INTER-STATE Journal Kans..and Missouri. y F L JEUTZ. EDITORIAL We feel it our duty to say to you that we are for the most people for the most possible good. Cyrus Leland's visit to the nation's Capitol is marked with such significance that the state of Kansas will hereafter keep its eyes on him. Now that the general election comes on April 7th, it is generally understood that "Uncle Mike Heery" by that time will show his full speed. We yet hope to get even with a few grand rascals who cause us trouble and give others pain. Remember every dog has his day. Some laugh at a man's misfortune but noteless there is none perfect, and still they laugh. It is not the man that goes "saintly on Sunday" who is the best, by and by all these geese's will get theirs just the same. There are a few devils down here at Kansas City who will smell particular holl before April 7th for the manner and way they lied to us about their candidacy. The editor of this "sheet" has been out of the city and has grabbed a severe cold, for that reason we will not be able to say many kind words this week. A vote for nerry for marshall means a vote for the entire colored race. Mr. Heery is worthy of all honors of this kind and if elected which he has a good show will mean representation all the line he is a man with good business of his own and has been quite successful in this city. Honest Mike Heery will be elected next Tuesday if the people get out and take an interest in the election. It is not a "wet fight," it is the administration of the city of Topeka is at stake for the next two years; It does not mean joints, its motto is business, and if Heery is elected it will mean business. Stand up for "honest Mike" next Tuesday, Levenworth Notes City Treasurer Beeler is a candidate for re-election to the same office he now holds. It affords our readers great pleasure to say that Mr. Beeler is the right man for the place he has lived in Leavenworth so long and made such an excellent citizen that he does not doubt their confidence in asking for re-election. Mr. Beeler wants it understood that he has done his duty, he has a good re-ord and is not ashamed of it. He is before you April 7th for the office of City Treasurer and we believe when the ladie and gendlemen go to the polls that they will not ask any questions but stand by the those friends who have always stood by you. Vote for O. C' Beeler for Treasurer. MR.B.F.ENDRES for Police Judge There need be no extensive mention of B.F. Endres for the office of Police Judge, having served in the county attorney's office two years as an efficient deputy, give color to the fact that the young man is all right for the place. There is no question as to the popularity and fitness of Mr. Endres. He is one of the most competent HON B. F. ENDRES. young men in the city of Leavenworth and there is little question but that he will be elected. It is generally conceded that he has the best of his opponent, Chas. Bitochberger, who has held the office two years and as Mr. Endres is a young uncompromising republican and with his popularity he will be easily elected. The State Ledger. DO RIGHT--KNOW THAT YOU ARE RIGHT; E AR NOMAN; BUT RENDER; JUSTICE TO ALL. MR, J. P. BERRY of the First Ward for Marshal City Court At a recent meeting of the members of the convention of the opposition, Mr. J. P. Berry, a prominent First Ward man was nominated for marshal of the court of Topeka. Mr. Berry has lived in the First Ward so long till he need not be introduced. He is oefore the voters of his ward April 7th for the marshal's ip. The Ledger wants it understood that Mr. Berry is well qualified for the place he seeks and represents the colored. In view of the fact that the office will be minus a colored face unless he is elected, many of his friends are making an effort to land him for the place. If he receives the proper support at the polls in April next he will make the next marshal of the city court. There is no doubt as to his ability and fitness for the place, he has all the necessary qualifications of a college student, he has been one among the most successful merchants of his race in the city, he is a man who never waits for honors but goes ahead pushing his business and in so doing he is a successful man. M.GAMLOWSKI Wants to be First Ward Councilman The name of Matt Gamloski is not a new one, he has been a practicing shoe maker in North Topkaka for ten years during which time he has always been a Democrat. If he is elected in April next Mr. Gamloski wants it under stood that he will do all he can to remember all classes alike. He is well qualified for the place and wants to be elected. E. E. VENARD KANSAS CITY KANSAS Down here in the 3rd ward Mr. E, E Venard is running for the office of councillor against E, E Kampmier a well known Democrat. Mr Venard is a well known man to every one in the ward. It is generally expected that he will be successful on April 7th, Register and vote for him. The only trouble with the "colored man" he is too loyal and that causes him to be ill treated. What victory has the American white soldier won without the assistance of his colored brother(?) A change will come sooner or later relative to the times. We see more hard up people this winter than we have seen in years. This is our prosperity we have been "longing for." Atchison Notes. Judge Casey of Atchison is aspiring for re-election to succeed himself as Judge of the city court. The Judge has made a good official