SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 1902.
Every once ina while something
turns up to prove that the Southern
rebels are not Heked yet, and the same
‘old intolerant spirit constantly crops
out. A few days ago an organizer of
labor unions who was organizing both
blacks and whites into unions, was in
formed by a paper signed by the mayor
‘and a majority of the business (2) men
of the burg that he would have to move
on, The rebellion was Drought on by
the Southerners, who wanted to be “let
‘lone in their management of the
blacks within thelr borders. That is
still their slogan, ‘They tried throwing
‘out the votes of black men, they tried
bulldozing at the polls, but there was
too much labor involved, and. they
@on’t hanker after too much Tabor, 80
they made Iaws (2) with @ grandfather
‘clause in them that effectially made
‘the black man go ‘way back and alt
own on election day. ‘They use the
front yards of thelr high echools for
‘object lessons fn Iynching’ black. men
0 that the children may get the full
Denet of them. They make thelr nis-
torles so that the real heroes are found!
wearing the gray. Their greatest fete
days are at Contederate reunions, thelr]

Veterans admitted to the national sol-
Giers’ homes and on the pension roll,
and, finally, they, through their
women, are endeavoring to prevent the
produetion ‘of “Uncle ‘Tom's Cabin”
south of Mason and Dixon's line, elaim-
Ing that it is a Mbel on the South, when
they know that.in Mrs. Stowe's story
she drew the picture very mild, and
that the truth is by far worse than the
fiction. Why they have even gone so
far as to malign the author by saying
that she said that if she had known
what a dear, delightful, human, unsel-
fish, Christian, Christlanizing institu-
tion slavery was she would never have
written “Uncle Tom's Cabin." Untor-
tunately Mrs. Stowe is dead and cannot
deny the libel, When the women who
wanted the play of “Uncle Tom's
Cabin" stopped in Lexington, Ky.,
wrote to the manager of the opera
house stating thelr wishes and promis-
Ing to boycott his theatre if he put on
the play, he replied by stating that the
war was over thirty years ago, but he
reconkend beyond his ken. The war is
inet over:
‘The Lexington (Kentucky) Chapter
‘of the Daughters of tho Confederacy
are up in arms about the production of
“ale Tom's Cabin” atthe lea

the manager that St never again be

depicted in “Uncle Toni's Cabin.”
‘The theatre manager replied to the
committee as follows:
“Ladies: A copy of your resolution
sn reference to “Uncle Tom's Cabin’ has
been received. Replying to the same,
Thave only to say: ‘The war bas been
over about thirty-six years.’”
Now they are preparing to make
Kentucky appear ‘ridiculous in the
eyes of the world py petitioning the
legislature to forbid the production of
“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in the state.
‘The proposed plan for organizing the
Afro-American voters into an inde-
pendent poltical party is a Democratic
scheme to divide the Republican party
and give the Democrats control of the
state, ‘The work is to be done through
secret agents, who will be supplied
with funds from that party. If the
Democracy should gain power enough,
the distranchisement of Afro-American
voters may follow as in the South. The
Republicans have not done all that
could and should have been done for
Justice and equal rights, but the Dem-
brats have exerted every possible in-
fluence in opposition.
If every earnest Republican will use
‘his inflyence inside the party, some
good can be accomplished, but beware
of the Democracy.
Perhaps the: most important service
ot'Secretary Gage at the head of thé
treasury department has been the pro-
motion of sound financial sentiment
throughout the country, and his suc-
cessor will be well qualified to con-
tinue that useful work. It is one of
the advantages. of having a Western
‘man, whose views are unquestionably
sound, in that position for he will ex-
ert more influence upon opinion where
progress is most needed than a man
from the East, where sentiment on the
‘subject is already established.
‘The most ludicrous kick at the great
Dugbear, “social equilty,” which has
come to our notice, but which shows
that the “ruling passion is strong even
in death,” fs that if Will Mathis, white,
who was convicted of murder in Ox-
ford, Miss., and on Inst Wednesday sen-
tenced to be hung on Friday, Feb. 14
He has requested the judge to have'his
hanging at a different hour from that
already set for his co-partner in the
murder, Orlando Lester, an Afro-Amer-
fean, and also that he be hanged from
a different gallows. He says he is op-
posed to “‘social equality” and that is
why the request is made. We wonder
if his Satante Majesty will pay any at-
tention to these little {diosyneractes of
this damned, delectable disciple of
Cain when he arrives in his dominions
‘on St. Valentine's Day?

