Big Spring Drive on For Home Charities
VOL. 6
STAR 4
COLORED WOMEN WILL TAKE
ACTIVE PART IN BIG DRIVE
FOR HOME CLARITY
School Children Will Sell Tags For
Needy Here at Home.
Saturday, March 20th will be Tag Day in Tulsa and every able man, woman and child should be tagged by some one on that day. Patriot men, women and children are called upon to join in and help make that day a memorable one in the history of Tulsa. Tulsa has been called upon repeatedly to give money for different phases of war relief and we have all responded liberally. The Liberty Loans, the Baby Bonds and the War Saving Stamps, each have been supported by good Tulsans. When we were appealed to to give our money for the relief of the women and children of Belgium we responded with our usual liberality because we were willing to share our prosperity with the suffering humanity of war-ridden Europe.
But in this drive the human society of Tulsa headed by A. M. Welch, humane agent, we are called upon to give our money to help relieve the suffering right here under our nose.
You may not know it but it is a fact nevertheless that there is a large army of destitute women and children here in Tulsa, wards of our humane society, who need our sympathy and our help as much as some of the poor people of Europe and our obligation to those is greater nearer and dearer than our allegiance to any foreign people.
There is a constant and growing demand for clothes, food and medicine for these poor people who live here in our midst and our humane society is the only medium through which this demand may be supplied.
In our great desire to help the unfortunate people of Europe and our贪婪ness to "go over the top" in responding each call of our country, we have almost forgotten our own unfortunates who are with us every day. As a result the fund necessary for the humane agent to successfully prosecute this important work has become depleted and it is now imperative that something be done.
Hence the big tag day drive next Saturday. The campaign for this fund will be city wide and for the first time the colored people of Tulsa are invited to participate in the work of swelling the fund. No discrimination has ever been made in the work of the humane society of Tulsa under Mr. Welch and as long as he is head of this department there will not be.
Almost daily he is called upon to administer to the needs of some poor colored woman or children and he always responds in the same spirit of humane care and kindness with which he is want to serve people of his own race.
Under these circumstances we can not turn a deaf ear to this eager appeal for the unfortunate people of Tulsa. We do not wish to.
The Colored people of Tulsa will hold up their end of the burden. Everybody must be tagged next Saturday or be branded as the meanest kind of slacker.
The ladies of this part of the city will help conduct the campaign. Every school boy and girl, every teacher, every preacher, every member of every church, every storekeeper, every doctor, every lawyer and everybody else are expected to respond to this call. For the sake of our own unfortunates let us help.
If you do not wish to wait till tag day to help the cause you may leave whatever amount you wish to give with Mrs. A: J. Smitherman at the Tulsa Stur office and she will give you a tag or reserve one for you. Mrs. Smitherman has been requested

FATHER OF THE ROWE ROYS IS
ACQUITTED
Evidence Insufficient to Hold S. D. Rowe for Murder of His Son
S. D. Rowe, father of Webb Rowe, who was shot and killed by his brother Douglas, Sunday, February 9th, was acquitted last Monday after a preliminary hearing before Justice Ed Warren, because the evidence introduced was considered insufficient to hold him for participation in the crime. Douglas was held without bond to await trial in the district court.
It is a strong belief among those who are acquainted with the facts in this case that more trouble will follow. Anticipating this Virgil Rowe and his father have been placed under peace bonds.
AGED MAN DIES OF ASTHMA

Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Zion Baptist church tomorrow. The dead man leaves a wife and nine children surviving, all of whom live here, except one who lives in Maskogge.
BAPTISTS GET TOGETHER
Committee of Twenty-Five Turns Over Publishing House to National Convention
According to a telegram sent by Rev. J. H. Abernathy, pastor of the First Baptist church of this city, from Memphis, Tenn., where he went early this week to attend the "Get Together" meeting of the National Baptist Committee, to O. W. Gurley and other members of his church, the committee of twenty appointed to harmonize the factions in the National Baptist Convention has recommended that the publishing house at Nashville be turned over to the National Baptist Convention of which Rev. C. C. Morris is president.
This will probably settle the biggest denominational fight ever charged against the race.

