The Black General Who Routed Spain's Armies
Gen. Antonio Maceo Humbled Spain's Finest Horsemen—He Was the Most Powerful Figure in the Cuban Revolt By J. A. ROGERS
"HE HAD DON LEANDRO WHIPPED TO DEATH"

ENERAL ANTONIO MACEO, the Toussaint L'Ouverture of Cuba, is the last of the great patriots of history. No man since, fighting in the cause of his country's freedom, has so captivated the imagination and attention of the world.
The writer was a child at the time, but he recalls with what breathless interest the civilized world followed the daring deeds of Maceo. He recalls the profound sorrow that swept over all the nations, save one, that December morning of 1896, when the news came that their hero had been killed in an ambush, betrayed by one of his own men.
Of Mixed Ancestry
Antonio Maceo was born at Majaguabo in the province of Santiago de Cuba in 1848. His grandfather, said to be of French descent, married a black woman. His father, Marco Maceo, married a black exslave, Marianne Grajale. He was thus three-fourths black and one-fourth white.
Until he was past 20 Maceo could neither read nor write. He began life as a driver of oxen on a sugar plantation, and worked later as a longshoreman. When the first Cuman insurrection broke in 1868, he was among the first to join, and ten years later when it was quelled he was the last to yield in spite of all promises.
From the start he proved such a whole-souled fighter and skilful leader that it was not long before he was made an officer, rising to the rank of general. When the "Ten Years' War," as the first revolt was known, came to an end, Maceo held out in the eastern provinces for several months, giving much trouble. At last he fled to Jamaica.
KILLS BRUTAL MASTER
During that war he did something that was characteristic of him. As a boy on the plantation of Don Leandro, he had seen Don Leandro order his slave-driver to strip a female slave to the waist, and then had her so brutally beaten that she died that evening. Maceo had pleaded in vain for her.
One of his first acts when he got command of some troops was to go to Don Leandro's mansion, call him to the door, where after a brief battle with him, he ordered him to be bound.
Assembling all the slaves—slavery was not abolished in Cuba until 1880—he had Don Leandro whipped to death before their eyes, after which he set fire to the mansion.
KILLS TREACHEROUS CAPTAIN
Maceo spent the next 17 years of his life as a roaming adventurer, conspiring in the meanwhile against the oppressors of his native land. He visited Mexico, Costa Rica, the United States, and Spanish Honduras.
In the latter country he served as a general for some time, and then with the fever of Cuban independence burning in his blood, he returned to Cuba. Starting another
insurrection he was captured and imprisoned, but escaping he fled to New York. There he worked resolutely, getting together money, arms and ammunition. When all was ready he started for Cuba. But the spies of Spain were busy in New York, and learning that Maceo was going to make a dash from the Bahamas into Cuba, offered the captain of the brig $25,000 to steer toward a Spanish warship.
Maceo discovered the plot in the nick of time and with a revolver at the captain's ear forced him to turn about and make for land. After landing his men and munitions, he tied the captain and two accomplices to the mast, staved in the brig, and as it was going shot the three traitors to death.
BEATS SPAIN'S GREATEST GENERAL
In the meantime the revolt in Cuba, stirred by Jose Marti, and being carried on by Gen. Gomez, was languishing. With the return of Maceo, all burst forth into life again and the population rushed to arms. On landing Maceo made a pledge that in less than three months he would sweep through the island and drive the Spaniards out of their stronghold at Havana. And he began by keeping his word. In battle after battle Maceo and his men drove the Spaniards before them, burning their plantations, spreading death and destruction in their march until they had driven the Spaniards into Guantanamo.
In the meantime Spain, alarmed at Maceo's success, sent out its ablest general, Marshal Campos. Campos was a man of tremendous prestige. He had been the victor of the first Cuban revolt, and was the most powerful figure in all Spain. He had returned the Bourbons to the throne of Spain and was known as the king maker.
But he was to meet one that was more than his match. Maceo marched to meet him, and coming up with him at Paralejo, defeated his greatly superior force so thoroughly that Campos, himself, barely escaped capture. Nothing seemed to

be able to stop the onslaught of these black heroes.
MACEO'S BLACK HEROES
For it must be noted that all but a handful of Maceo's men were negroes.
Franc Woodward, a white American newspaper correspondent with Maceo, said: "The party of Gen. Maceo is spoken of as the black party. It is composed exclusively of the darker-complexioned Cubans, although there are many white officers.
"In the army of Gen. Gomez, which is designated as the white party, there are not half a dozen colored men." Chas. Chapman, a white writer, says: "The Negroes had provided a majority of the army of liberation."
Maceo's black men were fighting for something more than Cuba's freedom. They were fighting for equality with their white and near-white fellow Cubans. After they had helped Cuba win her freedom, they themselves had to fight white and near-white Cubans for their own. Two thousand of them laid down their lives in a cause that again brought about American intervention. But that is another story. After his defeat Campos was recalled and Gen. Weyler, known as "Butcher" Weyler was sent in his place. But he also proved no match for Maceo. Weyler built great wide fortifications of barb wire, cement and bombs, known as trochas, across the island, but Maceo and his men crossed them at will.
BLACK MEN REFUSE BRIBES
Says one white writer:
"Away galloped the dark troopers,
mounted on the hardy Cuban horses,
lightly attired with no impediment
but their munition, American rifles
and their terrible machetes—which
a Cuban handles from his boyhood
as easily as he rides horses without

