Let us alone and attend to our own business. The Boers will fight till they are at least they say it. We will continue to hew to the heet the chips fell where they ay. Whats the matter with William's and Walker's show? There are some people in this sold who always makes them' lives the hero of their own story. The Congressional excitement over and now we are ready for the next turn. The Republican party stands for good Government for instance the nomination of Chas- urtis. A fair and honest consideration just what all persons want they don't like the idea of some persons having it all and other's have none. Justice is all we want The State Ledger. Thus far there will be some changes in the Representative department of Jackson County. There are at present two avowed candidates for the place Messrs Flynn of Mayetta, and Mayor Sarbach of Holton. As times moves on it is plainly seen that young blood in the person of Mr. Sarbach will cut quite a figure in the race for this office. Mr. Sarbach is a young man of more than ordinary ability and if elected will make a model representative. He is at present the mayor of the city of Holton, and the people are loud in praise for him from one end of Jackson County to the other. If Mr. Sarbach is sent to the Legislature from his district, it is conceded that he will be the youngest and most brilliant young man that ever graced the halls of our Capital where all our state laws are made. In fairness to him, he will make a model representative. He is also of the firm of Sarbach and Sone of Holton, general merchandise. He is being greatly encouraged by a large number of his admiring friends of all classes. We have never lost any support on account of what some say of us, The "Smokey Row" individuals will find no space in the newspapers for notoriety this is election time. To tell it about town that this and that paper has no influence that man had better not been born for the good they now are doing. The importance of a man's record is always up to date when he is a candidate for office. Some men who aspire fot office in the meantime get uneasy and know they will be defeated and hence they talk doubtful. There is a certain man telling that all the colored peo le are in favor of him except the editor of this paper. Of course any fool can see that we must be it from the simple fact that we have several thousand readers. Notwithstanding the whims and notions of some candidates for office they have become convinced that we are a little disfigured but still in the ring and above all, here to stay. There is a certain official trying to predominate the politics in this county. He is greatly in favor of Charley Fellows for County Commissioner. To show him we are dead on, will he tell us a secret about the withdrawel of a certain man? Col. H. J. Bevelle whose name is well known as a candidate for Probate Judge is still making votes for that office. There is no man who has a better record seeking this office and, the voters of Shawnee County may rest assured that they will recieve a fair recognition at his hands. Not withstanding what is said. We are laying down boys, the gig is about up-that shows that we are men. Since our experience has taught us that the less said is the easily mended, but we have said many things that may never be mended. The fact's in the case are thus; we must either sink or swim, live or die, survive or perish, go down or up—we are there with the big mit. We have received a fine supply of new type from Kansas City and that is an indication of prosperity. We are sure an omen of good times is not far hence There is a growing feeling it seems in the campaign for different candidates for county offices yet there will be nothing definite until a few more meetings are held. If some teachers would remain at their jobs and not attend politics when they were not infringing upon the rights of their pupils there would be less discussion(?) We ask that you read up on the issues, and always call for your papers as well as letters when at the Post-office. Whose interest is Councilman Morgan running in(?) What does he hope for(?) The fight between Mr. Doran and Mr. Nichol's seems to be getting at fever heat. It is only a question of time as to the result. A large Nichols meeting was in progress at Webers hall Friday night, and the Doranites held a fine meeting on Monday night; and on Thursday evening Mr. Doran made an eloquent speech to the Young Men's Political Club. State House TE LE R NOMAN; BUT RENDER JU MARCH. 27, 1900. W. C. S'PEPHENSON. Ex-member of the Legislature SURE TO WIN OUT. There is no question beyond a reasonable doubt but that Will Stephenson, Ex-member of the Legislature from this district, will win out on the day of the primaries. There i no question in the minds of the many friends of Mr. Stephenson, but that he has the best of the fight and for that reason he will be and must be nominated at our primaries. Not many years ago, Mr. Stephenson lft the farm and came to this city and engaged in the real estate business, and from there he has taken an active part in politics and he is a true man worker of the place. Mr. Stephenson stands at the head of the list. We hope there will be nothing on the part of the friends of Mr. Stephenson to get worried or lay down on the list vote is counted in his favor on April 14th; from the 2nd 3rd and 4th wards of this city, for County Commissioner. D. S. MYERS Who Will Be Elected Next Tuesday. The next Councilman from the 2nd Ward, if signs of the times point correctly, will be Mr. D. S. Myers, who will represent the laboring element to a great extent. Mr Myers is at preset in the coach department of the Santa Fe Railway Co., which position he has held for 15 years. Also he is prominent in lodge circles of this city, Laving been treasurer of Capitol Lodge, No. 3, for 13 years and a member of that fraternity for 17 years. All this goes to show whom you will vote 'or next Tuesday, and the standing of the man Mr. Myers is and active Republican. Having been urged to accept the endorsement by his many white and colored friend, he will succeed A. P. Benson, who is an avowed Democrat, and one who does not expect for the colored and white Republicans to vote for him. It the friends of Mr. Myers get out and do their duty, he will be the next Councilman from the 2nd Ward of this city. He is a taxpayer of considerable