As to final arrangements and perfection of detail, the young men have spared no pains toward making the costumes, and the pleasure of eager expectancy, but remains to be emphasized by the climax of the event itself. AT THE OLD CROSS ROADS At the Grand Opera House. St. Paul. One of the principal dramatic novelties of the current season is the production of the new play by Hal Reid, which was co-produced by his father C. Aiston's excellent company ofists. It is extremely doubtful if any other portion of our own country lends itself more readily to the purposes of the dramatist than the romantic South. Not meaning from the standpoint of the late war, for in "At the Old Cross Roads the scene was laid at a different place." The story that it reveals is highly dramatic; the situations and climaxes thrilling in the extreme, but the whole is so happily blended with unctuous comedy scenes and incidents as to charm all. Another important factor in a play of this character is the fact that it affords unlimited opportunities for an especially beautiful scenic display, to very charming toilette displays by the feminine portion of the company. Manager Aliston is credited with furnishing a most complete and elaborate production, and best of all has been fortunate in securing an excellent company of ladies and gentlemen of established reputation who have many succeeds in the credit. Eash Williams, who played "Nettie Bish," sees's Pardner," essays the role of "Parepa," the octoonter; Jane Corcero, who was the "Tennessee" in the same production, has the part of "Annabell Thornton," the heirs to Magnolia Grove plantation. The other characters are in the hands of Mrs. Charles G. Craig, Louise Vallentine, Mary Rose, Edwin Walter, J. J. Person, Maurice Hedges, Thomas Ince, F. "Chaise Fait in Chamberlain." Joseph Chamberlain,1 according to the dispatches from London, is not at the height of his popularity just now, but his support in at least one district school unfamiliar. A well known language learner and the best part of an hour telling some young learners in Birmingham of the natural beauties around them, and had closed his talk with the question: "Now, who is it who makes these wonderful things?" "Mr. Chamberlain," was the instant response from a little girl up near the head of the class. For a moment the inspector was staggered. Then he said: "But surely you don't think Mr. Chamberlain could make a blade of grass?" "Oh," said the little girl, with a sudden conviction, "then you're a pro-Boer." Slang at Its Source. It is not often that the origin of a slang expression can be traced and when its pretended pedigree is related it usually has a sound of inherent fond UNCLE TOM Uncle Tom's Cabin Comp probability. An expression heard many times at the New York horse show was "to give a horse the gate." It meant that the judges decided that the horse was impossible as a competitor for the prize offered and ordered him out of the ring. And already this expression has been heard outside. One girl was heard to say to another: "I thought George and Sally were going to hit it off, but for some reason she gave him the gate." Girls in such cases used to give mittens, but the new expression has superseded the old one—New York Press. The race must beware of false prophets, who claim to be friends in time of prosperity. JOKE ON THE JOKERS How a Victim Prepared Some Choice Morsels for His Friends All Manayunk is chuckling over a joke played the other day by Al Rudolph, his victims being the patrons of a certain barber shop on in West Manayunk, says the Philadelphia Record. This place has the reputation of being the rendezvous of a gang of jokers, who confiscate anything in the nature of eatables or drinkables brought in by an unsuspecting customer. A man came in the other day with a dozen fried oysters that he was taking home as a peace offering to his wife, and when he was released from the chair every oyster had disappeared. Watermelons have been known to go the same way, and when Al Rudolph had an imported cheese stolen while he was being shaved he planned a deep, dark revenge.
