R Smith College boys. The foot-ball game at the Liberty Par Friday, between the Boonville team and the Geo R Smith Collage team. The was one sided affair for beginning to end. There were no special features about the game, for the simple reason that our boys had every thing their way, and the Boon-Ville boys were up against the real thing, The visiting players were all gentlemen and no fault could be snid of them only that they were to light. Tompkins, Kippe Bell, Harris and Johnson deserves special mentit: their line bucking and end runs were of high class order. Which we trust he will make a good officer Any person in any of the small towns, who may send us fifteen cach subscribers for our Christmas number by December 15th and a photo of themsefves, we will make a handsome half-tone cut free to appear in our Christmas number. Mr.G. Taylor of Colorada Sping made a call at this office this week and taken out a years subscription He were accompanied with his Miss Estella Martin of Alma. Mo. Lannie Hayes, James Childs, Lutha Mason and other colored waiters, went to Clinton Thursday where they served a swell wedding under the directions of the Boston Cafe of this city. Mr Walsh deserves the highest respect from the colored, for he keeps a good number of our people in study employment the year round The attention of the next legislature should be called to the fact that no provision has been made for Negro girls at Chillicothe, Mo. This is a state institution supported by the tax-payers of all classes. Yet when a colored girl was recently sentenced to be placed in that institution, she was refused admittance because 'no provision had been made for Negroes. VERSE IN SEASON When the turkey gobbler gobbles, In the barnyard on the farm He is happy when he's strutting For he never dreams of harm. He is ignorant of the edict That has made the children gay. He has never read the message That name Thanksgiving day. But the day is surely coming. And we hail it with a shout, When the gobbler will be gobbled if he don't watch out. During the recent general election there seemed to be an independent movement or revolt from the Republican party in the middle west and north-west by the colored voters. To illustrate this In St Joseph; Mo the colored voters put up a full ticket and called it the Abe Lincoln ticket, which was supported by only colored people. In St Louis the "Eagle" a Negro paper worked and advocated democratic election. In Chicago there were three colored men running on the Independent ticket, In Denver Col. one of the leading colored papers supported the democratic ticket. In San Francisco, a colored man was nominated and elected on the Socialist ticket. In Kansas City a Negre ticket was put in the field. In Sedalia more young colored men supported democrats then were ever know before. What does all of this mean? Does it mean that the colored voter is tired of the Republican party or principles? Or is the party tired of tee colored voters, something must be done. Are our party leaders doing their duty to their colored followers? Are they giving them their share of appointments as deputies? Are they giving him a free ballot in every state? If they are not doing these thing, it time they were doing it. The only way that this grand old party can hope to the colored vote their way is for them to not forge, them when the appointments fn city, county or tate. Economy. Neighbor--Your little Dicky seems very unwell; his cough is quite distressing. Don't you think he ought to have medical advice? Mrs. Flyntskyn—Well, yes, I suppose he ought; but, you see, the winter's coming on, and some of the other children are almost sure to get a bad cold or something, and it'll be almost as cheap to have the doctor in for two or three as to call him in for only one.—Ally Sloper. Disinterested. The man who had dropped in to see him was smoking a cheap cigar. "I think you will find it more comfortable," said Uncle Allen Sparks, pleasantly, "if you'll sit over there by that open window. There is no draught from it, as you will see from the fact that the smoke from your cigar goes out through it. There, that's better." —Chicago Tribune. Nothing Better in Sight. Cook—Please, ma'am, I want to give a week's notice. Mistress—Why, Jane, this is indeed a surprise. Are you not satisfied with the treatment you receive here? Cook—Oh, yes, ma'am. Cook—Oh, no, ma'am. I'm only going to get married, ma'am.—Chicago Daily News. Revenge. "They say she married him just to get him away from another girl." "What did the other girl do?" "Sent her a bundle of his love letters as a wedding present. That was the reason she had nervous prostration and was compelled to give up her wedding trip."—Chicago Record-Herald. Affability. Mrs. Tufthunter—I'm sorry you didn't come yesterday, Mrs. Cutler; I could have introduced you to Lady Begabit. She calls on me quite frequently now. Mrs. Cutler—Indeed! Do you know, I thought the craze for slumming had quite died out.—Ally Sloper. It Makes a Difference. "He's dreadfully disagreeable and boorish." "Tut, tut, my dear. He used to be, but he is no longer." "How is that?" "Why, since he has become famous we have decided to consider him only delightfully eccentric and original."