Blanch Thornson. Has she "it"? And how! Are Racial Differences Disappearing? Interesting Entertaining and Instructive This is Mrs. Thelma Meeres. Can't Mr. Meeres pick 'em? ATING from the first discovery of differences in race, the question of racial distinction has been bandied about with considerable gusto and blinding confusion. It has been ATING from the first discovery of differences in race, the question of racial distinction has been bandied about with considerable gusto and blinding confusion. It has been discussed intelligently, passionately, prejudicially—in fact, every way except rationally. However, science has recently besieged the question with its characteristic fervor and zeal for the truth. Some of the greatest scientists of this and other countries have taken views diametrically opposed to each other, even though they have sought impersonally and painstakingly for the correct solution of this momentous problem. This alone shows the Prominent Scientist Makes Daring Statement! delicate intricacies of the questions involved; besides, it demonstrates that the question is still a mooted and an unsettled one in scientific circles. Recently Dr. Paul H. Saleste, a brilliant young assistant professor of psychology at Drake University, asserted that "The greater number of differences, contrary to the accepted notion, appear between individuals rather than races." This statement has startled some of the older and more conservative scientific authorities. It is to be noted that this assertion goes, much further than any of the previous authorities on the American problem have gone. The statement of Dr. Saleste proposes that Japanese Chinese Koreans Ma- lays, Caucasians, Negroes and all the other so-called races have absolutely no racial identity except the obvious physical ones. Dr. Saleste says further: "Science has proven that there is only one race and that man, the structural system of all men, differs little, and in the instances where it does differ it may be due to environment rather than racial characteristics. Popular notions held many theories about racial differences, but these are racial caricatures, not racial characteristics." This means that the variety of color pigments that characterize the races of the earth are not to be taken seriously. This environment alone of each race has produced these varying shades of color, according to Dr. Saleste. The difficulties of scientific experimentation along this line have made absolute scientific certainty impossible. But with manifold instruments and technical apparatus of all descriptions, it is expected that science will set the universe at ease on this buffling problem. Just what the ultimate outcome of this terrific controversy will be, remains to be seen. The authorities are still at war. The far-reaching consequences of the ultimate solution are dreaded by some and welcomed by others. The answer to this question has split scientific thought into as many channels as there are races. It is rumored that such eminent Negro Clean, Wholesome and Refreshing ell, another Irvin Miller personality queen unch Thomson. Has she "it"? And how! pearing? scientists as Dr. Just of Howard University and Professor Carver of Tuskegee Institute are being invited to aid in the solution of this scientific problem. It will be interesting to await the results of their research. Prominent ethnologists in America have recently stated that the Negro race in America is disappearing. The assertion of Dr. Saleste would seem to lend color to this idea. It is by no means an overnight phenomenon for a race of 15,000,000 to disappear. However, it is quite possible that dominant tendencies in the American civilization will inevitably lead to the obliteration of all racial differences and distinctions in this country. What will be the final verdict of science? The fear had en- tirely faded from her eyes. The Chocolate Kid continued to look at her for a long minute be- fore he spoke. Then he laughed, shortly and a bit self consciously. _“Maybe—!" he said, and paused disereetly. The Chocolate Kid had dealth with crooks and knew that first impressions should always wait upon secondary indications. He watched the expression on Zola’s face and looked deeply into her eyes. AWAKENING SYMPATHY ‘There was an odd look of concen- tration in the Chocolate Kid's little eyes, It gave his face a softer, gen- tler expression, He reached out and patted Zola’s shoulder sympathetical- ly. Something of the good that lies buried deep down in every human heart seemed to be fioating to the surface of this man’s motives. “Just what happened in Etingford the night