A WORD TO OUR
SUBSCRIBERS.
For the past three months we have been oalling, urging, soliciting and even pounding at our subscribers who are away back in their dues to the Times to pay up. In some places we have received their remittance, but others have paid nothing and will not answer. We even mailed a card in which they could pay up their dues in the small amount of only 50c, and yet no respond.

COLORED MAN BARRED.
What Mean White Americans.
It does seem hard for a young Afro-American youth, who is ambitious and eager to become a competitor with his white brother in sharing some of the blessings of life, for when we look at the recent actions that the many labor unions and other secret and political bodies have taken to suppress the colored laborer and prevent him from becoming a member of secret or political parties—simply because a man's skin is dark—he is ostracised. It is a shame, a snare, a gross injustice that he is thus treated. Why, last week the national association of stationary engineers, which met in Boston, voted to exclude colored engineers, notwithstanding the brave fight that Mr. Howard of Massa chusetts and Optenburg of Wisconsin, made for fair play and justice. Then in a certain southern state republican convention they excluded all colored delegates and would not admit them. And even last week in our city the Grand Sovereign Odd Fellows lodge, which held its annual session here amended the constitution so as to prevent [colored men] admis sion—will saymo (3)
It is indeed a shame that our country is coming to forget their duty of loyalty equality, justice and fraternity. Civilization cannot advance sunless all are given equal chance and opportunity in the race of life.—Bystander, Des Moines, Ia.
The Republic of this date contains an article entitled "How to Get Free Text Books." The correspondent says that I gave as the aggregate amount of all solvent notes, secured by mortgage or deeds of trust, the sum of $265, and pay taxes thereon. He also says that deeds of trust recorded in my name in Wayne county have an aggregate value of $3,744.

Short Talks On Advertising By Charles Austin Bates.
A little advertising like a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. A man who advertises a little bit and quits is sure to lose his money, and is sure to get erroneous ideas into his head.

The first advertising that is done is merely preparatory. It introduces the advertiser to his public; it gains acquaintance for him.
After a while he becomes so well known that in

