Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Taberan hall. This order was founded by Rev T. B. Gardner, of Warrenburgh, who is a native of Kentucky. He has spent the past Eight months in solving this tast, and has traveled from town to town upon his own responsibilities introducing to the Negro the great Benevelent of his order, The Royal Sons and Daughters of Fred Douglas, until he has been able to hang up its banner in more than a dozen of towns in Missouri, under State, and has a membership of nearly 250 loyal Sons and Doughters, carring the the name of our great statesman and leader, Fredrick Douglas. Smith College of our city opened for the present term, last Tuesday, with quite a large number of students enrolled, among them were a number of new ones who is now spending their first ear in this college. The opening cerimonies were had in the afternoon. Pres Lowe making a splendid opening address to the students and visitors present, explaining why certain parts of the printed program was omitted, however the program was carried out about as follows; Rev W. M. Smith, presiding elder delivered a touching address to the students of the school, encouraging them along the lines of Christain Education. Rev Gillum, DD., of St. Louis, was the next speaker, who spoke on the great Emancipation Day of which the school [is opening on, and the great demand for young men and women, of Chsistain Education, Rev B. F. Abbott, of Springfield, followed with an telling address upon the large flag that was donated to the school by McGlaugthen Bros. Rev Wm Alexander pastor of Quinn chapel, A. M. E. Church, delivered a touching and soul stirring address, encouraging the students in their noble effort. Rev J. M. Harris, of Kansas City, then spoke along the lines of the much needed Industrail department for the school and the meaning of "college" of which he made a beautiful illustration and gave some valuable information on The pastors present at this opening were; Presiding Elder Wm. Smith, Dr Gillum St Louis; Rev B. F. Abbott Springfield, Rev Bohannon Knobnoster, Rev Bowles Warrensburg; Rev J. M., Harris of Kansas City; Rev Gibson Clinton, Rev R H Smith Louisiana: Rev Bishop Tobe, Revs Alexander, R Daeis, Martin reed, and J H. Ball. I wish that the Negroes of Sedalia would one time open their eyes so they might behold the great disregard that a certain white restaurant keeper has for them and their trade with him. Although to me it seems as though a blind man could easily see and understand the meaning of such treatment, this restaurant is patronized daily by many Negroes who spend money freely, but the accommodations accorded them is something horrible. This restaurant has a number of tables for white people; a lunch cobnter which one might term a horseshoe counter, two sides of which for whites, the other, the east for Negroes, close to the wall. At the same time we may mention that the Negroes spend one-fourth of the money that is spent in this restaurant at night, and on show and Sunday nights it is a common thing to see a number of negroes standing up waiting for a chance to spend their money in this place. In most cases its a young man with a lady while Negroes are waiting for a chance. A number of tables are not always in use, which no Nogro car use. Also in this restaurant is a common wash basin to be used by whites, not Negroes, therefore you may readily see the accommodations are not for Negroes, and at the same time one-fourth of the earnings come from them. This should be enough evidence to prove to every Negro patronizing it that he does not care his trade. He says you are not worthy of sitting at his tables or using his accommodations. Then you should fail to patronize him. It is time you should let him know that you have pride as well as the white people. Patronize our Negro restaurant like you do him and he will be able to in time to have as nice a place of business as can be found. A CILIZEN. At first it had been nothing more than an inter- change of a few remarks on leay- jng the hotel dining room in the morning, and an occasional chat on the piazza after supper. from this it became a regular thing to saunter together down to the boat landing for a pull across. the lake before the sun made outdoor exercise imposst- ble. Then, because the mail came at 12, it suited them both to linger under the shade trees on the lawn until the distribution of letters began. It was on these occasions that they compared notes upon the subject of sum- mer resorts in general and Fair- yiew Springs in particular. They were there for the same reason—rest and Change of air. Roth were eager to exchange the quiet of the place for the rush of their everyday life. It was not easy for him to shake off the thought of his neglected, jaw practice and it was equally hard for her to forget the halt- finished manuscripts calling for attention in her desk at ome, With a frankness which was not! flattering and which would have surprised either under other cir- cumstances they only discussed their dismay over the prospect} of remaining two months or lon- ger at Fairview and bestowed their most ardent pity on all new-comers to the Springs. If in the beginning he had ac- cepted the situation blindly, he was the first to realize it in its full signifieance for, argue with himself as he might, there was at least no oyereoming the disa- greeable truth that he had giv- en his promise to one woman and his love to another. In his inmost soul he knew he had no, right to fecl that perfect sense of happiness which had_ lately come to him. It was only when he was alone that conflicting emotions took possession of him. When he looked into her steadfast eyes he was conscious that she had moved him as no other woman had done. He did not tell himself that he had nev- er loved until now; but knew it was beeause he wished he could undo the past, and this had nev- er been the ease before. He heeded her always, he would reason with himself, but whenever he used this argument he felt that she would be the first (could she know it) to as- sure him that he was striying after the shadow and not*the substance, He was a weakling, trying to depend on her strength. A cablegram calling her home —her sudden departure one morning—these were things to recall her to the reality of life. A formal little note of fare- well, two or three faded roses— and a memory were all he had to tell of the summer. Rudely awakened from his dream of happiness, he was like'| a man proping in the dark. “The right way!” he said to himself. “Which is right?” With his face buried in his hands, he thought the matter out. The Spell of her presence was gone, but its fragrance remained. She is also fighting out the battle alone. It is strange that actuated by the same feeling and arguing along the same lines they should have arrived at Such widely different conclu- sions. The first letter she wrote was not to him—but another man. OR oe Lee ee ee hearts were made for more, an they will have their due. Do not reproach me, for it was not my fault that I learned this too late.” Then. she began to turn the pages of one of her manuscripts, ous trying to collect her thoughts. But a while ago every- ‘thing was different. When she was tred there had been someone whose strong arms were ever ready to receive her; and now— but she could not think of it just then. The letter that he wrote brought tears to the eyes of the ‘girl who read it: - “Thave been away for a long time, it said, “but I am coming home tomorrow. As I look ‘through my window I can see the foliage on the mountain side changing to red and purple, and yesterday I saw a flock of birds flying to the south. Think ot it; the roses were in bloom when I told you good-bye. Now 1 want to ask you to take me ‘for better, for worse,’ before the snow marks the winter time. For better, for worse, such as I am, take me and make me what you will of me. Heaven grant it may be ‘for better.” He Guessed the Trouble. “This is a cold, unfeeling world,” he remarked, bitterly. “Ha!” returned lis companion. “You have heard the ribald laugh when you slipped ona banana skin, too, have you?”—Brooklyn Eagle. If you did, the chances are that it would never grow into the fruit-bearing stage of development, I saw a notice the other day of an adver- tisement which had been run continuously in identically the same form since 1866. ‘That advertisement may have done some good, probably did; but to bring really ade- quate returns, advertising should be freshened by frequent changes of copy.
