INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR SHERIFF.
ANNOUNCEMENT
I am a candidate for Sheriff of Shawnee county on the Independent ticket for the fall election. I have lived in this county for many years and have a wide acquaintance. If I am elected I shall do all in my power to carry out the duties of the office.
EDITORIAL
There is no rose without its thorn. A man who is astonishing the west with his investments and successful managements of big properties has had it told on him that he was run out of Kansas, City, for running a lottery.
It is not strange that scientist cannot agree about the ingredients in the male beds of Trego county. In legal proceedings where insanity is the plea doctors swear every old way. You cannot get expert testimony in a n y case.
The prophets are divided. One halt of them say they have never known two dry years together and the other half contend that one dry year is apt to be followed by another. This is end less chain or prophecy and can new be settled.
Kansas is in the lead again. It is greatest patron of the circus any state in union. The circus appeals to the heart of the average Kansas man as nothing else can do. It offers him a new view of life, and life in its most grotesque form at that. Ex.

HON. GEO J. BARKER
FOR MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATURE 13th DIST.
Hon Geo J. Barker of course is well known to all of our readers hence it is not absolute necessary to give him an extensive notice however he wants to go back to the State Legislature to take up that part of the work he left off when he was there as its able speaker,
Mr. Barker is an able exponent of the cause of republicanism and wherever he goes he has a wide circle of friends.
When he was in the house before as their speaker he was begged with many compliments on the members of that body.
Geo J. Barker has in him a kind heart and he will cut much 'ice' in the coming contest.
VETERAN A. S MARBLE
OF SEDWICK COUNTY FOR
REGISTER OF DEEDS.
The subject of this sketch came
from New York state. He is a
veteran of the Civil War, enlisted
in 1861, and mustered out in '66.
His father was a friend to the
colored people and was in many
ways instrumental in their free-
cation, also his father voted the
first republican ticket in St. Joe
county Michigan. He was 2nd
sentient in the army and gave
alliant service.
Two years ago he was nominated in the fall of that year he was defeated only by 57 majority his time it is believed he will and the register of deeds ship.
HON. JEPP RYAN
MAYOR OF LEAVENWORTH.
Mayor Jepp Ryan of Leavenworth is the right man in the right face. DON'T FLATTER YOURSELF.
If you are a brakeman, don't claim that you are as good a railroad man as the general manager. In this country it is said that one man is as good as another, but it is not true. Certain men are above you by reason of good behavior, better sense and better workmanship. No use to combat the truth. Recognize your superiors, learn from them; do not toady to them but learn from them. Every successful man is successful for a reason; he has fewer bad habits than unsuccessful men; more industry: more order. It is an uncomfortable truth but important. Do not sit in the shade and say you're as good as the man who is working away out in the sun at five dollars a day while you are looking for a job at a dollar and thirty cents; Pattern after his good qualities; you can't injure him by abusing him.
There is always a demand for good men. If you are agood man you will have no time to sit around and abuse industrious people; you will have a good job. You flatter yourself too much and not one of your acquaintances hasever told you the exact truth, Too much flattery going on
In connection with his coroation festivites youngKing Altuno of Spain will wear fifty different uniforms, and orders for them have been distributed among all the leading tailors of Madrid. Several of the uniforms to be worn by the young sovereign are described as wonderfully picturesque, beautiful and closely copied from the medieval garments which have been kept in the Escurial. Ex
Young King Alfonso of Spain will be invested week at Madrid with the British Order of the Garter by King Edward's solider, brother, the Duke of Connaught, who is to represent England at the coming of age festivals. One of the foremost young men in the newspaper world is Hon. Leford Brady, who for years has been editor and proprietor of the LAWRENCE DAILY and WEEKLY WORLD. In him is a fine type of manhood, a hustling young man who came as it were a poor boy with nothing but a collegiate education. Young Brady started out in this cold world of ours "where weeds grow up with the fairest of flowers."
Coming to Lawrence from other parts he began the publication of the WORLD, today it is far above the average newspaper in this great state: hence young Brady should be highly commended for his sterling worth. He is today esteemed by all who know him. He has two great newspapers he has moved on the ground floor of one of the finest buildings in Lawrence, he has a great force, he pays out large sums of money to his employees on account of services rendered on these two papers.
Now as he has begun to see the light of day he of course like other great men would like to go to the legislature to represent his county in many respects, hence the people are speaking in words of praise for him and when the time comes it will be seen that Mr. Brady will be a formidable feature in the convention.
MR. ALBERT PENMAN
A LEADING WAITER
One of the prominent young
coloreau men in Topeka is Albert
Penman formerly of Kentucky
although it can be easily said that
he is a Kansas reared young man.
Penmau came here when a small
boy and having worked his way
up the ladder of fame evidently
makes him one of the foremost
young men of his class in the cul-
inary line. He has served as waiter
of many prominent functions been
head waiter of Hotel Throop
several times and he is still there and
has been 12 years.
VOTE FOR
Haines Saturday
Saturday next is the day in which a hard fought battle will take place in all the precincts north Topeka and north of the river between present county commissioner S. H. Haines and old "Dad Stewart" the people will do just what they have always done and that is to give Mr. Haines his second term a man who will refuse to vote for an honorable citizen a second term should always keep out of politics himself - hence any officer ordinarily should have his second term.
A. W. ARMSTRONG
Mr. A. W. Armstrong of Eudora, township is one among the most prominent and reliable gentleman of Dougus county. He has lived there 17 years where he owns large interest. When he was an officer for the county he always looked after the interest of the colored people. He wants it to be Register of Deeds to succeed Geo. F. Soxman, and the entire county populace black and white are for him.
Hon. E. T. Riley, one of the nices to young republicans of Douglas county is a candidate for the legislature. He has always been a true friend to the colored people. When he was in the House before he stood by them and as he only wants a second terms things are coming his way.
J. R. GR1GGS
Mr. J. R. Griggs for county commissioner is one among our best citizens of Lawrence everyone knows him. The only thing he says that must be opposed in this fight is his opponent has only been a republican 40 days and he has been one all his life. He asks the votes of his many friends.

