Springfield as a city cannot rightly criticise Cairo. But all the same, the State Register will take the liberty to speak for Springfield citizens and say that the brutal lynching of the negro James by the mob in Cairo last evening was a disgraceful criminal act. It was inexcusable from any standpoint. There was no necessity for the act, even were the guilt of the negro fully established; for the courts are open and the negro, if found guilty, could have had to suffer the enalty of his dastardly, horrible crime. The employment of legal methods to punish a criminal—no matter how heinous the crime—where the courts are open and the law has free sway—has the opposite of a deterrent effect upon crime. It is a species of savagery which demoralizes a community, and must result in weakening the law and encouraging its non-observance. As strong as the law and no stronger is a sentiment that should prevail among civilized and enlightened people to insure good government and good citizenship. The lynching at Cairo is another blot on the fair name of the people of this land of the free and home of the brave. The horrible, brutal crime of which James is said to have confessed himself guilty deserves the most severe punishment; but the wretch should have been punished legally. News has come since writing the above of another outrage committed by the same mob in storming the jail and taking out Henry Salzner, an alleged wife murderer, and lynching him, which adds to the infamy of the lawless element of Cairo and magnifies the condemnation of every good citizen of these acts of lawlessness. It is high time that the supremacy of law in Illinois should be established by the punishment under the law of the men who perpetrated such disgraceful deeds as those which took place in Cairo last night,—Illinois State Register. But the main question is—Has Illinois come to this pass? Can the state afford it? Is law and government to surrender to their opposite—anarchy and the mob? God forbid. But let us not look at from a racial or geographical point of view, but the broader view, the tendency to disrupt or organized government. The mob had no conclusive evidence as to the guilt of the victim—they were simply enraged and barbaric. They had no respect for color—they lynched a white man—only accused, not proven to have been guilty. No punishment is too severe for any one guilty of the crime for which James and Saxoer were lynched; but how much more dastardly is the killing of the girl than the work of the mob? That is a matter to consider. Mob law must be subdued. TWO SIDES TO THE QUESTION. While we condemn mob law without moderation and without reservation, we likewise condemn the alleged cause for the majority of the lynchings. We believe the colored people should be taught and made, to refrain from committing these awful deeds. The careless, idle, shiftless Negro should be discouraged and made to work; the idle man, black or white is a menace to any community. Morality, education and good cit zenship should be imparted to the child early in life. Don't think because we bitterly condem mob violence that we condone the crimes committed which incite men to perpetrate such a thing. The men, Jackson and Sutton, who are accused of outraging two young girls, should be punished, if guilty, to the fullest extent of the law. Help push the industrial school. Don't forget to make it a real Thanksgiving Day. Special commendation is due the young ladies of the Benedicto club for the rendition of so superb a program as the one at St. Paul church last Tuesday evening. The object of this club is, per se, praiseworthy—they are banded for no less noble a purpose than a research after the hidden mysteries and untold wisdom of the great writers and composers, making music a special feature of this research. No steps backward, is our advice, push forward until you shall have reached your destined goal, the mark of the high calling, and when your heads shall have become noary, the reflection on your past, will be a brilliant history and an enviable heritage. PROGRAM at NEW HOPE The annual Fair at New Hope Baptist church begins Monday, Nov. 22nd and will continue through Thanksgiving. Special religious services at 10:45 on Thanksgiving day. Sermon by the pastor. Good music furnished by the choir, followed with a rally effort conducted by the women's Sewing circle. A fine program will be rendered on the evening of the 25, under the management of Miss Nancy Brown, admission 15 cts TUCKER'S PLACE. Board and Lodging House.
