Lamm, Whybark and Higbee.
For State Supreme Conrt.
Edward C. Eliot For Court of Appeais.
REPUBLICAN JUDICIAL CONVENTION.
The Republican judicial convention at Joplin acted wisely in almost every particular. The three men who were nominated are widely known and popular citizens says the Kansas City Journal, and conspicuously able jurists. Mr. Lamm has long been one of the leaders of the Pettis county bar. Mr. Higbee was one of the Republican candidates for the supreme court two years ago and is a strong man. He made a good race before and was entitled to a renomination when the chances of success were better. Mr. Whybark is a prominent lawyer of St. Francois county and entered the convention with the united support of the delegates from his section. Besides choosing popular and capable men the convention distributed its nominations well from a geographical point of view. Mr. Higbee lives in Schuyler county, on the northern boundary of the state: Mr. Lamm in Pettis county in the central portion and Mr. Whybark in St. Francois county an the eastern border and far toward the southern extremity.
But little politics was injected into the proceedings as became a judicial convention. The Philadelphia and Jefferson City platforms were briefly endorsed. The rest of the short platform adopted goals with matters directly pertaining to the administration of justice. It must be considered as exceedingly unfortunate that it should be found necessary at any time to drag so high a tribunal as the supreme court in to the arena of politics. The members of no party are less pstone than republicans to do this under ordinary circumstances. But extraordinary circumstances exist in Missouri. The court, by making itself subservient to the democratic machine and rendering partisan decisions in conformity with machine dictates has helped deprive voters of the right to a free ballot and a fair count.
It was proper that a convention nominate candidates for this court should take public cognizance of these facts. This the republican convention did by pledging that its nominees if elected "will faithfully discharge the duties of the judges of that high court, and that they will support the constitution of the United States and state of Missouri and will properly demean them selves in every particular serving the interests and proticting the rights of the people according to law without fear of any faction, corporation or person." A stinging rebuke was administered to the supreme court in the concluding sentence of the resolution: "We stand for and indorse the section of the constitution of the state of Missouri which guar antees that in all cases of contested elections the bailiots cast 'may be examined and compared with the list of legal voters, under such safeguards and regulations as may be provided by law, the supreme court of the state of Missouri to the contrary notwithstanding.'"
the republicans of the state now have all their candidates in the field. The preliminaries of the campaign will be completed when the democrats nominate their state ticket at St Joseph. The republicans have nominated strong candidates for all offices. They have also adopted platforms which fairly state the issues of the campaign from their standpoint. They commence the battle with apparently good grounds for their hope of trinmphing.

NEGROE3 SAVED THE EXPOSI TION.
It might serve as a hint or note of warning to let the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Co. know that when the directors of the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition lost all hope in the financial success of their project the Negro came to the rescue and filled the buildings to overflowing. The buildings were not able to hold the Negroes on Negro Military day. The Crescent Inn was jammed with Negroes who went there to show their interest in a home enterprise. In the World's fair here give the Negro where to stand and he will appear in great shape also.

the honor bestowed upon them The nomination for judge of court of Appeals went to Edward O Eliot, of St Louis, and here again the choice will be received with general gratification by the public and the best elements of the legal profession.
Among our list of announcements will be found the card of Mr R N. Lower, who is a republican candidate for County Clerk. Mr Lower is no stranger to the people of Sedalia and Pettis county, nor is he a stranger the colored voters therof, he having served the people for one term as county clerk, and has come in contact with all the people, personally and through business, makes him well acquainted and a strong candidate During his term as county clerk, it can be truthfully said by all who visited his office, that he made a noble clerk, one who so well proformed his duty and who treated his patronage with such gratitude that he is now being endorsed and commented by a host of democrats all over the county. Mr Lower is a friend to the colored people, he proved it while in office and while out, on the farm as well as in the city. He is highly by all Sedalians and unamously endorsed by all Pettis county farmers as the right man for the right place. When the convention gives to him this nomination which they certainly will ne will see to it that his election is assured by a large majority.
We take great pleasure in presenting to our many colored readers the announcement of Mr. Louis Kahrs, who is a republican candidate for Constable of Sedalia Township. We need not attempt to explain his republicanism nor his loyalty to the party, because he who know him can and will say that he has been much serve to the party. He was elected sometimes ago to the office of city Marshal and he made such good officer that the people regard less of their politics gave him a second term. He has a host of colored friends who would please

