We don't only want to be vincicated, we want to be nominated all the young men who can read and write we are sure will consistently consider our proposition and as our chances are as good as a "Jew" or a Gentiie they deserve the right to defend us at the polls June 1st regardless of honey, boodle or any promise that may come from the lips of immissaries schemers or cohorts if the enemy who have planned to bar us from getting a chance to receive the many friends votes who have made up their minds to enter on us. The State Ledger. DO RIGHT--KNOW THAT YOU ARE RIGHT; FEAR NOMAN; BUT RENDER JUSTICE TO ALL. Shawnee county politics are becoming rotten in fact you must if you want justice, demand it. For a time it looked like we would not make the race but a rally has came over us and we are in the fight to a finish. We are not trying to deceive you we are always willing and ready to do that which is for our best interest and a fair vindication is all we want. We don't propose to let a few swell head non important class of politicians run us to suit them. Don't say we have no show just wait until the vote's are counted we believe there will be a few surprises, We may not be kindly disposed to put up $60,00 but if we get the nomination we will be kind to those who said we must pay it or get out of the race. A develish lot of nonsense Some of our colored friends will please understand that we mean to stay in the race and as we have told you our name will not be printed on the official ballot, they can make use of the pencil long enough to write our name. Hence our chances are equally as good as any candidate in the field. There are none sure of nomination but those that are there. One of the best known men in Shawnee county is Frank C. Bowen who wants to be County Treas He is an old soldier and a man of much experience his knowl. edge of the books n that department need no information or introduction, hence his chances for the office is getting better every day we predict for him a large vote. If nominated and elected he will give perfect satisfaction. While other parties have said they are sure of the nomination just tell them to hold on we have another shot. Remember the fight for County Clerk is between O. K. Swaze, "Doc" Newman and Fred L Jeltz the editor of this paper. We mean business. We don't mind being bullyr gged but we do mind the way fellows have lied to us for mercenary re sons in the near future we shall see. If we are successful in our attempt to be nominated we will not be worrying about the office but we shall be most certain to be elected in November as we think we are entitled to it. The enemies who have fought us and are still fighting us will soon be through with the job and they will say its my turn next - please don't tread on me. Those fellows who know they are sure of being nominated and can't be beaten will awaken June 2nd and say thunder struck me last night and I am afflicted for life by its shock. Now watch and see, we will be vindicated if it takes all our nerve. There are two excellent men who wait to be county commissioners from the third district of this county compiling all the wards and townships south of the river. They are Oscar C. Skinner and Geo. A. Anderson. Either of these men are alright. TOPEKA, KANSAS, MAY, 25. 1901. Few men in Shawnee county does not know and re mem ber Will S. Eberle, better known in these days of military domination as Capt Eberle. He is Shawnee county stock of the first class He has worked his way up the hill. We might say he was a poor boy, but now he is not regarded as a poor boy but how he obtained through his abilit y honest and business like manner. He has risen to the ladder of fame. Capt Eberle was for many years chief clerk in the Kansas Lions and Trust Company and gave perfect satisfaction. He was appointed deputy county Treasurer by Capt. Phillips a few years ago and since that time has given satisfaction in that capacity. He is a capable competent man and knows books to the letter. Shawnee county feels proud of Capt. Eberle and it looks fair to us that the Capt will be nominated. It he is successful he will be easily elected. We predict a clear field and success for the Capt in our primaries June 1st. We Sball Puni h Cur Enemies. We are surprised at certain Negro Leaders who claim they want Representation and are supporting a Gentile or a "Jew", anything to defeat a man of their Race. This class of Alecks need never come to us, or hint the fact they are race men, when we know they have been meddling in the fight against us for Clerk, simply because we don't call them Lord.—We don't think any Negro who has the name of Leader in this city are any better than we are, and when they try to pre-eminent themselves, they should Remember that we don't have to fall down and call them great men. The sensible colored man and the good white man will endorse our protest, and we don't have to support "Jews" for promises, and in the end it fizzles out to nothing. As some of our colored men who call themselves leaders are promoting the "Jews" interest they will ask the question later on, what shall we do with Milt Stoker(?) who is doing every thing boldly and slyly for the 'sneeny." Negroes are very foolish, but sensible white, vote intelligently. SOMETHING ABOUT W. F WEBER Mr. W. F. Weber, the popular grocer, came to Topeka 23 years ago and settled in business in a small way. He at that time was working himself up the ladder of fame and he was the welcome employer of several colored men in his business, many of them learned trades through his kindness to them and masterly informing conduct, hence they have not forgotten him, and today they speak of him in words of praise and revere his name. There are many things that can be said of Mr Weber as a straight forward