SEE KATY AGBNTS AND GO!!!
All day and half the night in St. Louis,
HELP THE NEGRO GIRLS TO RISE.
Hark! I Lear a woman weeping;
Don't you hear her as she cries;
Mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors,
Help the Negro girls to rise.
Do you realize her troubles?
Do you wonder why she sighs?
She is loaded down with trials
As she makes attempts to rise.
When she looks around for helpers,
Looks to those who should advise;
Often they are quite indifferent,
Of C A Hard, Jr., to

STUDENTS: — It affords
sure to speak to you this
e tell you a few things
you to solve some of the
problems of life.
Wheesoo'er her duties call her,
Damons, clothed in human guise.
Are at work at night and daytime
To retard her lest she rise.
Many a whirlpool of temptation
In her pathway ever lie';
It requires the strength of a Herculean
If she manages to rise.
God of heaven! Thou who hearest,
And rewards the soul that tries.
Hear us in this our petition
Help us Negro girls to rise.
Help us to resist temptation.
Help us to be good and wise;
Strengthen us in every weakness.
Help us Negro girls to rise.
GOOD LESSON.
We have no right to judge a person
Until they are fairly tried;
Should we not like their company,
We know the world is wide,
Some may have faults, and who has not?
The old as well as young,
Pertains we may, for all we know,
Have fifty to their one.
In speaking of a person's faults,
Pray don't forget your own.
Remember, they with homes of glass,
Should never throw a stone.
If we have nothing else to do
Than talk of those who sin,
Tis better to commence at home.
And from that point begin.
Now let us all, when we begin
To sander friend or foe.
Think of the havoc one word may do
To those we little know.
Don't speak of other people's faults. Until we have none of our own.
A GRAND BANQUET
Dr J W Jackson and Presiding Elder B Davis, were banqueted at the residence of Mrs J W Jackson Wednesday night. Among those present were nearly all the school teachers in the city and many other prominent citizens. Refreshments, consisting of ice cream, cake, grapes and sandwiches were served to all present, and a general good time was had.

Teach's Address
Of C A Hard, Jr., to His School, at Georgetown, Mo., Sept. 27, 1901.
STUDENTS: It affords me great pleasure to speak to you this afternoon, and tell you a few things that will help you to solve some of the most difficult problems of life.
First, I desire to say that I do not wish to try to offer to you a solution of a problem to any one of your lives.
But I deem that this is the proper time and place to impress upon your minds that nothing that has ever been manufactured, has proven to be better than the material from which it comes. You boys and girls can never expect to be of great service to yourselves and people unless you place value upon yourselves.
In your minds you may ask yourselves the question: "What must we do in order to place value upon ourselves?"
It simply means you must form good habits.
Much depends upon the impression you are going to make upon the people with whom you are going to be thrown n contact with.
Therefore I desire that all of you be sine re in your habits. Now is the time to weed your souls to an eternal principle; so when you shall have grown up to true manhood and womanhood, your ties to right can never be severed.
You have an excellent opportunity to become useful young men and women.
You little boys and girls have seen poor crops, and you have seen your parents put forth many hard efforts to get something for you to eat, because everything was scarce, and on account of the scarcity of things and everybody having to buy their supply, things really cost more.
So it is to-day. The world is in great need of honest, upright, straightforward

The manager of the Queen City Concert band received a telegram Thursday from the Dekreko Bros Carnival show, asking the band to fill an engagement next week at Kansas City during the big carnival. It is not certain that the noys will go, but there is a very good chance of their being heard all next week in the Orient midway in the above city if all are agreeable.
The George R Smith Football team which was known last year as the "Dewey" team, under the management of Dr J M Harris, is now ready to meet any all colored teams. There is some talk of a game between them and the Ft Scott, Kansas, team about next Friday in this city. It will no doubt be a hot one as 10th teams are said to be very good, this year.
On account of the St Louis fair and Exposition, the M K & T Try will run a owrate excursion to St Louis, Thursday night October 10. Only $2.50 round trip. Train leaves Sedalia at 8:45 p m, arriving at St Louis, Friday at 6:30 a m. Returning train leaves St Louis, Friday at 11:45 p m, giving lots of time to see both of these great shows. Fine attractions at all the theaters. Don't miss it.
Rev R Davis will leave to-day for Hughesville where he will hold his second quarterly meeting.