REV. WHITAKER OUT FOR THE
DEMOCRATIC TICKET
Rev. R. A. Whitaker, pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist church, has announced himself irrevokably for the democratic tienet and is espousing the cause of democracy among his followers. He was a conspicuous figure in the primary campaign and will take an active part in the grand wind-up, which ends Tuesday, April 2nd.
"I can't swallow the insults and injuries the republican administration has heaped upon us," says Rev. Whitaker, in explaining his change of politics.
Black Cow Oil Man Speaks to Tulsans.
J. E. Thompson, secretary-treasurer of the Black Cow Oil and Mining company, was in the city Wednesday and Thursday of this week in the interest of his company. Mr. Thompson met a number of the representative citizens here in the Star office and explained in detail the plans and purposes of the company and the wonderful opportunities the oil business holds out to our people. Several subscribed for stock in the company and others will subscribe in the near future. One of the plans of the company is to open a branch office in Tulsa about April 1st.
Dr. J. H. Mixon, of Kansas City, Kansas, was in the city Thursday on professional business. Dr. Mixon has recently opened a private sanitarium in his home town.

The above named Tulsans were selected in the democratic primary Tuesday to contest honors with the G. O. P. ticket in the city election. April 2nd.
The vote in the primary was very light as a whole.
The tenth precinct which is considered "Colored" polled the heaviest vote in the entire city registering 225 for C. H. Hubbard for mayor. R. E. Curran, candidate for commissioner No. 1, received the next highest mark, 182, casting their votes for him. F. M. Bohn, for commissioner No. 3, was third in the race, receiving 162 votes. M. J. McNulty, who load his ticket two years ago, received 158 votes in the primary Tuesday, taking fourth place on the ticket. H. F. Newblock, the fifth man on the ticket received 133 votes.
A deal more enthusiasm was manifested in the tenth than in other precincts, but only about one-fourth of the voting strength was gotten out. This, evidently, is being reserved for the big battle two weeks hence, when the black phalanx will march to the polls in loving (?) memory of the segregation act, forced down their throats by the present administration.
HUBBARD MAKES OPEN STATEMENT
Emphatically States He Is Not in Favor of Open Town, Favors Plan to Quit Fooling People About Water and Construction of Adequate Police Force.
C. H. Hubbard, Democratic candidate for mayor, issued the following statement from his sick bed Wednesday, just before being taken to Kansas City for medical treatment:
"I wish to thank the people for the magnificent vote given me in Tuesday's election. I have been seriously handicapped by being confined to my bed during the campaign, but I expect to be out within a few days.
"I wish to say that I reiterate everything I said in my statement in Sunday's papers.
"I am emphatically not in favor of a nopen town. I am against bootlegging and gambling and all other forms of vice, and if elected mayor I small continuously and without reservation fight for their suppression. I have made no deals of any kind with anybody and I am free to work for what I believe to be the best interest of the city.
"I elected I expect to try to work out the city's problems in such a way that our most serious difficulties will be permanently solved.
"I do not believe in any patch work policy in regard to the water supply. If it is necessary for us to go to the Grand river or some other place for our water, I believe that we should recognize that fact now and adjust all future improvements to that end; but CONTINUED ON PAGE THREE

