THE SEDAL The Atlanta Congress and Observations. From J. WILL JAGKSON, DD Since my return from the Atlanta Congress I have been importioned by several of my friends to give a little write-up of my trip and of the proceedings of that body. Through the obliging kindness of the editor of "THE SEDALIA TIMES" I am now given the opportunity to do so. The Trip To Atlanta. Left St Louis, August 2nd, at 9:10 p.m. with Louisville Ky., as my first objective point. I took the "Southern Railway route," I had never taken this route before, and my travel being confined to the darkness of the night, I was permitted to see but little of the country traversed. We reached Louisville Sunday morning, at 7:25 o'clock. I had never visited the city before, and was, therefore, a stranger in a strange land. A comfortable place for my entertainment during the day and night, was found with but little difficulty, I breakfasted and, after a little rest, started out to hunt up the churches. In company with a young man, who kindly volunteered to act as my guide, we found the residence of Hon. N. R. Harper, attorney and Councelorate of Law. whom I had known in Ohio, my native State, 33 years ago. At that time he was my music teacher. The meeting was a most agreeable one, and, excusing my young friend from further favors, I spent the day with my old friend and his family, upon his earliest solicitation. Mr Harper is the most noted Negro lawyer in the state of Kentucky, and the first of his race to be admitted to the bar in that state, about 35 years ago. We spent the day together in attending church and seeing the sights of the city. We took the hand of parting late in the evening of that day, after having spent one of the most agreeable Nabbaths of my life. At 7:25 Monday morning we took the train for Atlanta, Ga., the seat of the great Negro congress. It was on the Queen and Crescent route, one of fastest lines in the country. Here, in my journey began my experience with the "Jim Crow Car" arrangement. I saw nothing worthy of commendation. Of the legislation which establishes the separate car system which now prevails throughout the South, I would have nothing objectionable to say, if it be true, as I have been informed, that the two races could not agreeably travel together. Common carriers on the highways of travel are certainly the common property of all and should be enjoyed by all alike. And yet it is true that conditions may exist which prevent their peaceful possession by all who are entitled to them. The fault of the system lies, not so much with the legislation as with the provisions which the railroads adopt to carry out the legislation. If the accommodation for both races was both the same there would be no room complaint, but such it not the ease. There is nothing in common between the "Jim Crow car" and the car allotted to the white passengers, except that they belong that they belong to the same train and all of them run on wheels. The former is often the commonest kind of a hull, not clean beyond the discovery of the need of better treatment, while the latter is modern in all of its appointments and a model of cleanliness and comfort. The "Jtm Crow car" is a partitioned car in most oases one part being for both sexes of the race while the other is for smokers. But it is quite frequent that no such accommodations are found, for often the part assigned to the Negroes is less than half of car. The car we took here was partitioned into halves and for most of the distance from Louisville to Lawrenceburg, Ky., was uncomfortably crowded in both compartments by men, women and children At Lawrenceburg we changed cars for Burgin, Ky. It is indeed hard to conceive of accommodations fitted up for human beings, less comfortable or more disagreeable than those which awaited us SEDALIA MISSOURI SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13 at this place. Our car was a detachment or partition of the regular baggage car. It contained 7 seats, 3 on one side and 4 on the other, literally glossed with dirt. The floor was unclean and the windows could scarcely be seen through. A rusty old stove and dirty lamps were piled up in one corner. It was about one-fourth the whole car in size, and was crowded with passengers. A door opened out of it into the baggage apartment and this was open all the time, because the door was obstructed by boards or lumber which extended out of the baggage apartment into ours. The offensive odor from chicken coops in the baggage apartmeet was repulsive and sickening to endure. This is a true picture of the "Jim Crow car. I was told that similar recommendations for the Negroes under the separate car system is frequently found throughout the south. No being, possessed of human instincts could be subjected to such environments without experiencing the most intense feeling of disgust and humiliation. Were I not human I would be submissively silent and uncomplaining. Humanity instinctively revolts at and recoils from such surroundings. If the Negro race of this country is to be elevated—fitted for usefulness, pure homes and intelligent citizenship the "Jim Crow car" as now managed in the south can never serve as a contributing factor to these ends. I find no fault as I have already said with the legislation that separates the races. Conditions no doubt make the separation a necessity. But I do complain against the provisions which the railroad companies too frequently adopt to carry out the requirements of the law. There may be honorable exceptions to what came under my observations. If so these exceptions should be the general rule not the reverse. I must here pay an honest tribute of praise to the conductors whom I met on my trip. A more polite and obliging and set of men I never met in any capacity of life. One becomes oblivious to much of his upleasant surroundings under such kindly treatment. All through the long journey, in busy streets or crowded stations not an insulting remark was heard or an affront of any kind offered. The Congress The Negro Young People's Christian and Educational congress which convened in Atlanta on the 6th and adjournthe uight of the 11th fs a thing of the past. It marks an epoch in the history of the race in this country—an epoch of fraternity and fellowship in christian and educational work. It was the outgrowth of a conviction that has gradually possessed the leaders of race that there is need of a closer union and co-operation of all the forces that are in operation for the uplift of the people. It makes true progress. It takes a people some time to reach this eminence of philosophical reflection. The first impulses of freedom and experimental education are those of selfishness and bigotry. True education reinforced by the lessons of experience, imparts a view of life that comprehends the efficacy and utility of all agencies in reformrition and preparation. It abolishes