"The raiders swept over Puerto

Of all the leaders produced by the Cuban War the most colossal and imposing figure is General Antonio Maceo. Says Mr. Cummings, a noted author, "He was as swift on the march as either Sheridan or Stonewall Jackson, and equally as prudent and wary. He had flashes of military genius when a crisis arose. WOMEN dress with more individuality and taste than they did ten years ago, but have not as yet bestowed the same thought and attention upon their homes. They dress in short, simple and vividly colored frocks cleverly selected to set off their figures and complexions, but their surroundings remain ornate, drab and impersonal. To see a modernly dressed woman in the average house is like viewing a vivid modernistic picture in a clumsy ornate gold frame. The two do not go together. They represent two different periods of time. They clash.
The average home is a hodgepodge of drab, unrelated objects. One thing has scarcely any connection with another. Even if the suite of furniture goes together the rug will not click with the walls, the curtains and the pillows do not harmonize either in color or material, and the pictures and bric-a-brac are painfully without character or connection. It is natural that house
furnishings should lag behind clothes, but most of us would say that they have lagged long enough. Indeed, this is what the architects and artists are saying to us. At the Modern Industrial Arts exhibit now on view at the Metropolitan Museum in New York we see new ideas presented in interior decoration. They have considered everything from boudoir to office. Upon viewing the extensive display one is forced to conclude that never before has there been such soul-satisfying interiors. There may have been rooms as pleasing in ancient Greece or medieval Rome, but not in the last several hundred years, not since the beginning of factory-made furniture.
The thing which most strikes you in the exhibit is the simplicity of the new furniture. It has no fretwork or absurd knobs upon it. There are no unnecessary bulges and curves. It is made in direct straight lines or in simple ovals. In fact, the outlines of the furniture are very

similar to the straight lines and simple flouncing to be found in women's clothes. It is surprising how much better the modern woman and man dressed in modern straightline clothes look in these new surroundings.
The second thing which impresses you in the exhibit is the vivid coloring of the furniture and decorations. Brilliant blue furniture will be set upon a rose carpet and there
will be notes of green and violet and yellow in the curtains and pillows and bric-a-brac. There will often be but one picture, one vase or bowl in the whole room. But this picture or bowl will be so vivid in color yet so simple in outline that it will stand out amazingly. Candlesticks, a shelf of books, a piece of statuary, a pot-plant, a vase holding vivid artificial or natural flowers, a bowl holding fruit, or a single picture; these are the decorations most in favor.
House-furnishings have lagged behind clothes apparently because it cost so much more to refurnish a house than to buy a new outfit of clothes. For this reason it will be a long time before all our homes reflect the modern spirit. But if a woman has sufficient energy and imagination she can do her house over at small cost. She can at least do one or two rooms over. If she is clever she can do wonders to a room for just five dollars. Three dollars' worth of enamel (the slow drying enamel is easier put on and less expensive) will repaint the average set of furniture, and curtains in some pleasing bright color can be bought with the other two dollars. One can get lovely yellow, green, violet or pink curtain material for twenty-five cents a yard. If you can spend ten dollars then you can add sofa pillows to match the curtains in material or in color. If you use the same material for both it is nice to have them of contrasting colors.
I have a friend who had a set of mission furniture in her front room. It was dark in color, the walls were brown flowered paper and the rug was a horrible red-flowered thing, and her curtains were the ordinary white kind. Added to this she had chromos on her walls of all her family and a quantity of dissimilar knick-knacks cluttering the table and mantle. She did this atrocious room over and you should see it now. She painted the mission furniture, whose outlines were simple and good, a cool green with orange edges. She bought dark green sateen on sale for twenty-five cents a yard and hung her walls with it, using green thumb tacks. She dyed her white curtains pale green and bought orange sateen for drapes
April 27, 1929 around them. She replaced her red rug with green rag rugs. She packed all of her family chromos in the attic and dispensed with all her

LDERMAN AND MRS. MOORE are two of the best known citizens in New York and have a host of friends. They have had 50 years of wedded bliss. They were married in Washington, D. C., April 9, 1879, and 18 children resulted from their union, six of which are still alive, four daughters and two sons. There are also seven grand-children and four sons-in-law in the family.
Alderman Moore has had one of the most useful careers of any member of his race. He began life as a messenger in the treasury department at Washington and served in this capacity under four administrations. He came to New York City about 40 years ago and was for a number of years employed in the Western National Bank, later merged with the National Bank of Commerce. In 1907 he purchased the Colored American Magazine and a short time later secured control of The New York Age. He has been the editor and publisher of The Age for 20 years.
He has also been active in politics. He was the first Negro in Brooklyn to become the regularly designated candidate for the state assembly and was defeated in a district nearly two-thirds white by less than 100 votes. That was in 1901. President LUCKY HAND DRAW ANYTHING YOU WANT TO YOU

Taft appointed Mr. Moore minister to Liberia a few months before the end of his administration and Mr. Moore resigned when Woodrow Wilson took office, without ever leaving this country. The Age and the Moore family moved to Harlem in 1919 and here Mr. Moore continued his activity in politics. Although the Republican party is not the dominant political party in New York, Mr. Moore succeeded in being elected to the board of aldermen in 1927.
He has also been very active in civic and social affairs. He was instrumental in aiding the 369th infantry to get an armory costing over a million dollars and since he has been on the board of aldermen he has secured an appropriation of nearly half million dollars more for an administration building for Harlem's popular colored soldiers. He has also fought for the interest of Negro policemen and the colored employees under civil service, both local and national. Recently he was elected a member of the board of directors of the Dunbar National Bank, organized by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., in order to give Harlem a neighborhood bank.

I have been married for two years to a man 30 years older than myself. He gives me everything I want in the way of luxury, but I am not happy and I cannot make myself love him. And, worse yet, I have lately fallen in love with some one else. We meet at a friend's house and soon I know it will leak out and become gossip. Now, I hate to hurt my husband with any scandal, but seeing this young man occasionally is all that makes my life with my husband bearable. Would it be better to leave my husband and go home to my folks, or to stay on and run the risk of a scandal?—Worried Wife.
You better go right on home! It is better to leave now than when the scandal breaks. That is the safest thing for you and the most honorable way out of the situation. Both you and your husband made a mistake in marrying, but there is no use adding tragedy to thoughtlessness. If you can't love him now you certainly won't be able to when he gets older.