business man. While we all have peculiarities from natural causes and our many curiosities, they may be possessed vet honesty takes its place in the hearts and minds of a fair public and it will speak for us and rank sup eme. He is noted as a fair dealer and a man of honest convictions whose integrity stand above reproach. If nominated and elected in November he will no doubt continue in the future as in the past. J. B.MARSHALL. For Register of Deeds, J. B. Marshall is a candidate for Register of deeds. It is not absolute neccessary to give an extensive sketch of Mr. Marshall, he is well known to all ot us however we may say a few facts of him. Before Topeka was honored with a fire department Mr. Marshall was one of the earnest promoters of it and worked night and day to see that the colored people were represented. He was successful in his efforts that Topeka have a colored fire department. After completing this piece of hard work in the interest of our race, he was finally elected councilman from the first ward and held that position for six years during which time he was president of the council four years, it came to his notice of emoyloying colored men as policeman and he was the first man to vote which gave Mr. Kern a position on the force which has been kept up and fostered to this day There is not a man in Shawnee county who will not speak well for Mr. Marshall who has always been true and tried. Mr. Marshall also lended his assistance more than once to assist the colored people in a beneficial way, he has given his noted band to their assistance and refused to accept pay for services rendered. He asks the people to nominate him Register of deeds which place is won and much deserved by the famous John Marshall. Primarie June 1st, come out help him. BERT LUCAS FOR SHERIFF. Bert Lucas is making a fight for sheriff and, from the way the news is flying in Topeka and Shawnee county he is getting there in good shape. Bert Lucas we have known for many years and to say the least he is a good boy. He is honest and fair, he has always worked for a living and Topeka is proud of him. He is at present identified with the Cudahay Packing Co. of Omaha. We believe it Mr. Lucas is nominated and elected he will make a good officer as he has had plenty of experience in that capacity heretofore. Mr. Lucas seems to be the favorite among the young men of Topeka and Shaw ce County and their is nothing in the way to indicate that he will not be satisfactory to all of them. Bert Lucas is Shawnee county stock and has made his way up the ladder of fame. We don't believe there is a young man in Shawnee county that has more friends than him. He will command a big vote. For REGISTER of DEEDS T. V. Coddington candidat for Register of Deeds is an old soldier worthy of any and all support might be conferred on him at the primaries. Mr. Coddington has lived in Shawnee county many years, and has had a great deal of experience in the line he seeks. It nominated and elected he will give perfect satisfaction in the Registers office. He is making a clean campaign one that by all means should be commended and it looks reasonable that he will command a good vote at the primaries June 1st next. JELTZ VOL. 9, NO. 26 FREDL.JELTZ FORCOUNTYCLERK Our many white and colored friends may understand that I mean business and shall stand as a candidate for Cleek of Shawnee county, I am sorry to state the fact that the executive committee pertaining to the County Central Committee through opposing candidates and friends, dictators and street loafers placed an enormous assessment on the candidates for clerk, register of deeds, sheriff and treasurer, in so much that overone half of the candidates previously mentioned have dropped from the race. We regard $60.00 as excessive and far too much and will not think of complying with said committee, but nevertheless those parties and friends who have so kindly encouraged us all along amid the several races will have the pleasure of voting for us by writing our name on blank space of the official ballot that will be used on the day of primaries, Saturday June 1st, 1901. We admire firmness, honest bravery and manly conduct on the part of all men. And as a colored Republican all my life I think I am entitled to the same suffrage and consideration June 1st at the polls as a "Jew or Gentile," or any other American citizen which act I trust will meet the approval of my many white and colored friends. I further state that no citizen can be barred from voting for me whether he can't read or write, tor it is the duty of the judges of elections to give all men a right to their choice and show them correctly the proper course to pursue when asked by said citizens. We take pleasure in introducing our many readers the name of Dr. H. H. Keith, who recently announced himself as a candidate for County Coroner. While it may seem a little late with some of them, yet Dr. Keith is well known throughout Topeka and Shawnee County, as he has been a general practicing Physician and Surgeon since coming to this city. He was formerly surgeon for the M. K, & T. R. R. at Mineral, Kas for a number of years and gave satisfactory services. It Dr. Keith is nominated and elected he will add strength to the Republican Ticket, as he is a devoted Republican and has been all his life.—Dr. Keith is especially favored and liked by all the medical fraternity of this city. If he is nominated and elected his judgement will be regarded as being satisfactory by that eminent body.—The Primaries are Saturday next. King Edward Purchases Picture An interesting picture has just been purchased by King Edward VII. It was painted by the Empress Frederic, then princess royal, in 1855, to be sold for the benefit of the widows and orphans of the soldiers who fell in the Crimea.
