ERE is the story of a Negro who lived a life so exciting and full of wonderful adventure that it stirs the blood like a tale of one of the brave knights of old. Yet it is true in every detail.
Alexander the Greatest is what they called him!
England's great hero is still Richard of the Lion Heart who fought the Turks in Palestine for the tomb of Christ. Yet this Negro equals the great Richard in every way. Like him, too, he was a giant in size and strength. And the bravest of the brave.
Coming into the world at one of the most exciting periods of its history this Negro played a man's part. Entering the army he rose from the rank of sergeant-major to that of general in command of a great army in less than two years.
To learn who he was and what he did let us dip into history. Not so deeply, either, for it happened less than one hundred and fifty years ago, while his fellow Negroes were still slaves in America.
One day one of the great nobles at the court of Louis XV, getting tired of the gay life, made up his mind to get as far away from it as possible. Selecting the island of San Domingo in the West Indies he decided to make that his home

Arriving there, he was warmly welcomed by the rich planters who were eager to have so great a personage in their midst. But the Marquis de la Pailleterie, as the nobleman was called, had meant just what he said. He was tired of society, and wanted to live a simple life. So shunning them, he went to live among the Negroes.
But in doing that the marquis little guessed that he was to add a thousand greater glories to his name; that in quitting Europe with all his wealth, he was to return some day with far greater treasure.
All of which sounds like a fairy-tale, doesn't it? But you'll soon see it isn't.
THE MAROUIS MARRIES
But the marquis was thorough if anything. Deciding to bury his past still deeper, he took another step. Among his neighbors was one whose bright flashing eyes, supple figure and laughing ways had captivated him. She was Marie Dumas. Proposing marriage, he was accepted, and the humble Marie became the Marquise de la Pailleterie.
A year later a son, Alexander, was born; in color, dark, very dark. For eleven years the couple lived happily, and then the marquise died. Her husband, grief-stricken, remained in the West Indies eight years longer, then he returned to

France.
With him was his son, the Count de la Pailleterie. And what a son was that colored lad! Three years later he had become the talk of Paris. Six feet six in his stocking feet and endowed with strength to match he could do feats that none could equal.
And he possessed a nimbleness and activity of brain to match. As a swordsman he eclipsed all in France but one, and that one was another Negro, the Chevalier de St. Georges.
Lifting his right foot the young count would have two men stand on his calf, and then hop off with them on it. He would place four fingers of his right hand in the muzzles of as many muskets and lift them all with arm extended. Once, while on horseback, he saw a soldier misbehaving himself, and swooping down on him he caught him by the back of his coat and holding him at arm's length as he would a dirty package, rode with him all the way to the guard house. Later he was to become a warrior so formidable and spectacular that had he lived in an earlier age he would without great difficulty be accepted as a real personage.
Generous and kind-hearted but hot-headed and quick to resent insult, the young count got into many qurarrels. At twenty-two he fought a duel in

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE:
WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE:
Big Otto, gang leader and crook, has brought about the arrest of David Conway, a country town youth, for a crime of which Ott himself is guilty. Zola, a beautiful and mysterious cabaret dancer, knows the facts and seeks to save David. Ott has her kidnapped by an Aviator, the Chocolate Kid. She is taken to The Nest, a cabin in the forest owned by Anson Biedsoe, hypocritical fellow townman of David and that youth's enemy. Zola escapes and is aided by Barry Dwane, a young weakling under the domination of Big Ott, and by The Chocolate Kid, at whose apartment in a super-respectable neighborhood, she is left in hiding with the admonition that she must not attempt to help David, but is otherwise free. She sips away from the Kid's apartment and goes to the small suburban village of Etingford, David's home. She plans to have his mother help her in saving David. The mother tells her that Davio's father, who has driven him from home for association with a cabaret dancer, will forbid it. Zola is hiding in his home, the father comes to the door and is about to open it, then—
CHAPTER VII
Slowly—slowly—the knob turned. The two women, standing in tense silence, watched breathlessly. It stopped abruptly, checked by the limitations of the completion of its arc. They heard the breathing of the man outside, their own breath all but choked within them. Then—