If he is a reasonable man you might even tell him that you found yourself attracted by others and that you left him because you did not wish to deceive him. That will prove to him that you are honorable and appeal to his sense of fair play.

vases except one which she painted a vivid purple. She made violet and purple and orange pillows for the lounge. She did not know what she would do for a picture because the modern originals are so expensive she could not afford one. One day she saw one of the modern fashion magazines on a news stand with a modernistic cover in exactly the colors of violet and green that matched her room. She bought the magazine and framed the cover in an old frame which she painted orange. That room is a dream now! It is vivid yet far more restful than when it was in dark colors. It is the correct setting for her fine brown skin and trim clothes. Yet it cost only twenty dollars to make it brilliant and distinguished.

FRIENDS AGAIN
During the weeks that followed,
Ruby came into the place often. She
kept coming until she and Hayes,
were child-like friends again—and
recklessly she spent her dimes. That
was her weakness—her thoughtless-
ness. Those dimes wero needed at:
home, but she seemed totally un-
aware of this when it came to par
taking of the wares of Hayes’ place.
Hayes would ring the dimes up on
the cash register, but always failed
‘to put them in the drawer. He must
find some way to give them back to
her.
One day as he was counting up the
money she had spent in the past
Weeks she came in for the usual sau-
‘cer of cream. He filled her order
end their usual conversation began.
“What are you doing, Douglas—
keeping a dime bank?” she laughed
when her eyes fell upon the pile of
nickels and dimes by the cash regis-
‘ter.
“Exactly, Ruby," he smiled; “but

“Nope.”
“Oh, yes you will. You've never

“Nor anyone else. I don't see why

A LONG DRIVE
Sunday came. Hayes was as good
as his word. In due time he drove
up‘to the Porter homestead and asked
Bruce Porter for Ruby. When asked
in, Hayes made it known that he
preferred to sit in the car and wait.
He had seen the girl peer cautiously
from one of the upper windows, but
whether she would go to Mount Nebo
with him he did not know.
After a little time his doubts were
dispersed, for she appeared, dressed
and smiling, on the dilapidated
porch.
“You would come, wouldn't you,
Doug?”
“As good as my word,” he boasted.
And they went to Mount Nebo.
He made the evening exceptionally

RUBY IS WORRIED
Then came one evening in the
early fall. She had been slightly {il.
Her sunshiny smile seemed clouded.
A troubled look had taken its place.
He had not taken her anywhere for
quite awhile, and she only went with
him on this occasion when he finally
had persuaded her that the air was
what she needed. They had motored
far into the adjoining county and
now he had stopped beside a placid

Oscar Charleston in centerfield while the other nine switched him to one of the other fields in order to give their favorite a rating!
While this selection was limited in representation to players in the then Eastern league, fans all over the country were eager to send in lists. Letters were postmarked from such distant points at Los Angeles, Sedalia and St. Louis. Obviously, this opinion came from a cross-section of fandom and I was privileged to believe that Charleston, then, was the unanimous choice of the boys for the country's greatest ball player.
For years my desk has been the goal for all-star selections and never a team comes in without Charleston's name on it.
NEAR PERFECT
Oscar Charleston is as near perfect as ballhawks come. He is a big man with a playing weight around 208 and his height extends towards the six-foot line. He is fast and he is tireless. He is intelligent and he is aggressive. His fielding is graceful and cannot be improved and his bat is a constant menace to all types of pitching. He is a batter without a weakness.
He may lunge at a floater for a third strike—with the bases empty; you'll serve him the same pitch with some runners on and he'll knock out of the park. He may fan weakly on an inside ball and the next time tear the first baseman's feet from under him with the force of the drive. Baseball knows no more timely hitter for he gets his devastating blasts in when they do the

Quick-because St. Joseph's Prescription C-2223 is correct in principle. It attacks rheumatism at its source.
Instead of going about it in a "hit or miss" manner, C-2223 gets right to the bottom of the trouble by cleansing the system of acid poisons and accumulated waste matter. This tends to reduce the swelling and relieve inflammation and pain.
St. Joseph's Prescription C-2223 is indicated for the treatment of sub-acute and chronic rheumatic aches and pains of the joints and muscles, gout and neuralgia. It is easy and pleasant to take and the results are usually quick and lasting. Try it today!

In the four games Charleston made six hits which included two homers and two triples. Each of those hits came with men on bases and each played a vital part in the three victories for Clan Darbie.
With two on and two down and the tally 3-1, Bacharachs, in the ninth inning, Charleston hit a homer to beat Ping Gardner who had yielded but two hits until them. Similar hits have wrecked many another team through the years. The Frank Merriwell of my youth lives again in the Hoosier Hustler.

DO THIS TONIGHT BEFORE RETIRING
Make a thick lather of GOLDEN BROWN BEAUTY SOAP and rub well into the face and neck. Then take a hot cloth and steam the face for a minute or two. Then dry and gently massage a small amount of GOLDEN BROWN BEAUTY OINTMENT well into the skin, and leave on overnight.
In the morning, make a thick, fluffy lather of GOLDEN BROWN SOAP and wash the face, neck and hair. Then dry face, neck and hair with a Turkish towel and put a small quantity of GOLDEN BROWN HAIR DRESSING in palm of hand and slick over hair. Then arrange the hair any way you want—it will be soft and pliable.
Finish up by dabbing a little GOLDEN BROWN ROUGE on each cheek and put on a light layer of GOLDEN BROWN FACE POWDER. Made in white, flesh; high brown, extra high brown (true Creole shades). You won't even recognize yourself. Remember, we don't want to be white—we want to be light, bright and attractive. Don't be fooled any longer—don't accept any substitutes for GOLDEN BROWN—there are none.
outset it seemed as if he were doomed to disappointment. It was impossible to secure rooms for a studio, but Upshure met this difficulty in the same wav that he had met others. He became a janitor of one of the apartment houses there, thus securing his room rent free. The studio was established, and now the trip to Europe is almost realized. This summer Luke Theodore Upshure will leave the city of his hard struggles and study his beloved music at the home of the old masters.
One would naturally expect that discouragement and bitter disappointments would leave their mark on Mr. Upshure. If he were cold and taciturn it would only be the logical result of his experiences. On the contrary this has not been the case. His soul has not become warped; rather it has mellowed as he gains a deeper insight into the meaning of life. Forgetting the limitations of his body, he has devoted himself to the pleasures of the mind and the spirit. His studio is filled with books, paintings and sculpture. Of in one corner of the living room stands his piano, the most prized of his possessions. When he plays his entire being becomes lost in the music. With the appreciative touch of the true artist, he lets his fingers wander over the keys, varying the theme to suit his moods. Some of Upshure's own compositions are sa-