bigotry and intolerance. It has taken the race some time to reach this consideration, but, happily it is surely and firmly grasping it, ae was shown by the great gathering at Atlanta. Over 6coo delegates were present, coming from 20 different states in the Union. Forty different religious demominations and christian agencies were represented. It was without doubt the greatest gathering of its kind in the history of the race. Never before were there gathered such an array of varied talent of the Negro people. The brilliant orator, the poet, the elocutcnist the musician, the vocal soloist, lawyer, doctor, mechanic and the rest of them were all there. The rendition of music and song, as was given in the two great concerts of the congress was the finest the race ever produced. What the Congress Was Not The congress was not in any sense a liberalative body. There were no debates, no motions made, no obtaining the floor no parliamentary usage to settle in any of its public assemblages. It was not in any sense a political body. Partisan politics was not touched upon or mentioned. It was thought by the originators of the congress, and I think wisely, too, that the injection of politics into such a gathering would do more harm than good. It was rather a discussive body. There were 100 speakers, to each of whom a topic had been previously assigned. These topics covered every phase of christian, educational and economic work affecting the interests and welfare of the race. Each speech was limited to a certain number of minutes. The results of this meeting will embody: 1st. The molding of a sentiment more favorable to the Negro throughout the country. He will be better thought of, and his efforts at self elevation or helpfulness will be appreciated by the country at large. 2nd. It will bring about a better state of feeling between the various religions and agencies of the race and unite them more in christian and educational work. This is greatly needed, and 3rd. It will direct attention and support, to the religious and educational forces as being the essentials of true progress and the fundamentals of our national peace and prosperity. This conference will convene in this city September 24th THE A.M.E. CONFERENCE. The pastor and members of Quinn chapel are hard at work getting everything in order. This conference will bring about 150 Negro preachers, among whom will be found some of the best brain of the race, such men as Bishop C. T. Shaffer of Philadelphia. Dr. G. W. Taylor of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. H. B. Parks of New York, Dr. Chappell of Nashville, Tenn., Dr. D. P. Roberts of St. Louis, and many others. During the week of conference there will be anywhere from 1500 to 2000 strangers in the city. Arrangements are being made to bring excursions from Kansas City and Moberly. These people must be cared for in befitting style. The pastor is gratified to some of the leading citizenes of our race who have thrown open their doors to the conference and the many visitors who will be here. Yet there is much to be done. Every person in Sedalia should contribute liberally for this cause. You should not wait for the pastor to call on you, but offer your services or donate something as your part of the work. People used to say: "Oh, I never pay any attention to advertisements; they never tell the truth." Now it's different; people do read advertisements and they believe them. Advertisers are becoming more careful and more scrupulously truthful every day. I know a firm of advertising agents who also own a medicated soap. I said: "Is it really such a wonderful thing, and do you take the care you say you do in making it?" The answer was: "Of course it is a good thing. We have seen too much of advertising to be fools enough to spend money pushing a poor article." Most all advertisers understand this nowadays, and that is why advertising pays better than it used to. The answer was : "The answer was." "Of course it is a good thing. We have seen too much of advertising to be fools enough to spend money pushing a poor article." Most all advertisers understand this nowadays, and that is why advertising pays better than it used to. The best place to put an advertisement is in The best place to put an advertisement is in the paper that enjoys the confidence of the community. I believe that the standing of the paper reflects on the advertisements it carries. There is another thought which never occurred to me, but which was conveyed in a remark recently made to me by Mr. M. M. Gillam, the advertising manager at Wanamaker's. He said: EDITORIALS "A sleepy paper gathers a sleepy constituency. An alert, wideawake, progressive sheet gets readers who like that sort of thing—or lifts them to its level." Wideawake people are the ones most influenced by advertising—progressive people who are not afraid of a new thing or a new idea; people who believe in the paper they read because they have learned to rely on it. Depend upon this. If the editorials carry weight, the ads. will pay. Put your trust and your money in that sort of a paper. Occasionally an advertisement will fall flat. The wise man looks for the reason. He doesn't say blindly: "Advertising doesn't pay." He looks at the condition of general trade, at the weather, at the goods and the price and the way the ad. was worded. This is certain: A readable ad. in a readable paper will be read. Probably not by all of the readers of the paper, but by a sufficient number to make the ad. pay, if the goods are right. No doubt about it whatever. It's as sure as sunshine. A cloudy day comes sometimes, but it doesn't stay long. 10 lbs "If the editorials carry any weight." FREE TO ALL! From Infancy To Age Mother and Child Laxakola for Babies.—It is the best and most effective remedy for children BEST because it is pure and safe being made entirely of humiless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never grips or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition. It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent catharics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fevers it is invaluable. A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhoea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation. "My baby is 4 months old and is teethiling. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and that I would never pull him through. If he were under the watchful eye, I would have given him a cool pill. If he were troubled with colic very much, and used to screen when he had a bout of it, I know what it was to close my eyes day or night. I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I it to him a few times, and it worked like a charm, and he my 27 years pretty fair all night. He is a great deal better than he was when he was given him LAXAKOLA, and I think he would not make nothing else to their sick babies." MRS.
