H.S. Nichol* The State Ledger. DO RIGHT--KNOW THAT YOU ARE RIGHT; EARN NOMAN; BUT RENDER; JUSTICE TO ALL. The escapage of Mont Godley who is supposed to have killed off officer Hinkley, is no admiring by the best of people. All murderers should be apprenended in the best possible manner, but it seems in this case that it was an even break. There are reasons in all things Hence Col. Hughes reasons with himself that he will be may or if he reasonably can make it. As we understand there is a little friction along the line of little importance when it comes to the mayors contest. The fight will be between Hughes, Bergenthal and Weder. Now see for your sel. There are a few grand rascals in Topeka who have the idea that they can "run over" decent families and the public must smile, ere long these tarantlers will be found and run to e a r t h. Congressman Curtis has gone back to the Nation's Capitol to make laws wherein the United States Senator should receive his majority by a vote of the people Mr. Roosevelt is not very much the monetary subject line many of his predecessors: most of our former President's acted as though the money was their chief object but with pleasure we can say Mr. Roosevelt thus in the advancement of his term has shown that he is the friend of all classes and money is not his object. A i the usual custom New Year may many adopt new resolution, of 'turn over a new leaf' as it may be called, which they intend to govern their life and conduct during the year and to their resultions are guiding stars, and they are able to profit thereby. On the other hand there are those who resolutions are as thin as tissue-paper and are torn assuder upon coming in contact with one most insignificant temptation. Ever human heart and mind should resolve to make this a year of peace, happiness ane property. Let the Negro especially resolve to attend to his own business, go to work, tell the truth, stop living and become a responsible citizen in the community in which he lives In our opinion the case of the colored postmistress of Indianola, Miss. whohas been intimidated to the extent of resigning her position as postmistress on account of color, tells us that notwithstanding, we are living in a land which abounds with churches, school houses, colleges and Institutions of learning, there are still those among who have not yet advanced far in the school of civilization. Presidents Roosevelts decision in the matter cannot be mistaken. Most probably he will enforce the revised status in section 5518. The affairs of Uncle Sam is run by men of brain and common sense, and not by a few lawless men who tears not God neither regard the laws of the land and who would fail to respect their own women unless forced to compulsion. Go to church and when you come back talk bont the joints: Bert Lucas the new Sheriff has gone to California to bring DeMoss back who escaped from prison over a year ago. The "Liiy whites" of Indianola Mis will in the fa. off future appreciate "Uncle Sam's" meanness by letting well enogh alone. There are several Mr. Works from Sumner and Cowley Counties at work at the State House. The Kansas Legislators will no doubt pass a law whereas a man doesn't drink dissipate in no form yet, he is guilty of some kind of devilment monkeying around families. The midwinter class of the Topeka High School had their graduating exercises this week and 42 hearts were 'made glad, Principle Whittemore is a great educator, DR. H. H. McLollan formly of St Marys Kans is now located at cor 5th and Kans. Ave where he will be found in the future. The "State Ledger" wants it under stood that there are men in this burg, who claim they dont drink, smoke nor chew yet they neyer stop until they can ruin every "honest girls, standing in the community if they are permitted to do so, this class of vipers are 'worst than the Devil'" This paper shall till the close of its mission keep its old place in the journalistic field, as a weapon in the hands of a "mighty power" For City Attorney Hon. Chas, F, Spencer the present city attorney is a candidate for re-election for a second term. Mr, Spencer is of the best and he feels that he should have his 2nd term, he has done creditab e work for the interest of Top ka, For City Attorney W, A, S, B, Bird the well know attorney announces to the voters of Topeka that he is in the race for city attorney, Mr. Bird has served in that capacity before and made a creditable officer, if nominated and elected again to this position he will conduct the affairs of the city as well or better than before Geo. Neil. Hon. Geo. Neil is too well known as a successful business man and cap talist to have any extensive mention he has made an excellent councilman of the 3rd.ward and its fair to state will have no opposition for reelection. Hon. W S. Bergundthal For Mayor. Hon. W. S. Bergundthal present member and president of the City Council is well known in this city he resides in the First ward his home and has lived in this City, for 16 yrs he came from the "Hoosier State" and for many years was with the J. T. Thomas Lumber Co. as its chief clerk, he was elected from the first ward to the city council in 1901 and has practically serve one term, he comes before the city primaries when they are he Mayor of "Topeka "The Ledger" can say if he is nominated and elected in April next he will make Topeka a model executive. August Palm. For Clerk Of City Court. Mr. August Palm who is a candidate for clerk of the court of Topeka has tive in this City 20yrs in all this time he has been a consistent republican can always supporting the regular nominees of the party and foult there battles at the poles, Mr. Palm is a Swede by birth but has long since renowned his allegiance to his mother country and is now a loyal American citizen, he s brick mason by trade and is one of the largest employers of labor in the city, he has always given Colored men work. And he says they have always stood by him, he hopes in the coming primary that his many friends will not forget him. THE CIGAR STORE Billy Williamson, 903 Mass St. we solicit the Home Trade. Brauds that lead, "Baby Ribbon" The city is filled with bums. Give us the devil if you please. Go to church if you want to. Remember you don't bluff us. Chas F. Spencer wants a second term for the office of city attorney. "Col" Jeltz needs his hair cut and his buggy bathed. The press which this paper is printed on has been broken several times in the present month. Dennis Shepherd, G. W. Jackson and Gaston of Ellsworth and Lewis of Wichita are now at the State House. Ed L. Good, clerk of Topeka a graduate in stenography and his books and facts of the proceedings of the court are the best that can be kept. It is a position where the law only requires an expert stenographer. Pricer of the capital force has been running down the mayoralty candidates to know how they stand on prohibition. A. BASS. Mr. A. Bass a steady employee of the "Capital Company" for 15 years died at his home on Spruce street. Mr. Bass was a good, kind hearted and conscientious gentleman, peace to him. The action of the administration in discontinuing the post office at Indianola, Miss., because the postmistress was forced to resign under threats of violence, entirely justifiable and right. It is the effective way of dealing with such wanton prescription and cruelty. The case was one of ruthless race prejudice and persecution The postmistress was a worthy competent and inoffensive colored wo an who had held the office without reproach or objection for several years. She was first appointed under President Harrison and reappointed under President McKinley. She has thus served acceptable through two terms and part of another and no criticism was made of her capacity or attention to her duties. The leading white people were friendly with out distinction of party, and it was only lately that the ruffianly element entered upon the persecution which com elled resignation to escape it. When the colored postmaster at Lake City, S. C., was murdered in the same lawless and vindictive spirit, the administration of President McKinley promptly discontinued the office. Every effort was made to convict the murders, but in vain. If the seitiment of the community did not approve their crime neither did it permit their punishment. When the argument was made that the whole body of the people ought not to be punished by being deprived of their mail facilities for the offense of a few, the answer was returned that a community which could not or would not protect a postmaster hearing the government commission was not entitled to a postoffice. After some years the office was re-established, but not until the locality had paid a heavy penalty for its toleration of lawlessness. DR. H. H. There was a fire in the business of Reynolds and Childers last week the damage amount to $150 Two years ago one of the hottest fights which came up in the Legislature was over the division court of Crawford county so that court might be held at Pittsburgh as well as at Girard. Pittsburg won out, but when it came up this session with a bill to establish a manual training school, Gira d stated a backfire by having a bill introduced providing for the establishment of a normal school at Girard. Of course it is manifest that both towns cannot get what they want and the old fight will be renewed. WHOLE AND RETAIL Milk Cream and Butter, Red Cross Butter a specialty. Both Tel 537, J. L.