PLANS TO RETIRE
THE MUSICIAN
NOBLE SISSLE, one of the creators and stars of the never-to-be-forgotten "Shuffle Along," "Chocolate Dandies" and other pioneer Negro stage successes, who returned from Europe on the Berengaria, on March 8th, has thrown a bombshell into the amusement business by announcing that at the conclusion of his forthcoming engagements, which take him back to Europe about the first of May, he will retire from active stage work.
In speaking of his just completed European tour, Mr. Sissle confided that it had been the most profitable and pleasant one in his career, and that in the short space of 13 months he has become one of the biggest box office attractions in England, and incidentally the highest paid single colored artist to ever appear in that country.
PLAYED AT PARIS CABARET
"It is an interesting cycle of events that prompts me to announce that I am retiring from the stage," said Mr. Sissle, in his usual serious manner.
"I was engaged during the months of July and August last year to furnish and conduct a band at the Cafe Des Ambassadeurs in Paris and

Their comments were all encouraging, and after hearing my orchestra, which was one of the sensations of Paris, a treat many of them asked me why it was that no Negro had come forward to take the place of "Jim" Europe as a leader, organizer and promoter of dance orchestras. Irene Castle McLaughlin, for instance, said to me one night: Noble, your band, with you conducting, reminds me of 1913. and the time when "Jim" Europe, Vernon Castle and myself first became famous. There has been no outstanding figure in the field of Negro music since Mr. Europe's tragic death, and since Vernon Castle and I always considered "Jim" one of the partners in business, I feel privileged to c nfer his crown upon you.'

Luke Theodore Upshure has achieved success and his friends are many. Newspapers send their reporters to interview him, famous writers inscribe their good wishes in his book; Von Rucktesdell, the German artist, has done his portrait in crayon, and Arthur Lee, the sculptor, has modeled a bust of him in bronze. A copy of this bronze is to be placed in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts. But he has not lost sight of his ambition—the long-wished-for trip to Europe is just in the offing. M
forts. Negro life has shown itself rich with color, wit, pathos, happiness and promise. All of these and many other phases of Negro life have been touched up within the last decade. "Nigger Heaven" apparently began the series of diversified literature on Negroes, their life and their problems. In the wake of this book has followed such works as "The White Girl" by Vera Caspary, "Scarlet Sister Mary" by Julia Peterkin and other novels of merit on the colorful and interesting Negro race. It is always interesting to view the recorded opinions of white authors on the Negro and his problems. Indeed, the Negro does even more: he views the average production of white authors with askance, for fear that these detached authors tend to view Negro life with a minimum of sympathy and understanding. Yet he realizes that it is not entirely the fault of these writers — many of

ANY of his men deserted. Terrorist, but the enemy
ANY of his men deserted Toussaint, but the remainder, under Dessalines and Christophe remained faithful and were not discouraged.
This is the conclusion of the first chapter of one of the most magnificent and interesting auto-biographies received by this department.
Here is a book that clutches the reader's interest from beginning to end. It tells of the adventurous life of a courageous descendant of a long line of African kings. Some of his adventures among barbarous peoples are so gripping and startling that the reader finds himself almost in the midst of the real situation. Striking and even gruesome incidents are related of how the author attempted to build a Black empire in certain portions of Africa.
Captain Dean tells of his wanderings in the utmost corners of the earth. His schooner, the Pedro Gorino, sailed up and down the African coasts trafficking and trading in gold, diamonds and other precious commodities.
The Pedro Gorino is one of the few books of excellence published in modern times. It compares favorably with "Trader Horn" or any other book of its kind. Indeed, its style, to this writer, is much more elegant and magically entrancing than that of the memorable Trader Horn. Captain Dean gathers from his experiences a philosophy and erudition that he makes evident in the delightful narration of his book.
This is a narrative that no Negro can afford to miss. It is instructive and contains much material on historically important questions which makes it a book well worth reading.
whom are brilliant and sincere in their efforts—but must be partially attributable to the fact that the most thorough analysis of Negro life can come only through constant and sympathetic association with Negro people. It is certainly not difficult to understand why the Negro has formed the favorite subject matter for modern authors, both black and white. A best-seller pours generous sums into the coffers of the material minded pen-pushers. And Negro life provides just enough truthful thrills to inspire the highly active imagination to its greatest exaggerations.
We hope that this lengthy introduction will provide a background for criticism of what we consider one of the most accurate pictures of Negro life in America written in the last half century. This book is written in cold merciless description of the American Negro's status. No facts are hidden from the reader. The truth about the Negro's economic conditions, his social problems, is unsparingly and unflinchingly told in a manner that convinces even the most prejudiced mind. For throughout the pages of this volume clear unequivocal statements are reinforced by graphic illustrations and indisputable figures, tabulations and statistics.

