which is $21\%$ taller deep. A narrow bolt of this density, running north and south, is located by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and here is found the tile-fish. The catastrophe above mentioned, which so nearly wiped out the marine species, was undoubtedly due to an invasion of the belt by the arctic current. ZIRTS with WAX WOMEN. Chasleman from Wyoming Throws Misses to Figures in Store Windows. A versions policeman on a beat that takes in the swell department stores of State street tells a queer story of a chasleman from the plains of Wyoming, says the Chicago Chronicle. According to the officer's story the chasleman fairly fell head and ears in love with one wax figure of a beautiful female in a prominent show window of Chicago's great shopping thoroughfare. "When I first saw the cowboy throwing kisses at the pretty woman of war," said the policeman, "I at first thought he must be drunk or crazy. But he was neither. The real truth was that he had never in his life before seen a dummy figure of a woman of the perfect type then standing before him in the glare of the show lights at night, and his explanation was that before he realized the exquisitely attired grand dress was nothing but a cold end life.
