THE
ROOSEVELT OPPOSE THE LILY WHITES.
In a report of a recent consultation with President Roosevelt by Lishop Walters and Clinton and Rev. L. L. Carruthers of New York, we have assurance that the President does not encourage or sympatize with action of the "Lily White" republican managers of North Carrilina and Alabama in their efforts to exclude the Negro Republicans from participation in the preliminaries of party politics and management. The President reffered, very appropriately to his actions in all matters affectiff the race as an answer sufficiently positive to quit any suspicious and said, that in appointments the character and iateltgence of the applicant would be the first consideration, and that no man would be excluen or appointed because of his color. He disapproved, with his accustomed vigor, the efforts of certain Republicans in the South to exclude the Negro from taking a part in politics. While it was wise, in view of the next election, to get some direct expression from the President on the matter, yet, nevertheless, there was no oause or reason to doubt his position on the Negro question. The highest federal places, in a number of states, within his gift were given to Negroes and that, too, in face of the bitterest objection of Democrats and cringing "lilly whste Republicann,
Our strenuous President has the courage of his convictions and, is also too much of a philosopher to attempt to revive the efface Republicanism of the South by the means of race exclusion.
He recognizes that no other element of the American population in the South is more valiant and loyal in war or more use, ful and order-loving in peace, Kike the Jew-baiters of Austria, Roumania and France, parties that made race an issue must finally succeed), disappear, become issueless or detestible. Neither religion or race is a safe issue upon which parties can divide. History is full of massacres, burnings and lynching, caused by race feelings and religious differences.
A terrible race war is raging in the South with spectacles of barbarity for which the inhumanities of Turkey, the "Horsors of San Domingo" or the perfidies of Spain in her conquest to South America afford no equal. A few pig-headed craven Republicans, calling themelves lily white Republicans whose only purpose in organization is the spills of office, are adding fuel to the flame, and they opine that the people of the great nation and the people of the great North will support them "I the devil and the deep sea seem to be either of the horns of the Negro dilemma, unless the Presideat and the great North lay hands upon the South and tell it to stop this barbarous race war in the interest of humanity and the good name of our nation.—Ex.

Judge Longan did the right thing, and he added another feather in his cap, when he placed E H Shaw's bond from $5000 to $20.000 for raping little Hellena Arnold, a 11 year old colored girl. Of course he couldn't get no bondmen and he is now in jail pending on what his next sentence will be.
The colored girl who was charged with cutting a policeman with a pocket-knife and making only a little scratch on his leg after she had been struck twist with his club, was given five years by a
jury here Tuesday. Wonder if these were not some of the same men that were on the Farris-King case, their decesions were about the same.
The attention of the next legislature should be called to the fact that no provision has been made for Negro girls at Chillicothe, Mo. This is a state institution supported by the t-x-payers of all classes. Yet when a colored girl was recently sentenced to be placed in that institution, she was refused admittance because 'no provision had been made for Negroes.
Governor Dockery has appointed Hon. J, H. Bothwell a member of the auditing committee, to go over the hooks of the auditor and treasurer of the state, and see that the annual settlements are in proper form. The friends of Hon. J. H. Once in a while some business man, by advertising in programmes, souvenirs and various other schemes, determines that "advertising doesn't pay," and forthwith begins to preach this doctrine. Several thousand years ago, a gentleman named AEsop told a little story that has a distinct application right here:
"A fox was once caught in a trap by his tail, and, in order to get away, was forced to leave it behind. Knowing that without a tail he would be a laughing-stock for all his fellows, he resolved to try to induce them to part with theirs. So at the next assembly of foxes, he made a speech on the unprofitableness of tails in general, and the inconvenience of a fox's tail in particular, adding that he had never felt so easy as he had since he had given up his own. When he sat down, a sly old fellow rose, and waving his long brush with a graceful air, said with a sneer, that if, like the last speaker.
he had lost his tail, nothing further would have been needed to convince him; and till such an accident should happen, he should certainly vote in favor of tails."
Pick out the largest users of newspaper space, and you will find that they are the smallest users of space in extraneous media. You will not find among them a single one who is not firmly convinced that advertising does pay. The more a man spends for newspaper advertising the more positive he is in his belief in the results that it brings.