The Sedalia colored band is contemplating playing out of town on August 4th, on the grounds that they cannot make arrangements with the home committee who is now soliciting funds for this purpose. The Great, Western Band of St Louis has been employed to play here during the day at the Sedalia merchants expenses, and bulk of the other money goes to outsiders, and the Sedaliaus goes way back and help feed the crow, does the merchants and business who are given their dollars to help the celebration see where they are helping the Sedalia Negro who spends his earnings in this town every day in the year, when he is giving it to outsiders.
Two of our proud young ladies spent several days during this week parading the streets bycicle riding. While bycicle riding is no disgrace to ladies, yet they should arrange themselves so as to not be a show on the streets, these ladies seem to not care for the wind blowing or the lightness of their costume, but continued to parade Maln and Chio streets, and men gathered in large crowds on the corners and in front of pool rooms for sigh seeing as they passed by. It has been reported to us that these ladies accompanied with two others spent Thursday evening at the brewery drinking common beer. Now does these proud young ladies think that they are following up what they claim to be, and they think that they are holking up the on-ton society of which they claim to represent. If they do they are badly mistaken. as true society ladies do not indulge in such pleasure and sport at such extent.
The republican nominations made Tuesday are up to the highest standard and thoroughly satisfactory in every respect. They are nominations to which every republican can point with pride and which every citizen of Missouri can support with the firmest assurance that these candidates, if elected, will constue the constitution and the laws justly in the interest of all citizens, with absolute disregard to partism consideration The various sections of the state are equally represented. Edward Higbee, of Schuyler county, is a leading lawyer in northern Missouri Henry Lamm, of Sedalia, is a distinguished member of the bar in Centrel Missouri, and Moses Why bark, of Bollinger county, is one of the foremost lawyers of the southeast section of the state. In character and attainments these candidates are entirely worthy of

**Gentleman** :— Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you full history of my case, to be used at your discretion.
About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this car entirely.
I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever.
Then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and today, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you carefully and beg to remain
Very truly yours,

Short Talks On Advertising ByCharles Austin Bates.
It isn't so much what you say as where you say it. Put a preacher on a desert island and what he says will not have much effect. If he is in the pulpit, talking to 500 intelligent people, his words will have weight. They will do some good.
What you say in an advertisement, and how you say it, doesn't matter nearly so much as where it is said.
THE WORLD'S FIRST MAN
You might have the most attractive advertisement that was ever designed, offering the biggest bargains that ever were offered, and if you put it down cellar under the coal it would never sell a cent's worth of goods.
A poorly written advertisement, poorly displayed, in a good newspaper will do some good. Of course, a better advertisement would do more good, but the style of the advertisement must be thought of
after the medium has been selected.
When you put your ad in the best newspaper in your community you are addressing the wideawake, progressive part of the community. You are skimming the cream. It is safe to say that nobody whose trade is worth much will fail to be a subscriber to a daily newspaper. Generally speaking, the best newspaper will attract the best people—the intelligent people—the people who have money in their pockets to buy what they want and need.
Do not preach on a desert island. If you should climb into the pulpit of your best newspaper

The people who get these things up are often perfectly honest in their intentions. They may honestly believe that their advertising is worth something. On the other hand, there are some who know that what they are selling has no commercial value. These things are quite frequently a mild sort of blackmail—sometimes they are not so mild. Sometimes a solicitor for a labor programme, for instance, insinuates more or less plainly that unless
the advertisement is taken the merchant refusing will be blacklisted, or boycotted, by the union. There is very little doubt that these solicitors are overstepping their authority, and that the intelligent and reasonable members of the union they misrepresent

would not countenance these methods.
Business men all say that such things are an annoyance and that they don't pay, but only here and the necessary thing to do.
Money should not be all. The be account for whatever he advertising.

here and there is one who has the necessary nerve to refuse to have anything to do with them.
Money paid for such things should not be charged to advertising at all. The bookkeeper should open an account for charity or blackmail or whatever he chooses, so long as it isn't advertising.
A safe rule to go by is, never put an advertisement into anything where you cannot trace a direct result. When somebody tells you that it is impossible to trace results tell them they are mistaken. If you put your ad in a good newspaper you can tell exactly what brings you if you try.