UNDISCOVERED AUSTRALIA. By Captain Sir G. H. Wilkins, M. C., with 47 illustrations and a map, 347 pp. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York. This is a graphic illustrated description of several places in Australia which had not been visited by any exploring expedition before. It is interesting to read of the various customs of tribes of natives who had never before seen any evidences of modern civilization. Their quaint and almost inconceivable habits are flabbergasting to the reader who thinks in no other terms except
Negro to America is followed by a series of brief chapters dealing with every aspect of Black America's life. In Part I the following topics, among others, are treated: "Labor shortage and 4,500,000 Negroes in 1863." In Part II the following chapters explain themselves: "The Black Belt," "Land Ownership," Wages and Income," "Centers of Economic Power" and "Living Conditions." All of these chapters are scientifically discussed and yet they are well within the grasp of all classes of readers. The remaining parts and chapters leave no part of the current problems of Black America untouched.
It seems that it has remained for Mr. Nearing to produce a book which is for the most part entirely free of bias and propaganda. Mr. Nearing undoubtedly recognizes that the facts laid out fairly and frankly speak more loudly than the most impassioned propaganda.
The style of this book reveals a mastery over details and a capacity for an unimpassioned treatment of a situation which would reduce the most self-controlled to violent passions and opinions. For Mr. Nearing's calm yet amazing revelations he is to be highly commended.
Added value is given to Black America through its rare collection of 159 pictures of Negro life. The

Mr. Wilkins tells of thrilling nights spent in fear of cannibalistic natives. He tells of the almost human intelligence of several species of animals found in the Australian forests. He describes with interesting illustrations the interesting aborigines.
To one who has a desire for traveling, this book will serve as a very good substitute for a hazardous trip across the seas. It is fascinatingly and simply written. Besides the interest it inspires, it affords information which makes it valuable as a source book.
Dr. James McCune Smith, a distinguished student of medicine, graduated from the University of Glasgow and was for years a practitioner in the city of New York. He was one of the first northern free Negroes to attain national prominence.
Negro is pictured at work, at play, laughing and crying. Some of these photographs often make the reader shudder not only at the photographs themselves, but at the tremendous risk that must have been assumed in making them. The photographs alone give this book an ascendancy over other contemporary efforts of this sort.
For many years a book of this kind has been both desired and needed by those who wished an authentic account of Black America.: There is an excellent bibliography contained in this volume besides its additional value as a source book of first-rate quality.
In a word, here is Negro America, true Negro America. As there is a "Song of Songs" in its field, here is a "book of books." It behooves every Negro to read this book.
Black America should prove keenly interesting for all those who are sincerely desirous of knowing the truth about the 15 millions of people who comprise Black America.

Goodbye, Fear!
DON'T BE AFRAID. By Joseph Lobel. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York. 233 p. p. Do you understand yourself and your moods? Do you have fears, that though hidden, often penetrate to the surface of your mind causing discomfort and unnecessary anxiety? Are you often gloomy and do not know why? Have you a number of medical notions and superstitions that cause worry? All these questions and more are intelligently and scientifically discussed in Dr. Lobel's new book. The solutions offered are scientific, clear and helpful.
A key-note of optimism runs throughout the book. It very well deserves its name of "gloom-chaser" which it does, never departing from a scientific analysis of problems treated.
This is an excellent hand book for those who like to keep themselves well-in-hand as well as well-informed.

No. 10 — A PROBLEM IN LOVE
By M. N. BUNKER, D. C. S.
HERE is a letter that you will find interesting. It may be that this girl's story is not like your own, but if you have a problem about love and happiness you can be satisfied that your handwriting will help you understand it. Read this letter very, very carefully:
"I'm hoping that you can help me. I am a girl who has never had a lover. I go with a boy a few times, and then he quits. I am past twenty and have a good high school education. I dress well and make a fair salary, and while I meet people, the boys have not seemed to care for me.

DEAR SIR: I am a young girl, 16 years old and, of course, am in love. For several nights I have been dreaming about the mother of my sweetheart. The last time I dreamed of her I thought she danced for me and showed me an imaginary line that divided her physical body from that of her religious body. Then that picture faded away. The next event that happened was that my pastor, with lots of other preachers, was telling the people of various insurrections that had happened between other pastors and their congregation.
Now I would thank you very much if you would interpret these dreams for me. Oh, yes, I was about to forget that this lady told me that she was serving God and Mammon (in the dream).

little home of our own; but my mother discourages it and says that the only reason Jack comes to see me is that he wants a girl—but that he does not love me. Can you tell me, from my handwriting, why I have not had men friends, and if Jack truly loves me? Oh, I hope that he does!—Maryan W., Ala."
THE MAN'S HANDWRITING
Your writing, Maryan, shows a cool, very reserved nature, that may make friends, but will not attract very many. You are too reserved, too cool and do not show the warmth of friendship that attracts men, or women either. Your friend's writing is that of a man who loves intensely. This does not mean that he will love you alone, or that he is truthful when he says that he does. But there are other things in his writing that show that he is true and honest. There is no reason why he should not love you, and if you truly love him, then you can be happy in a home of your own. I cannot tell you here what chances Jack has for promotion, but though there are many things in each nature that will need to be understood by you both, I am sure your mother is mistaken this time. Best wishes.

