WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE
WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE
Big Ott, gang leader and crook, has killed a man in a bank robbery. David Conway, a young country boy, is in prison accused of the crime. Zola, a beautiful and mysterious cabaret dancer with whom Ott is enamoured, tries to save David. Ott has her kid-naped by the Chocolate Kid, an aviator. He takes her to The Nest, a hut in the woods, owned and maintained by Anson Bledsoe, a hypocritical townman and enemy of David's. Later the same aviator helps Zola escape and shelters her in his own apartment. But she slips away and goes to David's mother in an effort to plan for his freedom. Seeing Ott and Anson Bledsoe in close conversation while she is hidden by David's mother in the boy's old room she makes her way by means of a big tree growing outside of the window, down to the street and stalks them to a questionable resort, where she overhears their plans for robbing the village bank. She thwarts their plans but is compelled to leave without seeing David's mother again although she leaves certain documents that she has written in the room, sealed. Meanwhile Big Ott, arrested in the attempt to rob the bank, meets an old derelict, John Belling, in the jail, and through outside influence has him released to take a message to the Chocolate Kid. Zola, disguised as a scrub woman, is confronted in the hallway of the exclusive apartment where he lives. They discover that Ott has been double crossing them both and while they are planning to join forces old John Belling appears with the message that the Kid will find certain directions at The Nest which will tell him where to find the swag that Ott has hidden away. Young Barry Dawne is in at the conference. John Belling cries out when he sees Zola. Now go on with the story.
CHAPTER 12
A
THE same moment that the surprised ejaculation burst from old John Belling's lips at sight of Zola, the dancer, in her character of scrubwoman, another dramatic in-
cident was occurring at The Nest ANGLE APPEARS
Pale-faced and haggard, the girl Angie listened to the brutally heartless words that terminated her sordid love affair with Anson Bledsoe. With that tenacious loyalty that is so often and so strangely allied with depraved morals, the girl had spirited the wounded man to this secret rendezvous that he had built and equipped for illicit amours. There she had nursed and tended him in secret until the wound he had received as he escaped from the net spread for him and Ott by Zola's message to the marshal, was completely healed. Eagerly she had waited for this day. She greeted it with a song upon her lips. All morning she sang little snatches of gay songs in her preparations for departure.
Now, as the sound of the livery car could be heard chugging in the old wood's road, just beyond the circle of trees, she stood in frozen horror and fear before the man whom she had loved so desperately. Her house of cards had fallen around her.
"What did you expect?" the words were coldly indifferent, crisply conclusive. "Think I'm going to ruin my reputation in Etingford by taking you back there with me? How'd I explain being in your company when the folks think I am away on Sunday school money, thinking and planning Sunday school activities?" He laughed, sardonically.
"But Anson, what can I do in my condition—out here alone, miles from any help? You can't mean to leave me now. You said—," the girl's voice broke with the strength of the emotions that gripped her heart.
ANSON QUITS
"Oh, h—l! can the sob stuff," brutality could go no further than the look in the Sunday school superintendent's eyes and manner. "Ain't I paid you? I been keeping up the whole works down there for you and your mother ain't I? You've had it pretty good I say. Just a few hours a day over at Stonyman's Place and the rest of the time my money to keep you going. If you didn't have any more sense than to get caught well—that's just your bad lookout. I'm through."
The look of terror on the girl's pretty, dissipated face became one of wild, panicky fear.
"Oh, but Anson! Anson! I'm afraid—you can't mean to leave me alone, you can't! Not now. If you just wait, stay with me till—till it's over—" She had thrown herself on him, wound her arms with the relentless grip of fear around his legs while she grovelled at his feet. A change crept over the sleek, handsome face of the yellow villian. A crafty look entered his eyes. His cruel lips stretched themselves into a cunning smile. "Aw, now, snap out of it, Angle, there was just enough of the old tone

GREAT!
KEEP young inside, and you needn't slow-down at fifty. Men and women who long for the energies they used to have, should investigate the powers of Peruna! You don't take this time-honored tonic on faith — real results commence with the very first spoonful. A better appetite at once; a decided day-by-day improvement in digestion, assimilation, and elimination. One bottle can clear the stomach completely of that catarrhal condition that has so many people feeling "sunk." And the stimulation stays by you. It's the organs — not the nerves — that are stimulated. That's the difference between Peruna, and a lot of things called tonics! Ask your druggist.