—Chicago Post. People went to Barnum to be amused and he amused them. People go to the theatre, and if they are carried away by the play and laugh and shed tears over the incidents they are "humbugged"—to be sure—they believe for the time all the fiction of the play; it is real to them. But how much more would they be humbugged if the play didn't seem real? If Barnum advertised a woolly horse and then showed something which could by no pos- stretch of imagination deceive anybody that would be humbug. No, Barnum didn't humbug. He amused. The farmers of Walla Walla county, Wash., are laying their roads with straw. Every fall the highways become deep with dust, making traveling hard on man and beast. Heavy rains meant mud, and the dust could not be removed without destroying the roadway. It then occurred to an enterprising individual that if all of the farmers would contribute straw, and all hands assist in laying it on the roads most traveled, there would be a great change for the better. The experiment was a decided success. HINTS AND HELPS. Watercress is a good, all around braceup for the system. Gentlemen :- Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in ear auditory. I must admit a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidental to the deafer, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only at a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain. F. A. WERMAN, 730 S. Broadway, Baltimore, Md. Our treatment does not interfere with your usual occupation. Examination and advice free. DEP'T East St. Louis, IA CONCERNING POSTAGE STAMPS The two-pound rose-red of Rhodesia, 1890 issue, catalogues $30 in Sixtieth edition, is selling by London dealers at $11.50, and can be bought of the British South Africa company, in London, for face value—$9.74. A Melbourne paper announces that the £2 Victoria, long promised, has at last been issued. The stamp will not be used in appreciable quantities by the public, but it will, however, serve a useful purpose, when affixed to documents covering the issue of an equivalent number of circulars or papers, which will then only have to be branded: "Paid at Melbourne," instead of having stamps affixed to each one of them. While the descriptions of counterfeits in the philatelic press have an admitted instructive value, yet it is known that they, do not have so great an influence as is sometimes supposed. It seems that the average collector is not a stamp student who revels in the comparison of minute details—he does not take the time if he has it. He buys from reliable dealers and he feels safe in trusting to their knowledge. If at any time they are at fault and sell him a forgery, he knows that he will suffer no loss, but have his money or its equivalent refunded. The poor results attained in the printing of the new British stamps have led to the suggestion that the authorities in England make inquiries anew as to the relative merits and practicability of the two methods of stamp printing, surface and recess. Years ago, in England, the line engraving process was discarded in favor of typography, but the argument is now advanced that the successful application of steam printing to line-engraved plates (all the old British line-engraved stamps were hand-printed) has equalized the comparative cost of the process, and since the authorities seem to have given up the exclusive use of doubly fugitive colors—the washy purple and green—the arguments of the De La Rue, surface-printing, party have been sadly weakened. VARIOUS MATTERS Georgia fruit growers are claiming that the peach crop of their state yields more money to the producers than does the cotton crop. The two American cities in which the number of colored inhabitants is increasing most largely are Washington and Philadelphia. The registration of voters, except such as become of age between August 1 and election day in November, is now complete in Alabama, and it foots up 185,500, of whom 183,000 are white. Laxakola for Babies.—It is the best and most effective remedy for children BEST because it is pure and safe being made entirely of harmless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never gries or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine hearty condition. It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent catharics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fevers it is invaluable. A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhoea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation. "My baby is 4 months old and is teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the intestine. He pulled him through the hips he had in his hands. He was sick and I stopped giving him his medicine, kept him sleeping. He was troubled with colic very much, and used to scream when he had a touch of it. I didn't know what it was to close my eyes day or night. I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few times, and it worked like a scar, and he my restful sleep proved how good it was, we took a lot of time looking baby since I gave him LAXAKOLA, and I think it helped how good it was, we took a lot of time also to their sick babies." MRS. MARY DALEY, 597 First Street, South Boston, Mass. Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable. When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing. Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results. It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up. Laxakola for Mothers.-It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals. It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause. To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.