Jason turned abruptly and went away. They heard the steady plick-plock of his footsteps as they faded away down the short passage and the stairway beyond. When a faint, steady thumping told them that the man had reached the bottom of the steps they looked at each other. Both drew long breaths of relief. Nancy Conway was the first to speak. "He never comes here, I wonder why he came today?" There was a musing note in the anxiety of her voice. "Perhaps—but no, he could have had no word of the things you have told me and, Jason does not forgive easily. Maybe—well, anyway—" she turned to Zola, her face clear with determination, "you must stay within and do not open the door under any pretext until I return. I shall get ready for my trip to town tomorrow." With this final word Nancy Conway went out and closed the door softly behind her. Immediately Zola shot the bolt and turning walked over to the small desk by the window where she sat down and arranged the writing utensils thereon, for use.
PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES Zola did not know how long she had been sitting at the desk but she had covered sheet after sheet of the white paper there with her fine, spidery writing when the failing light caused her to stop. Gathering the great sheaf of papers in her hands she began to adjust them. It was the only wise thing to do she felt, thus to set down and leave, here in the safe precinct of this room, the facts of her own knowledge and the means by which she had attained it. With Dtt, and now the Chocolate Kid, seeking to keep her from making the facts concerning David known, she might be placed where her knowledge could do him no good until after the trial. She must prepare to outwit them. These papers would do if she herself could not reach the proper

authorities in time. David's mother might succeed in impressing the prosecuting attorney and again she might not. Daniel Carroll was a just man, she knew. But the office he held as prosecutor was subject to the political ring that protected Big Ott's nefarious gang. And David was an obscure person whose good or ill-fortune would mean little to the power of the party. But—if documentary evidence of the things she knew could be presented—then even the politicians might be forced to stay their hands in some measure. But—she narrowed her eyes knowingly as she separated the carbon copies of the papers in her hand from the originals—it was easy to destroy documentary evidence once it was in hand. They must understand that a copy of the things that Nancy Conway would place in the prosecutor's hand was hidden safely away and might be produced in case——. Carefully she tucked the carbon copy away in the

deep drawer of David's old boyhood desk as she rose and stretched her beautiful arms above her golden head. Her red lips opened in a tired yawn that checked itself suddenly and became a small red "O" of astonishment as Zola looked out through the veil of green leaves to the street beyond.
DEVILS CONSPIRE
With heads close together and lips moving in furtive conversation she saw Big Ott and Anson Bledsoe. Just beyond the white gate that led into the yard of the house where she stood watching them, they paused. Big Ott seemed to be urging the sleek haired shrinking dandy to something from his gesticulations. Anson, on the other hand, seemed to hesitate, to be temporizing. Then the big black man's gestures took on a threatening appearance. Anson seemed to cringe and wither before it. With futile movements and sagging shoulders he at length seemed to acquiesce in whatever evil plan the unscrupulous gangster was laying before him. The watching woman's face paled. Her lips tightened and her shoulders straightened and tensed themselves as do the shoulders of one about to fight.
What had brought Big Ott to Etingford? What could he have in common with the dirty little hypocrite of this small town who was such a bitter enemy of the youth whom she was trying to save from his evil machinations? She must know these things and must find a way to prevent their success.
STALKING THE HUNTERS
Dusk had fallen. Still the two men stood in the deep shadow of the arching trees that lined the street on either side. It was a very quiet street. There were few passers-by. Only by the feeble reflections of the lighted windows of the house below could Zola make sure that they still