and every one speaks in words of praise for him. If he is re-elected which he no doubt will be, no one need doubt his ratings in the future as in the past. Stand by him. Marshal Flynn, who has served the city court less than two terms is out for re-election, he stands well with all classes and there is no doubt of his re-election as the Municipal Ticket will win in Atchison. Mr. James Orr, of course will be elected by a handsome majority, in fact he has but little or no opposition, he has given Atchison a fine Chief of Police, Mr. Sullivan and many colored people are employed in different ways in the city. Tim Donovan, the present chief of police has given Topeka a clean and fair administration and he has friends on all sides, Mr. Donovan is an honest, level headed sober minded gentleman and no better man than he could be retained as chief: he belongs to no clipue or ring, hes a gentleman- J. Let those monkies continue to give us a good time, we don't care for that, we guess we are as good as those monkies who have lied about us, don't see whv we are not. Senator Fillman, like other deeptiful white people would like to see a race war. They had one in 1898 with Spain, and the Negro gallantly stepped in and stood by the hateful white man. Now their bones lie bleaching on Sanjuan Hill and now there is peace and they, like Pitchfork Tillman have no use for the Negro. This is not the first time that the Negro has proved his loyalty to the flag that severally rebukes him. It make us tired when we read the deceitful lying papers that despises a Negro unto death, Has he not the same right to live as you white "scape goats?" Well we should smile. Now justice is justice and if there is any man in Kansas that believes in Mr. Tillman's doctrine, he should imminently emmigrate to South Carolina. Have common horse se se, oh God thou fools, you despise a Negro or account of h is color, not that he is not as smart as you, but oh he is a "Nigger" a poor old sinner that all a Nigger, Let race wars come and go, but we are here to stay woe be unto the scoundrel that starts it Mark these word E. Taschetta, the Democratic nominee for Mayor, is without exception the best politician in the city. In the past he has done more than any other man to keep the Democrats in power. Taschetta always keeps his promises, something very unusual with politicians. But it is this one thing more than any other that has given him much a strong hole on the ward workers. Taschetta has all the qualifications necessary for making a good mayor. He is not employed in any other business and can devote the whole of his time to the office. He is a good manager of men, a good judge of human nature and a good accountant and perfectly familiar with the workings of the city government. If elected mayor Taschetta will have more at stake than the City of Leavenworth. It he should cut down the expenses, give us cleaner streets and reduce our taxes then he could ask for anything in reason and the people will give it to him. If, however he should turn the Mayors office into headquarters for the Democratic machine and run the office for the benefit of himself and friends then he would be a one term mayor and would end his life as a ward politician. We have known Taschetta for a good many years and have admired him for the way he has stood by his brothers and his family, the efforts he has made to improve their standing financially and soooally, and we believe if elected he will be more than ambitious and that he will take pride in better the conditions of the city and by so doing better his own conditions and that of his family. We consider Taschetta a very strong man, the Republicans will have to nominate one of their best men if they expect to defeat him at the polls.—Ex. The busy readers of this paper will please go to the Court house and inspect the records to see who is the largest tax paver, honest Mike Heery or Bergunthal. Don't forget to look, this is important. Matt Gamlowski candidate for Cowlman from 1st ward and J. P. Berry are old prominent and reliable citizen MR. BERRY'S CANDIDACY. It will be remembered that J. P. Berry who is nominated for the office of Marshal of the City Court is one of Topeka most influential colored citizen, and it is not believed that he will be tired down at the day of the election, stand by him and do your duty. There is a meddlesome somebody going about telling me an things as usual. Christ said: 'That is without sin cast the first stone at her,' and so it is with a lot of grand rascals who are discussing the editor of this paper. A Lincoln Letter New Haven, Conn; John M. Crampton of this city has secured the original letter written by Abraham Lincoln in 1864 to the free state Governor of Louisiana, it is as follows: "Lexecutive Mansion, Washington, D. C., March 13, 1864.—(Private)—Thr Hon Michael Hahn-M. Dear Sir I congratulate you on having your name in history as the first free state governor of Louisiana. Now as you are about to have a convention, which among other things, probably will define the election franchise, I barely suggest for your private consideration whether some of the cojored people may be et inns, for instance, those who are evry intelligent and especially those who focffht bravely in our anks. They probably will help us some of the trying times to come to keep the jewel of liberty within the family of treedom. But this is only a suggestion—not to the public, but to you alone. THEO.
