The question has been asked a lot many times as to about how many of the many business firms and manufactories of our that employ colored help, year round, and for the sake those who are inquiring and any others who would like to know, we will do our best to mention below as many as we one of the main firms of our company that is now giving daily em- ployment to negroes as helping builds is the Missouri, Kansas & Texas railway company of this city, of which they employ daily in their work shops the following colored men: Wm. Ruby, T. P. Saffiter, Lonnie Drake, John Sims, C. O. Brown, Geo. Goodwin, Sas Ferrell. At the station as porters, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Smith. As porters that run out and in our city, Dan Jones. Thomas Smith, Henry Jackson, Bras Braisiar, Elias Fletcher, Smith Hightowner, Isaac Rey- olds, James Thomas, James Ewblis. THE MO. PAC. RY. Since the Mo. Pac. shops have moved away from our city, there are but a very few colored people employed in this city with this company. However, there are two steadily employed at the depot. Mrs. Salina Meyers as matron and Chas. Holliday as monitor. COLORED MEN EMPLOYED BY THE CITY. In the city affairs the colored people have but very little representation. They have one regular policeman, J. H. Johnson, one janitor of city hall, Walter Parker, one ex-policeman, Wm. Drake, and one substitute on the street gang. CHICKEN PICKING INDUST TRY. This business seems to have caught the greater part of negro help. In the New York Poultry & Egg Co., there has been a large gang of colored men employed for the past five years, in all departments and they have been drawing from one to three dollars per day. During the past few months up until about three weeks ago, the business has been very slack, but at present they are employing from 15 to 20 colored hands. Among them are, Robt. Martin, Verginal Bradly, Ernest Edwards. The Swift Packing Co., which is located on East Main street, employs a large number of coloured men and women, as chicken pickers and packers, which will number over 25. These people make on an average of $1.50 to $2.00 per day. TRANSFER LINE. Porter Transfer Line—three. Harrison Transfer Line—four. Rictors Transfer Line—three. Jones Transfer Line—two. LEMP ST. WAS A FAMILIAR FIGURE. He was known by all Sedalians As an honest and Intirely Worthy of Trust. After nearly a century of years of earthly toils, death came to the bedside of "grandpa" Anderson Powell, known as General Powell!, last Tuesday morning about sixthirty oclock and taken the wearied soul to rest. General Anderson Powell. as near as can be computed, was about 96 years old at the time of his death. He was in his early days the slave of the wife of Judge Thomas Joplin; and was brought to Missouri from Tennessee by Mrs Joplin in 1835. He remained with his mistress until he was freed, and, after becoming a freeman, managed her estate until she went to live with her sister, Mrs. Berry Williams, at When you FAMOU ```markdown ``` Versailles, Anderson Powell's mother, who was known as "Aunt Tempe," was brought with him from Tennessee. She was a native of Guinea, Africa, it is believed, from the fact that she could talk several of the Guinea dialects. "Aunt Tempe" died at the home of N. N Parberry in this city in 1861, age nearly 100 years. She was noted for her remarkable intelligence and fidelity to her employers- Gen. Anderson was a remarkable man. He was honest, reliable, trusty acd had been a member of the Morgan Street Baptist Church forceyears; and was noted for his wit and quickness at repartee. The general visited Washington. By his first wife he had two children, both of whom are living, namely Hiran and Mary Powell, the latter one is now living in the state of California. By his last wife he had two children, one of them Mrs Lucy Martin who resides in Denver. He leaves a good and faithful wife, three children, a number of grand-children, two great-grand-children and a host of friends among both black and white to mourn his lost. THE FUNERAL SERVICE The funeral services were held at the Morgan Street Baptist Church Thursday at 1 o'clock. The church was heavily drapped in mourning and was filled to its uppest with black and white friends of the deceased. Dr. Howell of Lexington and the home minisaers of this city assisted Rev. Gieger in the services. Rev Howell's text was "When this earthly house of clay crnmbles down, I have another not made with hands," after he had finished Rev Gieger commented upon the sermon and the life of the deceased Anderson Powell, he spoke very highly of the officers of the bank who took such pride in furnishing such handsome and costly burial for Mr Powell, they proved by their actions, deed, and attendance that they were on his friend while living, but his friend while dyihg and after death DRINK T do drink you should always want th US W™ Always on tap at the leadi DRINK THE BEST Always on tap at the leading bars of our city. call for it. Carter, Published Every Saturday Evening The Times office 120 E. Main st. A. W. H. Carter Editor and Publesher of The SEDALIA TIMES, who wishes his many friends and patronage a Merry Christmas A merry Christmas to you, my friends. Hang up the stockings and sacks for the children, for Old Santa has been shopping all week. A dollar spent in a home is worth more than five dollars spent in some foreign one. Our Christmas number is not as as large as we had planned from the fact that our own people failed to give us their support. Well may be they will next time. Our leaders should always be ready to help home enterprises and build them up iastead of booming