stood talking and, she knew, planning. Outside of the window where she stood watching them the branches of the big elm tapped suggestively on the open window frame. Reaching behind her with one hand and keeping her eyes fixed on the dim outlines of the two men Zola grasped the dark cloak she had worn that morning when she left The Chocolate Kid's apartment. Wrapping it about her she stood for a moment listening intently. All was still below stairs save for a far murmur as of voices in droning conversation. With agility born of her profession and trained to the nth degree by constant practice the dancer stepped lightly across the window sill as she grasped the nearest of the tough-fibered, swaying branches firmly in her slender hands. With unerring and perfectly timed impetus she swung herself lightly forward into space. With what seemed almost uncanny precision she reached out and gripped a second and stronger branch as she let go of the higher and more fragile one. Thus swinging and springing with the grace and lightness of a bird the lithe dancer descended the great tree and at length dropped from a low drooping branch lightly and almost soundlessly onto the soft greensward below. As her small feet struck with a soft thud the two men turned and proceeded in opposite directions. Zola caught her breath quickly. Almost she wondered if they had seen her descend. Then as she saw the broad back of Big Ott about to disappear in the direction from which she had come to this house that morning she decided upon her course of action. Clasping her dark cloak closely about her and sending a last cautious glance toward the dimly lighted windows of the kitchen of the big house Zola stole softly across the springy carpet of the green lawn and opening the gate stepped out onto the walk. Big Ott's bulking shadow was plainly perceptible as he moved leisurely along among the stationary shadows of the trees beyond. Stealthily Zola stalked him. In Etingford the first deepening of night found most of the early rising inhabitants indoors at supper tasks or out in the barns and barn-lots at outside chores. The streets were almost deserted as Zola stole along at a safe distance behind the big crook. Ott was so absorbed in his own wicked thoughts that he never turned but plowed on his sinister way all unconscious that behind him flitting from shadow to shadow was the very person he would have given much of his illy-gotten money to find.
Where the tracks crossed the town and divided social life as well as the topeography Big Ott turned into a tall house at the end of a row of small dilapidated shacks. The same house that David had watched Anson Bledsoe enter in the wake of the pretty girl in a vivid red dress on the day that he had left Etingford, a bitter, cynical outcast because of that same Anson Bledsoe's hypocritical

and vindicative lies. Above the transom of the door that closed behind him the light inside glowed vividly red.
Zola slipped across the street and paused in the sinister shadow of the shack nearest the tall building. There she stood, irresolute. What should be her next move? She must think of some way of entering that house. She must, at all costs, find out Big Ott's purpose in visiting Etingford, must know what diabolical plans he was hatching out with the assistance of that slimy creature, Anson Bledsoe.
INTO ITS MAZES
As she stood irresolutely the door of the hovel whose shadows had sheltered her was opened. A wide band of light fell across her from within. A girl in a vivid red dress stood contemplating her on the threshold. There was no surprise in her eyes at first. She was used to seeing women lurking in the shadows thereabouts. But as the dancer turned her beautiful profile toward her the girl stepped forward with a little exclamation. Zola turned and faced her, smiling diplomatically as she did so. She might need this girl's friendship. "Who is it, Angie?" The voice was unmistakably the querulous voice of an invalid.
"I donno, Maw, a woman." Angie smiled back at Zola invitingly, "You mus' be a stranger around here, ain'tchu?" There was a friendly implication in the red-gowned girl's question.
"Yes, I am, I was just—just looking for a place to stop—I haven't got much money and I—I," Zola looked at Angie knowingly, suggestively.
Angie jerked her head toward the lighted room behind her and slowly, deliberately dropped her right eye in a wink that indicated the need of certain discretions. "You can come in here and wait with Maw till I go over here to Miz Stonyman's an" see if you can stay the night, she often takes people—especially women, in for a few days till they can get on their feet—Maw here don't like her but she's a pretty nice woman is Miss Stonyman." Zola understood the condition of affairs here, thoroughly. Angie's mother, a helpless invalid from privation and overwork, under happier circumstances would have been one of the church-going, respectable middle-class mothers, whose daughter would have received the best education and respectable surroundings at the greatest of sacrifices. But as it was, the mother, helpless, the hapless daughter was forced to strange ways of earning a livelihood for them both and yet with a pathetic yearning for the respectability so tragically denied them the two kept pretense of belief in it by a deceit of ways and purposes that was their one pitiful outpost of decency, so desired and so horribly denied. Zola, understanding, compassionately helped to car-

Please inform me as to the meaning of the following dreams which remain vividly in my mind and, hence, somewhat distress me.
One night I dreamed a fair-haired girl, being near me, said her head itched and asked me to look and see what the matter was. I placed my hand on her head and told her nothing was wrong so to forget it. But a few moments later she asked me again to examine her head and she seemed to be distressed in her discomfort so I parted a bit of her hair and saw hovering close together two head lice which I killed.
Two nights later I dreamed that one of my front teeth was hanging low and peg-like, having slipped from its groove in the gum. The tooth
A YOUNG HUSBAND asks our advice this week.
My dear Mrs. Jerome:
I have just been married a month. I am thirty and my wife is seventeen. Moreover, she was raised in a convent and so combined with her youth is also a very limited knowledge of the world.
Now, what I am up against is this. Shall I enlighten my wife about human nature and perhaps disillusion her about myself and life; or shall I let her blunder along in her own charmingly foolish and innocent manner? She amuses me this way, but I know it is dangerus to us both for as you have said in your column, experience is safer than inexperience in marital affairs.—Young Husband.
ANSWER
You are on the right track, Y. H. Even second, hand experience is better than none at all. For lack of experience is what makes things appear so shocking to us. It is not the thing itself so much