PROPER CARE of the CHILD
THE CARE OF THE CHILD. By Alton Goldbloom, M.D. Published by Longmans, Green and Co. New York. 240 pp. Price, $1.50.
NOTHER title for this interesting and helpful book is "A Guide for Perplexed Mothers." There is no doubt that this book fills a much needed part in discussing problems which often confront the mother of children of tender age.
It begins with the day-old infant and carries its development through the period when close attention should be given by the mother to the child's growth. Many practical suggestions are given which if followed would do much to decrease the infant mortality rate. In reading this book and comparing its timely scientific advice with the frequent practices of well-meaning but unenlightened mothers, one is almost amazed at the various outworn customs and "voodoos" employed on unsuspecting infants. Mistakes are made which affect the entire later development of the child. It is not until one reads such a scientific and instructive book as this that it can be observed how important are such details as correctly feeding the infant and correct method of artificially feeding them. It is common knowledge that incorrectly holding the baby may impair its correct physical growth, but it is seldom that one finds this and numerous other topics on child-care so clearly and directly discussed.
For the mother who wishes to assume no risks in developing her child to its maximum health and capacity, it is advisable to read this book.
It contains an index of seven pages which facilitates easy location of all the major topics in child care.
After reading its 240 pages one regrets that it was not elaborated to a much greater length.

HOW TO KEEP WELL
There are two processes continually taking place in your body. One is the building up of your BONE, BLOOD, NERVE and TISSUE, the other is the carrying off of the waste matter and impurities. For every ounce of food you eat or liquid you drink, there is almost an ounce of waste matter that should be eliminated by the way of your KIDNEYS and BOWELS.
If your LIVER and KIDNEYS fail to do their duty, portions of this waste matter remain in your stomach and intestines where they ferment, sour and decay, causing INDIGESTION, SOUR, STOMACH, KIDNEY TROUBLE, etc. These impurities are also taken up by your blood and carried to all parts of your system, causing a general run-down condition and IMPURE BLOOD.
The surest way to keep well is to keep your liver and kidneys active, your bowels regular, your blood pure and your system clean. There is no better medicine for this purpose than Spicer's Nux-Herbs and Iron. It is a laxative diuretic and tonic of proven merit, a medicine that acts directly on your liver, kidneys, bowels and blood.

RECENT news dispatch from Cuba telling of a Government ban on the beating of the African "bonga drum" brings to mind some facts about that ancient musical instrument that are little known to the average person. Negroes constitute
a large part of the population of Cuba. They were not emancipated until very late in the nineteenth century, and importations of slaves continued, though illegally, to Cuba until well after the Civil War in the United States. Consequently the Negroes in Cuba are not as far removed from their African heritage as the black people in the United States. They still use the African drum in religious ceremonies and voodoo rites, and occasionally to transmit messages, as do the natives in Africa. In addition to Cuba's regular Negro population, thousands of primitive black people from Haiti and

Jamaica are imported each year to help with the sugar harvest. All of these still use the African drum. Those who have never heard one of these drums can have no adequate idea of its effect on the hearer. Indeed, there is no telling how the drum will affect a person. Whoever hears one of these drums beaten is aroused, whether he be illiterate or a Harvard graduate. Many people
are made gloomy and sad; others are made savage and maniacal. All, of course, depends on who is beating the drum. The drums are beaten with two sticks with knobs on their heads, covered with skin or felt, and there is an art in doing it. Depending on the way the drum is beaten, the beater can bring on sadness, apprehension or wild emotion. The secret has been handed down for centuries from the heart of the African jungle. Only those who have been specially instructed know how to beat these drums to get the right effect. The drum itself is made out of a long, hallowed log, covered at