of that attempted bank rob- bery, Zola, do you know?” The ques- tion, was put very deliberately. Ott and Bledsoe ‘had parted, but I knew them. So I followed Ott. Wherever Ott was I ‘mew {t would only be a matter of time before Bledsoe would be with him. As luck would have it I was right. I heard the plot and the details of it in the next room of the disreputable resort where they met. I telephoned the marshall without being discov- ered, But I wanted to get Barry out of it so I tried to get him before the marshall laid Lis trap. I half way succeeded, although I got myself in a jam doing it, As luck, that seemed to be following me that night, had it, Barry ducked out just in time and near enough to hear the conver- sation between tho sheriff and his men and me. He followed me and helped me out of that flimsy little calaboose by trapping the fellow that locked me in and trussing him up while he lifted his keys, Barry and I made our get-away in Ott’s car. We were lucky there, too for Ott was arrested and doesn’t know till yet that Barry and I used his car for our escape and that even if he had gotten away with the loot the car would have failed to meet him and he would have been caught anyway. The only thing that I have wondered and worried about is what became of Bledsoe,” Zola’s voice ended on a note of puzzled questioning. EXPLANATIONS “Bledsoe was shot in the shoulder as he tried to get away. He is hid- ing at The Nest till it gets well. Meanwhile the Sunday school and church have taken up two collections to assist Brother Bledsoe in carry- ing out some mythical charitable Plans that look to the evangelization of certain sections of the big city where he is now supposed to be risk- ing his life to bring the desperate sinful denizens to the good and right- eous path.” ‘With ironical directness the Choco- late Kid explained and answered her question. “And—” He looked at her and there was no question of his sincerity now, nor of his belief in her own. “Only the fact that you got wind of the plans that Ott and Bledsoe were making, saved Barry from being left to hold the bag. Ott never in- tended to use that car. He meant to have Bledsoe plant just enough evidence in the tonneau to cause the whole thing to be put on Barry when the marshall, whom Bledsoe intend- ed to lead to the discovery, found him, after the estimable Anson had incriminated himself by helping in the actual robbery. I WAS WAIT- ING TO TAKE OTT AND THE LOOT TO SAFETY IN MY AIR- PLANE.” At the look of shocked amazement on the face of the woman to whom he spoke and the sharp gasp of excited dismay, the quiet eyed man paused a moment. Then he went on— i Che wha Sk eee enn. ee Shee Neen of the girl Angie who had helped him to make the trip and was easily kept mum, first because she's in. love with the skunk and second because he's been fooling her and she thinks he is going to marry her, “You know, of course, that they had gotten away with the swag from the smaller vault before the time set for the second haul. The one you heard them plotting. Bledsoe had the combination of the small vault. That was cleaned out earlfer, Ott had to wait to do the second till Barry got back with the soup and tools. It was trying to hog it that got them caught. Well, I was ts share in that loot and—it’s vanished m thin air—unless Bledsoe has it -and—he’s such a fox. that I can’t guess the thing out. But—anyhow you're in the clear, Zola, You're 0, -K. with me from new on, kiddo.” Wide eyed and silent the beautiful dancer had lstened to the unfolding’ of the stery that told her of the un- thinkable depths of deceit and treach- ery from which she had escaped, as it were by a hair. Not until the words had dropped like “plummets to the bottom of her consciousness did ‘she move or speak, Then—“The dirty skunk!” The words were the apogee of contempt and hate. , QUESTIONS . “Worse than that, Zola,” the Kid's voice brol-e in on her thoughts, “but don't forget that he's got his gang behind him. And the gang is pretty well tied up with politics around here. I don’t know yet just what his game is, That's why I've been layin’ low and keepin’ out o’ sight pretty gen- erally. Of course, these people out here don’t know anything about that side of my life. That's why I'm safe around here. But I've hadda keep away from the old haunts down in Ott’s district. I never have let those birds know just where I perched ex- cept Barry and I only let him know when I seen the kid was so nutty about gettin’ you outa Ott’s clutches. Say Zola, what is the connection be- tween you an’ Barry, anyway. You're the one good spot in that kid’s out- look. I can't dope