Why Oscar Charleston Is Greatest Ball Player Noble Sissle
(Continued from Page 8) of any players who ever lived. Never was there such an instructor as the lamented Taylor and dozens of stars owe their success to his wise teachings. Of him I'll write at another time.
In 1919 Oscar was with the American Giants in Chicago, where he learned much from that other specialist of the diamond, Rube Foster. Another year with the A. B. C.s and then a season with the St. Louis Giants. Home again in 1922 and 1923.
Money began to talk in eastern baseball circles and its call was heard in the west, in 1924 by Charleston, who came to Colonel Strothers' Harrisburg Giants, with which club he stayed for four seasons. During three of those years he was manager of the club and he had the most colorful organization along the seaboard. They never won a pennant but they never stopped threatening—and how!
MAKES RECORD RUN
It was in Harrisburg that Oscar made the longest home run of his record—a drive which traveled 465 feet before it touched earth again. The distance was measured and certified to by Wellington Jones, of the Harrisburg Telegraph. And the way the fans cheered!
When Strothers decided that he had had enough of baseball and that henceforth he would devote his time to his billiard hall and his dancing, a merry battle ensued for the services of Charleston and the other Senators. The Big "Fellah" finally
chose Hildale as his abiding place and here he is now making whoopee. At the close of the 1928 season he was chosen as field leader by the Hilldale Corporation. While Charleston started out as a pitcher he was soon moved to the outfield, where he could give the clubs the daily advantage of his terrific hitting. Bam! Charleston again—as the fans say. Each fall he goes to Cuba and is the most popular American player who visits the island. The natives cannot understand why anything should be allowed to keep such a maestro out of the big leagues. Once a Havana sports writer used more than two columns in a worthy eulogy of this western speedboy.
I have lamped major league baseball for more than a score of years, years through which have paraded Clarke, Jones, Murray, Paskert, Felsch, Speaker, Cobb, Hooper, Lewis, Wilson and the stars of now. With the eyes of a critic I describe our hero thus: A base stealer like Carey, a slugger like Ruth, a fielder like Speaker, a thrower like Wilson, an eye like Sheckard, a brain like Clarke, a personality like Donlin. What more could you want in one athlete?
(Don't miss the next article on great Negro athletes!)

Retires from Stage
(Continued from Page 10) clusion of the season at the Ambassadeurs, in order to finish out certain contracts which I had to play in England, I continued to keep that thought in mind, and now that I have just signed contracts with Mr. Edmund Sayag, the manager of the Cafe Des Ambassadeurs, for the coming season, to again present my band, I have determined to definitely give up active stage work in favor
of the orchestra business." Mr. Sissle laments the fact that the Negro musicians, except in remote instances, are not holding their rightful place in the music business, and have not taken advantage of the style of playing which the Negro originated; neither have they profited by the work that rightfully belongs to the Negro musician, by reason of his having created what is popularly known as "jazz music." Mr. Sissl is hopeful, however, and feels that with proper organization the Negro musicians will again come into their own.
Mr. Sissle particularly asked me to say that despite the time he has spent in England, he has not developed an English accept, still wears the same sized hat and would be pleased to hear from his man friends.
The total estimate of Negro union membership for the United State is 100,000.
There are 900,652 Negroes in the state of Alabama.

HROUGH the inky night, with a diamond-studded sky above, a taxicab sped toward Tremont street. The sweet young thing relaxed. Her velvet-brown skin was roughed . . . the full lips tinted. The black seal coat, trimmed with leopard, was opened at the neck to reveal a string of real pearls, linked twice about a swan-shaped neck. Helen Stone leaned against the upholstery. She was playing the leading role in "Lone Sorcerer" at a downtown Boston theater. They called her "red hot mamma," and she lived up to the name.
"The way that baby sings the blues is just too bad," commented the man with the bald spot and a few strands of hair brushed over the vacant space. He set always in the first row. He threw her a kiss and said: "She's some baby, and I don't mean maybe."
That night Helen received a note during her performance. It was from Lester Wayland. She reviewed its contents in her mind now:
"Dearest Helen: Come to my house tonight. Adelkide is away for a few days. This is a wonderful opportu-

nity to be alone . . . just you and me. I shall expect you when the show is over. Yours always—Les."
Helen smiled a dreary, mirthless smile. She remembered how she had debated with herself whether she should take the chance in going to his house. She remembered that she had shrugged her shoulders and thought that she was capable of taking care of herself. She could master all situations. She still remembered her early training, and basically she was still a good girl.
She smoothed the soft, glossy fur on her coat—Lester's first present—and some people would call this terrible, but she had done no wrong.
The taxicab stopped at a fashionable house in the best section of Roxbury.
Flashing on a light, the taxicab driver opened the door for the girl, at the same time eyeing her and thinking:
"That chicken is dressed right out of this world--and how!"
Helen hastened up the stone steps and rang the bell.
Lester greeted her with a kiss.
"Welcome to your future home, honey."
"But you're still living with your wife," Helen reminded him.
"Ah, that's all arranged . . . going to see my lawyer tomorrow about my
All she had done was to make promises—promises that she never expected to carry out.
"How foolish men are! They are so easily fooled. If he had an ounce of gray matter he'd keep the woman he's got. He's at least sure of her.
"Just shows what poor logic men employ.
"He's too blind to see that I want him only for his presents? . . ."
Didn't he have the largest clientele in this city?
He probably fell for her because he was bored with the monotonous lite Adelalde offered him.

before, Les."
"Well, a man has to be careful.
First time we've had a chance to be alone, you know."
She sat on the divan beneath the soft light of the floor lamp, watching him with bright eyes. . .
They were tantalizing.
She neither smiled nor frowned, nor did she seem the least perturbed. Her bright eyes continually strayed