You are deciding in your own mind what manner of a man he may be; what he does; what line of business he is in, and whether he is honest or not. Vote the straight Republican ticket just as printed, and you will make no mistake.
Luddie Umbles and Dora Jenning were arrested Thursday night charged with robbing a white con-
stable from Pilot Grove. Luddie was turned loss Friday, but Dora was hele under bond.
President Rooseville hit the big beef trust in the side and it has taken the eownward glide, he has pointed his figure at the coal trust and it is about to abey, thus you that he is president for all the people.
The candidates for Justice of the Peace on the republican ticket; namely Judges N. H. Rogers, J. Smith and T. P. Berry. are all aged men, honest and square, and deserves the support of the people.
Elect C. E. Messerly as Presiding Judge and Gabe Albers as Judge of Eastern District, and if some Negro is not appointed as janitor of the court-house, we will know the reason why.
This has been a bad week on the colored crap-shooters. as a large number of them has been arrested, charged with crap-seooting and made spend a day in jail. But when will those white crap-shooters spend their day in jail. Get them all men. get them all.
Whenever a man tells you that Mr. E. E Johnson, will get a Sedalia Negro a job at Jefferson City, you tell him he is talking through his hat, because Mr Johnson is a successful cloth dealer, he cannot get no Sedalia Negro any janitor's job in the state house at Jefferson City, and they can't fool the boys on that this year.
Little has been said concerning Mr Samuel Bowser, who is making a clean and gentlemanly race for Sheriff of Pettis county. We can say for Mr Bowser, that he is a perfect gentleman, and one who will make a good honest Sheriff. He deserves the support of every colored voter in the county, and believe if he is elected that the colored people will in him a friend at all times.
The Circuit Clerks office is another office in which the colored people must have a friend, and one who knows no man by the color of his face or the style of his clothes and one that is acknowledge by all as gentleman; thoroughly qualified to make the people of this county a creditable circuit clerk. The gentleman of which we shall ask the colored voters to cast their votes for is Mr C. W. Daughterty, one of Pettis county's own boys, and one that the people regardless of their color or wealth is proud off. Let the Negroes vote for him and do our party in electing him to this office.
When it comes to speaking of men who are real friends of the Negro, we can truthfully say that they never did have a better friend in or out of office than Mr R, N. Lower, who is republican nominee for County Clerk. The people of our city and county has had enoug dealing with him to know that he is an honest, upright and fair man, and believe in honest dealings with all mankind in business or in a political contest. No laboring man, white or black. can find a just cause to vote against him. No honest man can say that he has willfully wronged him while was in the County Clerk's office. Not one colored in Sedalia or Pettis county can truthfully say that Mr Lower, did not always teat him with the best respect and kindness anywhere met you. He has proven words and actions that is the Ne-
groes friend in office or out, in the city as well as in the county. He should receive your votes for this place, and less him this fail.
TO THE COLORED VOTERS OF PETTIS COUNTY.
Great pressure will be brought to bear by the state democratic election machinery to elect their representative from this county. They have sent out their agents to hustle up the Negro voters and purchase them if possible for this position, as it has been rumored on the streets. The question is now will the Negro allow himself to be hoodwinked by such machinery and persuaded to cast one vote against such a gentleman and statesman as J. H. Bothwell, who is acknowledged as one of the leading factors of the state. The Negroes of Sedalia and I ettis county never did and never will have a better friend in the house of representatives than Hon. J. H. Bothwell. While he was with the minority his influence ranked and balanced with those of the majority, for the people have always found in him a man. The Negroes of this county cannot afford to vote against him, for when they do they will have voted against their friend in Sedalia, in Pettis county, in the house of representatives, and a friend to them anywhere they meet him. What more can you expect or ask. So we ask you in the face of fairness and justice not to scratch out your friends for the sake of money influence today, for tomorrow you may need a friend's helping hand.
Many of the colored voters will reject and use all the enfluence they can against Mr Emmett McClure. who is the democratic candidate for re-election of County Collector, from the fact that he has not treated the Negro as a public office-holder should, he has treated cooler than any other man in the court house, he never helps a colored church or any Negro enterprises only at the eve of an election and he wants their votes.
He promises some of the colored boys two years ago if they would vote for him, he would prove to them that he was their friend, and from the count two years hense, some of them must have voted for him and he was elected. But did he prove to be their friend after his election? Has he contributed to help any of the Negro churches? No! Has he helped our newspapers in having tax notices published to the colored people? No! Has endorsed "any" Negro for any kind of a job? No! Has he proven to any Negro or set Negroes that he was their friend, in any thing he has said or done? No! Then will the colored voters of Sedalia cast votes for such a man, who has set down on everything that is for the building up of the Negro, because are not altogether of his political opinion. Let the few hundred Negro voters of Sedalia, vote for honest men. men who will your own race and men who knows your people the same after election the same as during campaign.

“The average ‘life of the nickel
cigar is five years,” said a prominent
| tobacco man to a writer for the New '
‘Orleans Times-Democrat, “and it,
is curidus to note the differences
which have enabled cigar men to ar-
| rive at this general average of the
five-cent cigar’s life. Many cigars
of this class run through along series
of years. There are some brands
| now that have been running for more
‘than a quarter of a century under
_ the same name, and they are really
\ the same cigars, made in the same
| way, having the same flavor and all
\ that sort ofthing. In thisconnection
| Lhave been impressed by the remark
| which we often hear about certain
| brands of cigars changing in quality.
| Eheard a man say the other day that
he had been smoking a certain brand
jofcigars for. two years or longer,
but that the cigar was getting so
bad that he had concluded to
anit buying it at all. ‘Tt is
nothing like the same cigar,’ he said;
‘the taste has changed, and it tastes
like a mixture of cabbage leaves’?
Now he was altogether wrong
about that. I know the cigar, know
how it is made and all about it, amd
I know that no sort of change has
| been made in the process of manufac-
| ture. The trouble is that man’s taste
changes. He may get tp feeling bad-
ly, his stomach may be in bad’shape,
[ss of course the cigar will not taste
as it did when his system was in bet-
iter condition. The cigar is blamed,
and he simply dashes the thing into
sie street, and quits buying it. In-
stances of this surt are very common,
Mind you I do not mean to say that
he of the brands do not change,
‘There are tricks in the cigar business,
just as there are tricks in other
trades. But in nine cases out of ten
the trouble is with the smoker. But
recurring to the age of cigars, the ay
erage to which I have referred has
been settled upon by tobacco men
and is accepted throughout the coun-
try. It is reached by taking the two
extremes, the good and the bad five
cent cigar, and fgaring back to the
middle. Some five cent cigars elose
with the first lot made. ‘They are
failures, having nothing in them to
necommend them to the public. The
material out of which they are made
would not make decent ‘three-fors,”
the kind that are sold to the negroes
on the river. The higher grades of
five cent cigars are made as careful-
ly, and with as much skill as the cigars
that are sold at a higher price, and I
do notmindsaying that many of them
are really far superior ‘in materi-
a, flavor and method of manufac-
ture. So many of them, however, are
of the cheap kind that the average is |
lowered to five years, while the aver-
age life of the higher priced cigars |
‘will run to a much higher figure.” |

