VOL. VIII THE NEGRO REPUBLI CAN STATE LEAGUE. TO MEET IN SEDALIA ON JUNE, 23st Fully Three Hundred of Delagates from Every Town in the State is Expected here. Prof. J. Silas Harris, of Kansas City president of the Negro Republican State League, informes us that the next assembly of the League will be held in Sedalia commencing June 23st. One of the main objects of this gathering or, to unite their forces in all parts of the state for the coming state election, and to advise some plan that will benefit the thousands of Negro voters and citizens of Old Missouri. There will be one delagate to every 200 voters in the state, of which will give us a gathering of more than 300 delagates. many of them are leaders from St Louis, Kansas City, St Joseph, Hannible, Springfield and other towns in the state. This convention promises to be the largest convention of Negroes held in this state for years. Sufficient arrangements are being made by local members in the city to give the visitors a pleasant time time while in our city. The large criminal court room has been engaged to hold their convention, and the early part of next week the entire program will be outlined. Let each citizen join in and help us make this republican gathering an noble one, and at the same time make the visitors feel themselves at white in our midst. Bits of Wisdom for the Mothers.} Teach your children correct enunciation. Pains are taken to have children properly taught to sing, but they are not carefully taught to read and speak, yet more than half the charms of social intercourse ends on the agreeable use of the voice. Teach your children the proper use of money. Do not indulge them by giving them money in an indiscriminate manner to spend as they please. Children who gets a nickel every time they ask for it often make themselves sick eating cheap cakes and candy, sickness or resulting from your own selfishness in giving them anoy to be rid of their importances. It is also apt to make them grow up with extravagant ideas, and very often stealing is the second step, when parents indulgence has worn out. Teach them to be selfconfident. The world respects and upholds the one who will "do and dare." Those who make their mark in the world are bold the aggressive and the self-confidence. Those who dare mark out a path and have the courage to follow it. Teach them to do what is right regardless of artificial rewards and penalties. Teach them to prefer the good without preference to self, to plan for and aim at giving others pleasure, not getting it. And although in so doing they will experience a rich enjoyment themselves, it will be incidental, have one for which they had striven. Teach them to be forgiving, to be courteus. A well-bred child is ever a courteous child: forgiveness and courtesy go hand in hand. Don't allow your children to be 'snubby' towards people. Teach them they can never avenge one wrong by committing another; two wrongs never made a right. 'Discourage bitterness, jealousy and rancor: teach them that "speech is silver," but silence is golden. The very best way to meet insult and injury is with an utter, sifting indifference; nothing cuts the slander like the knowledge of being totally ignored. Anger, hatred, bicking and quarrelling always inflict the greatest wrong in their reaction. Teach them never to argue with the postive person, it (oes no) pay, sauvity IS better than insisting on your own opinion and getting it, even if you know you are in the right dont force your opinion. Death has no favorite ones, he mows down the young, the old and the middle age the same, on last Wednesday evening he visited the bedside of John Venerable, who had been very sick for the pass four weeks from consumption, and called him from labor to rest. Mr Venerable was 19 years, two months and three days old at the time of his death. He leaves a grandmother, two brothers, two sisters and a host of young friends to mourn his lost. The funeral services were conducted by Rev DrBoe, from the M. E. Church. Friday morning and was attended by a number of his friends and associates. Card of Thanks. E. church, under the management of Mrs. H. L. Billiaps, Wm. Huston and C. W. White are arranging for a grand three-night bazaar, beginning June 18 and continuing till the 20th. The fight for county offices is now at hand and let no clever tongue sore head talker pervert you from supporting your friends, or from supporting those who is willing to give some of the spoils to the Negro. Get in the fight, look in our announcement column, and see who are the candidates who are soliciting your support, and if you find a man who will do more for the Negro by giving the Negroes such deputies; clerkseip or janitorship as he can fill with cred it, then pull off your coat and support him. Do not let the matter of what the democratic-republican bosses did in the spring election, stop you from supporting the republican ticket, in which your best friends are. We are pleased to present to our readers, the announcement of Judge J·L. Smith, which will be found in another column of this paper, who is a Republican candidate for renomination of Justice of the Peace. Judge Smith was elected to fill out the unexpired term of the deceased G, W. Burr, and during the time he has so conducted the business of this office that ois record speaks louder than words for his nomination and election. During the past two years Judge Smith's business has been of only the first class clients, from the fact that the people has an unlimited confidence in his honesty and in his integrity as a justice. He is now is his 74 year, and is will educated in the different parts of law. He has did his duty in every respect without regard to man, color or wealth. He only seeks this honor on his past record and his unquestionable ability. Should the convention give him the nomination we believe his election is assure. Read what the Capital says about him sometimes ago. Dr. J. L. Smith yesterday celebrated the first anniversary of his induction into office. He has been a citizen of Sedalia for many year, a tireless and consistent worker in the republican cause, and now, at the full of a life of usefulness, he is serving Sedalia Townshiy as Justice of the peace — honestly, conservatively, and as a man of responsibility would naturally be expected to serve. Elsewhere in our paper this week will be found the announcement of Jas. A. Robb, who is a republican candidate for Circuit Clerk of Pettis county. Mr Robb was elected to constable the first term, by a larger majority than any other candidate on either tick et, and was re-elected to the second term by a handsome majority from every ward in the Township. During his two terms as constable, he served the people as a faithful officer, fulfilling his sworn duty in every respect, to the satisfaction of the people and with credit to himself and party. He has so conducted the office that he has made a number of friends among all classes, who is ready to support him for Circuit Clerk, because they know of his ability and qualification to fill this office. Mr Robb has proven himself to be a warm friend to the colored and has never failed to give a helping hand to the poor and needy, through his salary has been very small. The republican party will have a strong candidate for this important office, one who is well educated, honest, competent and who has s.roug following eyes Township in the county.