The Assyrians and Persians also had the drum, but they got it from India, which was once entirely ruled by black people. his drum from the Negro. In ancient times it was used as a musical instrument and it is still used for that purpose, except in African countries, where it is uged also as a telegraph instrument. It has been the wonder of white people traveling in the jungles of Africa that natives should know of their coming several days before they arrived through the equatorial forest. Later they learned that the natives, supposed to be ignorant, had evolved a system of beats similar to our telegraphic code language, by which they could convey any information over thousands of square miles of territory in a few seconds.

Often columns of European troops invading the African hinterland have been detected and led to slaughter through the medium of the drum.
The African drum is not beaten very loudly. Some of them are even beaten with the open palms of the hands. Nevertheless they carry for miles, and then the message is taken up by other drums until the whole countryside has the news. Another peculiar fact about the African drum is that it is very difficult to locate even when one is close to it. Among the Ba-Kwiri, a Bantu nation of German Cameroon, West Africa, as well as among their neighbors, the Dualla, there is a very peculiar drum language that has puzzled scientists to the present day. News is sent from tribe to tribe and from clan to clan in this manner. Slaves and women are not allowed to master this drum language, but all who are full-fledged male members are bound to repeat it, so as to pass the message on. The Ba-Kwiri, who are a most intelligent and brave people, also possess a horn language by which they send messages through the length and breadth of their land.
The drum has made jazz music what it is today. The credit for this must go to the Negro, who made the drum the important piece it is in the modern orchestra. Before the drum became so prominent in the rendition

Is Your Marry Happy On
Is Your Marriage Happy One?
This book aims to impress the fact that a touch of common sense in the marriage relation will go much farther than mutual abuse and impatience with perfectly natural human frailties. It points a clear-cut path to marital happiness. The authors have presented solutions to marital difficulties which are difficult to uproot, if at all.
the book is direct, open, and illuminating. One is both delighted and fascinated at the clean, intimate approach to problems which shy young couples are often too timid to discuss. In this regard, this book ought to interest middle-aged and elderly couples, for they are not infrequently leading unhappy married lives, due to a misplaced adherence to outworn traditions of false prides and modesties. Too often, they forget that a happy marriage is an intelligent adjustment of individual differences and shortcomings and not a subjection of one personality to another.
One wonders why a chapter was not included on "The Other Man" to complement the chapter on "The Other Woman." had thought as liberally fifteen years ago as thy do now about divorce, you probably would not have waited for accidents to rescue you, but would have rescued yourself.
Julia Jerome
I believe your first duty is to yourself, because unless you are happy you will not be able to make others happy. It is impossible for a woman to perform her duties efficiently in the home if her heart is not in it. Haven't you noticed that when people are happy themselves they are kinder to others? It is the man or woman who is soured on the world—who is unhappy, in other words—who is the most exacting and intolerant.
WE hear this week from New Orleans. "My Dear Mrs. Jerome: I have been married fifteen years. Fourteen of those fifteen years I have spent quarrelling with my husband. I should have left him years ago, but a false optimism kept me clinging on, hoping that children or habit or something would solve our troubles. Now I am nearly forty and have five children to further complicate matters. I have also found love elsewhere, but because three of my children are mere babies I feel that I would be doing both them and their father an injustice to separate at this time. Yet my home life is driving me crazy. Could you advise me?"—"Middle Aged.
QUARRELS BAD EXAMPLE Besides, your constant quarrelling will influence your children's dispositions. Children, unconsciously or otherwise, imitate their parents. You will also by your example instill in them a suspicion and dislike of marriage in general. In fact, I think the widespread skepticism toward marriage manifested by modern youth today is mainly a result of having watched the disputes and petty bickering of parents married in the old-fashioned way, "for bad or worse." It is better that children be separated from one of their parents than that they should grow up feeling disgust for both of them.
I believe that your first duty is to yourself. You have wasted enough of your life, M., on that husband. I don't know whose fault it is that you don't get along—probably the blame is equally divided—but if in fifteen years you have not been able to straighten out either him or yourself, it is time you quit. If people