business-like young men and women. I desire then to see you all grow up honest and useful for, as I have said, the scarcity of such young men and women, and the great demand for them will actually place a great value upon you. I am indeed glad that you are here in the country. I appreciate the advantage of having you screen d from evil and crime, as most city children are not. In this and similar country schools lie the future hopes of this our great Amer can country. So let each of you strive to be the best girl and the best boy in school, and by so doing none will fall behind second place.
HAVE HAD THEIR CHURCH REPAIKED,
Rev Coleman of California has bad his church nicely painted and repaired, and it is said to be one of the best M E church now in the Sedalia district. They also held a grand rally last week that proved a big success. At the second quarterly meeting the church paid all of its quarterly claims.
It is strange how some people like to hear the sound of their own voices so well, that they will go into a man's place of business, take up a newspaper, and proceed to read it loud to the annoyance of every one in the room.

Hustler's Hall, owing to financial embarrassments, has closed its doors. The mixed assemblages of toughs, of both sexes, have ceased to congregate there and the "can" is no longer a familiar sight sitting in and out of the door. It is a clear case of "good riddance to bad rubbish."

If Lewis Cowan wants to "stir

time for him to stir up that Forum
Club again.
The white voters of the first ward have begun figuring on their candidate for alderman a ready. Now let the colored voters of this ward do likewise, but settle on a good Negro.
We wonder if Alderman Sea'ley or Brown have ever seen that hole on the corner of Ohio and Morgan streets. If they haven't they should take a look at it before the city becomes involved in law suit.
Anarchy is infamous; it is treason against the government and prompt action should be taken to stamp it cut in this country.
Major William Warner, of Kansas City, is said to be slated for Secretary of the interior of the interior in President Roosevelt's cabinet.
They have a new drink in Kansas that is composed of hard cider, alcohol and water. It is said that one glass makes a man ready for a frolic, two for a fight and three for the undertaker.
The destruction of ragweed and other vegetation, which are said to cause hay fever, is one of the benefits to a portion of mankind that the drouth has given.
The loafers in this city should form a Coxey's army and go out and walk on the grass a day and let the ground cool off?
James Parker, who was said to have knocked down Czolgczez while in the act of firing the third shot, was not so much as called upon to testify at the trial. More than that the secret service men left him entirely out of their evidence. So hastens glory away.
James Younger who with his brother Coleman was released from the Minnesota penitentiary last July after an imprisonment of twenty-five years, is said to be dying at a hospital in St. Paul from injuries received by being thrown from his wagon two weeks ago.
It has been published in the democratic papers that Mrs Roosevelt intends discharging all the Negro servants from the white house and filling their places with white servants. We have our doubts a truth of such statements and simply believe that these journals are engaged in the sified—to them—task of manufacturing campaign thunder.

Now is the time to begin organizing the long talked of Negro Business Men's Club. Organize it now and place it on a solid foundation. Put only true men at the head of it. During the coming spring there will be many demands for such a club, and not only then but now we need it. Why can't we have one? Don't stand back because you think there are no enough Negroes in business here to effect an organization of from 50 to 100 members. Get together those we have, let them be men of any trade or profession, even the teachers and clergymen, and then start and do something. We will show for ourselves here and elsewhere.

ANOTHER VICTIM
She Paid for a Receipt, But Got Advice.
"Oh, Harold," exclaimed Mrs. Boulevarden, looking up from the paper with a smile of delight, "here it is at last."
"Here's what, my dear?" demanded Mr. Boulevarden. "Another markdown?"
"No, Harold; but just what I have been waiting for—a positive remedy for water bugs and mice."
"Indeed?"
"Yes. Oh, what a boom it will be. Think of the relief from those horrid things! We shall be able to keep cake and cheese now without being afraid that when we go to get any of it we shall find it in crumbs. I shall get the remedy right away."
"What is it, dearest? You know we've tried borax and rough on rats and everything, without avail."
"No, it's nothing like those. Listen,
it says, 'Send $1 to Lock Box No. 111,
111, New York city, and receive directions
for complete relief from the water
bugs and mice in your house. I'll
do it.'
So Mrn. Boulevarden sent the $1.
So Mrs. Boulevarden sent the $1.
In three days she received in a big envelope the priceless remedy. Nervously she tore open the envelope and drew forth a sheet of paper on which was written:
"To obtain complete relief from the water bugs and mice in your house,
MOVE OUT."
True.
She—What a host of tender memories cluster about a lock of golden hair. He—That depends whether we find it in a locket or the soup.
A Baffling Disease.
The devoted husband, with the aged physician, stood by her bedside. They had done all that human skill could do, but in vain. It was evident that a human life was ebbing away.
With an agonized gesture the husband turned to the man of medicine. "Can you do nothing more?" he cried, in despairing entreaty.
The other shook his head silently. "My skill is baffled," he said. "All my tests have failed to disclose the nature of the malady. If I only knew——"
Suddenly she opened her eyes. "It is my birthday to-morrow," she gasped. "My husband has bought me a present, and——"
The words came slowly. "I'm—just—dying—to—see—it."