Lester took her into the library.
"Just make yourself comfortable . . . and to home."
He led her through the dimly lighted living room. She threw a quick glance about, noting the mahogany grand piano, as well as the softness of the oriental rug she was walking on. They sat on the luxurius divan in the library.
He moved his foot and inched nearer Helen. His arm encircled her slender waist. "Baby . . . I knew you'd come." "Why, you never called me 'Baby'

to a decanter and glasses which Lester had placed on the table at the end of the divan.
He laughed and reached over for the decanter.
He handed her a glass of the dark red liquid, and poured another for himself.
He proposed a toast:
"Here's to the future Mrs. Wayland. May she always be happy."
"Here's hoping for the best," responded Heaven.
They drank.
The girl's soft body, with its faint perfume, intoxicated him.
"Oh, Baby!"
His voice was hoarse.
Helen was cold and unresponsive.
She turned her slender brown hand this way and that and studied the brilliant diamond sparkling on the third finger.
She calculated its worth.
His lovemaking bored her.
However, to be half-way congenial, she rested her marcelled bob on his arm.
"I love you," he said.
Her gaze faltered and wavered, but his emotions were chaotie.
"Helen . . ."
There was a disconcerting sound of tiny feet and a prattling child's voice.
"Daddy, I . . . I waked up. I got scared, daddy."
"Just my back!"
Helen looked surpised but relieved. . .
"Didn't know you had a kid, Les."
Lester took Junior in his arms.
An awkward silence enveloped the room.
"Daddy, who's the pretty lady?"
Helen laughed in her confusion.
Lester was still angry. He stood staring apologetically upon her; made a half-hearted effort to stop her, as, moving languidly, she rose from the divan.
"Daddy, who's the pretty . . . ?"
Helen gathered her coat, gloves and hat. . .
"Les with a kid! . . . If Les is a fool, I'm not! Believe me, I did not want him anyway, and I certainly wouldn't tie myself down to mothering somebody else's kid."
She saw one was through with Les, and she had sense enough to see that it was for the best.
Her eyes darkened. . . . She thought of Jimmy, her old sweetheart. She looked into her purse. . . . She found two nickels.
She considered. The fare on the street car was ten cents.
Must she ride home on the car . . . or must she take one nickel to call Jimmy on the telephone to ask him for his forgiveness? She had denied him every privilege of calling.
She sighed and hummed one of the song hits of the show, and walked cut into the night.

(Continued from Page 2) Seeing that the black men were the soul of the revolution, one of Butcher Weyler's first acts, was to try to pacify them by offering them equality and high posts in the government, but they scorned his proposals. MACFO'S LAST EXPLOIT
Maceo's goal was Havana. But the road to the capital was blocked by Weyler's most formidable trocha. Crossing this, however, Maceo decided to dash on to the capital. He had only 500 horsemen, while the Spaniards numbered tens of thousands.
But Maceo was accustomed to that. At all times the Spaniards had vastly outnumbered the Cuban heroes.
But, alas, this was to be Maceo's last exploit. The spies of Spain had been busy and the news of his crossing the trocha had been carried to Weyler. Worse, there was a traitor in his own ranks. This is said to be none other than his surgeon, Dr. Zertuchas.
On the night of Dec. 4, 1896, leaving his little army behind, Maceo set out with 17 of his officers to study the lay of the land. Among them was Dr. Zertuchas.
BETRAYED BY FRIEND
Suddenly as they rode cautiously along a hell of fire burst on them. With a score of bullets in his body the gallant Maceo fell mortally wounded, while the remaining 15 of his men fell dead and dying around him.
As to Dr. Zertuchas when next heard of he was safe in the Spanish lines. Nearing the ambush he had swerved his horse aside and escaped.
At the noise of the firing Maceo's men rushed to the rescue and though outnumbered beat off the Spaniards and recovered the body of their chief.
News of his death was telegraphed to Spain, and the Spaniards celebrated his fall with special rejoicing. Thereafter the revolt lagged, and America was finally forced to intervene. Dr. Willard Shaw, correspondent of the New York World, wrote: "The town is filled with Spanish soldiers. They have nothing to do since the death of Maceo."
AWARDS PALM TO MACEO Chas. E. Chapman in his "History of the Cuban Republic," says, in awarding the palm to Maceo: "Gomez showed great military abilities in his conduct of affairs but the skill and courage of Maceo were so astonishingly great as to capture the attention of the entire world. He seemed to range at will between the

provinces of Havana and Pinar del Rio, breaking into one or another of the trochas despite the Spanish armies.
"His once great prestige lost, Marshal Campos was recalled to Spain, but Cuban victories, especially of the spectacular Maceo, continued to be the order of the day. In December, however, the great rulatto leader was killed in battle, and from that time forward the balance began to swing toward Spain."
GREAT PATRIOT
Lucciardi, Chancellor of France, in his "Life of Maceo," declares that while he does not wish "to discredit the bravery" of Gen. Gomez, yet "Maceo merited the title of general-in-chief as a right because he was the soul of the revolution."
"Of all its heroes," he says, "none can be compared with him. He consecrated his life to the triumph of the idea of independence, and he fell gloriously—a victim of ardent patriotism. Maceo knew how to die as did the heroes of old."
An editor who knew Maceo well gives the following description of him: "He was always of the sunniest disposition, closely attaching all people to him—a man of the strictest moral integrity; he never drank wine, he never smoked, and that in a land of tobacco is as common as potatoes in Ireland—and he

AN EASTERN rubber manufacturing company was recently reported to be successfully following the policy of allowing all salesmen to fix their own salaries. New salesmen are employed at the salary they name with the understanding that if they do not prove themselves worth the figure they name, they are to resign. Whenever they think they are worth more or less, they are to make recommendations in accordance with their thoughts. If they request a raise, they are to prove themselves worth it or be automatically discharged. Every salesman knows the salary of every other salesman, employee or officer of the company. A difference of about 33% per cent is reported to exist between the highest and the lowest salaries paid salesmen on their own valuation.

