Senator B. K, Bruce! Cambridge, Mass., Dee. 7.—A victory in debate came to Harvard for the third consecutive time over Yale in St, Andrew's theater to-night, In logic Harvard overpowered her Op- Donent and received the major share of applause from the aldience. ‘The best speaker for Harvard was Roscoe Conklin Bruce, who won the college prize in the trial debate, and singular- dy the leader_on the Yale side was Frank Sincerbaum, who won the ‘Thatcher prize at his college. The question was, “Resolved,* That the Permanent Retention of the Philip- pines by the United States Is ‘Desir- able.” Harvard had the affirmative. The Judges, William B, Hornblower of New York, Judge Addison Brown of the United States Supreme Court, and Oscar S. Straus, United States minis- ter to Turkey, were in conference half en hour before-giving the decision in Harvard's favor. Harvard was rep- resented in the debate by Murray Sea- songood, Henry Porter Chandler and Roscoe C._ Bruce. Yale's speakers were F. M. Sincerbaum, Charles W. Merriam and Mason ‘Trowbridge. It 1s no small thing to be a prize winner in’ Harvard, the leading college in this country, in any sort of con- test, but to win'a prize over Yale, which at least stands second in. the Uist of colleges, 1s a matter any one may well be proud of. That this very high honor has been justly awarded to an Afro-American should be very encouraging to our young men and it emphasizes the true but trite saying, “We's risin’.” ‘The late presidential campaign was notable for the great amount of litera- ture which was distributed through- out the country and the amount of work done by the newspapers. I was truly ‘an educational campaign ‘Tho Afro-American papers certainly did their share in the good work and they should receive some substantial recognition which doubtless they will, as the good work done by them is well known to members of the na tional committee and the administra tion. Minnesota has a hard job before her in selecting a suecessor to the late United States Senator, Cushman K. Davis, a8 his place will be hard to ‘All, A number of good men are un- der consideration and while the one upon whom the toga shall fall may not make it bulge out, there will cer- tainly be no necessity to shake it to find he's in it. Yule-tide comes on apace and the hearts of all the little ones and not a few of the big ones are filled with fond hopes of kind remembrances by Santa Claus or some one else. Mysterious Komp of Murderees. Grinnell, Ta,, Dec. 10.—Hugh Dick- son, the man’ charged with the mur- der’ of Lottie Holmes’ near ‘Thayer Ja few days ago, has escaped from the Union Couaty ‘jail. ‘The method of hhis eseape 1s a complete mystery. No doors were open and no bars broken. Oub AGE HONORED Convent'on of Maptist Ministers Show Det 5 Nepean wae aecca tea Columbia, S. C., Dec. 8.—Three hun. dred white ministers, delegates to th Baptist convention at Greenwood arose and remained standing’ today while the Rev. Edward Stark, ai Afro-American, was walking up. the aisle of the church to the rostrum Stark was 100 years old on Aug. 16 last, and has been preaching seventy: six years. He made an address dnd befdre adjournment led the conven- tion in prayer. ‘AFRO-AMERICAN COUNCIL. Ington: December 28, 1900. ‘The members of the sub-executive committee of the Afro-American Council are hereby directed to meet in the parlors of the Southern Hotel, 311 Pennsylvania avenue, northwest, Washington, D. C., Friday, at 13 o'clock, noon, December 28, 1900. As this will be the first meeting ot the sub-executive committee since the annual meeting in Indianapolis in ‘August last, it is of the greatest im- portance that all the members should attend. ‘The test case now: pending in the matter of the new constitution of Louisiana is to be further considered in the ght of what has been accom- plished by the committee having the matter in charge during the past year. . ‘The question of the reduction of Southern representation jp Congres and the Electoral Colleg® under the mew apportionment, under the pro- ‘visions of the Fourteenth amendment will also be thoroughly considered and a plan of action suggested, ‘The question of a more thorough organization of the council in all the States and ‘Territories will also be discussed and plans to promote the work of organization outlined. One: of the modern methods of dis posing of garbage is to burn it. In England experiments have been made, 4m the’ interest of economy, with the ‘immediate utilization sof the heat ‘thus produced, Steam. engines and dyna- ‘mos for electric lighting have been as. sociated with garbage “destructors.” Lord Kelvin evinced great enthust- asm over and confidence in this prop- osition three or four years ago. ‘The latest development of the idea has possibly been suggested by the present high price of coal in Europe. At any rate, @ new form of fuel has {pat made Its appearance in London, and it is composed chiefly of street sweepings and Thames mud. ‘This material is ‘Subjected to chemicaf treatment thie precise nature of which is not ex- Dlained. But, as.in the manufacture of brignettes’ from ‘coal dust—an. ex- tensive industry in Europe—some Substance like pitch is employed to bind the solid or semi-solid particles together. ‘The compound is subjected to high pressure and a temperature of 300 or 400° degrees Fabrenhelt. When burned the fuel yields a small amount of powdery residue. The Docks produced by this process are called “fuelettes” and are sold for three farthings each. One is said to be sufficient to cook a light’ breakfast.
