THE SEDALIA TIMES. Missouri State Fair, August, 18 to 23rd.in Sedalia, State Candidates. A short history of their past life, for the benifit of our readers. These are the Men who will help lead the Republican Party to Victory this-Look, read and consider. VOL. VIII The republican nominee for state superintender of Public School, was born at Ring's Creek, in Wayne county this state in September 1864. The night of his birth Price's army was camped at Patterson, close by, and straggling soldiers learning of his birth came to the house in search for his father, who was a Union man, but they failed to find him. Mr White spent his early manhood in the county of his birth, working on a farm and going to school in the fall. He taught school and saved the money derived therefrom, through his compensation was small, and expended those earnings in keeping himself in the state normal school at Cape Girardeau from which he graduated in 1895. The next day he was elected principle of the public school at Farmlington and Pacific, but accepted the place at Farmington. He remained there six years at a salary from $70 to $115 per month. Then he was elected principle of the California public school and remaining the about one year, and coming from there to St Louis, and remaining in that city for six years as superintendent of the public schools; From here he went to Brookfield and is now serving his fourth term there. He was the Republican nominee for county school commissioner in Sr Franccounty in 1899. The Democratic majority against which he had to contend was 1,050, but Mr White came within 125 of election. Mr. White is a graduate from the Missouri state normal school; has taken special work in the state university, Chicago university and Cook county normal school, has been an active member of the National Teachers Association since 1891, he was president of the southeast Missouri Teachers Association in 1890; was secretary of the State Teachers Association in 1898, was treasurer of Missouri School Journal Publishing Company from 1897 to 1902, and was president of the juntee-Normal Alumni Association for three years. Mr. White is a genial and companionable gentleman and will not dissipoint his friends who did such effective work to bring about his nomination. W. S. CRANE. W. S. Crane, the long-term nominee for Railroad commissionerselp, was born in Pike county, this state, in 1900 He was a mere strip of a boy when he moved to Newton county and soon after removed from there to Jasper county, where he live now. He has held one one public office, having served a term as sheriff of Jasper county. The first dollar he ever earned was by his own labor was at work as a miner, he continued in this employment for a number of years, and by economy and a fortunate investment or two which his savings permitted him to make, he has since been enable to retire, and from a mine worker has become a mine owner and operator. His early years were spent at hard manual labor, as were many of the years of his father's life. He enjoys the reputation of being a big-hearted man, who meets all appeals for charity with a ready response and is as ardent in espousing the cause of labor as he is active in promoting Republicanism. As home delagates was as absorbed in sounding his praise, making everything else, so far as it was concerned, secondary to his nomination. The Republican state convention made a winning selection in naming such man as him for this office, and no doubt will be elected by a handsome majority. BARNEY FRAUENTHAL Barney Fraunenthal, the short-term nominee for the railroad commissioner, SEDALIA, MISSOURI SATURDAY JULY 12 1902 is a Pennsylvanian by birth. He is now 37 years old. He has lived in Missouri twenty-five years and nerry all of this he has been employed at Union depot in St Louis. He began work as a telegrapher and continued in that way until the present Union Station was opened, when he was placed in the bureau of information. He is a married man and has a good family with three children. He has always taken a leading part in the republican battles in the city rf St Louis and in state affairs, and will certainly make a winning campaign for the office of the republican party has trusted in his oare. M. B. H. Constable James Robb. Who is now making a strong fight for the nomination of Circuit Clerk among the republicans. Republican County Convention. The Republicans of Pett's county will hold a delegate convention in the criminal court room in Sedalia, Mo, at 11 o'clock a m Thursday, Aug. 14, 1902, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the various towship and county offices to be voted upon at the coming general election in November next, and for choosing a new county central committee and for transacting such other business as may come before the convention. the republican voters in each township in Pett's county, except Sedalla township are therefore requested to meet in caucus at the usual voting places in said township at 2 o'clock p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 1902, for the purpose of choosing delegates to said convention, nominating your candidates for township offices and selecting your member of the county committee. Rev Coieman and others, will hold a big celebration California Aug 4th. The colored people of Clinton will celebrate Aug 4th Dr J. WILL JACKSON, DD HIGHLY HONORED Dr J. Will Jackson, whoes home is in this city, has been elected as a represer- tive to represent the Missouri District Epworth League and Sunday Schools at the Negro Young Peoples Christain and Educational Congress, which mets in Atlanta Ga. August 6 and continue to August 11th. It is said that this meeting will be the greatest ever held by the Negroes. 