The reactions of the race to this epic of reconstruction days will be varied, but it must be admitted that it is a true portrayal of that time. It cannot be called a drama, because of its insufficient plot. But it is an epic of Negro life and should be regarded as such. It has been called by critics "The Plantation Opera" and is considered in picture circles the most important gesture the industry has made in years. Clarence Muse, the Nappus of the story, is a veteran stage artist, and will tell in his own words the story of his earlier achievements and his future hopes: Early Ambition to Be a Lawyer "I was born in Baltimore. I received my earlier educational training there. After completing high school, I entered the Dickerson School of Law in Carlisle, Penn., and later took a post graduate course in law at the University of Pennsylvania. "My early ambition was to be a lawyer—a Blackstone or a Webster winning out over my opponents by oratory and legal knowledge." Muse is a Phi Beta Sigma man of the Alpha Chapter, Washington, D.C. "My earlier dreams of wealth and prominence, through my law career, I abandoned, and took up singing. I knew that a Negro would have a fairer field in this line of endeavor. The public believed in the Negro's voice; whereas, at that time, it did not think of him as a possessor of high intelligence. He has committed to memory a different play each week for twenty-six consecutive weeks. Was a Member of One of the Country's Finest Quartets the Country's "I became a member of a quartet known as 'The Royal Poinciana Four.' Our quartet entertained at Palm Beach for many of the country's wealthiest people. After this engagement, I joined a colored stock dramatic company and toured the South. Eventually I found myself in vaudeville, billed under the act of 'The Muses,' then later, 'Chappelle and Muse.'" Press Loud in Praise of Muse's Ability Muse claims no credit for any of his work. His many scrapbooks are filled from cover to cover with press reports speaking in a superlative way of his ability as an actor, producer and dramatist. "I abandoned vaudeville," he continued, "to become a theatre manager in Kansas City, but after a short while the lure of the stage intrigued me again, so I want to New York and joined the notable Lafayette Players." I took a half step toward the door, faltered and then—a quiver as of some huge body tightening its coils about that room of death seemed to shiver through the whole place. The very excess of menace in that sinister quaking brought some age-old quality to the surface of my con- sciousness. It was perhaps the same desperate reaction that my troglodyte ancestor experienced when he felt the breath of some huge reptilian enemy of prehistoric times, upon his neck—a reaction that sent him whirling with upraised bludgeon of iron- hard wood to send it crashing against the soft snout or or crushingly erunching against the vital but brittle neck vertebrae, in a winning fight for his life, and the life of his mate and his young. Not unlike him I whirled and stiffened for the attack but there was nothing to at- tack. The quaking ceased; an ominous pall of stillness descended abruptly over the place. Alec, save for the first startled flight urge, had steod still. I’ve heard of laughing hyenas, but the laughing reptile has yet to be matched in the natural history catalogue.” Whatever I felt or thought, my voice could still simulate a facetiously humorous mood. The daring impudence of it seemed to touch some chord of like feeling in Alec. He gave his shoulders a restless shrug and something of the stark fear faded from his eyes and his face. “Well, at least we'll give him a run for his money, old dear. I’m with you there.” Alee advanced a step into the room and picked up the wrought iron footstool by the bed side. He only smiled—a grim sort of humor in his face—as he did so. He crossed his legs, reached for a cigarette, lit it, and be- gan puffing. I followed suit; but I turned my back on the thing on the bed that had been the arrogant woman detective, Alene Hardmore. Outside we could hear the swish of the great tree branches in the wind. Now and then an owl would hoot or we would hear the far- away honking of an automo- bile horn on the highway that skirted the outer rim of the parklike grounds of Sel- wyn House. The room, save for our occasional forced re- marks to break the eerie spell, that in spite of our at- tempts to ignore it, bore down upon us, was silent and heavy with mysterious fore- bodings. I had just flung my second cigarette butt upon the floor and stamped the glowing ashes out with the toe of my shoe when we heard the far- away thud of the closing front door. It was followed by the confused clumping of footsteps on the stairs, Alec and I looked at each other but neither of us mov- ed. We both remembered— Alec, the experience, andI the report of it—of those other two missing bodies. This time there would be no mis- sing corpus delicti; that, I was determined upon. Slow- ly and steadly the footsteps drew nearer. We could hear the confused murmur of voices. Old Diaron was speaking. They drew nearer. “And the Bon Dieu knows whether they be living or dead with that awful horror stalking these walls—” Diaron’s ash-gray black face appeared at the opening of the narrow passageway. Behind him were the greup- ed faces of several persons. I recognized the marshal, old Jake Kelner was one of my best friends from childhood. He grinned over the heads of the others when he saw me. I nodded back at him. They came pushing toward where Alec still remained seated on his stool in the open doorway as though he had no intention of being fooled into abandoning his post by anything short of death or superior force. Alec still was mindful of those disappearances. But Alene Hardmore’s body did not move. It lay motionless and hideous in its mutilation, where, and as, we had first seen it. The flickering candlelight sent the shadows scut- tering and slithering across it like the dancing shadows of death sprites in a dim world between the worlds. At length they were all in the room.