AT THE OLD CROSS ROADS
At the Grand Opera House. St. Paul.
One of the principal dramatic novelties of the current season is the production of the new play by Hal Reid, which was co-produced by his father C. Aiston's excellent company ofists. It is extremely doubtful if any other portion of our own country lends itself more readily to the purposes of the dramatist than the romantic South. Not meaning from the standpoint of the late war, for in "At the Old Cross Roads the scene was laid at a different place." The story that it reveals is highly dramatic; the situations and climaxes thrilling in the extreme, but the whole is so happily blended with unctuous comedy scenes and incidents as to charm all. Another important factor in a play of this character is the fact that it affords unlimited opportunities for an especially beautiful scenic display, to very charming toilette displays by the feminine portion of the company.
Manager Aliston is credited with furnishing a most complete and elaborate production, and best of all has been fortunate in securing an excellent company of ladies and gentlemen of established reputation who have many succeeds in the credit. Eash Williams, who played "Nettie Bish," sees's Pardner," essays the role of "Parepa," the octoonter; Jane Corcero, who was the "Tennessee" in the same production, has the part of "Annabell Thornton," the heirs to Magnolia Grove plantation. The other characters are in the hands of Mrs. Charles G. Craig, Louise Vallentine, Mary Rose, Edwin Walter, J. J. Person, Maurice Hedges, Thomas Ince, F. Mostyn Kelly, and James Hedges, who equal note. "At the Old Cross Roads" will be presented at the Grand Opera House all of next week.

"Chaise Fait in Chamberlain."
Joseph Chamberlain,1 according to the dispatches from London, is not at the height of his popularity just now, but his support in at least one district school unfamiliar. A well known language learner and the best part of an hour telling some young learners in Birmingham of the natural beauties around them, and had closed his talk with the question: "Now, who is it who makes these wonderful things?" "Mr. Chamberlain," was the instant response from a little girl up near the head of the class. For a moment the inspector was staggered. Then he said: "But surely you don't think Mr. Chamberlain could make a blade of grass?" "Oh," said the little girl, with a sudden conviction, "then you're a pro-Boer."

probability. An expression heard many times at the New York horse show was "to give a horse the gate." It meant that the judges decided that the horse was impossible as a competitor for the prize offered and ordered him out of the ring. And already this expression has been heard outside. One girl was heard to say to another: "I thought George and Sally were going to hit it off, but for some reason she gave him the gate." Girls in such cases used to give mittens, but the new expression has superseded the old one—New York Press.

JOKE ON THE JOKERS
How a Victim Prepared Some Choice
Morsels for His Friends
All Manayunk is chuckling over a joke played the other day by Al Rudolph, his victims being the patrons of a certain barber shop on in West Manayunk, says the Philadelphia Record. This place has the reputation of being the rendezvous of a gang of jokers, who confiscate anything in the nature of eatables or drinkables brought in by an unsuspecting customer. A man came in the other day with a dozen fried oysters that he was taking home as a peace offering to his wife, and when he was released from the chair every oyster had disappeared. Watermelons have been known to go the same way, and when Al Rudolph had an imported cheese stolen while he was being shaved he planned a deep, dark revenge. While in town the next day he went to a restaurant and ordered some deviled crabs made.

giving specific directions as to their ingredients. The component parts were sawdust, red pepper and bits of old rubber shoes, covered over with bran, slightly baked. Then he went to the barber shop and while he was being shaved he left the counterfeit crabs, neatly done up in a box, on a chair. When he went out he purposefully forgot them. In the place at the time were "Professor" David Wallace, Special Officer Harry Haggerty, Bill Lyle and Teddy Watchorn. No sooner had Rudolph gone than Lyle grabbed the package and opened it and a mad scramble ensured for the contents. In the meantime the joker was peering through the window and he says the scene that followed beggars description; that he never before heard such profanity and hopes he never will again.

It doesn't make any difference what you tell John in the way of a fairy tale, he will always go you one better. You may depend upon him, for he never falls. Two or three weeks ago I met John in a saloon in Long Island City. We got to talk about fogs, and I tried to impress him with the thickness of the fogs in London. I told him how people, standing on a street corner in London, could not see the lighted lamp on the post beside them; how people, after leaving their own door-step, could not find their way back home until the fog had lifted, and a dozen other stories all greatly embellished. But it was no use-I could not even seize him. This was the return I got:
