Washington leading educator of his race EDITORIAL When "Xmas" comes don't forget get up and do a lot of cursing and have nothing to eat There are a rew scoundrels yet left who will steal rob or cut your throat because you will not keep then in your employ for stealing and when you meet them they play "big man" The cheapest "Stinker" in town is the fellow that has just made enough to get a common suit of clothes part on credit and promise to pay balance of course this class of "Fellows" are the biggest "Stinkers" in Topeka. There are a few business firms who snub our paper. Now what care we for that? If these confounded fellows who tell the Editor that they are "too busy" to fool with us we will give them a write up good and proper W. F. Weber the "present alderman" is going to make the race for mayor. He is a man who talks but little but is generally sure of his aim before he makes the leap. Col. T. W. Harrison who would make an excellent executive in the mayors chair declines to accept the honor conferred. The people who are interested in "mayors fight" are trying to "box Col. Hughes" and bring out "new timber." They claim if he runs they will bring out Mayor Parker and rumor says he will "wipe the e arth with him." The last issue of this paper contained a mention of a number of Candidates of the city court mayor and city marshall Mr. Fred Stone trees friends took exception to the fact that he is the leading candidate for marshall and should be re-elected. Fred M. Stonestreets friends are up in arms at the writer of this editorial because they claim that his opponents are parties to a scheme to elect the old members of the court and | "box him." They further allege that Mr. Stonestreet has made the beat officer they ever had and, that the candidacy of Stewart, Jackson et-al are simply trying to crowd him out of the field. With present conditions Stonestreet will not out and claims he has a sufficient number of friends to "land him" for two more years and we believhe's "keyrect." We have before us the above Mr. Frank Royal Wilson a young man who is a natural caterer and culinarist. After Mr. Wilson's apprenticeship under the veteran Henry Wilson his father, he went out into this wide world to "seek to find" for himself. And after a thorough knowledge of how to please the most skeptical in home cooking, at Joplin, Pittsburg, Kans City and cities of note, he returned to his former home in fact the place of his birth, and now he has settled down to business with those he has known since childhood. He has made the short order and restaurant business a success beyond a reasonable doubt, having full charge of the entire first floor of the Chiles building 114 E.7th St. and many a success is on. Readers of this paper are respectfully invited to read what Mayor Parker has done in the of elimination the Chur-h dedt for the "Colord People"at St.Johns. MAYOR PARKER'S GREAT KINDNESS Few people are able to underr stand what a kindness is, and what a kindness means. It means more than a passing notice during our late jubilee exercises. Mayor Parker played an important part much to the credit, honor and dignity of his office and his many constituents. The St John Church at 7th and Topeka ave., this city has been burdened with an enormous debt for many years but during the Jubilee Dr. F. G. Snelson, the worthy pastor of only a few weeks has reduced the debt to one half the amount that has stood against it for time immemorial. Dr. Snelson by a Christian effort sought the good graces of our city executive and not content with him contributing $22.75 out of his own personal fund, that executive Mayor, Albert Parker interceded for the colored people and by so doing had $1000 of the bonded debt released. Such a man is Mayor Parker and such a man is Dr. F. G Snelson. There is no longer a question in the minds of the colored people that Mayor, Parker is not their friend in and out of season thence it is needless to say that Mayor Parker's gift will be long remembered by the colored population of 8,000 in this city the fact of the Mayor releasing the $1,000 debt on the church and the Dr. Snelson raising $2,000 leaves the AL WILSON NARIST—114 EAST 7TH STREET St. John church in a very promising conition and $3000 only remains which will soon be cleared TOPEKA WATERC During the trying times nothing has been more perplexing than the water system of this city. Had it not been for the proper management by the heads of the department of this great company the public today would have been void of and immense water system. The City Council has under the trying times offered the Water Co., of this city 550,000, while the company wants just $1000 more which would be 650,000, this matter now is left to the judgement and discretion of the management of this company by its efficient heads, Col. J. W. O'Neil as president and Mr. Jessie Shaw as Secretary; for many years these kind gentlemen have looked after the affairs of this great company and the chances are that they may continue as far as the elimination of their franchise is concerned for the "proffered offer," the State Ledger takes pleasure in saying that in our next issue will be a new year and we hope to see the good officers of this company continue to prosper, as they are valuable benefactor to the city of Tapeka as each year this company spends large sums of money for the indigent poor. Ja Smith it is necessary to state one of Kans. "brightest genius" he served in the Civil War and ascended to the ranks of "Col" from a common private. He has only served a short time as assistant Ad. assistant General and it is generally expected that he will "hold the fort" for another two years Col Smith is well known in Kansas history and politics and is in every way capable the people of all classes will naturally expect his retention and it is hoped Mr. Kelsey the new appointee will retain the Col in during this Kansas in all its brillancy will be represented.