you two out and I ain't by myself. Where does he come in with you? ARG s Ny CREF Ena The Truth About Snakes THE TRUTH ABOUT SNAKE STORIES, by Karl P. Schmidt, assistant curator of reptiles and amphibians, Published by Field Museum of Natural History, Chi- cago, Til. HE real truth about snakes is Tt vastly different from the pop- ular belefs held by the ma- jority of people. Superstitious no- tions, such as the ability of “joint” snakes to reassemble themselves when divided into separate parts, and the common fancy that the “hoop” snake inserts the end of its tail in its mouth and rolls like a hoop, are all shown to be untrue in this interesting booklet. As a dependable source of helpful information, this publicetion is ex- ceedingly authoritative. Thorough- March 16, 1929, going experiments of the most dan- gerous sort were eonducted in order that these popular theories and myths about snakes might be given a rigid test. For instance, it is fre- quently thought that after a poi- sonous snake bite the vietim should imbibe as much of old John Barley- corn as possible as an antidote. Ac- cording to this informative little booklet, nothing could be farther from the truth. For, on the contrary, al- cohol hastens the spread of snake venom throughout the body. It will dispel the superstitions and fears of those who have a horror of reptiles in general. HOW TO KEEP WELL There are two processes contin- ually taking place in your body. If you wish a personal reply, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to this newspaper. DEAR sir: I would like to have you interpret a dream I had one morning. My dream is as follows: I was standing in front of my mother's home. I heard a noise in the air and looking up I saw something similar to a zeppelin and exactly behind it was a large bird similar to a dragon, and hitched to this was a charlot. Behind the chariot was an angel with the reigns to the charlot in her hands and just as they were directly over my head the angel's body lighted up and the figures 1928 were seen on her breast. I cried NE example of what industriousness, thrift and conservative living will net one, is the career of Mr. John Harris, of Norfolk, Va. NE example of what industriousness, thrift and conservative living will net one, is the career of Mr. John Harris, of Norfolk, Va. Mr. Harris' splendid career embodies a service of thirty-two consecutive years aboard the Chesapeake bay steamers owned by the Baltimore Steam Packet Co., a subsidiary of the Seaboard railway system. Mr. Harris came to Norfolk from Warrenton, N. C., while yet a lad, and, after trying several jobs, signed aboard the old side-wheeler steamer Virginia on Jan. 28, 1879, as a waiter. Only a few trips up and down the 188 mile stretch between Baltimore, Maryland, and Norfolk, and he decided that he liked the work, and thus started the long, inspiring career that has made him one of the most popular waiters the company has ever employed. A rough estimate gives us the interesting information that over the thirty-two year period he has served in the neighborhood of 199,680 persons. Among the most prominent of them Mr. Harris has the distinction of having such personages at his tables as ex-President Taft, George and Kindgon Gould, and, directly after the close of the Spanish-American war, Admiral Cervera and his son, who were then considered technical prisoners of the United States. Although his hair has grown white, the kindly eyes that look out upon the world today are brighter and show more vitality than many of the younger men. They become especially bright when he retrospects in the old days when the passengers feasted on frog's legs and canvasback duck, then strolled across the social hall and ordered Canadian Dry or that smooth, throat burning liquid known universally as White Horse. ANSWER Miss Marie Jones, Memphis, Tenn.: Your dream was indeed more than a dream; it was a vision and symbolizes the victory over the evil days in the passing of 1928. You can look forward to the protection you will get from your mother's family. The struggle you have had freeing from the dragon is depicted in the zeppelin, the victory ship, crossing to American shores from Europe. The angel, holding the reins over the chariot is your own self, gaining the mastership over the dragon. ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION by Julia Jerome A YOUNG LADY of Ovancock, Virginia, confides in us this week; Dear Mrs. Jerome: I am twenty years of age. I haven't any special friend now, but I had one. A boy who lives a short way from where I do has been keeping company with me off and on. But somehow we don't get along very well. He treats me fine till another girl comes along that he thinks he likes better. Then he will stop coming to my house for a while. But later on he always starts again. Now, I don't like this way of doing business. How can I stop it? I don't think he cares very much for me, do you? Now there is another boy that I Chesapeake to freeze so solidly that the passengers could climb overboard and stand on the chunks of ice. But one of the most interesting things the writer noted in interviewing this amiably dispositioned man, is that he looks and talks more like a successful business man than a salt-cured seaman. Three years after he became a member of the Virginia's crew, he married his second wife, and thus started the happy union that has given to the community in which they live a fine example of comradship. Their beautiful home at 1317 Calvert Street is a monument to their industriousness—even more so when one considers that throughout all these years they have been educating a son. And today Dr. Norman W. Harris holds an admirable position in the profession of medicine—thanks to his farsighted father—in one of the most important cities in the country, Washington, D. C. Thus Mr. Harris gradually reaps the glorious harvest of an industrious, conservative and thrifty life-a fine example for every young colored man in the country. 3 TREATMENTS Will prove to you that Queen is the greatest hair beautifier you have ever used. ROGERS ONE of the most daring pirates that ever lived, was Captain Bartholomew Roberts. Roberts was a Negro, born in England. Alexander Esquemelin, a Dutchman, who was also a pirate, and knew Roberts, says, in his book, "The Buccaneers of America:" "Roberts' was a tall black man, near 40 years of age, born at Neweybagh-nigh, Pembrokeshire of good natural parts and personal bravery." It was the pirates and buccaneers that did most to establish English dominion in the new world. Spain had claimed all America, but the pirates broke Spanish power on the seas. The Spaniards plundered the Indians of billions of dollars in gold and treasure. The pirates, meeting the Spaniards on the seas, and sometimes on land, plundered them in turn. Of course when there were no Spaniards in sight they plundered other ships. In all of this Roberts was one of the foremost. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "The most notorious of the freebooters was Bartholomew Roberts. Roberts was the nearest known approach to the pirate of romance: ostentatious, brave, and not without touches of generosity." CHOSEN FOR HIS BRAVERY When Roberts left England in November, 1719, he had no thought of ever being a pirate. He was second mate of an English ship bound for Guinea for a cargo of slaves. But it was an age when individuals were making fortunes by piracy, and when the captain, Davis, suggested that all become pirates, Roberts was one of the first to consent. They began by attacking the Isle of Princes, a Portuguese possession off the coast of Africa. In the attack Capt. CHOSEN FOR HIS BRAVERY "It is my opinion," said one of the leaders, according to Esquemelin, "that while we are sober we pick a man of courage and skilled in navigation—one who by his counsel and bravery seems best to lead us. "Such a one I take Roberts to be—a fellow in all respects worthy of your esteem and favor." The rank of captain, obtained by vote, thus fell on one superior for boldness and knowledge, and Roberts exceeded his fellows in this respect. PLANS REVENGE Roberts' first move was to seek revenge for the death of Captain Davis, and attacking the Portuguese captured their town. His men after plundering it, would have burnt and killed all the inhabitants, but Roberts prevailed upon them not to. For a pirate he was a very merciful man, as will be seen. Soon after this he fell in with two other ships, a Dutch one and an English, and he captured them both. But instead of putting the crews to death—dead men tell no tales—he spared their lives. His next move was to sail for the West Indies where he accomplished one of the most daring and spectacular feats in the history of piracy. When he arrived off the port of Los Todos Santos in Central America he saw a fleet of 42 ships, richly loaded with treasure on its way to Lisbon, Portugal. The ships were at anchor. They were waiting for their escort of two warships which were loading supplies at the dock. All of the other ships were armed, too. Each one was as strong as Roberts' ship. They outnumbered MAGIC HOPPING him 44 to one. But he made up his mind to capture the richest ship there. All he wanted was to know which one it was. A