M.A GORRILL FOR COUNTY ATTORNEY OF DOUGLAS COUNTY. The republicans of Douglas county are preparing for the coming primaries which will be held later on. They have some very efficient men in the field for the respective offices.
Among the prominent men are Hon. M. A. Gorrill, one of the prominent young lawyers who has been identified before the Douglas county bar for many years. Mr. Gorrill is a "Simon pure republican and has did much for the promotion of the city of Lawrence, his home. The colored people are very favorable to him, hence he will go into the convention with a host of friends from all sides. It is the duty of the good citizens or Douglas county to nominate for court attorney as good material as they now have, hence in the person of Mr Brownell the present county attorney he has made an efficient officer, he knows the law.
The same can be said of Mr. Gorrill who is young man equally as active and qualified to fill the position he seeks. The State Ledger takes pleasure in introducing him to its lar ge number of readers in Douglas county as the next county attorney of that county.
The name of Hon. Jack Watts need no introduction, hence he is a candidate for re-election,
Mr. Watts who asks for re-election is in favor of the new court house site being north of Watkins bank the tract is free for the same, and the people of Douglas county and Lawrence endorse him to the letter. He has many friends who will stand by him.
Dr. L. B. Powell, the county coroner, by appointment by Gov. Stanley is a candidate for the republican nomination. Dr. Powell has been a resident of Lawrence for about four years came here from Stockton Kas; has made many friends here, While not in active practive, he is a man of extraordinary ability and experience, and is quite competent to "sit on" you if you need the service of the coronor. He is an old soldier and has a good record as a physician, as a citizen and as a soldier. His friends confidentially expect him to succeed.

