A GRAND BANQUET Dr J W Jackson and Presiding Elder B Davis, were banqueted at the residence of Mrs J W Jackson Wednesday night. Among those present were nearly all the school teachers in the city and many other prominent citizens. Refreshments, consisting of ice cream, cake, grapes and sandwiches were served to all present, and a general good time was had. STUDENTS: It affords me great pleasure to speak to you this afternoon, and tell you a few things that will help you to solve some of the most difficult problems of life. First, I desire to say that I do not wish to try to offer to you a solution of a problem to any one of your lives. But I deem that this is the proper time and place to impress upon your minds that nothing that has ever been manufactured, has proven to be better than the material from which it comes. You boys and girls can never expect to be of great service to yourselves and people unless you place value upon yourselves. In your minds you may ask yourselves the question: "What must we do in order to place value upon ourselves?" It simply means you must form good habits. Much depends upon the impression you are going to make upon the people with whom you are going to be thrown n contact with. Therefore I desire that all of you be sine re in your habits. Now is the time to weed your souls to an eternal principle; so when you shall have grown up to true manhood and womanhood, your ties to right can never be severed. You have an excellent opportunity to become useful young men and women. You little boys and girls have seen poor crops, and you have seen your parents put forth many hard efforts to get something for you to eat, because everything was scarce, and on account of the scarcity of things and everybody having to buy their supply, things really cost more. The manager of the Queen City Concert band received a telegram Thursday from the Dekreko Bros Carnival show, asking the band to fill an engagement next week at Kansas City during the big carnival. It is not certain that the noys will go, but there is a very good chance of their being heard all next week in the Orient midway in the above city if all are agreeable. The George R Smith Football team which was known last year as the "Dewey" team, under the management of Dr J M Harris, is now ready to meet any all colored teams. There is some talk of a game between them and the Ft Scott, Kansas, team about next Friday in this city. It will no doubt be a hot one as 10th teams are said to be very good, this year. On account of the St Louis fair and Exposition, the M K & T Try will run a owrate excursion to St Louis, Thursday night October 10. Only $2.50 round trip. HAVE HAD THEIR CHURCH REPAIKED, Rev Coleman of California has bad his church nicely painted and repaired, and it is said to be one of the best M E church now in the Sedalia district. They also held a grand rally last week that proved a big success. At the second quarterly meeting the church paid all of its quarterly claims. It is strange how some people like to hear the sound of their own voices so well, that they will go into a man's place of business, take up a newspaper, and proceed to read it loud to the annoyance of every one in the room. 北 MRS. If Lewis Cowan wants to "stir up something," now is a good time for him to stir up that Forum Club again. The white voters of the first ward have begun figuring on their candidate for alderman a ready. Now let the colored voters of this ward do likewise, but settle on a good Negro. We wonder if Alderman Sea'ley or Brown have ever seen that hole on the corner of Ohio and Morgan streets. If they haven't they should take a look at it before the city becomes involved in law suit. Anarchy is infamous; it is treason against the government and prompt action should be taken to stamp it cut in this country. Major William Warner, of Kansas City, is said to be slated for Secretary of the interior of the interior in President Roosevelt's cabinet. They have a new drink in Kansas that is composed of hard cider, alcohol and water. It is said that one glass makes a man ready for a frolic, two for a fight and three for the undertaker. The destruction of ragweed and other vegetation, which are said to cause hay fever, is one of the benefits to a portion of mankind that the drouth has given. The loafers in this city should form a Coxey's army and go out and walk on the grass a day and let the ground cool off? James Parker, who was said to have knocked down Czolgczez while in the act of firing the third shot, was not so much as called upon to testify at the trial. More than that the secret service men left him entirely out of their evidence. So hastens glory away. James Younger who with his brother Coleman was released from the Minnesota penitentiary last July after an imprisonment of twenty-five years, is said to be dying at a hospital in St. Paul from injuries received by being thrown from his wagon two weeks ago. It has been published in the democratic papers that Mrs Roosevelt intends discharging all the Negro servants from the white house and filling their places with white servants. We have our doubts a truth of such statements and simply believe that these journals are engaged in the sified—to them—task of manufacturing campaign thunder. Dr J W Jackson D D has been spending the past two weeks at his home in this city with his parents. Rev R Davis P E held a successful quarterly meeting at this place last Sunday. He will hold quarterly meeting to-morrow at Clinton. Rev W C Williams left Wednesday for Kansas City to attend the A M E conference in session this week. He will also extend an invitation to the members of the conference to meet in this city next year. The United States fish commission to about to make an effort to determine as precisely as possible the area of sea bottom occupied by the tilefish—that strange and interesting finny species which was first discovered in 1879, only to be rendered almost extinct soon afterward by a marine cataclysm wholly unprecedented, says the Saturday Evening Post. The fish commission thinks that an important and lucrative fishery for the tilefish may be created, when once the fishermen are informed at to where they should go to look for the species, which is excellently adapted for the table. Hitherto it has remained almost unknown simply because its home is in the depths. There is reason to believe that it has again become very numerous, and a reference to the history of the famous catastrophe of 1882 shows that in March and April of that year 7,500 square miles of ocean were found profusely sprinkled with tilefish, the number being estimated at one thousand millions. The eastern edge of the North American continent is overflowed by the sea, and that is why the water near the coast is so shallow. To find the true edge of the great continental land mass one would have to travel about 80 miles due eastward from New York. There begins a sudden descent to the floor of the ocean, which is 2½ miles deep. A narrow belt of this density, running north and south, is bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and here is found the tile-fish. The catastrophe above mentioned, which so nearly wiped out the native species, was undoubtedly due to an invasion of the belt by the arctic continent. WIRTS WITH WAX WOMEN.