IF there's anybody around who hasn't gone wild over "IT'S TIGHT LIKE THAT," they're just walkin' around with their ears plugged tight. white worms, and then I dug in the ground and found earth worms to fish with, but didn't fish any.
Then I climbed the hill to the top without any trouble. At one side of the hill was a bridge and at the bottom of the hill was a creek, but all of the water had dried out of it. Then I came to a narrow stream of water and it was clear, and I stood and gazed in the stream. And up above me was someone kicking dirt in the stream and I could see the dirt pass under the clear water.

Black-cat bones, the powdered dust of monkey ribs, and the charms of the most inspired medicine men could not alleviate the suffering of an apparently doomed people.
Other Horrible Diseases The three other sources of horror were hookworm, dysentery and black-water fever. The most ghastly and gruesome of these is the dreaded hookworm. Here is a small insect that pinches and pushes stealthily into human flesh to cause terrible misery and agonizing pain. It can lay to waste whole villages of natives. The human being attacked by it walks about jubilantly, entirely unaware of the dreadful fate that awaits him. Then he is stricken down. The hookworm does not attack singly, but comes in droves. Until medical science and skill came to his rescue, the dark-skinned native of

OSSIBLY the most unusual and interesting of fancy careers of colored vaudeville players is that of Maitland and Wheeldin, international boxeuse. On their return to the United States the following, description of their affable sojourn abroad, appeared in a well known national theatrical weekly, Variety (white), during the winter of 1926:
"Two American colored girls, Emma Maitland and Aurelia Wheeldin, returned to New York aboard the La France of the French line. Those unique personages hung up a remarkable record hardly enjoyed by any other Negro women."
For twenty-two months they played in Paris, Milan, Rome, Genoa, Turin, Verona, Brussels, Zurich, Amsterdam and other European capitals. They left New York in October, 1924, and during their travels encountered some of the most exciting and hazardous experiences. One which they vividly relate was the Belgian flood, when the girls were marooned for five days in a hotel without food, heat, light or water. Traveling alone and able to speak only their mother tongue, their courageous aspirations are indisputable.
Having been trained in the art of prize fighting, they are given the distinction of being the only real professional female boxers on the American stage. Their dogmatic prowess easily makes them the peers of their profession. The treatment and courtesy accorded them by their European friends, they declare, were the most cordial and their color at no time brought them any embarrassment.
FORMER SCHOOL TEACHER Emma Maitland, who acted as the manager, is an ambitious young woman of athletic type, comely figure and pleasing personality, but acutely conservative. She was born in Richmond, Virginia, the eldest daughter of a large family, containing seven brothers, all her junior. She attributes her terrific blows in boxing as having been inspired at home at the hands and rough handling of her brothers. Being the eldest, it always fell upon her the duty of attesting the obedience of the youngsters and husky lads, who held little esteem for her sex. Completing her education in the public schools, she spent some time at the Rock Castle convent, Union university and Mannasas, finally accepting a position as a teacher in the

Second, they were the first Afro-American girls imported for such amusement in the famed French capital. Emma is a recognized junior lightweight and classed by experts as the best female boxer in her profession. The other half of this inimitable team is Aurella Wheeldin.
WESTERN GIRL
The petite and demure Aurella Wheeldin is a native of St. Paul, Minn., and is very similar to her distinguished opponent in vaudeville boxing, especially in personality, habit and manner.
She finished the Mechanics Arts High School at the Twin City and entered her first employment as stock girl in a large department store where she creditably served u-til she made her way East. While visiting a relative in Brooklyn, she was attracted to the stage via the "pretty face-plump limbed" route and she, too, conceived no idea of such a glittered career in the old world of civilization.
Miss Wheeldin, too as her partner, held high aspirations in life and studied music at Macalaster College, the same time taking up beauty culture, in which she received a diploma. She prizes highly the wholesome teachings of her home life, and during her successes made it possible provide a home for herself and mother, where she now resides. Incidentally, her partner, Miss Maitland, also occupies an apartment in the same building, and he, mother too greatly enjoys the hospitality of a daughter.
Since the return to America of Maitland and Wheeldin, they have added Gertrude Chambers, a sister of Miss Maitland, to the act, having elaborated extensive music and dancing features, supplementing the prize fighting. Miss Chambers, a petite, demure little dancer who has toured the country several months with a vaudeville act, makes a decided re-

