Cases which have baffled the cleverest of police departments. These are highly interesting and offer an opportunity for the reader's imagination to be used in formulating probable solutions of these cases. THE story of Mary Vivian Barlowe and her tragic assassination in 1910 properly commences in the first part of 1889—a story that weaves itself into a tapestry of mystery. On January 10, 1889, John and Mary Barlowe, just married, were preparing to settle down in their modest little home in Aberdeen, N.C. To this union, a year later, was born one child—Mary Vivian Barlowe. It seems that this little girl brought an atmosphere into the Barlowe home that held its parents together for about five years. Af that, things changed. The image provided is too low resolution to accurately recognize any text. It appears to be a grayscale photograph of a brick wall with a window. 17 10 The house where the Barlowes lived --- Six years of married life made of John Barlowe, a very discontented husband. This spirit he injected into his home. He drank heavily and became a near brute. Finally, in a fit of raging anger, the man stuffed some things into a suitcase, cursed his wife and child, and disappeared. He has never been heard from since. Little Mary Vivian was five years old then; she couldn't understand, but her mother suffered a spiritual death. Under the burden of this disappointment, Mrs. Barlowe finally lasped into a bitterness that resulted in a lowering of her morals; a bitterness that led her to leave Aberdeen and seek solace in the bizarre life and companionships that probably hastened her death in 1907. She leaves our story in Hamlet, N.C. Mary Vivian was around seventeen years of age then, presumably a comely little person; but her bitter-hearted mother had been too busy seeking forgetfulness to properly prepare her for the life she THE STREETS OF BROOKLYN --- Washington Tribune ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION August 31, 1929 had to face. Mary had seen too much of her mother's life. So there was left upon an already burdened society, a young woman with an abnormal knowledge and a feeling of complete independence. Already she was a grown woman in her mind. Little is accurately known of Mary's life during the seven or eight months after her mother's death; but it is known that she arrived in Norfolk, Va., early in 1908—with a man, who came to be known as Mary's husband, Jim Barlowe. It might be well to remember that he was using her last name. Once settled in the two rooms on the second floor of No. 10 Hall street, they drew about them a host of friends and enjoyed themselves thoroughly, the man having found employment at the Norfolk and Western depot. Before many weeks, Mary found employment with a wealthy family on Freemason street. She was a little over eighteen years old then, apparently contented with the man with whom she lived, but just a bit "good timey." She liked her parties, her toddies, and so on. She was a live-wire. The family for which Mary worked employed also a house man, a young man of good reputation and standing. He was Robert Mosely. He was not married, and from the minute his eyes fell on Mary Barlowe, it is natural to imagine, he thanked his God that he wasn't. Robert Mosely fell hopelessly in love with Mary. He was quiet about it at first, but before many weeks he succeeded in getting his case over to the girl and from all appearances they both fell into a made love affair. This intense relationship, if it can be termed such, developed and grew into a romance that became for both of them, a wild infatuation, which, as the months went on, became bolder and more defiant. We will not be far off the mark if we consider this the one and only soul affair of Mary's life. It was genuine. It was kept secret for nearly two years. Jim Barlowe, the supposed husband, did not get wind of what was going on until one night in January, 1910. For some reason, he took it into his head to meet Mary when she got off from work and accompany her home. He left Hall street, reached Cumberland, then walked on toward Freemason. He came in sight of Mary and Mosely standing on the corner of a lane, so engrossed with each other that neither noticed the man who concealed himself in a shadow nearby. That was the end of the romance. In a minute or two, the fellow flew into a rage, exposed himself suddenly to the lovers, and proceeded M. S. S. Mary screamed and ran toward home, leaving the two men hurling fists and profanity at each other. It is said that when her supposed husband reached home that night he beat her severely also. But Jim Barlowe, as he called himself, was still in the dark as to Mosely's name, and his place of employment, and whatever plans the two lovers made in the mansion on Freemason street during working hours will forever remain unknown. We will skip over the next few days and take up the story again on January 10. That morning Mary arrived at her place of employment at the usual hour, about seven-thirty. She worked all day and finished at the usual time, starting for home around eight o'clock—a cold, black January night. Mary Vivian Barlowe was never seen alive again! An old man by the name of John Wilkins stumbled upon her dead body lying in a vacant lot three blocks from her home and notified the police immediately. Her throat was slashed from ear to ear. There were only two known pe Illustrated Feature Section MARY DWE? stumbled upon Mary Vivian sons who might have hated or loved Mary