C-2223 is the original prescription of a reputable physician who used it in the treatment+ of sub-acute and chronic rheumatic aches and pains of the joints and muscles, gout and neuralgia.
It is pleasant to take, effective and safe. Your druggist sells the regular $1.00 size and the 60c trial size on a moneyback guarantee. Ask for it by its original number:
St. Joseph's Prescription G2223 FOR RHEUMATIC ACHES AND PAINS
Enlisting in the army, the dashing Dumas at once began to distinguish himself. His first exploit was to capture thirteen of the enemy single-handed and tying them all on a single string, led them back to camp. For this he was at once promoted sergeant-major and invited to dinner by his commander-in-chief.
This was the period of the great French Revolution. A number of free Negroes had come from the West Indies to offer their services to the people against the aristocrats. At their head was the noted swordsman, St. Georges.
Hearing of the exploits of Dumas; St. Georges sent for him and offered him a second lieutenancy. But the colonel of a white regiment named Boyer also had his eyes on Dumas and offered to make him lieutenant. St. Georges responded by offering a captaincy; Boyer then offered to make him major; and so the bidding went on until he ended by being a lieutenant-colonel under St. Georges.
Only twenty-two months, and he had reached a position where only two men were above him! All on the strength of merit, for an attempt had been made to bar him from the army because of his title. Surely no list of military geniuses would be complete without mention of General Dumas.
It would be impossible to treat of the life of this adventurous giant in less than a book, and so a few bare details must suffice here.
FOOLING THE AUSTRIANS
Here is a story as told by D'Hautrive, his biographer: One day, while in the Alps with only fourteen men, news came that two squadrons of Austrian cavalry were approaching. Instead of sharing the alarm of his men, Dumas bade them hide behind a hedge. "You'll laugh," he said. "It is up to you to amuse the Austrians. Hide! I am going to look for them. When I return let me pass, and then shoot all who follow me!" Then this is what happened in the words of D'Hautrive:
"Taking his sword in hand he spurred his horse to a gallop and

Dumas' greatest exploit was the holding of the bridge at Brixen, single-handed, against a troop of Austrian cavalry. Dermancourt, later a general, and an eyewitness, says:
"Gen. Dumas had stopped at the bridge and was holding it alone against the whole squadron. Because of the narrowness of the bridge the men could come upon him only by two and threes, and these he cut down as they came up."

(Continued from page 2) her with the remark that she would be back in a minute. It was several minutes before Angie returned, when she did a large salow-faced, hard eyed woman accompanied her. "This is her, Miz Stonyman," with a perfectly naive disregard of the usual courtesies, the girl waved a hand toward Zola, who had risen as they entered. Yet her smile as she looked at the beautiful dancer was entirely devoid of any intention to be rude.
The big yellow woman surveyed the other with a keenly appraising look before she spoke. "Where you from?" she said at length, her voice was heavy but she strove to soften it with a diplomatic placative friendliness that yet was not too personal. "From X—" Zola named a city half way across the continent. "I want some sort of—work." She stressed the last word in such a way that it gave it some different meaning to the big woman than the one she had apparently expected. She looked at the dancer again, this time with a cunning back of the expression in her prominent dark eyes.
"I dunno of any kinda work just now," she said, and paused as though to weigh her next remark. Her eyes were furtive as she looked at Zola and then away, "But, Angie here says you ain't got no place to stay an' no money, so you kin come over to my place an' stay for the night. I'll see what I kin do for you in the mornin'." It was Zola's turn to eye the big yellow woman keenly now.
"Thank you," she answered, and her voice was calm and soft, "but I have enough with me to pay for one night's lodging if you will accept this ring as surety." She held her hand up to the light to show a ring with a small first water stone setting.
The woman eyed the stone greedily. "Yes," she said, "that will be all right."
"But I wish privacy for tonight. I need rest and I do not wish to meet anyone." There was a significant finality in Zola's tone. The woman caught the significance. She understood fully that for the ring Zola was purchasing immunity from the sinister employment that she wished to force upon her. She smiled inwardly for she thought, "When the ring is mine you have nothing else and you must meet my terms after tomorrow." She looked with avid eyes of appraisal at the beauty of the woman: "That's all right," the yellow woman reiterated, "I'll just take you in the back way an' you won't have to see none of the—company if you don' want to." She tried to smile ingratiatingly.
WATCHING THE PLOTTERS
Inside of an over-furnished, yet somehow sordid room with its dirty red draperies of sleazy silk closely drawn Zola looked about her carefully. Two doors opened from it, one toward the front part of the house, the other toward the rear. She examined them for locks. Both were in good working condition. As she softly turned the knob on the one that opened into the front her heart gave a great leap and then almost stopped. A voice from beyond the door spoke, harshly.