Some Interesting Statements Concerning
Amount of Salt in the Sea.
Roughly speaking, says the Cin-
cinnati Commercial ‘Tribune, if you
take the salt out of the sea water, you
deprive it of a thirtieth of its
weight. On that basis one-thirtieth
of the entire weight of all the séa
water in the world is salt, and, as salt
and water bulk about the same.-we
may estimate, also, that, by bulk,
one-thirtieth of the huge mass of
the ocean is pure salt. What does

Beautiful Outwardly, But So Cantanker
ous That It Lived Alone.
There died at the aquarium re-
cently an angel fish that for year:
had had a tank all to itself. It dif
fered from the other angel fish exhib-
ited there also in the respect that i
lived unusually long in captivity,
says the New York Sun.
One reason why the angels are
hard to keep is their scrappiness
among themselves. The fight and
quarrel and wound one another with
the sharp spines with which theit
gill covers are armed.
‘This long-lived angel fish killed
two or three tank mates, or so wound-
ed them that they died of their in-
juries, and it continued to attack
other angel fish put. into the tank
with it, until finally, and because of
its great beauty, it was permitted to
occupy a tank by itself.
It was a vigorous, hardy fish, and
the brightest-colored fish the aquari-
um has ever had; and all angel fish
are beautiful. Some angel fish have
yellow tails. This one had a blue
tail with a yellow edge and the char-
acteristic angel fish blue of its body
was of the deepest and at the same
time the most livid and brilliant
blue. At times it seemed almost
luminous; it was a wonderful and
most beautiful blue.
Fighter as it was among its kind,
it was one of the tamest fish in the |
aquarium. It took food from the |
hand when it had been there two }
weeks, and was ready to take food
n that manner always thereafter. |
On the last day that it was fed
something so frightened the angel |
ish that it jumped out of the water
nd struck the wire screen over its |
ank with such violence as to in- |
lict a serious eut in its head. It
ad been in perfect health and con-
lition up to that time, but, suscep-
ible as all fishes are to fright and
hock, this was too much for it, and
n the following two days it went
hrough a familiar course.
Sometimes it would rush about,

