Now that the election is all over and aldermen Scally, Parks, Hodges and Fulkerson has been rejected again. The next thing is who shall be appointed in the offices to help run the city. There are only two of these places in which the colored people can hope to get. One of them are janitor of the city hall and market house, which is now held by Mr Walter Parker, one of Sedalia's best Negro citizen's. Mr Parker has made a very fair janitor so far as we can say, and has tried to do his duty. yet there are a few kickers. But others who now applying for his job who may make as good a janitor as Mr Parker, among them we are informed are James Ellis and Jordan Hickmad. We do not know if Mr Parker is asking for a re-appointment or not, but we do say that he has not brought disgrace upon himself nor shame upon any of those who appeainted him a year ago.
The next place is that of a policemau whidh is the fattest job in the gift of the council to the colored of this city. This office is now being held by Mr Billy Drake, who is serving out the un-expired term of Joe Johnson, who for reason was let out—or rather resigned a few weeks ago. Mr Drake has been in this are similar service for number years, and it is needless to say that he is not on to his job. But this office is supposed to be vacant and someone is to be appointed to serve the presnt year and th are a number of good qualified, honest and capable men who has applied for the job. We will mention only a few of them that we know to be suitable and trustworth men, who would care for themselfs, respect their job and make valuable police among them are T. A. Carter, B. F. Redman, both of these men has at one time served the city in this

capacity and both of them made excellent officers. always sober, cool headed and at their post of duiy when wanted. Aaron H. Hickman, another one of our pro mint men who has did much for his ward and party, he has never had this place, but has seraed as deputy constable and make an officer worthy of his heir and one that did his duty and did it well. As a policeman we have every reason to believe that he would make a good one if only given a chance. We are also told that our other friends Fred Bush, Alfred Dyer, Wm. Gray, Geo, Richardson and others are in this race. Our council will make no mistake if they select their man for this list for they are all men.
The article that appeared in our paper last week, concerning the card of thanks from Rev DeBoe and family, twas an error on the part of the Editor and not the family. It should have read as follows We desire to return four sincere thanks to the kind friends and neighbors for their kinddess and assistance during the illness and death of our son and brother Willie DeBoe.
signed { W. J. DeBoe
M. E. DeBoe
R. B. DeBoe.
The "Jim Crow" bill has been knocked into the head, Missouri will never suffer the disgrace of drawing the color line as far as coaches and street cars are concerned. The fears which have arisen in the hearts of many of our race has been lulled to rest. We feel that we are immensely indebted to our able representatives of our city, who surpended all business affair to weep their way to Jefferson City, for the legislature to disapprove of the bill. Mr J. W. McClure of Medalia, who so enthusiastically defended the Negro Race

POLITENESS DEFINE D.
Politeness does not consist in bowing and seraping and doffing of hats, although some very polite people do these things, says the Lexington News, bat we have observed much real rudeness from those who were adopted in the art mentioned. True politeness consists in consideration for the comfort and welfare of those whom we come in contact. A man is more trulp polite who quietly gives up his seat to a strange woman with as little appearance as possible of having done so than he who offers it with bows and flourishes that calls attention to his act. This is only an illustra ion: but unostentatious octs performed for the accommodation of associates mark the reallp polite person. Of course, gentle and elegant manners add a charm to all, but these are not always marks of politedesed they may be acquired but true politenes springs from a kindly heart. We so much ceremony and ostentation as to be real rudeness and we have observed times when refraining from offers of help was true politeness.
Wm. Drake who is now serving out the unexpired term of Joseph Johnson, is doing very well, his friends are hoping that he will be retained
Mrs W H Carter has been very sick this week

Missouri Elections
There were city elections through out the state Tuesday, and Sedalia was about the quietest. St. Louis went democratie by 18,000 majority, Jefferson City elected the intire republican ticket, Columbia elected a republican mayor for the first time, Sedalia elected a citizen's tieket for the second time by a small vote. Other cities went about as usual. At Tipton, mayor Boyd was re-elected for eleventh term.

Who Are The Barriers Of The Race
In recent years we hear many of our leaders, ministers, public speakers and politicians make public speadhee and speak aboutirace harmony, race unity and race progress, stating that we must be united and work to gether for one another's. The above idea and impressions are good and should be carried out. Let us see where the fault lies and why they are not carried out. First, when our race hold a convention or a mass meeting, or even meet in literary, debatino or a political organixation, the first thing you see them do is to get into a little clique to down or defeat someone that this little clique think ought to be defeated, or to get up and try to create a feeling between 'olditeitizens and new comers or what is still more observable, to create a feeling between the young men and the older men. All of these acts are narrow, mean, treachrous and injurious to any race or class of people. In nearly every case those foolish cliques are started by somu young man with no matured judgement, and less discretion. It is true that the older men of our rach has most of the political preference and bettes standing in the community than the unacquainted young man would have, ev-

or as be honest, who is it today that keeps the race seperate in the every community [in America?] It is the young, unreasonable, ogotiscal, self-concieted man. Then another thing that is perse and must be stop ped is, when a man of our race receives a appointment or a nomination, a few af the race will start to try to have his displaced or beaten, because he does not suit his fancy, or because he don't go to your church or agree to give you a part of his salary, then you will do every mean thing you can and dejeat him, and the results would that no Nefiro would get the job.
Leaders stop fighting our people who are after jobs and appointments in order to make for themselves and families a respectable and honest living. if you are to proud; to ask for a job as janitor or policman, dont fight others because they may want it, always speak a good word for every Negro who treis to climb. let him be old or young, and then you will prove yourself worthy of being called a leader.