HOW TO KEEP WELL
There are two processes continually taking place in your body. One is the building up of your BONE, BLOOD, NERVE and TISSUE, the other is the carrying off of the waste matter and impurities. For every ounce of food you eat or liquid you drink, there is almost an ounce of waste matter that should be eliminated by the way of your KIDNEYS and BOWELS.
If your LIVER and KIDNEYS fail to do their duty, portions of this waste matter remain in your stomach and intestines where they ferment, sour and decay, causing INDIGESTION, SOUR STOMACH, KIDNEY TROUBLE, etc. These impurities are also taken up by your blood and carried to all parts of your system, causing a general run-down condition and IMPURE BLOOD.
The surest way to keep well is to keep your liver and kidneys active, your bowels regular, your blood pure and your system clean. There is no better medicine for this purpose than Spicer's Nux-Herbs and Iron. It is a laxative-diuretic and tonic of proven merit, a medicine that acts directly on your liver, kidneys, bowels and blood.
It starts to work from the very first dose, does the work surely safely and quickly Works the cold, bile, filth, malaria and impurities from your system in a surprising manner, without gripe or pain, purifies your blood, clears your complexion and builds you up all over. Makes you eat better, sleep better, work better, look better and feel better.
If you are weak, nervous and run-down, have that tired, worn out feeling and subject to sick spells you should start taking Nux-Herbs and Iron today. The very first few doses will give you a vim, vigor and vitality such as you have not known in years. It is not a temporary stimulant but is a lasting tonic and system builder.
You may eat or drink anything you wish while taking Nux-Herbs and Iron. It is good for both men and women. If you are tired taking medicines and paying doctor bills, get a bottle today, if it doesn't prove to be worth ten times the price you paid for it, return the empty bottle and your money will be refunded at once, without a question. What more could we offer?
WARNING—Owing to the remarkable popularity and great demand for Nux-Herbs and Iron, there are naturally many imitations on the market today, so when buying always ask for SPICER'S Nux-Herbs and Iron, and look for the name Spicer's on the label, just as you see it written below.

ONE of the most interesting departures ever noted in Negro business is the new enterprise inaugurated by the Underwriters Mutual Life Insurance Company of Chicago, said to be one of the strongest businesses of its kind owned and controlled by colored people. It is well known that in the realm of Negro business, Life Insurance Companies have made the greatest advancement. They have rendered valuable service in providing hundreds of thousands of Negroes with protection. This unquestionably constitutes one of the most remarkable epochs in the annals of Negro progress. Unfortunately, however, the Insurance Companies of our group heretofore have centered their attention on the large cities, with the result that those living in the small towns, villages and farms have often been deprived of this very essential service.
Now, the Underwriters Mutual Life Insurance Company has perfected a plan whereby any person living

Zola almost held her breath till he was through. So Big Ott was planning more deviltry as she supposed. She bent forward to listen more carefully.
"But the marshal lives right back of the bank, Ott, an' Barry don't know this town. You remember he made a fizzle once before as lookout, suppose—suppose he falls again—my God, Ott, whyn't you choose some of your regulars. I'll meet you there and as soon as we get Barry all set we'll do the inside work and I'll get out. I want to get back to town before daylight tomorrow!"
The speaker paused. Zola listened intently but the closing of a door coming faintly to her ears told her that the men had left the adjoining room. She stood for a moment in deep thought then—suddenly came to some conclusion. Picking up the alarm clock on the littered dresser she wound it and verifying the time by her small wrist watch, set it for eleven o'clock. This done, she deliberately removed her outer garments and lay down to sleep.
"Ting-a-ll-n-n-g-g-g-!" The sharp whirr of the alarm brought the sleeping dancer sharply back to consciousness. She got up and with unhurried but singularly rapid movements donned her clothes. Downstairs the strains of the electric piano came to (Continued on Page 7)

