PULASKI COUNTY ILL.
Not all of us know that Pulaski Co. has over 450 Negro farms located within its confines. Massac Co. is next. Attorney Rice of Mound City tells that Pulaski Co. has more colored farms than any other county in any other state North of Mason and Dixon's line. Mr. Rice also says that there is no material race friction in the county, that the white and colored people get along harmoniously and that the Negroes are buying property and making headway, all of which is gratifying.
We need more farmers in this county and more industries. The colored people must become producers.

NEGROES AT THE FRONT IN MEXICO ALSO.
Ever since the battle of Bunker Hill; yonder at Boston, the colored man has been a willing part and parcel of the army and navy of the United States.
In 1812 the Colored boys helped Andrew Jackson at New Orleans and came on down the line. In the civil war, it is said 200,000 took part in the Union Army, or nearly that number.
Now two Negro regiments are assisting in this puni tive expidition, looking for Villa.
Well, it will prove o. k., no doubt, the whole matter.

ELKS' MINSTRELS.
The Minstrel and Ball Siven by the local order of Elks at Arion Hall, March 30th, was a pronounced success, both from an entertainment and view point and financially. The program was a little lengtqy, but all seemed to enjoy the amusers. The vocal music by Dr. Ware and Miss Moore was very commendable. The dunces were good also.
The comedians, Stone and Perry proved funny. For a short notice affair, it may be said to be complimentary.

THIS CLEAN UP BUSINESS.
This idea of cleaning the city is a good idea. It shows progress creates thrift and produces a more sanitary community. People should keep their premises clean, inside and out. To keep clean, raise chickens and keep house, lazy persons should not apply. Life means activity. It means constant work. It is the "live" person whose premises are clean and whose lawn is inviting.
Clean up week is now on. Get thee gone to work, thou sluggard.
We hope every Negro in Springfield will make himself a beautiful lawn and a fine garden and raise chickens, but you can't do it if you are lazy and procrastinating.
Cleanliness is next to godliness.
RESULT OF THE ELECTION.
The republican Township ticket was elected by a large majority. The complexion of the board will be overwhelmingly republican. For the School Board, the "Administration Ticket" was elected.
This was one of the most hotly contested elections Sangamon County ever before had.
Weekly paper devoted to the interests of the whole people. Entered as second class mail matter Feb. 24, 1904, at the post office at Springfield, Ill., under the act of Congress of March 3, 1879.

SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1916
Ex-president Roosevelt looms high and shines forth with effulgent lustre. Hitherto, it was thought that he committed "suicide" $3\frac{1}{2}$ years ago, but if he did he has risen and is "alive forever more," it doth appear.
Sherman's chances seem to be growing with phenominal rapidity, and it appears that if Hughes and T. R. are eliminate the other candidates will dwindle into insignificance before the colosal Illinoian, Sherman is one of the ablest men of the nation at the present time and has few superiors as a statesman and diplomatist.
It is hard to keep an elective office out of 'politics,' even if there is "no politics in the office.
Let every fellow proceed now to look after his own back yard and garden and home and he or she will be pleasing the Lord more so than by meaningless prayers and gossip.
If each person will combat his own faults with as much ferocity and tenacity as he or she does the faults and short comings of others, there will not be so much time extravagantly wasted and the world will be immeasurably better off.
Mrs. Lauterbauch, an aged woman of this city who died this week, was 95 years old having been born in 1821. It was said that she was probably the oldest woman in the city, but she was not. Mrs. Revere, a colored woman, residing in the 1900 block E. Brown St. is over 100 years old. This rport can be verified.
We are not concerned about what you think when you look thru smoker glasses and never see but one side of the triangle. Remember that the square on the hypothenuse of o right angle is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. Sometimes what one fellow says in 5 minutes is worth more than what you say in 5 hours. The multiplicity of words is not an argument and invariably, not even truth.
The time is approaching for disorderly conduct on Washington St. by our young men and women and we hope the colored officers will do their full duty do not allow it. We believe Washington St. should be as circumspect as So. 5th St.
The K. of P. Annual Sermon will be held the first Sunday in May.
"What you can do with your will," is the subject of an article by Russell H. Conwell, in the April American Magazine, and should be read by every young man and woman. It will give you plenty of ambition and inspire you to wake up and try to do something in the world.
When you find a person who condemns everybody such a person is either very narrow minded or mentally unbalanced. The neighbors do not care to hear your ills—give them some sunshine.

PETER H. BURKE
An appealing, picturesque romance of real life. A story of achievement almost rivaling in interest the tales of those famed heroes of ancient Rome and Greece of the ancient world to be imbued with powers beyond those of mortal men.
A book full of human interest, recounting the life history of a child, can make a huge to leading educator, author and industrial advocate. An inspiration in every line, and the story of a lifework which offers an example for every boy and the youth in the world.
The life story of a man who was a most remarkable product of modern civilization in all his phases. The twenty-first century has brought people out of the wilderness of ignorance, superstition and indifference and pointed the way to knowledge, industry and progress.