DARING CAPTURE Sailing boldly in and mixing with the fleet he kept his men hidden until he had come upon one of the largest ships. Going aboard this in broad daylight Roberts induced the captain to come aboard his ship. There he made him prisoner, and with a pistol in his back he commanded him to point out the richest ship. The captain, accordingly, showed him one of the largest ships there, much bigger than Roberts' own and armed with 40 guns. Using the captain as a snare Roberts now sailed boldly toward the treasure ship. But the captain of the latter had learnt of the trick in some way, and while pretending to receive Roberts in a friendly manner, was swinging his ship around GRAY HAIR NO MESSY DYE! At the sound of firing and the sight of the pirate flag the fleet was in a panic. The warships started for the scene of action, but in the meantime Roberts had boarded the ship, and captured her. "They found this ship," said Esquemelin "exceedingly rich. It was laden with sugar, skins, tobacco, in gold 40,000 moldore, besides clothing and trinkets of considerable value. Above all was a cross of gold set with diamonds, a present for the king of Portugal." All in all about a million and a half dollars in our money. CAPTURES AMERICAN SHIP After this Roberts now sailed into North American waters, and captured two ships off Providence, Rhode Island. Then he sailed back to Barbadoes, but the governor there sent two warships after him, disguised as merchantmen. Roberts, thinking them easy prey, attacked them, but they opened fire on him. He escaped only by throwing all his guns overboard. This had lightened the ship, making escape easier. Capturing ship after ship he once more sailed for North America. Arriving off Nova Scotia he sailed into ports flying the black flag, beating drums, and sounding trumpets at which the crews of some 20 ships in the harbor fled ashore. Plundering all of them, and burning all but one, which he took with him, he sailed for the French West Indies, capturing on the way two ships, one of which, the Samuel, was very rich Roberts, by this time had become the terror of the seas. He was a dashing figure, beloved of his men, Esquemelin describes him as "a gallant figure in a damask waistcoat and breeches, a red feather in his hat, a gold chain around his neck with a diamond cross hanging to it." The pirate boys on board had a jolly time, drinking, singing, plundering as the whim took them. PLUNDERS THE SEAS Soon after he shifted his activities to the west coast of Africa, capturing ship after ship, among them a fine English one, named the Onslow. He changed her name to the Royal Fortune, and mounted 40 guns on her. As to the passengers he freed them all except a preacher, whom he wished to keep. He offered the preacher an easy life and plenty of money saying that all he would have to do was to say prayers and mix the rum punch. Have you ever dreamed and planned and hoped that some day you may write a poem that will be read and sung 'round the world, and bring you fame and fortune? Or have you thought of writing a book that will sell by the thousands of copies, bringing happiness to your readers, and giving you a place in the world of books and writers? If you have, then there is a chance that your hopes may be founded on some real talent. There are many men and women—young and old alike—who have talent for writing, but they say to themselves that they do not have a chance. They nurse their little hope in their hearts, afraid to say anything for fear people will laugh at them. Obstacles Dic Mrs. M. Georgia Douglas Johnson Obstacles Didn't Stop Her 1930 Mrs. M. T. Both white and black praise her and her children. She also has a record of having never been attended by a physician. But the story really begins years ago when death took her young husband and left her a widow in the prime of life. He left his business in a confusion. Besides she had four small sons, the crops to gather, debts to settle, and she was far from well. Creditors tormented her day and night. And Mrs. Talston could have easily evaded paying the indebtedness altogether. But she couldn't. She disposed of farm implements, cattle, horses and mules, and paid the indebtedness every honest way she could. Then when her resources were finally exhausted, S. H. Hunt, a kind-hearted white merchant, who was one of the creditors, assumed responsibility for the rest of the indebtedness. That fall Mrs. Talston gathered seven bales of cotton and applied GENUINE 6TH & 7TH BOOK OF MOSES BLACK ART AND OTHER HARE BOOKS STAR BOOK CO. CAMDEN, N.J. Cat. Free DEPT. She has a wonderful place in the writing world, but