THE SEDALIA VOLUMN X. No 6 crand Wedding Reception Last Sunday Night Mr and Mrs A. H, Hickman gave a grand wedding reception at their residence on north Washington st. last Sunday night in honor of the arrival of their son Virginal Bradly and wife, who were married Sunday morning at the bride's home in Boonville. The bride is a very handsome young lady and of good parents, and comes to our highly spoken of by all who knew her. The groom is one of Sedalia's highly respected young men, he having been brought up in a good family speaks well of his future life as a married man. The TIMES joins the many friends in congratulating happy young couple, and hope that their journey through life will continue to be as sweet and as happy as it was while spending the honey-moon. Those present at the reception were. Mr T. P Moffit and wife W. H. Carter and wife, Wm Gray Bunt Brown. Miss alless Venerable, Miss Ada Bird and Mrs Katy Monnen. Supper was served as follows: Baked turkey, cranberry sauce; Mixed pickels; Sweet pickels; Celery; Mashed potatoes; Sweet potatoes; Cabbage; Grape pie; Apple pie; Coffee; Milk; Tea; Plain bread; Select peaches; Cakes. The young couple will make Sedalia dalia their future home. ENTRACTS FROM NEGRO PAPERS ON BOOKER T. WASHINGTON. The following is taken from the California Independent for the benefit of our readers: The papers run by colored men are full of opinions these days pro and con relative to Booker Washington and the work he is doing at Tuskegee. Some commend him and some criticise him. We would like all of them to be situated as he is, and see if they would do any better than he has. It is all right for these gentlemen to be hundreds of miles away from Tuskegee and suggesting that their methods are the ones that should be in vogue there, but it is a vastly different thing to be placed in Washington's position way down in Alabama. He is doing a great work. and seems destined to do a greater one if let alone.—Ex. The Boston colored folks who were sent to jail a few days ago for disturbing Mr. Washington's meeting have climbed over the fence and are out. They have gone to work organizing the Negro Suffrage League, which is only another name for trouble. The organization, while it does not say so, has for its object the opposing of Booker Washington, and like all petty spite work is doomed to failure. Now Booker T. Washington is working, and while to our mind, his work is not perfect, still he is doing a great deal more to help the country than half a thousand of his loudest critics. Dallas [Tex] Express. Those who don't understand the arguments that Washington puts forth, in the suppression of Negro manhood, we are sorry for their thick skulls. Washington, the founder of Tuskegee, we admire, but when it comes to acknowledging him as the putative leader of the race, and political boss extraordinary, we draw the line. —Tampa Intelligencencer. The Negroes are peculiar in many ways, but in nothing more than in their jealousy of those of their own race who get on in the world. It is notorious that many of them vote against any Negro that may be nominated for office, even though they may have made great efforts to get a Negro nominated. Sooner or later Mr. Washington was bound to come i to collision with this feeling. Negroes see him invited to dinner by white people, entertained by the President of the United States, and they, or many of them, conclude HON. J. H. It is an unworthy suspicion, for Booker T. Washington is the same humble, modest and retiring man that he always was. Yet he has suffered because of his association with white people, and so we have the Suffrage League classing him and the President together as the enemies of our people. The resolutions are foolish in the extreme, but they undoubtedly reflect the feelings of many Negroes. D. has bought a beautiful home in Tipton and is now enjoying the same. He is pastor of Versailles and Speed Churches. Prof J. H Burton, a graduate of Lincoln Institute is teaching in Saline, this is the seventh year since he came out of school and he is succeeding nicely. Miss Lottie Key of Lexington, Montana, came to Tipton two year ago to see her aunt Mrs Caroline Thomas. Mrs Key is an ideal girl and a fine scholar, she returned home Oct. 31. Active preparations are being made for the "Farmers convention to be held at Lincoln Institute today. It is hoped that all who are interested in farming. and other questions, will attend Dr B. F. Allen entertained at his home and in princely fashion, the members of the factulty, on Friday night October 16, and on the following Friday night the members of the senior normal class 43 in number. The evenings of both instances was spent most happily, the time passing all too rapidly midst sweet strains of instrumental and vocal music, interspersed with salles of wit and humor, recitations story telling. etc. Among other unique features in the line of amus ments provided by Dr Allen for the entertainment of his gugst. the "conversation party" and the floral contest, will long be remembered by all present. Miss Josie Wright, of Boonville, and Mr. W. Carter, of Slater, were united in married October 22. Mr. Carter took his bride and skipped for his farm near Slater. Brooks, of Moberly, spent two nights at my home. Ben C. Wilson, of Boonville, is an excellent type of manhood and a man of more than ordinary push. His home is a commodious one. Mr. William Jackson owns a fine brick house on Fifth street, in Boonville. Mr. Andrew Beard, of Birmingham. Ala., patented a coupler for railroad cars and sold the patent for $100,000. Mr. Geo, M. Arnold, of Rocheport, went to Boonville and was operated upon by the doctor, and he is getting along poorly. Rev. L. Shepherd, of Boonville, is up in Saline county preaching. Prof. D. E. Taylor, the principal of the school at Rocheport, Mo., is succeeding nicely. Mrs. M. F. Arnold, wife of John Arnold, spent a pleasant trip to Buffalo, New York, and at Niagara Falls. Mr. Nelson R. Pipes and Miss Carrie Cowden, of, Rocheport, were united in marriage at St. Louis. The bell will tap for others soon. Mr. Alexander Pipes is repairing and putting new buildings on his place. Mr. D. Eaton, on his farm of nearly two hundred acres north of Rocheport, is noted as a successful farmer. We, the persons named below, believe our success depends upon good management and race pride. It has been the custom heretofore that when a city or county officer died, his successor has always been a man of the deceased's political opinion, but this rule does not amount to anything, according to the action of the court, in the appointment of Mr. Albers to succeed the late Judge Berry. The work of the valiant workers of Taylor Chapel M. E. church last Sunday will stand in the history as a premium for raising money in a short time for years. Rev. Richard Davis, the excellent and able leader of this flock of Christian workers, began this battle of a new church rally about three weeks ago last Sunday, and in so doing, he named twelve captains, who were to organize their armies and battle to raise the largest sum for this rally day, last Sunday. The fight began early—without delay—and the town was haunted from one end to the other by these captains and their workers. Socials, suppers, concerts, entertainments and prizes were given during this battle, and also trolley parties—everything that was honorable was done by these workers to raise the money. All last Sunday each captain and their secretaries were busy collecting in their donations until the winding up that night, and after each had reported the results of her battle, the grand total was over three hundred dollars.
