I hereby announce myself as a candidate for re-election as a member of the City Council of the City of Topeka 5th ward subject to the republican primaries. EDITORIAL The only man who is not howling just now is the coal and ice man Senator McLaurgn of Miss. and the Hon. Patrick Henry are among the common people of that state People who are sent to preach should do so not 'but in"in fact o'their peoples business. We shall stand by those friends who has stood by us from time to time that we'll make your friends appreciate at a good thing. The Ledger knows no one by the color of their skin this is a fight with man and man hence every tub m u t stand on its on bottom. We intend to stand by our convictions, in fact we are convinced that the longest pole will knock " down the persimmons" The flight of Mrs. Minnie Cox down in Miss. shows while she and her husband might have lied about southern hospitalities it can be seen at a glance they did remain, if the south bern people was not going to harm her why did she take her flight(4) if she knew they was not going to harm her why did she "skip" she knew she and her husband did not tell the truth when they say that no indignity es were thrust upon them- Peter Heil who is spoken of for Councilman be is an old resident of this city he came here in 1859 he engaged in farming for many years now he is operating an extensive feed business at 210 West 6th st this Mr Heil will be acceptable to the vote's of the 3rd, ward. Historical Society The State Ledger. DO RIGHT--KNOW THAT YOU ARE RIGHT; E AR NOMAN; BUT RENDER: JUSTICE TO ALL. Some of the policeman should be placed on the back streets of our bung, not look after the joints. When you find a fellow always "boosting" you can find most any kind of character. The people have decided not to place any one in the Mayor's office who will hot help Topeka. The average American citizen is willing to die for his country in office. It isn't the girl who fires up quickest who makes the best match. The republican party is preparing for another primary election. Now the colored contingent needs to get on the side of their friends and all will be well. The State Leader is a factor in this fight. If you don't believe it just suub it and you will not be long in finding it out in the coming campaign. Now that we and our friends have frequently been turned down it would be well to know who the man is that you elect the coming spring. There are no "boss" papers bear this mind, they all have their friends, su porters and influence, please don't forget this in making up your "jewels." We have many friends in the present campaign, but shall take pleasure in looking them over and we shall soon decide who we shall. The jury in the of trial Jno C. Lowe found him guilty of murder in the second degree and his punishment will be arranged from ten to 100 years. There is a little nonsense in a few men's brains. They think they can kill any one, or commit any other heinous crimes and get off on the plea of insanity. Dr. McFarland's pulpit editorials are not the kind of stuff to bring sentiment in his favor. We have very little interest in a clergyman who talks politics all the week and on Sunday put on the "sanitified garb" for better things There are a number of good men before us, they are the mouth piece of the republican party. If you desire to turn them down for preference you can do so, but be sure you make no mistake—an injury cannot always be repaired The "Ledger" sincerely regrets the loss of the late Rev. w. L.Grant whose memory shall not be forgotten but shall be cherished in your memory for years to come; song may a good man's memory live in the minds of the members of the race. If there are any enemies in this tight who expect to give us the "cloven hoof" all good and well we will meet them at the "cross road "Work while you work" is always the motto of honest people but some people never work and they have more to say about good useful men then all the others combined. The sluggard has come to think that its a good time for him to remember to be wise. There are many deceitful persons in this world who "will laugh at your calamity and mock you when your fears comes. Giving on one hand and receiving on the other is just what we honorably expect. Don't get worried over us expecting business from you, we all have our enemies and our frie ds and if you don't know it, you will before the spring election: For sale two houses located on the Cor. of Jackson&Railroad streets Separate or together call and see me Mrs.P Durkin cor.Jackson&Railroad sts. N. Topeka. WE MOURN THE LOSS OF A GOOD MAN. In the death of Rev. W.L. Grant, or Kansas City Kans last Sunday, the Baptist Church has lost one of its foremost and best minsters of the present age the race one its foremost and most staunch advocates, the general public one of it's most etoquent politicians and orators. He was a preacher, politician, orator race advocate, t he a c holar and a gentleman. Rev. Grant was well known in these parts and well liked. He has visited this city quite often and on the 22nd of l a s ept. at the Emancipation celebration he was the principal speaker. Rev Grant was born in the state of Kentucky, thirty-six years ago, and therefore comparatively young-m an just entering into the prime of life. He entered into the ministry fifteen years ago. His first charge was at Lawrence Kan. He was general missionary of the Baptist Home Missionary Society for six years. His second charge was or the Shiloh Baptist Church at Topeka' Kans. His third charge was a t the First Baptist Church at Kansas City, Kans which charge he held with credit to himself, church and race until his sickness and death ended his career. Many of the federal appointments were due to the efforts of Rev. Grant He was never known to do any small or contemptible tricks and was void of gang and rule—Exchange President Roosevelts interest in the case of Mrs Cox of Indianola Miss, is very remakable Mrs. Cox one is of those Miss, colored girls who is entitled to all recognition that her standing and nature demands her husband has been in the employ of Uncle Sam for fourteen years and it looks like the president is right in not trying to "fire" an innocent lady because God saw fit to make her "colored" We are from the old and stinking rotten state Miss, but when we were their things were different in fact this is an awful cold world. This paper is open to recieve your announcements from this issue on and if you mean business, call and see us or send us your card, for same Business is business, now get "funny," we are not going to be humbuged, so you might as well make up your minds to that effect. Few can but say that Fred. M. Stone-street doesn't need re-election along with the other members of court Mr. Stonestreet is entitled to just Recogn- [Name] FRED M; STONSTREET Candidate for re-election as Marshal of the COurt of Topeka iton and the State Ledger endorses his candidacy as being a carful painstaking official we believe he will be Remembered at our coming Pr mary. JUDGE McCABE FOR— To the Republican Voters of Topeka; I am a candidate for renomination for judge of the Court of Tepeka, at the approaching city primary election. I feel the during that during the time I have occupied the position, the duties of the office have been discharge in a manner which has been satisfactory. Inasmuch as it is impossible for me to see personally more than a small proportion of the voters, I take this means of announcing to them that I am a candidate for the position, and of conveying to them my request for their support. ARTHUR J. McCABE One of the most competent Colored policemen ever patrolled a beat in this city is Mr. Chas. Bradshaw from the 4th ward who has a host of friends and has made friends since he been on the force MR. CHAS. BRADSHAW The 4th Ward Patrolman. he is an appointee of Councilman Weber and stands for him for the next Mavor of Topeka. Mr. Bradshaw and family reside in one of the most commodions flats in Topeka 215 West 5th st tity city. EX-COUNCILMAN JNO. ELLIOTT Excouncilman Jno. "Thus he said calmly, as he produced his handkerchief and wiped his face, "is a striking evidence of what I have always maintained—that pro slavery arguments are unsound. Ex.