Wines Rival the World in Excellence. Cid, cis, and mellow by age and years of care and frequent racking all unaged cellars as is done with the Chateau Wines in France.
THE MUSEUM
The Chateau contains a limited supply of Private Stock Port nineteen years old, besides Burgundy and Claret nearly the same age. The Speer Port, however, nine years old, as well as the Burgundy, Claret and Sherry, are high class wines. The ★★★ Climax Brandy is 18 years old. All are preferred where known by the Medical profession as superior to any that can be bead, for
their excellent effect upon the system when used by invalids, the weakly aged persons and in general family use. Northern New Jersey climate, and soil abounding in iron is just adapted for this grape for Port wine. It is the same kind of soil as in Portugal. Speer's winery and vineyards are the only Port grape vineyards in the United States; only vineyards that cultivate the real Port wine grape of Portugal; while the wines or mixtures called port are made without a single Oporto grape in them. Mr. Speer is the first and only one who imported the vines and acclimated the real Port wine grape vines of Portugal. He spent thousands of dollars as a hobby to see what he could do toward acclimating these Portugal vines here. It took eight years for them to become acclimated before Mr. Speer got a single grape; during those years all died except about eight hundred vines, when those began to grow vigorous and bear fruit; from these, layers were made for new vines. The vineyards now cover fifty six acres. It has proven a success. The grapes are allowed to hang on the vines until they begin to raisin, when they have parted with some of the water and are rich in sugar; and the wine made from Port wine grapes is the only real genuine Port wine made in America. It is by far THE wine the weakest persons, the aged and for evening entertainments.

SEARCH FOR THE TILE FISH.
Shorts of Government Agents to Locate the Much-Wanted Species.
The United States fish commission to about to make an effort to determine as precisely as possible the area of sea bottom occupied by the tilefish—that strange and interesting finny species which was first discovered in 1879, only to be rendered almost extinct soon afterward by a marine cataclysm wholly unprecedented, says the Saturday Evening Post.
The fish commission thinks that an important and lucrative fishery for the tilefish may be created, when once the fishermen are informed at to where they should go to look for the species, which is excellently adapted for the table. Hitherto it has remained almost unknown simply because its home is in the depths. There is reason to believe that it has again become very numerous, and a reference to the history of the famous catastrophe of 1882 shows that in March and April of that year 7,500 square miles of ocean were found profusely sprinkled with tilefish, the number being estimated at one thousand millions.
The eastern edge of the North American continent is overflowed by the sea, and that is why the water near the coast is so shallow. To find the true edge of the great continental land mass one would have to travel about 80 miles due eastward from New York. There begins a sudden descent to the floor of the ocean, which is 2½ miles deep. A narrow belt of this density, running north and south, is bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and here is found the tile-fish. The catastrophe above mentioned, which so nearly wiped out the native species, was undoubtedly due to an invasion of the belt by the arctic continent.

Cattleman from Wyoming Throws
Misses to Figures in Store
Windows.
A versatile policeman on a beat that
takes in the swell department stores of
State street tells a queer story of a
cattleman from the plains of Wyoming,
says the Chicago Chronicle. According
to the officer's story the ranchman
fairly fell head and ears in love
with one wax figure of a beautiful
female in a prominent show window of
Chicago's great shopping thoroughfare.
"When I first saw the cowboy throwing kisses at the pretty woman of waz," said the policeman. "I at first thought he must be drunk or crazy. But he was neither. The real truth was that he find never in his life before seen a dammy figure of a woman of the perfect type then standing before him in the glare of the show lights at night, and his explanation was that before he realized the exquisitely attired grand dress was nothing but a cold and life-