real-estate HON.W.E.FAGAN PROBATE JUDGE There is a growing inter st in the Candidacy of Mr. Fagan for Probate Judge he has always been a true and tried friend to our people and is not out of place to insist that he be rewaived on April 14th. It will be remembered that M. Fagan has never held any office in this County during his residence here and for that reason the voters of the various wards will not hesitate to get out, and rally to his support. BIG MEETING FOR DORAN HFLD AT WEBER'S HALL There was a big meeting at Weber Hall Monday evening of last week. Many young men of the Santafe shops were present during the progress of the Doran meeting. There was one held it is said in Aron Jetmore's office. However a good colored vote was out an many stirring speeches were made. Mr. Doran made a fine eloquent speech, his policy was outlined and his points were highly applauded. We publish in this paper elsewhere the announcement of Mr. Thomas F. Doran who is making an active effort to become the next county attorney of this county. Mr. Doran is an able attorney, a fluent and eloquent speaker, if elected he will make a first class officer. J. W. Mergan whose candidacy meets with little or no approval, for Probate Judge. Why will he not get out of the way and leave the race to some one who may be elected(? --- THOMAS F. DORAN. dger. STICE TO ALL HON, CHAS, CURTIS W. H. RENOMINATED MARCH 20th 1900 To Congress for the Fifth Time. Cowardice is one of the worst things we have to deal with among colored people. This way of selling out to merely reach the point is of little force the people are always on to such stuff and will support nothing but a pure and undivided principle. Since the organization of colored clubs few are able to state correctly their political faith. Hence a great change has taken place. Charley Fellows, well you all know him. One paper says he has employed thousands of laborers—well you all know him, who would believe that he is not a candidate of the Leland gang. Is he? Find out please. The colored people should vote for a man who will accept the endorsements of a Negro for a political office which he is able to fill "Our flag is still there." is the title of a patriotic song. But too stick shows that we are still here. Neither dead while many has dammed us, yet through all those sleepless nights, the editor loses none. This shows on its face that we must have a few friendly advisors The Young Men's Political Club met on Thursday evening and many speakers were present. Among them Messrs. Doran, Nichols, Stephenson, Harrison, Dolman, Vanorsdel and Jewell. There are some good colored people in the ranks of the colored population. But there are a string of decent ones, who, like a cow that has given a bucket of milk and kicks it over. So you see that many good colored people are to be blamed for what the cheap class of them do. Thos. Quackenbush is a Candidate for Street Commissioner Subject to the decision of the voters at the City election held in the city of Holton April 3rd 1900. STREET COMMISSIONER HOUTON KANS. Quite a bit of interest is being shown in the fight for Street Commissioner. The race at present is between Messrs Quackenbush and Wiley, and they are marshaling their forces, however it is conceded on all sides that Mr. Quackenbush will win out with votes to spare. There is opposition to Mr. Wiley from fact that he has held the office more than five years, which of course this will help the election of Quackenbush. The large colored vote (doubly) as the ladies are allowed to vote counts largely in favor of Mr. Quackenbush, and for that reason it shows on its face if Mr. Quackenbush stands all right with his race, it will be all smiles for him. --- FOR We guarrantee the people who advertise, quick returns—most reliable news paper a mong all classes. FOR LEGISLATURE CITY DISTRICT We take pleasure in saying to our many readers this week that Mr. Ed McKeever has an opponent in the person of Mr. Albert K. Vitson, the Grand Secretary of L. A. F. and A M. of this city. Mr. Wilson is not what the public would style as a politician, yet capable and eloquent, he has been a resident of this city 21 years during which time he has always been a Republican. He is the present Secretary of the above organization and ranks high among all classes. If elected this fall every one may feel proud that his heart will be found in the right place. For some time the field has been canvassed seeking a suitable representative for the place which has been held two terms by Ed McKeever; and now the public will exercise the right of suffrage to the change. It will be remembered that McKeever seeks a third term with nothing to show during these two term.s, he has attempted to represent this district and as we all know you are opposed to his policy, it is safe to say that Mr. Wilson will be easily nominated for the next Representative of the City District, 3rd 4th and 5th wards of this city. JACKSON COUNTY COUNTY ANNOUNCEMTS. I am a candidate for the office of City Attorney at the city election held in the city of Bolton April 3rd 1900. M. A. Bender. I am a candidate for Clerk of the District Court of Jackson County, subject to the decision of the Republican Convention. Arthur Woolverton Mr. Arthur Woolverton For Clerk of the District Court. JACKSON COUNTY: If signs of the times point correctly Mr. Arthur Woolverton a Jackson County reared young man will be the next Clerk of the District Court. Mr, Woolverton has lived in Jackson County the greater part of his life, he is a young active Republican in all its deliberations He graduated from the law department of Campbell University in 1899. Hence he is now looking after his interest 7 miles from Holton the County seat of Jackson county. He is a brilliant young man for the place and is being supported by many prominent people of all classes of his County. He will be a strong man for Clerk. HOLTON The general feeling among all classes is Tomas Quackenbush for Street Commissioner of holton. he will be easily elected. Martin A. Bender, the young and capable gentlemanly attorney of holton is gaining hourly for city attorney of holton. The fact of Mr. J. D. Meyers having decided to re-enter the race makes the fight between Messrs Bender, Noble and Meyers. however with the support of the many friends of Mr. Bender he will undoubtedly succeed in the election.