N A LAND where black men count for almost nothing, the story of Bilal Ibn Rahab will sound like a fairy tale. But it is none the less true. Bilal was a Negro slave who rose to be second in the vastest empire the world has ever seen.
This empire was the one founded by Mahomet. It stretched from Africa along both shores of the Mediterranean Sea to Japan—more than half way around the world. It was larger than North America and South America put together.
It was vastor by several times than the combined empires of Caesar, Napoleon and Alexander. Today, more than a thousand years later, upward of 500,000,000 souls acknowledge Mahomet. Nine out of ten Negroes in all the world who believe in any religion are of this faith.

a belief in one God.
WAS PERSECUTED
But, like Christ, he had great difficulty. Only the poor and the oppressed would listen to him. Among them was the wretched slave, Bilal, who was his first convert.
Other slaves followed and the masters began to take fright at the spread of the new religion with its advanced ideas. Bilal's master, Omeyya, beat him cruelly, and so did the other masters their slaves. In the words of Sir William Muir ("Life of Mahomet.")
"The brunt of their wrath fell upon the converted slaves and strangers and the weak and the poor of the lower classes, who had no protector. They were seized and imprisoned; or they were exposed to the scorching gravel of the valley, to the intense glare of the midday sun. The torment was increased by intolerable thirst until the wretched sufferers hardly knew what was said.
"If under the torture they reviled Mahomet and acknowledged the idols of Mecca, they were refreshed with draughts of water and taken to their homes. Bilal alone escaped the shame of recantation. He would not yield.

pire Spread from ocean to ocean.
Through Asia, seuthern Europe and
north Africa Islam swept like a prai-
rie fire. Akhbah, one of the great
Islamic generals, swept all before
him until stopped by the sea. Then
he spurred his horse into the Atlan-
tie, and, flourishing his sword aloft,
cried in a frenzy of victory:
“Great God! If my course were
not stopped by the séa I would still
go on to the unknown kingdom ot
the West, preaching the unity of Thy
Holy Word and putting to the sword
all who do not worship Thee!”
Later Mohammedanism almost de-
feated Christianity. Only a quarrel
‘mong the Mohammedan chiefe pre-
vented this.
BECAME HIGH PRIEST
Bilal, as was said, played a very
prominent part in bringing all of this
about. Mahomet rewarded his con-
staney by making him high priest of
the new religion.
Prayer was the great strength of
the new religion, as it is of any reit-
‘sion, and Bilal could pray more fer:
vently than anyone else. After one
of bis prayers the soldiers would be
stirred to fury of action.
Without prayer and the belief in
Paradise the new religion would not
have gone very far. Prayer stirrea
them into action, while paradise held
out sch great hopes that they were
eager to die.
The paradise of Mahomet was far
more alluring than the Christian one,
of which it was an elaboration. Not
only were there milk and honey, but
there were sumptuous palaces of the
finest gold, with great banquet tables
at which thousands of attendants
bore the choicest food on golden
Plates. Each one had 200 dishes put
before him at once. He could eat of
all of them at once without getting
filled, or without ever being subect
to the routine of Nature.
‘There was also Taba, the wonder-
ful tree of life, which was so large
that the swiftest horse would take
150 years to cross its shade. The
boughs of this wonderful tree were
Jaden with every kind of good thing
to eat, and they bent down toward
one at the slightest wish.
But above ail there were the Hur-
al-Oyun, or black-eyed daughters of
Paradise. They had beautiful, well-
rounded bodies, fresh with eternal
youth. Seventy-two of these beau-
tiful creatures were given to every
believer, who himself possessed eter-
nal youth.
If a believer died in battle he went
straight into the midst of all this.
If he did not die there were the pros-
pects also of the spoils of battle. No
matter what happened, the /believer
could not lose
All the richness of Eastern imagt-
nation was drawn on by Mahomet
and Bilal in making their paradise
the most attractive of all the reli-
gions. And so it remains to this day.
The important task of keeping
‘alive all this in the minds of the
faithful was left to Bilal, Mahomet
was busy with the plans of battle
and government. Each morning at
si€ o'clock Bilal would call the faitb-
ful to worship with the words:
“Great is the Lord! Great is the
Lord! I bear witness that there is
no God but the Lord! 1 bear witness
that Mahomet is the Prophet of God!
Come unto prayer! Come unto sal-
yation! God ix great! God is great!
‘There isno God but the Lord! Prayer
is better than sleep! Prayer is bet-
ter than. sleep!”
STARTED ARABIC CUSTOM
Today the Arabic equivalent of
these’ words is uttered from each
ymosque at the same_hour, just as
they were uttered by Bilal. To those
who have lived in Mohammedan coun-
tries, the Azan, or call to prayer, is
unforgettable.
After waking Mahomet each morn-