Warns People Not to Tell What Happened in Church Saturday Night Under Penalty of Death
Man With Black Past, Questionable Present and Doubtful Future, Under the Cloak of Church Reverts to Stunts of Dark Ages
The editor of the Tulsa Star was the suject of Evangelist Duffie's wild, incoherent and inconsequential discourse at the A. M. E. church last Saturday night and judging from the story told by more than a score of people who were there the affair was typical of stunts pulled off by the gods of "hoodooism" and "conjurism" in ages long ago.
The evangelist dwelled most of the evening on his bitter arraignment of the Tulsa Star and its editor, declaring among other things that he was a spiritualist, able to remove anything or anybody out of his way by the aid of the spirits.
With blazing eyes and dilating nostrils the inspired evangelist, is reported to have predicted the untimely death of the editor by Tuesday. Others say he said the spirits would visit the editor with some terrible calamity within three days, three weeks or three months. All because the Star denounced him as an impostor preying upon the ignorance and superstition of our people. That all of this is true was amply proved to the satisfaction of any sensible person Saturday night when he told the people before him that he could remove their enemies or troubles by a direct appeal to the Spirits and implored them to have faith in his ability to do the supernatural and have their enemies or troubles removed.
"Come and put your hands on my shoulders," he admonished them, "but don't look into my eyes and your enemies and your troubles will disappear." As strange as it may seem, many compiled placing their hands on the man's shoulders and body until he was almost completely covered. In the meantime he trembled like a leaf on a tree in the fall and groused and moaned like the devil incarnate that he is, till he was satisfied the spirits had heard his unholy guplication.
Those who refused to make fools of themselves in this manner, the great evangelist called hypocrites. Finally he warned those present that they must keep as a sacred secret everything that transpired there that night, saying anyone who dared to tell it would die in three days.
Sunday morning the great evangelist spent another considerable part of his time discussing and virtually "cussing" the Star and the editor, but, be it said to his credit, not once

did he deny a single statement published in this paper about him.
After some time spent in vilifying and cunning attempts to discredit the editor, the man made this startling remark:
"There are three things anybody must have to attract my attention. They are money and a plenty of it, education, and a plenty of it and religion, and a plenty of it." Note the position he gave religion, will you? Also the importance he places upon money—first in all the requisites of worthness—in his estimation the Star seems to have attracted his attention very much, although we are as shy on the money proposition as he is on real education, and we thank God that our religion is different from his.
And this is the style of man-devil that comes to Tulsa and steals away the reason of so many of our people. A notorious liar and the worst kind of hypocrite. If there is any hell it will be too full of this kind of cusses to allow any the rest of us room there.
He stated Sunday morning that he lived in Boston. This after he had read the telegram in the Star from Editor Fred R. Moore of the New York Age, saying he was not known there in New York, which city he claimed as his home. But in this he evidently lied as the following telegram from Monroe Trotter, editor and publisher of the Guardian will show:

Sells Tickets for Entrance to Church During Revival
That money and not souls of sinners was the chief aim of the evangelist, alias McDuffie in coming to Tulsa was proved Sunday night when many people were turned away from the church because they had not bought tickets and would not buy them to be admitted to the church to hear the word of God (?) preached by a man who the night before had usurped the pulpit as a seer or spiritualist and invoked the wrath of the spirits upon

WHAT SAYS THE SCRIPTURES
ABOUT HELL
The doctrine of eternal torment was introduced by Papacy to induce Pagans to join her system and support her priesthood. It flourished at the same time that "bull fights" and gladiatorial contest were the public amusements most enjoyed, when the crusaders were called holy wars, and when men and women were calderities and often saughtered for soaking, contrary to teachings of Papacy.
In the first place, bear in mind that the Old Testament Scripture were written in the Hebrew language and the New Testament in the Greek language. The word "hell" is an English word sometimes selected by the translators of the English Bible to express the sense of the Hebrew word SHEOL and the Greek words MADES, TARTAROO and GEMENIA. These same words are sometimes rendered "grave" and "pit". The word "hell" in old English usage before the Parad Theologians picked it up and gave it a new and special significance to suit their own purposes, simply meant to conceal, to cover. The word "hell" was therefore properly used synonymously with the words "grave" and "pit" to translate the words "SHEOL", and "HADES" as signifying the secret or hidden condition of death. The word hell occurs 11 times in the Old Testament, and in every instance it is SHEOL in the Hebrew. It does not mean a fake of fire and brimstones nor anything at all resembling that thought; instead of a place of blazing fire it is described in the context as a state of darkness (Job 10:21); instead of a place where shrieks and groans are heard, it is described in the context as a place of silence (Psa. 115:11); instead of representing in any sense pain and suffering or remorse, the context describes it as some of forgetfulness (Psa. 11, 12). There is no work, nor devices, nor knowledge, in the grave (SHEOL) whether then ghost. Excels 9:10. Hell in the New Testament from the Greek word HADES, (Matt. 11:27). And then Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shall be brought down to hell. I hope there is no one so sly as to think that Capernaum is down in hell roasting in agony.
In the New Testament one other word is rendered hell namely, GEHENNA, which we will now consider. GEHENNA occupies in all 12 times where it is rendered hell—Mart. 5:22, 29, 30; 19:28, 18:9; 22:5, 23, 24; Mark. 9:44-47; Luke 12:24. It is the Greek measure of spelling the Hebrew words which are translated "The Valley of Hammon." This valley lay just outside the City of Jerusalem, and served the purpose of sewer and garbage burner to that city. The offal, garbage, etc., were emptied there, and fire were kept continually burnt.

