It is expected that there will be about 600 delegates at the Southern Negro Congress, which will convene at Galveston, Texas, July 1-5. Among the number will be some of the most prominent Negroes of the Southern states. They will be appointed by the governors of their respective states, ten from each congressional district and five at large from each state which will be represented. The first secession of the congress was held a year ago at Jackson, Miss. The object of the organization is to create a better feeling between the races and to foster any move for the uplifting of the race. The matters to be discussed are the importance of education, the question of outrages and lynchings and the Negro in politics. WILL LEAVE SUNDAY. Many Sedalians will visit their old homes Joe Johnson actually tookes best under that white hat and in his blue suit, not saying anything about his gun, star and club. Ex-Officer Newbill went off the force Wednesday night and went outona {run over the MK&T “Lbhursday morning. All he had to do was to lay dewn the gun and starand change buttons, put on his cap, grab bis lantern and begin work. But his salary is not quite so large. Capt. Mason, who was let off of the pglice force under the new ad- ministrat'on, is said to be a repub- lican candidate for constable Capt. Mason has done much work for the party, and always appears to be bringing up the rear, and it is high time he was given some kind of ‘a rewerd by his party, He seems to be adapted to con- stable work and ought to havea job there somewhere, We would like to know of those candidates who are <eeking office which way they are traveling’ Re- member. all the people are not on if you are iooking for office trom the people’s vote, either by con- vention ,or otherwise, you must get yourself before the people hy means of printer’s ink. We would like to know ‘the Re publican candidate can expect to get an election witiout the color- ed vote. The colored people are as arule Republican, and gener- ally vote this ticket, but when annopnces himself as a candidate and solicite their support only oniy through the columns of a white paper when there is a Negro paper in the same {tewn, then it is hard to say how they will deal with him. If you want the sup- port of ;the coJored men in the convention or primary you must announce yourself with them the ee as you do with the Daily Capital or German paper, or we wil know that you do not need ‘them when you fail to do this. The Democratic county con- vention will be helc about August 11tb, but we notice that the Dem- ocratic candidates are announcing very rapidly, and are getiing them- selves before the people and are making friends and votes for their convention, while on the other Land we note that there are only a few Republicans [who have an- nounced themselves, but who seem to be waiting tilla few weeks before tke convention. We say say that any man who is looking for the peoples vote for any office should announce himself early enough so that all the veople will know who they are. But if you lay back and wait you should not jeepecu the people to rush up and put you in office on a silver plate: lor waiter. There is some changes that could be made in cur county offi- ecials this fall teat would be a great benifit to the colored peo- ple, and there only will ccme at the county coovention and at the poils on election day. We must begin to putting our forces togeth er now and de all that wecan a- gainst any candidate for §judge of the county court that isor will be against any competant Negro for janitor of court house. Ifthe the present court is against any compotant Negrogfor this umble and slavish possition, then tae Negroes througheut the eounty hasa just right to fight them down, whither he be a democrat or arepublican. Itls a fact that there never bas been a Negro de- puty or clerk {in any department efthe court house, and *the looks affairs just pow seems|{to tell us that the time has not come yet. But the time has long since come and gone when the eleven hun- dred or more Negro voters of Pettis countyfshoula have hada represgntive in this court house as janitor. So we urge apon you te be on your guard and less put some Negro from some part of in as janitor. The people who are lovers of Tecital:, solos and dramatic work missee the rarest treat of their lifetime last Wednesday night when they failed to attend the en- tertainment g.ven by Miss Henzi- etta Vinton Davis and Albert Young at the Quinn Chapel AM E church. These people were actually the best of their kind ever before the Sedalia colored people, and the performance from beginniag to end was that of only high culture ane first class work; They came to the city well recom. mended, and we are safe in saying that they left our city bearing the highest praise.‘ The church was Short Talks On-Advertising ByCharlesAustin Bates, Most all advertising nowadays tells the truth. Most all business men have learned the lesson that even slight misrepresentation in their advertisements causes a loss of confidence, which more than business know that there are times when it actual on a certain article or a certain line of goods. The reliability of an advertisement should be measured by the reputation of the advertiser. If he does not lie in his ordinary buSiness and social relations it is fair to-suppose that he does not lie in his advertising. It is a matter of prin- ciple, and a matter of business also. Every statement that is made in an adver- tisement ought to be carefully weighed, and even the appearance of untruth excluded. A truthful statement by an honest man in a good paper will bring returns every time. The best paper in which to advertise is the one which possesses the confidence of the com- munity in the highest degree. _. The high character of the paper will throw. jfor such a rare treat, but there was a fair crowd, enough. to bring | door receipts of $11 85. | Wien a candidate wais until ie day of the convention before helets it be known that he is an ‘office seeker be must have been afraid the people would search up ‘his record and find him wanting in manhood. No snap judgment goes this year. You must come out plainly so the peopie will have achance to know and look ap oar record or 20 go. We want no cowards in this band to make our colors fly. We want valiant hearted men who ure not afraid to try. If the colored voter wants to do something this fali now is the time to prepare for the battie. Elsewhere in this issue will be found the announcement of Mr. A. F. Tesmer, who is a cancidate for Justice of the Peace. Mr Tesmer is an old resident of our city, and has done muci to help build it up. He has worked hard and earnestly for the success of the party of which he is a mem- ber. Mr. Tesmer is known by all Sedalians as an honest, straight- torward man, and atong this line has gained the confidence of the whole people. He has had con- siderable dealing with the colored people, aud in every instance has shown to them his friendship. The members of the couveniiov will make no mistake in selecting him because he isa strong candidate and a qualified man for the office which he now seeks. 0.C. Mr. Speer is the first and only one who imported the vines and acclimated the real Port wine grape vines of Portugal. He spent thousands of dollars as a hobby to see what he could do toward acclimating these Portugal vines here. It took eight years for them to become acclimated before Mr. Speer got a single grape; during those years all died except about eight hundred vines, when those began to grow vigorous and bear fruit; from these, layers were made for new vines. The vineyards now cover fifty six acres. It has proven a success. The grapes are allowed to hang on the vines until they begin to raisin, when they have parted with some of the water and are rich in sugar; and the wine made from.