"Did you ever love any man?"
Her dreaming, troubled eyes searched his face before she answered.
"Yes, when I was quite a child," she replied, "and it wasn't puppy love, either."
"How dou know that it wasn't?"
"Because."
"Because what? A woman always answers 'because,' but she never knows what the cause is."
"Because it still exists."
"And do I know him?" he quizzed on.
"You should," and a warm smile slowly lit on her lovely, brown face. She did not smile at Hayes, but at the almost forgotten past.
HAYES IS THOUGHTFUL
Hayes gazed thoughtfully at the twilight beauty of the pond, shot here and there with the golden light of a fading sun. It was enchanting. Did Ruby see it? He turned to her. She was like the enchanting pond. She seemed a part of it. Her dark face was like the shadows. Her teeth were white like the lilies. Those lovely eyes were like the still dark waters. Her smile was like the flitting sunlight.
The young man drank in her charm while his thoughts went back to his childhood. Had he ever been the victim of childhood love? Yes, and it was then that the girl sitting in the car with him had told him that she loved him. Was he the man she mentioned a few minutes ago? He had been her only childhood sweetheart, he was certain. Something burst forth and burned within the young man. So wrapt in thought was the girl that she did not notice that his arm slipped about her. Not until he drew her tenderly, passionately to him did she arouse from her reverie.
"Oh, Douglas, what——!" was her surprised protest.
"I love you, Ruby, dearest. Don't you re——"
"No, no. Don't!" She tried pulling away from him, then suddenly, ceased to protest. He drew her closer, whispering passionately to her.
They drove home under star-lit skies. And the star-bedecked night, too, was like Ruby. Lovely things; the lily-spangled pond, the star-studded sky and Ruby; and all three were God's handiwork.
Three months later found the nest well feathered. The little bungalow on Church street no longer sheltered a sole occupant, but two instead. Douglas Hayes and his bride, Ruby, were happy. They had been quietly married three days after they had sat in his car parked beside their fairyland-like pond. Afterward, Hayes bought the Porter homestead and had Mrs. Porter sent away for treatment under the best available physicians. Now that lady had returned and was fast on the way to recovery.
During those three months, Hayes all but walked in air. He owned a good business and a cozy home. Above all, his childhood sweetheart was his wife. Blessed with good health, Hayes was happy.
And was Ruby Hayes happy?
Yes. She had been happy from the moment he declared that he loved her.
"Happy, dearest?" he asked over the noonday meal. He had noticed a dejected look in his wife's eyes.
"Yes, you dear boy, very happy."
"But, girlie, you do look a little tired or something. You'd better let me hire some one to help you out. You're the mistress of this nest—not its slave."
"Dear, we have the laundry out and you're paying Mrs. Briggs to help out with the weekly cleaning. That's enough. Don't you want me to do anything? If I don't have something to do, I'll get fat and you

"But I'm going to take you for a drive this evening. You look jaded."
"Oh, I'm all right," she declared, then added, "and I don't want to take you away from your business. I'll drive myself if you insist on me going. I'll stop by and get you before supper-time."
After dinner Hayes prepared to go back to business. His wife follow- ed him to the door.

"Honey, dinner was fine," he said, kissing her. "You're a wonderful little cook and—something is worrying you, honey. Tell me what it is." DISTURBING THOUGHTS "Douglas, I shouldn't bother you, but-er-I——" She looked up at him. "Something seems to be-er-haunting me." "Haunting you?" he frowned. "I-I-Douglas——" "Withers? No!" "I-Yes!" "He's dead." "I know, but I—he seems to be watching me." "Honey, that's all nonsense, You take a drive and try to forget it," he said, sternly.
"I'll try, Doug," she promised.
He kissed her again and left the house in a none too settled mood.
The little shop was filled with customers that afternoon and they were giving Hayes and his clerk a busy time. During the height of the rush, a car—Hayes' own car drove up to the curb in front of the saloon and Ruby scurried into the place like a frightened bird.
She paid attention to no one and took a seat in the far end of the place. To those who spoke to her, she returned their greeting fitfully unconcerned. Hayes had noticed all this, but was too busy behind the counter to give her any attention.
She sat in a dazed mood, staring into nothingness. Whenever the screen door would slam, she would start and glance that way, seemingly half expectant.
Hayes found time to glance at his watch. It was past six. She was late in coming for him. Something was wrong.
After a little the rush subsided and Hayes changed his coat, donned his hat and came over to her.
"Honey, I'm ready," he informed her. "Enjoy yourself?"
"Yes, I'm ready," she said, rising, but not looking at him.
A REVELATION
They drove home in silence. Once inside the little bungalow she sank into a dining room chair in a completely exhausted abstracted fashion. Hayes reminded her of supper and, in a puzzled frame of mind, he assisted her in preparing the meal.
She did not eat, but sat at the table in the same abstracted, blank mood. At last Hayes could endure it no longer. He laid his fork aside.
"Not eating, sweetie? Come, tell me about it," he coaxed kindly.
She made no reply—did not even look at him and she seemed on the verge of tears. He waited. At last she spoke.
"Douglas, I felt it all along. I just felt it would happen."
"What would happen, Ruby?"
What would happen, Ruby:
"Marcus—I saw Marcus and he has threatened me."

The psychology of this is that he is constantly improving and thus meriting a salary increase. It is hard to tell whether or not these employees are average. Anyway, their behavior under such an unusual business policy has been very favorable.
Placing all this responsibility on a salesman's shoulders apparently makes him not only more conservative, but actually increases his efficiency and ambition. A salesman is not likely to ask for an increase in salary if he realizes that he is to give adequate and convincing proof of his ability to maintain such a raise. Moreover, he is not likely to ask for a raise until he can show in tangible results his increased value to the firm. Then the knowledge that he will receive the raise for the asking increases the sensitiveness to fair play and open handedness between employee and employer.
The abolition of secretness in the matter of salaries of fellow employees and officers would seem to eradicate the undercurrent of jealousies and envies usually prevalent among officers and employees. This is indeed an interesting experiment in the business world and no doubt it will be followed by many firms throughout the country. The theory that human nature is at all times fundamentally selfish finds an apparently interesting antagonist here. These salesmen have shown themselves very modest individuals.
The Negro race decreased its illiteracy of persons over 10 years of age from 79.9 per cent in 1870 to 22.9 per cent in 1920.