From Infancy To Age
Laxakola for Babies.—It is the best and most effective remedy for children BEST because it is pure and safe being made entirely of harmless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never grips or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition.
It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent cathartics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fevers it is invaluable.
A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation.
"My baby is 4 months old and its teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and I had not ever pull him through. I was told that I should wear a mask, but I stopped putting him on a mask. He could not sit on his stomach. He was troubled with colic very much, and used to scream when he had a tonic of it. I did not know what it was to close my eyes day or night. I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few times, and it worked like a charm, and he no longer rests really well. I gave it a great deal better looking baby since I gave him LAXAKOLA, and I think if it was good it would be, they would give nothing else to their sick babies."
MRS. MARY DALEY, 597 First Street, South Boston, Mass.
Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable.
When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing.
Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results.
It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up.
Laxakola for Mothers. It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals.
It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause.
To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.
What Mrs. Ely, Pugh, K. Palatine, O, Nov 125, says about LAXAKOLA. "March 11, 1901. Received your free sample, it has done so much well, send me a 50c. bottle." March 28, "Bottle came sale, did me a lot of good, drugstreet here don't keep it, so enclosed is 50c. please send me quickly another bottle. The last bottle did me so much good I want another at once." April 6th, "Enclosed is 50c. for one more bottle LAXAKOLA. It has done me much good."
Laxakola for Old Folks.-In the Autumn and Winter of Life, when the various organs through long years of action have become more or less sluggish, it becomes necessary to stimulate them by some remedy best adapted to that purpose. So long as the stomach and bowels are doing their work properly and the liver and kidneys are active and strong, your food is assimilated properly, your blood is kept pure and rich, and your nerves are strong. The feeling of nervousness, general weakness and debility means that the whole system is run down and needs a general toning up.
That LAXAKOLA DOES IT, has been proved beyond all question. Its gentle warming, soothing action on the bowels, liver and kidneys, stimulates them to increased activity, cleanses the blood, quickens the circulation, and puts the whole system in a condition of health and enables it to ward off disease, while its tonic properties tone up the system and keep it healthy.
Laxakola Does It.
Pale, Weak, Rm-down, Overworked Mothers with Fretty Children, half sick, nervous, tired one with household and juvenile liver torpid, with bloated, muddy, sallow complexions, blood thin and impure, need building up and a thorough renovation of the system. Weak, sore, such as a nerve and stomach build as LAXAKOLA, the great tonic laxative. It
gently moves the bowels and chus removes the cause, acts directly upon the liver and kidneys, keeping them active and strong, while its marvellous tonic properties clear the complexion, stimulate the liver, quicken the circulation, increase the flesh and brighten the eye; the nervousness speedily disappears and the entire system recuperates and tones up to a condition of perfect and permanent health. LAXANOL, is a gentle and safe reliever of the conditions of the liver and kidneys, increases their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic, and is invaluable in assisting to relieve obstructions which otherwise would lead to more or less severe pain or illness.
WHAT IS LAXAKOLA?
It is a gentle, vainless and harmless laxative. It is a wonderful, thorough medicine. It is a general builder of health and strength. It is a general remedy for all troubles arising from the bowels, stomach, liver or kidneys. It moves the bowels gently and painlessly, tones up and strengthens the mucous membranes of the stomach and removes the cause of troubles of the liver, kidneys and blood.
A Spoonful of Laxkola, Nightly on Retiring, will Cleanse the System of All Impurities; Stimulate the Liver; Clean out the Kidneys; Quicken the Circulation; Outlet the Nerves. Prevent Sleeplessness and Speedily Cause a Healthy Condition of the Entire Body.
Isn't it Worth 25c. To Be Cured of Constipation
People who suffer from habitual constipation with all its attendant tills, clogged stomach and bowels, sluggish liver, heartburn, indigestion, and thin and impure blood, are too apt to believe that the only remedy is violent purgatives. Such cathartics are irritating and gripping, leave the stomach empty, and cause further constipation. A laxative that moves the bowels without pain or gripping, cleanses the stomach, sharpsets the liver, strengthens the nerves, and purifies the blood, while its marvelous tonic properties tone up the entire system and keep it healthy.
Its remarkable tonic properties reach every organ—the liver, kidneys and stomach, nerve, heart and brain—and removes the cause of debilitation. It is also known for its ability to secure an absolute and permanent cure. In order that all may test this great curative, a free sample will be mailed to all.

Short Talks On Advertising By Charles Austin Bates.
Farming is generally looked upon as a very occupation. A farmer is considered an indepen individual, because his business is safe and ple Probably the most enviable feature is its safety. Farmers are nearly sure of making something. They make more some years than others, but on the whole it is a safe business. Just the same, we hear of farmers failing and of the foreclosure of farm mortgages. This is because the farmer didn't attend to his business properly.
s
Advertising is just as safe, and a great deal more profitable, than farming, but there are people who fail at it. A farmer has first to look for a rich and fertile field-so has the advertiser. The field must then be cultivated and the seed planted-so must advertising be planted.
"Farming is generally looked upon as a very simple occupation."
The farmer must take care of his crop, keep the weeds down, keep the ground properly fertilized and irrigated, and the advertiser must perform corresponding offices for his advertisements.
FORECLOSURE
FARM
MORTGAGES
If he plants an ad in a poor paper, where the soil is not good, he cannot expect to get much of a crop of returns. If he plants it in a good paper and allows it to run to seed he cannot expect very much.
If the farmer and the advertiser will both select good soil, it, and take care of the sprouts, be satisfactory in both cases.
Just the same, we hear of foreclosure of farm mortgages."
If the farmer and the advertiser will both select good soil, put good seed into it, and take care of the sprouts, the harvest is sure to be satisfactory in both cases.

BALTIMORE, Md., March 30, 1901.
Gentlemen: — Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion.
About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing. I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever.
Then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after my hearing in the affected ear has been entirely restored, I thank you heartily and beg to remain