10,000 delegates are expected to attend. Dr Jackson has also been selected as a delegate to attend the Missionary Mission of the Methodist Epistol- pal church which will he held at Cleveland Ohio, Oct 21 to 24 enclusively. *Miss Viola Jackson his youngest daugh ter has been invited to render several of he famous vocal solos at each of these noted gatherings, and will proberly attend should her health permit her. She is an excellent' singer and is recognized as one of the best among the race. QUARTERLY MEETING. The A. M. What Heard on the Street concerning local Politics There are a number of men who would like to be candidates for different offices but will not patronize party papers because it costs a trifle, while they are the only solid support they have. Some people have an idea that no other man should announce for the same office that he does, but that is wrong. They must remember that the people say who shall and shall not be elected to office. When a candidate seeks the nomination without the support of the press he has an up-hill fight, as the press is the power behind the throne. E. E. Codding is studying over the matter of running for circuit clerk. S. M. Hodges is said to be a candidate for circuit clerk against R. H. Gray. This shows a split in the democratic ranks. Capt. W. H. Masen has out cards announcing himself as a candidate for constable. It is said that Samuel Bowser will have a some opposition id the convention for sheriff. R. N. Tower has a snap on 'tee nomination for county clerk, but wheeher he have a snap on election is hard to say. The announcements of R. H Gray and T P Berry appears in this paper this week, [Recorder Looney will present himself next week to the colored voters Some of the boys has not forgot what was said about a Negro as janitor of the court house four years age, and some one feel the results of it in the convention or at the polls in November next It is said that Col Jno D Crawford and James Ringen may be candidates for Presiding Judge. Gray who is asking for the Democratic nomination for county Clerk. Mr Gray is well and favorably known in all parts of Pettis county, and has many friends and supporters among the colored voters of this county. He treats all patrons of his office alike; and extends the same courtious treatment to a poor man that he does to the rich. Many of our colored people who have had trouble with their deeds and taxes, who have gore to Mr. Gray for help, and are sound in their praise of the splendid treatment accorded them at his hands. Mr. Gray gives his personal attention to the duties of it is office, and has made a good county clerk, with a record that surpasses all predecessors. He is running the office with only one deputy and at less expense than any former county clerk in the past twenty five years, and has turned back into the county treasury over a $1000 each year from the earning os said office. Mr Gray is a stron man for his party ticked, and the chances are very favorable that the people will give him a second term in token of his spendid record as clerk. Captain Campbell of St. Louis, who was elected as committee at-large is a gentleman and is well thought off by all who know him, he will make a good representative if he dont let jealousy and pregudice run away with his brain. L. Davis of Sedalia Btues will take his team to Kansas City Sunday to play the Bradbury team of that city. We hope that the boys will put up a better game there than the one held here, if a change is made in the in-field and the boys avoid so many errors, they will have a right to shut the Bradbery's, but if they dont the result will! When you find a democrat who is opposed to announcing to the colored people through their race paper, because it is a republican sheet, you may just put your foot down on him as one of those men who figures on buying the Negro voters on election day, and you will find nine out of every ten of them, who has no use for the as a voter only when he can buy his vote to put himself in office, the same can be truthfully said of a few of our so-called republicans The republican Judicial convention will be held in Joplen on the 15th, next week, in which the Pettis county people will go there to nominate Hon Henry Lamm. of this city a Judge of tee Supreme court.