enough to take her life—the man who called himself Jim Barlowe, and Robert Mosely, her secret lover. At the inquiry into the death all three, including the man who discovered the body, proved their innocence. The old man proved by a number of witnesses, that he was in a barber shop on Queen street at the time of the murder, which was set at eight o'clock, and that he was making a short cut home at the time of the discovery. Robert Mosely, who presented a picture of remorse, proved that he served his employer a whisky between 8:00 and 8:15, eating his own supper in the kitchen directly after he was dismissed. Jim Barlow proved without a doubt that he was in a saloon from 7:00 until 9:00. The officer who arrested him as he entered his front door stated that it was about 9:10 and that he was whistling. Thus all three men went free. His innocence proven, "Jim Barlowe" immediately disappeared. Why? Was he some revenging woman's erring husband? How did he come into Mary Barlowe's life and under what circumstances? These are questions that will probably go down the ages unanswered. What shall we do about divorce? Do parents display sufficient intelligence in regard to the sex life of their children? Shall the object of sex be procreation or recreation? What ought we tell our children? Should sex be a feminine as well as a masculine pleasure—and how? Why are people prudish? Is there any such thing as an illegitimate child? Is Birth Control desirable and necessary? Is lack of sex satisfaction driving people insane? Why do attitudes toward sex differ at various times and in various climes? Why and when is marriage a failure? How soon does a child learn about sex? Is sex jealousy foolish? These and a thousand other questions about our sex life in modern society are being asked by millions of thinking people today. Certainly these questions demand answers. People's minds are in a muddle. They are confronted with problems they find difficult to solve. What shall they do? To whom shall they go for advice? Young and old, we all want to know the answers to these very intimate questions. It is useless and foolish to say that such questions aren't nice, ladylike or gentlemanly; that it is immoral to ask them. People ask questions because there are certain forces in society and within themselves that make them cry for satisfactory solutions to these difficulties. In response to this widespread demand for authentic information on every phase of sex life, The Macaulay Company, a New York City publishing house, has recently published a book entitled, "Sex in Civilization." It is probably the most comprehensive work of its kind that has ever been published. In it are the views of thirty of the leading authorities on sex in the United States and abroad, with an introduction by the best known scholar of them all in this particular field, Havelock Ellis. Edited by V. F. Calverton and Samuel D. Schmahausen, it contains 719 pages of information, including biographical sketches of the authors, a bibliography and an index. For the first time in history, then, it is possible to find within the ecvers of one book a summary of the most expert information and opinion on the timely and ever-interesting subject of sex. To attempt to go into a detailed discussion of each of the thirty chapters would justify the writing of another book. But such is not necessary and certainly not desired by the average reader. What is wanted, doubtless, is a sort of summary that will give the reader an outline of the contents of this monumental work that, despite its bulk, sells for merely five dollars. This I shall herein attempt to do. Contrary to general belief, sex attitudes have been quite as variable and changing as clothing fashions and governments. At some periods the mother has been the head of the family and some times the father. At some periods and in some countries, people have worshipped sex and the genitalia while at other times and in other places, such practices have been repugnant. Suffice to say however, that all of our present day religions and many of those that have gone into oblivion, have had their origin in sex worship and many of them still contain much of sex symbolism. These things can be easily understood when it is explained that early or so-called primitive peoples were profoundly interested in the change of seasons and the growth of crops. They looked upon Nature as a bountiful Mother-God; and thought that the grains and fruits were her children along with the human beings. Because of the moon's regular rotations, they used it as the basis of their calendars and understood its influence on the tides and the weather, they began to worship it as the goddess of fertility and procreation, the chief representative of Nature. This was the beginning of religion among most of the primitive peoples. The dances and ceremonies with which she was worshipped were always frankly sexual. These early societies were communistic. Usually descent was traced from the mother only. The father was of secondary importance. Land, villages, streams and hunting grounds were owned not by individuals but by the clan and the tribe. There was no private property as we know it, except in the possession of trinkets, weapons and clothes. There was practically no trade, no money and government was very simple. Women were the equals of men in everything. In many cases they ruled the tribes. Men did the hunting and fighting; women did the gardening and cared for the home. In such