‘ing with the words, “To prayer, oh!

the followers in prayer. He continued
‘to do this even after Mahomet haé

day. ‘The two were inseparable. In
addition to being high priest, Bila)
‘was high treasurer and the one whose
duty it was to receive and entertain
the diplomats and the high guests.
Bilal saw that prayer was held, no
matter what was about to happen.
At the battle of Ohod, even while
the enemy was advancing and all
seemed lost for Mahomet, Bilal made
the soldiers kneel for prayer. In-
spired by his fiery zeal, they swept
on the foe, turning what seemed cer-
‘tain defeat into victory.
Later Bilal got even with bis mas-
ter, Omeyya. After the battle of
Bedr, Omeyya, wishing to save his
life and that of his son, surrendered
to Rhaman, one of the victorious gen-
erals. Rhaman, on learning of the
prisoner's rank, was anxious to take
him to Mahomet. But Bilal, spying
his old enemy, and knowing Mahom-
et’s merciful disposition, shouted to
the soldiers:
“Slay him! Slay him! That man
is the chief of the unbelievers! If
he lives I am lost! Kill him! Kill
him!” And Omeyya and his son were
killed.
WAS MAHOMET’S MESENGER”
At another time Mahomet sent him
to fetch the beautiful Safia, whom he
intended to make his wife. It was
after a great battle, and Bilal pur-

with its heaps of slain, and then

Me, though I could not see them.”
Near his death Mahomet asked
that Bilal be named as his successor,
but afterward Bilal yielded in favor
of Abu Bekr. After Mahomet’s death
Bilal’s influet.ee continued. At the
capture of Jerusalem he rode through
the streets on the right hand of Omar,
Mahomet’s successor but one. En-
tering the temple, Bilal threw out all
the Christian images and prepared It
for the worship of Islam,
His power lasted until his death.
On one occasion when Kohbab, an-

had fought, Omar rose from the
throne, and seated Khobab thereon,
saying:
“There is but one man in all the
empire more worthy of the honor
than you, Khubab, and that is Bilal.”
Bilal was insulted at least once be-
cause of his color, and that was by
the Christian general, Prince Con-
stantine.
Amru, the Moharnmedan general,
Was about to capture Syria, and the
King of Syria sent a Christian priest
to ask for terms,
Amru sent Bilal to arrange the
terms, but the priest hesitated to
take him, which proved that he knew
his master well, for when Prince
Constantine saw Bilal he refused to
deal with him.