Advertising is becoming more and more
honest every day. It pays better every day,
When people really understand that adver-
tising is a necessary and legitimate part of
every business, that it is merely a store

It is facts that people want. I have
heard a merchant say:
‘Ob, it don’t pay to advertise, because
people don't believe the ads. Mr. So-and-So

He was wrong, of course. People soon

The X-Ray Can Be Relied On wit.
Absolate Certainty in Making
the Test,
In detecting a false gem from a gen-
nine, the X-ray. says an article on
X-ray photography, in Leslie’s
Monthly, can be relied on with abso-
rate certainty. Diamonds, as is well
known, are pure carbon; and carbon,
which is opaque to ordinary light, is
transparent to the Roentgen light,
while glass, which is transparent to
ordinary light, is opaque to the Roent-
gen ray. On an X-ray photograph
of a real diamond nothing will show
but the shadow of the gold setting.
‘An interesting experiment wasmade
recently in watebing with the aid of an
X-ray machine and a fluoroscope, mo-
tions carried on inside of an opaque
body. A goose was fed with food
mixed with subnitrate of bismuth salt,
which absorbs the X-ray. The pas-
sage of the food down the long neck
of the goose could be plainly traced
by the moving shadow cast on the
fluoroscope screen.

iNT CIGAR,
Years.
“The average life ofthe nickel
cigar is five years,” said’ prominent
tobacco man to @ writer for the New,
Orleans Times-Democrat, “and it
is curious to note the differences
which have enabled cigar men to ar-
tive at this general average of the
five-cent cigar’s life. Many cigars
of this class run through a long series
of years. There are some brands
now that have been running for more
than a quarter of a century under
the same name, and they are really
the same cigars, made in the same!
way, having the same flavor and all
that sort of thing. In this connection
Ihave been impressed by the remark
which we often hear about certain:
brands of cigars changing in quality.
I heard a man say the other day that
he had been smoking a certain brand:
of cigars for two ‘years or longer,
but that the cigar was getting so
bad that he had concluded to
quit buying it at all. ‘It is
nothing like the same cigar,’ he said;
“the taste has changed, and it tastes
like a mixture of cabbage leaves.’
Now he was altogether wrong
about that. I know the cigar, know
how it is made and all about it, and
I know that no sort of change has
been made in the process of manufac
ture. The trouble is that man’s taste
changes. He may get up feeling bad-
ly, his stomach may be in bad shape,
cand of course the cigar will not taste
as it did when his system was in bet-
ter condition. The cigar is blamed,
and he simply dashes the thing into
the street, and quits buying it. In-
stances of this surt are very common,
Mind you I do not mean to say that
some of the brands do not change.
There are tricks in the cigar business,
just as there are tricks in other
trades. But in nine cases out of ten
the trouble is with the smoker. But
recurring to the age of cigars, the av-
erage to which I have referred has
been settled upon by tobacco men
and is accepted throughout the coun-
try. It is reached by taking the two
| extremes, the good and the bad five
cent cigar, and aguring back to the
middle. Some five cent cigars close
with the first lot made. ‘They are
failures, having nothing in them to
recommend them to the public. ‘The
material out of which they are made
would not make decent ‘three-fors,
the kind that are sold to the negroes
on the river. The higher grades of
five cent cigars are made as careful
ly, and with as much skillasthecigars
that are sold at a higher price, and I
do not mindsayingthatmany of them
are really far superior in materi
al, flavor and method of manufao-
ture. So many of them, however, are
of the cheap kind that the average is
lowered to five years, while the aver
age life of the higher priced cigars
will run to a much higher figure.”
TWO MOONS OF SALT.
Some Interesting Statements Concerning
Amount of Salt in the Sea.
Roughly speaking, says the Cin-
cinnati Commercial Tribune, if you
take the salt out of thesea water, you
‘deprive it of a thirtieth of ite
weight. On that basis one-thirtieth
of the entire weight of all the sea
water in the world is salt, and, as salt
and water bulk about the same, we
may estimate, also, that, by bulk,
one-thirtieth of the huge mass of
the ocean is pure salt, What does

F. A. WERMAN, OF BALTIMORE, SAYS:
BALTIMORE, Md., March 30, 1901.
"Gentlemen—Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be taken up direction.
About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely.
I received a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, and the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, even that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever."
I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a new York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain Very truly yours.

From Infancy To Age
Mother and Child
When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing.
Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results.
It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up.
Laxakola for Mothers.—It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals.
It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause.
To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.
