James Benja man Parker. The Man Who Saved the President From Instant Death—His Buttons Cut Off as Souvenirs—Money Being Raised for Him. There are few parallels of perso al or very and presence of mind to equal that of the Negro, James B Parker, who saved the president from instant death by knocking the revoyer from the hand just at the moment when it was aimed at his heart. The leading journal's of the North propose a popular subscription for his benefit. The white people of Nebraska and o her states, and especially the city of Philadelphia, are warm in their acrimination of the Negro hero, Parker. Parker's home is at 450 Sixth avenue, New York City. He is over six feet tall and weighs over 250 pounds. He went to Buffalo some montes ago to work in a staurant at the Exposition. On Friday afternoon Parker had just snaken hands with the president when Zologoz steped toward and fired. Of all the horrified throng he alone seemed to retain his presence of mind. With a swift blow he knocked the smoking pistol from the assassin's hand as he continued to aim at the president. Then he caught the man by the neck and spun him around as if he were a top. An other instant and both fists of the Negro were raining sledge-hammer blows on the stranger. The assassins nose was broken and some of his teeth are missing. The detectives just then rushed up in time to prevent him from being killed. He was almost unconscious. "O, for only ten seconds more!" cried the Negro, so being like a baby. The following interview which we quote from the Evening Chronicle is from a well known St Louisan and shows now the people lionize this brave man: I was within 150 feet of the president; when he w. s. shot, says Robert Aull, who has just returned from Buffalo, "and the colored man who caught and cheked Cz. Izgosz was the hero of the day. The people gathered around him in great crowds, and nearly cut his clothing off him in their anxiety to get a souvenir. They began cutting his buttons off and then by cutting pieces of his coat away. However nearly everyone who used a knife or scissors on his clothes rewarded him handsomely and he got any number of ones and five-and-ton dollar bills. He was a powerful fellow and said if they had just let him alone a few seconds longer he would have choked him to death." This is the way the New York World describes the attack of the Negro on the assassin: "One quick shift of the clenched fist and he knocked the pistol from the assailant's hand. A left hook and he spun the man around like a top. One more punch and he broke the man's nose; again and he split his lip and knocked out several teeth. The man who tried to murder President McKinley was only half conscious when they tore Parker away. "Oh, for only ten seconds more! he cried, sobbing like a baby. Somebody in that big crowd kept his head. That someone was James B Parker, whose name will go down into history as a man of matchless pluck and presence of mind. COLLEGE OPENED TUESDAY. The George R Smith college opened Tuesday with prospects for a most successful year. Several changes have been made on account of the resignation of Professors Whitby and Stephens. Prof. Whitby's position as teacher of science has been filled by the election of Prof J W Hoffman, Ph D. He received his education at the leading colleges of the country and is a member of the most prominent scientific societies of Europe and America. Lincoln Institute opened this year with the largest enrollment she has ever had at the opening. This is a remarkable thing in view of the fact that our state and section have had this year one of the severest drouths in the history of our country. The enrollment to date is 161 which is 30 more than it had at this time last year. FOURTEEN CHILDREN IN NINE YEARS. Wilkes county, Ga., comes forward with the most prolific mother of the new century. Her name is Peggy Wat-Katkins, a negress, who lives about 14 miles west of Washington on the plantation of D C Hill. She was married when 17 years of age and during the nine years she has been married has given birth to fourteen children. He pays out money every time his wife stamps her foot.—The World. Judge Grover and the Clergyman. The following anecdote of Judge Martin Grover is told by Henry L. Clinton in his "Celebrated Trials". Before he went on the bench, Grover defended a man for the murder of his wife by throwing her down a well. In addition to proof of circumstances of the homicide, the prosecution, in order to show his want of affection, by his coldblooded and brutal indifference to his wife, called as a witness a clergyman, who testified that he attended her funeral and sat in the pulpit with the officiating clergyman; and that while the latter was engaged in prayer, the prisoner was looking across the church winking at some of the girls on one side of the room, and continued to do so during the prayer. The impression given by this test.mony can be well imagined. Its effect was to shock the jury and the audience. In construing the conduct of the prisoner, in respect to the circumstances of the homicide, it was not unlikely that this evidence would be the turning point to convict him. Miss Cecilia Patterson one of the graduates of Lincoln High school, is teaching in Springfield this state. We wish the young teacher much success. Miss Holmes, a very charming and genteel young Sedalia lady, is teaching in Sweet Springs. R O Henderson has about consented to remain in Sedalia for a while longer and will continue to instruct the Queen City Concert band. Rev Hurst who has been conducting a series of tent meetings in this city for the past two or three weeks, will preach his closing sermon Sunday night and on Monday night he will complete his lecture on "The Train." He and his band of noble singers have given Sedalia excellent service and have accomplished great good.