up foreign ones and crushing out those at home. Joe Johnson our colored policeman has made a very fair officer, and has attended very close to his duty on the norteside. While he may have a number of enemies and fault-finders, yet he has a large number of true Sedalians who will say that he is a good officer, The same can be said of Edward Hodges, deputy constable. A big chifstmas entertainment will be given at the Taylor chapel M E Church, Thursday Dec 25th The white merchants of our city make a big mistake when they spend their money in the Indianapolis "Freeman" and think they are helping home enterprise. What good does that do the Negroes of Sedalia, from whom you expect to get trade. While you are figuring on turning over a new leaf New Years, we want to put a bug in your ear, and that is to put on that leaf that we unite our forces and patronize the white merchants who patronize Negro enterprise and give employment to Negroes. Christmas is here again and the the old year about to bid us goodbye. The people are beginning to straighten up their old accounts and getting ready to start with the new year. We have a large number of old accounts due us from this year's labor, and ask our patrons and subscribers to settle up as we need money very badly. Anyone owing us on subscription who will settle before the first of the year we will make a discount of 25 per cent. Please be kind enough to be able to start the new year square with the TIMES. --- A LITTLE POLITICS. There are some political gossips going around. It has been said that the man who may be appointed as janitor at the court house must be a man e from politics. We learn that Policeman Boult will have his mind made up to run for marshal next election. They tell us that Marshall Ed Love will be a candidate for sheriff two years hence if Chas. Confession: — Being entirely curd of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely in a treatment for earchirus, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, and others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. He has an elegant two-story residence on West Morgan street, and a well fitted office at 116 West Main street. Dr. Harris numbers his friends by the thousands, and his patients by the hundreds. He takes but very little interest in politics in any form, despite the fact that he was, two years ago, defeated for coroner on the republican ticket. He is a lover of baseball and football sport, and is now the manager of the Dewey team, of the Geo. R. Smith college, which is the best negro foot ball team in the state. [Name not visible] DR. C. S. WALDEN. The above is a true likeness of our friend, Dr. C. S. Walden, who is the first successful negro doctor in Sedalia, and today stands high in the business and political circles of our city. He is well thought of by all classes of citizens and is honorable and respected as a strong leader among his people. For several years he served as a member of the Pension Examination board, and made an honorable and creditable member. He has for years been a strong worker in politics and a lover and supporter of the republican party. He has done much for his race and party, for a large number of years. Davis was born in Missouri in 1852, and was converted in 1875. He was at that time living on a farm in Howard county. He received license as an exhorter under Rev. Prince Wright, who was at that time his pastor. In 1879 he was licensed to preach, and in 1880 was sent to Warrenton to supply that circuit. Having supplied that charge one year as a supply he entered traveling connection in the Misseuri Annual conference in 1881 He served the Warrenton charge three years, Sturgeon and Columhia two years, Montgomery and Wellsville three years, the North Fayette circuit one year, Glasgow four years and Mexico two years. Then seeing an opportunity to enter the George R. Smith school came to Sedalla taking charge of the mission work here, and spent two years preaching and attending school, after which time he was put on the Sedalia district, and is now serving his sixth year in the district. During his pastorate he has built two new churches, one new parsonage, repaired several churches and other parsonages. He had many good revivals and in many ways helped spread Methodism in his na- tive state. The church has honored him on more than one occasion. He was one of the ministerial delegates to the last general conference in that great body. His face is now turned toward the pastorate, and he feels that he has during the past six years has learned many things that will be helpful to him wherever his lot may be cast. He feels very grateful to the brethren and their congregations for the many acts of kindness to him since he has been presiding elder. In every place they have received him as a brother and have listened to his words with a degree of earnestness that made him feel that his mission was not in vain. Who is now employed at the J. Wes Goodwin Printing plant as press feeder started in this business early in 1885, and has followed the trade ever since. He is a widower and a hard working man, one who numbers his friends by the hundreds, and is respected by all. At two different times he and W. H. When we meet men like those who run the new Candy Kitchen, between Third and Fourth streets, who say that they do not care to advertise for the Negalia colored people's trade, then the Negroes of our city should never spend a penny over their counter. There are plenty of other good places in our city for the colored people to buy their canics beside patronizing such men as those who do not invite your trade. MR. B. F. REDMON.