She felt easier and surer of the success of her plan when she heard the wild bilarity of the mob downstairs. It meant that there would be fewer obstacles to her plan. It would be easier to slip out of the place under such cover. It might also mean a chance to use the telephone she had seen at the bottom of the back stairs, in the butler's kitchen, as she came up.
Again wrapping herself in the dark coat she had worn that evening Zola cautiously opened the rear door of her room and peered out. A dim light burned in the short corridor. It was empty. She stepped out cautiously and stood still for a moment watching and listening. There was no movement nor sound other than the distant music and cries of the merry-makers in the front of the house. Zola sped down the back stairs.
The butler's pantry was closed. She tried the door. It opened easily and she slipped within and closed it behind her. It was black dark within. Groping blindly she found the high wall telephone. Placing the receiver to her ear she listened carefully. There was no sound. Suddenly she sensed that in so small a place as Etingford the telephones must be rung by the user. She hesitated. Suppose someone should hear the tinkle of the bell and investigate? But she must take the chance. Gingerly she turned the small handle that her exploring fingers found. The bell tinkled. Her breath almost stopped. In the closed pantry the sound seemed loud enough to waken the dead. But the noise from the front came back to her deadened but unabated. She gained more confi-

dence. "Number, please," the voice over the wire brought her back to the present. "Information?" She whispered the word.
The marshal of Etingford was sleeping when the telephone awoke him. A strange voice came to him over the wire. A woman's voice. "The bank of Etingford is to be robbed at one-five o'clock tonight. The men will be inside and they are desperate and armed. Take help with you and keep the knowledge secret until you get there." The marshal was bewildered. "Hello — Hello." Frantically he kept repeating the words till the operator told him for the second time that the party at the other end had already hung up.
What could it mean? A hoax, perhaps. But folks in Etingford did not play jokes like that. Besides there had been strange men around town today. Suspicious characters, and a strange woman had been enquiring the way to the Conway home. Maybe there was something to it. He would take some of the boys and—maybe—well—the marshal of Etingford was no coward.
Dropping the receiver Zola turned and stole cautiously out of the small cubicle. Now—to save Barry. It would be dangerous but she must do it. Barry must not be caught with Big Ott and Anson. He was to be left as lookout across from the marshal's house. She had passed the bank on her way from the station. Thank God she knew where the place was. The trees along the way were dense. Thank God for their shadows.
The big clock on the court house chimed the quarter hour as Zola slid stealthily along in the shelter of the dark shadows cast by a giant elm just beyond the corner where Barry Dwane skulked in frightened obedience to Big Ott's orders to watch for any possible interference with his plans. Barry was thoroughly frightened. He was watching more fearfully for possible captors of himself than for interferers with Big Ott.
Out of the shadowy gateway behind him he felt rather than heard some one approaching. He threw himself down among the shrubs that grew along the fence just as Zola stepped out into the roadway beyond.
(Will the bank robbery be frustrated? Will Barry be saved? Will Zola be caught? Be sure to read the eighth chapter next week.)

But for this he might have been made a king, as some of the less competent generals of Napoleon were. But a republican at heart, he opposed Napoleon's ambition to mount the throne. While in Egypt the two quarried bitterly after the victory of the Battle of the Pyramids, and Dumas decided to return to France.
Before leaving, however, he succeeded in putting down an insurrection among the natives, winning Napoleon's praise. But he had made up his mind to return and did.
He and Napoleon had been firm friends, and Napoleon never forgave him. In the earlier days each had made a pledge that the other was to act as godfather of the first son the other had. On the way back Dumas was captured at Naples and held a prisoner for two years, where attempts were made to poison him.
Four years later, still very young, he died a heart-broken man, seeing some that had fought under him being made kings and princes by Napoleon. But he was to get his revenge. He left a son, the great novelist, whose fame was destined for a time to eclipse even that of the great conqueror.
France has raised a monument to him, which stands in the fashionable Place Malsherves, Paris.
