Bergundthal present member and president of the City Council is well known in this city he resides in the First ward his home and has lived in this City, for 16 yrs he came from the "Hoosier State" and for many years was with the J. T. Thomas Lumber Co. as its chief clerk, he was elected from the first ward to the city council in 1901 and has practically serve one term, he comes before the city primaries when they are he Mayor of "Topeka "The Ledger" can say if he is nominated and elected in April next he will make Topeka a model executive. A. BASS. Mr. A. Bass a steady employee of the "Capital Company" for 15 years died at his home on Spruce street. Mr. Bass was a good, kind hearted and conscientious gentleman, peace to him. The action of the administration in discontinuing the post office at Indianola, Miss., because the postmistress was forced to resign under threats of violence, entirely justifiable and right. It is the effective way of dealing with such wanton prescription and cruelty. The case was one of ruthless race prejudice and persecution The postmistress was a worthy competent and inoffensive colored wo an who had held the office without reproach or objection for several years. She was first appointed under President Harrison and reappointed under President McKinley. She has thus served acceptable through two terms and part of another and no criticism was made of her capacity or attention to her duties. The leading white people were friendly with out distinction of party, and it was only lately that the ruffianly element entered upon the persecution which com elled resignation to escape it. When the colored postmaster at Lake City, S. C., was murdered in the same lawless and vindictive spirit, the administration of President McKinley promptly discontinued the office. Every effort was made to convict the murders, but in vain. If the seitiment of the community did not approve their crime neither did it permit their punishment. When the argument was made that the whole body of the people ought not to be punished by being deprived of their mail facilities for the offense of a few, the answer was returned that a community which could not or would not protect a postmaster hearing the government commission was not entitled to a postoffice. After some years the office was re-established, but not until the locality had paid a heavy penalty for its toleration of lawlessness. DR. H. H.