ing to consume utterly all things deposited therein, and brimstone being added to assist combustion and injure complete destruction. It was not lawful to put any living thing therein. When we consider and remember that the children of Isreal did all they did were types and illustrations of greater things to follow, we should expect that this Valley of Hinnon or Gehenna would also play its part in illustrating the future. We know that their chief city was a type of the New Jerusalem or government to be established during the Millennium (Rev. 21:10-27) The class not worthy of life, during that day, after having had full opportunity to gain life, is represented by the refuse and filth, lifeless carasses cast into Gehenna outside the city for utter destruction. Accordingly, we find it stated that those not found worthy of life are to be lost into the "Lake of Fire" (Rev. 20:15)—Fire here, as everywhere, being used as symbol of destruction, and the symbol, lake of fire, being drawn from this same Gehenna, or Valley of Hinnon. Therefore, while Gehenna served a useful purpose to the literal City of Jerusalem as a place for garbage burning, it, like the city itself, was typical, and illustrated the future dealings of God in refusing and committing to destruction all the impure elements, thus preventing them from defiling the Holy City, the New Jerusalem. Seeing then that Israel's polity, condition, etc., prefigure those of the world in the coming age, how appropriate that we should find the valley of abyss, Gehenna, a figure of the second death, the utter destruction in the coming age of all that is unworthy of preservation. The expression burning with brimstone adds force to the symbol "fire" to express the utter and irrevocable destructiveness of the second death; for the latest deductions of scientists are that burning brimstone is the most deadly agent known.
There is quite a number of ignorant or dishonest preachers who while not indorsing the literal lake of fire and brimstone, take the further unscriptural position that there is some kind of everlasting punishment for the wicked after death. To all such I wish to say that you take a position contrary to God's word. The everlasting punishment mentioned in the Bible means nothing more or less than a death from which there is no hope of a resurrection. (The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23; the soul that sinneth it shall die (Ezek. 18:4, 20). All the wicked will God destroy. (Psa. 145:20) The wicked shall perish. (Psa. 37:20.)
To you unfaithful preachers who know not the truth and who keep busy dopeing the poor sheep with fire and brimstone and concoctions of emotionalism, you had better be warned. Your days are numbered. God will not permit his sheep to

WIFE OF E. T. SMITH BURIED
SUNDAY
There were a host of friends assembled at the First Baptist church Sunday, March 8th, to view the remains of Sister Susie Hagen Smith. As the body was slowly ushered through the crowded aisles the soft strains of the beautiful funeral march played by Miss Mabel Cornelius Lewis pealed forth its melodies. She was born in Hunt county, Texas, and moved to Tulsa in 1908. She taught several years in Oklahoma. She was married to F. T. Smith in 1913. Two children were born to this family. She was a devout member of the First Baptist church. She spent some time in Colorado, trying to regain her health after which she returned to Tulsa, and later departed for Albuquerque, where she departed this life March 8, 1918. The following program was rendered:
THREE INJURED IN AN AUTO
SMASH-UP
L. D. Johnson, J. L. Grier and his wife were all painfully injured Monday night when a street car collided with an auto in which they were riding, owned and driven by Johnson on the corner of South Main and Fifth streets. The car was almost completely demolished and the occupants had a narrow escape from death.
All of them were hastened to the hospital where their injuries were treated. Johnson, it is said, was the most severely injured.