A Nasty Practice.
A nasty practice is what the Chicago Inter Ocean calls the pasting of repeated layers of wall paper, one upon another, thus covering up the fifth and germs of disease that may be propagated in the very absorbent and decaying mass of flour paste, paper, animal glue colors, etc.
Their own opinions of eminent health officers and sanitarians, urging that such practice should be stopped by legal enactment, and also take occasion to say that these sanitarians recommend Alabastine as a durable, pure and sanitary coating for walls.
The Inter Ocean says: "This is a very important question, and, as it costs nothing to avoid this danger, why take any chances?"
How much of the alarming spread of smallpox and other diseases may be due to unsanitary wall coverings?

Lost His Rheumatism By the use of a bottle of St. Jacobs Oil.
SERGENT JEREMIAI MAHER, of Ardac, Royal Irish Constabulary, says: "My friend, Mr. Thomas Hand, has been a great sufferer from rheumatism in the back and joints for the last four years, during which time he has employed many different methods of treatment, but obtained no relief whatever, and for the last two years has been unable to walk without a stick, and sometimes two sticks, and was in great pain constantly. I induced him to procure a bottle of St. Jacobs Oil, which he applied with the most astonishing and marvellous effects. Before he had finished using the bottle of the first bottle he could walk readily with the aid of a stick and after a few applications from the second he was free f om pain, and has been ever since and although fifty years of age and a farmer, he can walk and work without experiencing any pain or difficulty whatever."

INTERESTING RELIC OF PIONEERS
Stove That Was Used In First Capitol
Building of Waco, Texas
C. S. Johnson of Castle Rock tells the Fennimore Times: "I have in my possession what I consider an interesting relic. It is the stove that was used in the first capital building in Wisconsin in territorial times at Belmont and in which the first legislature convened. How did I obtain possession of it? Why, Judge Dunn, the first judge of Wisconsin, left it to his son, John, who used to farm at Castle Rock, and he sold it to the school in Gas Hollow. When a new schoolhouse was built several years ago the old stove had to make way for a more modern and new one and I bought the old one. It is of a peculiar and very odd shape and I doubt if another one like it can be found in all this country. R is about 2x3 feet in size and consists of six pieces with an iron band around them. You can remove the band and it all comes apart. It is made of cast iron about half an inch thick. All the marks on it are the letters "St. M. Yes; it is a good heater in spite of its age. If the old capitol is over moved to Madison the old stove certainly ought to go with it."

It is reported from Tokio that the officer, Yamow Gowsky, who was in charge of the battalion of Japanese troops 200 of whom lost their lives in a snowstorm, has committed suicide by poisoning himself. The cause is stated to be that his father, a very old and respected soldier, wrote reproaching his son with having lost 200 brave men and being saved himself
A Persistent Candidate.
David Fotts of Wilkesbarre, Pa., who died recently, was regarded as one of the most interesting citizens of that city. For thirty-four years he was a candidate for every office in the county, both at municipal and state elections, but was never elected. He was always on the labor ticket and would announce himself a year in advance for the office he was seeking.
Sarcasm of Senator Ingalls.
Sarcasm of Senator Ingalls.
Since the Addicks-Dupont senatorial war in Delaware that little state has been made the target for a great many jokes, but none of them have equaled the sarcastic remark of the late Senator Ingalls. The Kanan said of Delaware that it was "composed of two counties when the tide was up and three counties when the tide went down."

IRRIGATION IN NEW MEXICO.
Hon. P. Bradford Perkins, the inventor of the Perkins water system, is new experimenting in New Mexico on behalf of the A. T. & St. F. R. R. to irrigate thousands of acres of land by his system. He writes: "A couple of years ago, while experimenting through the South, I found that by spending a part of my time in marshy neighborhoods filled with mlasma, my entire system was being slowly polished with hills and floods, over lost appetite and sleep. After taking quinine without benefit a friend recommended Dr. Caldwell's (Laxative) Syrup Pepsin. I used it three days and was so much better that I sent for six bottles and used it while in camp. I drove the poison out of my system cleansed my blood, restored my appetite, and am now in perfect health." Sold to all quirks and dealers in medicine, 50c and $1 bottles.