when we look at the way she writes, the reason is clear enough. She has natural writing talent. She has intuition, or that psychic sense that helps her to feel what she puts into words. She is cheerful; she looks for tomorrow to be a better day than today has been. At heart she is musical—with the kind of music that makes poetry. Georgia Douglas Johnson is a natural diplomat. She can smooth out troubled waters. She finds words and expresses herself easily. Do you and your husband yearn for a baby's arms and a baby's smile? Nature does not intend that any woman should be childless. When she is, it is usually due to some weakness or disorder of the organs of reproduction. When these organs are properly toned up, invigorated and helped to function properly, the blessings of motherhood may be realized. Many women are now praising a remarkable new treatment called Gen-Tone and expressing their gratitude for what it has done for them. Intended as an aid in revitalizing the organs of reproduction, many report also that it helped to relieve many of the ailments common to women, such as bearing-down and periodical pains, etc., and aids them to lead happier and more companionable lives. ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION good imagination, and likes travel. There is still another important trait in her character. It is something you must have if you are to make a success in your own work, no matter whether you have talent for handling machinery or writing songs or preaching sermons. This is self-reliance. Georgia Douglas Johnson has faith enough in herself to try. She is willing to do her best, no matter what she undertakes. She doesn't ask someone, else to help her before she has done all that she can do. This is what counts. If you believe in yourself and are willing to do your work, you may have only a very little talent, but you will succeed. This is part of the explanation for the success that this poet is making. She is willing to try; she says "I can," and then goes ahead. Your writing need not look like this signature; it may be slanted very far forward or it may be backhand, and your letters may not be smoothly made as they are in this case; they may be sharp-pointed at the top, and you may think it is very "poor" writing indeed. Still it will show your talent. Some of our most famous poets are not "good" writers, but their handwriting shows their talent just the same. Well, if you throw rocks long enough someone is going to heave something at you. That's what happened to the Phillies in 1907. This same Rude Foster began a renaissance in Negro basebal. He did it by demanding higher pay and leaving the club when the owner refused to give it to him. In the revolt with Rube were Pete Booker, Nate Harris, Mike Moore, Bill Bowman and others. Petway behind the mask and Danny McClellan on the mound! They went west, those merry men, and they played Rube Foster's Chicago American Giants in Detroit. Licked him three out of four and Rube, who had already booked them for Chicago, refused to play them there! But Rube licked his former boss at the last. In 1909 the big man with the big voice grabbed Lloyd, Petway and Hill from that coterie of stars and dealt a lethal blow to Walter Schlichter's aspirations in the field of Negro baseball. The lean years were on the Philadelphia Giants and the color was gone in 1909 and 1910. Then, in 1911, Danny McClellan, "Old Faithful," who had resisted the lure of Lamer, of Connors, of Foster, went to the Lincoln Giants to help reorganize that club. Text by GEORGE S. SCHUYLER Drawn by HAZEL KEELER A boy reading a book. Toussaint was now selected as leader of the insurrection 10 The Great Philadelphia Giants (Continued from Page 9) had split and with Jess and Ed had gone the flower of the club to become the "Lincoln Stars." McClellan, passed the peak as a pitcher, even then was noted as a developer of baseball players, and he joined the house of Keenan as a player-coach. In 1904 Danny had pitched one of the games for "the book." In those times the Tri-State league was a thorn in the flesh of organized baseball. To it had jumped the malcontents and the men who wanted higher pay. It was a haven for big league ball players who figured they were getting a raw deal. McClellan held York, then boasting a major league lineup with such men as Billups, Donohue, Ward, Nallin and Maxwell, to no hits, no runs, no man reach first! On their southern trip in 1911 the Philadelphia Giants had picked up Dick Redding and Louie Santop, a giant battery. They brought them out of the sticks and the pair became famous almost overnight. But two men don't