Many have severely criticised us for our attack on this postmaster, but the majority of the people, especially those who are intelligent enough to reason for themselves, have commended us.
The following letter from a prominent well-to-do citizen of Perry, Oklahoma, is typical of the expressions we are receiving daily from the better thinking people:
"Perry, Okla., March 18, 1918. Edito rof The Tulsa Star. Dear Sir. Continue for the right. While you may go down in Tulsa, the outer guards of the state and nation, sustained by truth and righteousness are with you in your stand.-C. T. Talliafero."

WOMAN KILLED BY AUTO TRUCK
Mrs. Josephine Fields, wife of Edgar Fields, $22 East Archer street was run down and almost instantly killed Wednesday afternoon by an auto truck belonging to the Genet Furniture Company.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Detroit avenue and Archer street. The driver of the truck was arrested by Patrolman Barney Cleaver and taken to jail, where he was held on investigation. According to eye witnesses, the truck was ioing at a rapid clip when it struck the woman passing over her body badly crushing her about the shoulders, breaking her neck and fracturing her skull. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist church today.
PROMINENT RACE WOMAN OF
COWTEA DEAD
Mrs. Z. F. Johnston, formerly Miss Z. F. Perry, of Coweta, Oklahoma, died on March 16, 1918, at her home, after a brief illness. She was born thirty-two years ago in Columbia, Tennessee, and was married to that celebrated physician, Dr. L. H. Johnston. Two children were born of this marriage, a girl and a boy, both of whom survive her. Her's was a life of service and good will. The clouds could not shine in human life while she was near. To know her was but to love her, and the loss is not alone that of her husband and blessed little ones but that of the entire community in which she lived. She made the problems of the people her problems and their sorrows her burdens. Her place in the community life is made vacant by death but the fruit of her good deeds will be plucked by loving hands. The funeral was held at Coweta under the auspices of the local S. M. T. Lodge of which she was a member and interment was in the cemetery at Columbia, Tennessee, where for her life first began. The bereaved family carry with it the sympathy of a fond public and return their thanks to all those friends who felt for them in their hour of sorrow.

HUBBARD STATEMENT
the principal thing to do is to quit trying to fool the people about the water supply; find out what is necessary to do and get ready to do it right.
"I believe we should immediately extend the water service and sewerage to all the out-lying districts.
"The time has come to build up a police department which shall be adequate to the needs of the city, and I propose if possible to see that the entire city receives adequate police protection.
"I believe also that work on the solution of the street car and gas problems should be carried on all year and not merely worked on at top speed for a few weeks when the service completely breaks down.
"I realize that this is not a one man job, but that I will be dependent upon the commissioners who are elected with me and upon the civic organizations of the city. Unless we have this harmonious teamwork we will not be able to accomplish the big things which are necessary for the growth and welfare of the city.
"I do not believe that personal questions should be injected into the campaign, as a campaign of that sort which ever side is successful, leaves sore spots which are not to the best interest of the city.
"I believe in setting out the ideas for which I would work if elected mayor, and ask the support of those citizens who are in sympathy with these ideas. If there are not enough citizens in sympathy with these ideas to elect me mayor, I shall have no complaint to make. I believe, however, that the vote of Tuesday shows that the majority of the people is in favor of these ideas and that the Democratic ticket will be elected by a safe majority.
"I trust that I may be able to be out within a very few days and begin personal campaign."