The X-Ray Can Be Relicd On with
Absolute Certainty in Making
the Test.
In detecting a false gem from a gen-
uine, the X-ray, says an article on
X-ray photography, in Leslie's
Monthly, can be relied on with abso-
jute certainty. Diamonds, as is well
known, are pure carbon; and carbon,
which is opaque to ordinary light, is
transparent to the Roentgen light,
while glass, which is transparent to
ordinary light, is opaque to the Roent-
gen ray. On an X-ray photograph
of a real diamond nothing will show
but the shadow of the gold setting.
‘An interesting experiment was made’
recently: in watching with the aid of an
X-ray machine and a fluoroscope, mo-
tions carried on inside of an opaque
body. A goose was fed with food
mixed with subnitrate of bismuth salt,
which absorbs the X-ray. The pas-
sage of the food down the long neck
of the goose could be plainly traced
by the moving shadow cast on the
fluoroscope sereen.

The farmers of Walla Walla county, Wash., are laying their roads with straw. Every fall the highways become deep with dust, making traveling hard on man and beast. Heavy rains meant mud, and the dust could not be removed without destroying the roadway. It then occurred to an enterprising individual that if all of the farmers would contribute straw, and all hands assist in laying it on the roads most traveled, there would be a great change for the better. The experiment was a decided success.

CONCERNING POSTAGE STAMPS
The two-pound rose-red of Rhodesia, 1890 issue, catalogues $30 in Sixtieth edition, is selling by London dealers at $11.50, and can be bought of the British South Africa company, in London, for face value—$9.74.
A Melbourne paper announces that the £2 Victoria, long promised, has at last been issued. The stamp will not be used in appreciable quantities by the public, but it will, however, serve a useful purpose, when affixed to documents covering the issue of an equivalent number of circulars or papers, which will then only have to be branded: "Paid at Melbourne," instead of having stamps affixed to each one of them.
While the descriptions of counterfeits in the philatelic press have an admitted instructive value, yet it is known that they do not have so great an influence as is sometimes supposed. It seems that the average collector is not a stamp student who revels in the comparison of minute details—he does not take the time if he has it. He buys from reliable dealers and he feels safe in trusting to their knowledge. If at any time they are at fault and sell him a forgery, he knows that he will suffer no loss, but have his money or its equivalent refunded.
The poor results attained in the printing of the new British stamps have led to the suggestion that the authorities in England make inquiries anew as to the relative merits and practicability of the two methods of stamp printing, surface and recess. Years ago, in England, the line engraving process was discarded in favor of typography, but the argument is now advanced that the successful application of steam printing to line-engraved plates (all the old British line-engraved stamps were hand-printed) has equalized the comparative cost of the process, and since the authorities seem to have given up the exclusive use of doubly fugitive colors—the washy purple and green—the arguments of the De La Rue, surface-printing, party have been sadly weakened.
VARIOUS MATTERS.
Georgia fruit growers are claiming that the peach crop of their state yields more money to the producers than does the cotton crop.
The two American cities in which the number of colored inhabitants is increasing most largely are Washington and Philadelphia.
The registration of voters, except such as become of age between August 1 and election day in November, is now complete in Alabama, and it foots up 183,500, of whom 183,000 are white.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier has described the United States as a "gigantic furnace." The London Express says that he thus retaliates on the Yankees, who would have the world believe that Canada is gigantic refrigerator.

It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent cathartics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON’t DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fever it is invaluable.
A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation.
My baby is 4 months old and is teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and I pulled him through the door when he were unwell. He was very much tired, and I spattyly fled him with a scowl. He was troubled with colic very much, and to screen when he had a touch of it, I knew what it was to close my eyes day or night. I lave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few times, and it worked a charm, and he no longer had any trouble looking baby since he was with him LAXAKOLA, and I think if the others knew how good it was, they would give nothing else to that sick baby.
MRS. MARY DALEY, 597 First Street, South Boston, Mass.
Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable.
When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing.
Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results.
It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up.
Laxakola for Mothers.—It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient lexative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals.
It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause.
To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.

Lazakola for Old Folks.—In the Autumn and Winter of Life, when the various organs through long years of action have become more or less sluggish, it becomes necessary to stimulate them by some remedy best adapted to that purpose.