make a ball club and Rube Foster had done his work too well for the Phillies to survive. Pay days were being missed, games were being cancelled, all was wrong with the world. Most of the stars who were still with the colors tock a hop, step and jump to other teams — Santop and Redding among them—and ere the season was out the Philadelphia Giants were but a memory. In 1920 there were over 332,000 Negroes in skilled and unskilled occupations in the field of manufacturing and mechanical industries. In 1924 there were 73 Negro banks with a total capital of 6,250,000 dollars and with resources of 20,000,000 dollars. Those banks are doing an annual business of about 100,000,000 dollars. There are four Negro associations in the United States for political advancement. There are 91 towns and settlements in the United States populated and governed entirely or almost entirely by Negroes. It A. B. Ed Bolden, Manager of the Hilldale Team went 19 innings and we won out when Bunnie Downs scored from second base on an infield single, that being the only run of the game." I asked him who was the greatest player he had ever owned and the 'Chief' could not reply so readily. "That's hard to say," quoth he. 'Many an athlete of superb ability has come and gone since we entered the game. To single out any man and say that he surpassed all others would be impossible. In fact, I would not attempt to pick out the best man or each position on the club. While it would be easy for some spots like first base, what would I do when I got to the outfield and had to consider White, Barbour, Charleston, Thomas, Briggs, George Johnson and their high class men? And what about shortstop and the pitchers and the catchers? Ah, no, you'll never met me in that crack!' There's a peculiar thing about Clan parble. This is perhaps the only club which has never had a Cuban ball layer on its roll. However, 1929 may cite a different story. Cappie harleston spent the winter in the lands and I know he did not go ere just to play baseball. He anted an intimate and sustained ok-see at several athletes, and if ey meet his approval—well, as I ave typed, 1929 may unfold a new ature. Voices in loud altercation floated up from the well beneath the grill work. "Bum? Who says I'm a bum?" the voice was loud and shrill. The voice of futile old age raised in shrill argument. "Mr. Barry Dwane tells me to meet him on the second floor of this here apartment at 10 o'clock this mornin' an' I'm goln' to meet him there or know the reason why." Zola and the Chocolate Kid exchanged startled stares at the shrilly screamed words. With one accord both of them stepped toward the elevator door. Then, with a commanding nod the Chocolate Kid motioned Zola away. Shrill protests were bombarding their ears still from below as he gave the woman some low toned instructions. "Go on with your work, Zola. Keep your back turned and listen. There's more to this than appears on the surface. I'll wait here to see if he comes up, if he doesn't, then—well—" The whirr of the ascending elevator cut the words short. The man stood carelessly poised as though waiting casually in his corridor for some one. The scrub woman with the oddly graceful movements went on with her business of collecting mops and brooms from where they lay scattered on the floor. End of the 10th Installment. Obstacles Didn't Stop Her (Continued from Page 7) of her husband, her youngest son was born. The next year, by working hard and practicing rigid economy, she managed to frighten the wolf from the door. She was elated. It was a triumph that gave her confidence in her ability to forge ahead in the world. So she contracted to buy some land. Meanwhile her two oldest sons had become school age. Being illiterate herself, she resolved that her children would not be the victim of the same misfortune as she. So she worked, rain or shine, and sent them to school. Years passed. And she remained a widow. She was afraid a step-father would be cruel to her children and deny them the benefit of an education. So, rather than subject her beloved ones to the danger of growing up ignorant, she toiled on by herself until they came to her rescue. She trained her sons to work and to be honest. Finally her land was paid for. Then her neighbors declared that she had done much better than most men. Why her sons were better off than most boys with living fathers! They had a home, were better equipped with education than other boys, and were respectful to older folks. Mrs. Talston accepted this praise from her friends as a matter of course without excessive comment. She lives quietly and happily with her children.