societies there were problems of sex but not many, and those were easily solved. All children belonged to the tribe so there was no such thing as illegitimate children. Divorce was a matter of mutual consent because these so-called savages realized that it was unjust to force people to live together who did not care for each other no matter for what reason. There were hardly any crazy or "funny" people; because, realizing that most of these mental aberrations and diseases are derived almost wholly from unsatisfactory sex train- The Stormy Career of Jack Johnson THE FIGHTER John Arthur (Jack) Johnson as he was in fighting trim, during his fight upwards for the heavyweight championship of the world. With the growth and development of these primitive societies (a few of which still remain in out-of-the-way corners of the globe), came the domestication of animals, struggles between tribes over land and hunting rights, the birth of war, the capture of prisoners, their use as slaves — after a period of cannibalism during which they were added to the tribal larder—and finally the birth and growth of the institution of private property. Instead of working and fighting for the tribe, men primarily sought to look out for themselves. They were reluctant to die and leave the fruits of their struggles to society, and out of this desire grew the paternal family, headed by the father and in which the mother was subordinate. Equality of the sexes came to an end. The subjugation of women be- The Story of John Arthur (Jack) Johnson as he was upwards for the heavyweight champion JACK JOHNSON—in the ring, and out. The name of Jack Johnson is almost as familiar in every corner of WILLIAMS No. agan. In the subsequent struggle for wealth and power between men, the women became their chattels instead of their partners, and so it has largely remained to the present day. The reason for this is clear to the student of economics and sociology. The way in which people make their living and the organization of society arising from it, shapes the customs, laws, literature, morals and religion of society. So long as there was economic equality, there was also sex equality. When economic inequality crept in, sex inequality followed it. In most of civilization this inequality of the sexes is still apparent in the laws and customs. The woman has had to take second place. The children have been sur-named after the fathers. The man has been recognized as the head of the family. His word has been law and our Christian marriage ceremony makes the wife promise to obey without requiring the husband to swear likewise. In a civilization where private property was God, women came also to be looked upon as chattels with ormy Ca of Jack J he was in fighting trim, during his fight championship of the world. the earth as that of the world's hero, Colonel Charles A. The author's style is frank, warm and intimate. Nevertheless, he manages to remain at a safe distance from personal bitterness, thereby writing an unusually detached true story of his stormy career. The author begins with his first important ambition which seized upon him at twelve years of age. This unexplained fancy was to see Steve Brodie, the man who had become famous by leaping from Brooklyn bridge. For a young Texas colored boy to view such a celebrity as this, was analogous to the "cat looking at the queen." Every possible avenue to the realizing of this ambition was closed on account of color and the lack of finances. However, this did not deter the young fistle genius, for he soon boarded a f-eight at his home town. Galveston, and suffered as a stowaway all the way to Brooklyn. RENNEGARBE CAN'T DO NOTHIN' TILL — THE CREEPING THING A Story of Gruesome and Haunting Mystery August 31, 1929 SYNOPSIS THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF GRUSOME MURDERS IN SELWYN HOUSE. They have occured in the octagonal tower rooms, a mysterious addition to the house. It was built by old Ezra Selwyn years before, on his return from a tragic stay in Haiti where his young bride, Mary, has been lost in the voodoo infested jungles. The tragedy has made him an eccentric reeluse. He lives in the house alone save for his two Haitian servants, Diaron and his wife, Meme. Ezra himself is the first one murdered. Each murder is preceded and followed by the sound of some huge reptilian body being dragged over an une fruceis caovensSTAOIN ETAOIN NNN uneven surface. But there are no entrances to the room large enough to admit such a body and no apparent hiding places. The bodies have disappeared one by one until the last one, the giantess detective, Alene Hardmore, who is killed in an effort to investigate the mystery, Her body is watched by detective Tom Frederick and his friend and co-worker, Alec Jones, until the undertaker, Al Jarton, comes for it. But—the next day that body is stolen from the undertaking establishment, presumably by Garland Selwyn, a nephew of the elder man, whose mother is a Haitian voodoo priestess. The bodies have all been scaled; and, after the mysterious disappearance of old Meme's body, an Indian scalping knife is found with a few strands of long black hair attached to its blood-stained blade. Detective Frederick and Al Jarton subsequently interviewed Diaron, who attributes the Selwyn mystery to Zombies, which he claims are supernatural beings which often act in this manner. Diaron is so sincere in his belief that this will account for the Sewlyn house murders, that detective Frederick and Al Jarton regard the tale very carefully. In the meantime, it is discovered that Garland Selwyn has suddenly left the Beal House on Maine street, where he has been lodging. Detective Frederick and Al Jarton then make an appointment with Alee Jonas to confer at the Beal House. The three of them meet there in order to find out more about the suspicious movements of Garland Selwyn. Detective Frederick and his associates find a clue at the Beal House. They also find that Garland Selwyn has left suddenly with an old woman whose identity is unknown. In the hope that he will discover further clues, Detective Frederick engages Garland Selwyn's empty room. He then finds a body, strapped and bound mysteriously, in the Beal house. Alec, his companion, drives up in a Ford but disappears mysteriously. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY. INSTALLMENT XI. REELING, like one drunken, Amanda Beal fell into my arms. From the open door behind her came the sound of scuffling, fleeing footsteps, but they died away without the appearance of any other human being emerging from that yawning front door of Beal House. The terror that had sent me automatically toward an investigation of that which had terrified me, still gripped my very soul. Yet, I would not own myself beaten. I held the limp body of the owner and occupant of the house before me in a firm if somewhat tremulous grasp. The rain still fell in a lessening drip—drip of slackening force. The faint moon again rode high in a clearing vault of blue-black. After the first wild searching of the scene about me for some other human presence, I turned my attention to the woman in my arms. She had fainted. The small maid who helped about in the day went home at night. It would be many hours before she was supposed to return for the new day's duties. In spite of the unknown terrors to which I might be exposing myself and in spite of the horror of that rigid bloodstained body that I had glimpsed for one dreadful moment in that upper room, I started toward the open door before me. Half dragging, half carrying the limp form of Amanda Beal, I came at length to the threshold. Mysterious Help. As I struggled to lift her across that threshold I sensed rather than saw the pair of arms outstretched from within to help me. I did not hesitate to permit the help. Terror had reached the point with me where it could do no more. I was bewildered and yet I was determined to follow through to the end. It was not until I was inside the hall that I relaxed my own hold. Then "Ssh"—the person who had aided me uttered the sound. With the perfect obedience of an automaton I paused in the shadowed darkness, holding my breath. For a long moment we stood thus in the silence, my mysterious companion and I, the inert body supported between us. Then in a low-voiced whisper that carried in a strangely-familiar manner the words to my ear, my companion spoke again. "Follow me. I will carry the body. He is at his old tricks and we must be quick or it may be too late. Make no sound and leave the doors open behind you. We may need to go out very quickly and—" Somewhere in the darkness about us we heard a faint creaking. The voice ceased, abruptly. The creaking stopped immediately. We stood still for a minute, but there was no further indication of another human presence in the gray-black shadowy place. Cautiously and carefully, guided by my dimly-seen companion, I advanced toward the back of the long narrow hall. At the end, after a slight listening pause, carefully and noiselessly he freed one hand and opened a door. The darkness enveloped the room beyond. With a motion that I interpreted to mean that I was to follow with my end of our common burden, I entered. I knew by my memory of the room, when we had traversed its width. Somehow I was not surprised that no indication came that our goal was not yet at hand. There was another slight pause and another darker square yawned suddenly before us. I knew that the room we had traversed was the dining room where earlier in the day I had sat at tea with Alec and Al Jarton. I knew also that in the direction we had gone there had been no visible opening. Putting my knowledge of these things with what was happening, I knew that the yawning opening was a secret passage. Where it might lead, I did not know. Who it was that led me, I knew not either. But once embarked on this jour- ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION ney, I was determined to keep on till I knew something. We stepped inward and down. stepped inward and down. The darkness had taken on an added quality of denseness. I knew that we were in a descending passage although the incline was very gentle and devoid of steps. It was a gradually sloping pathway of hard packed earth. My companion and guide seemed to be familiar with it even in the blackness of its heavy silence. He proceeded unerringly and without hesitation, as if he knew there was no danger of mishap. We had proceeded so for perhaps three minutes, although it seemed an age to my suspense sharpened senses, when I thought I heard a faint sound behind me. Evidently my companion heard also. With a sibilantly whispered admonition he quickened his steps. I felt a slight difference in the direction of the path. It was rising more steeply than it had fallen. The woman in our arms began to stir convulsively. "Be careful there are steps there." The whisper checked me. I eased my part of the now semi-conscious burden to a more comfortable position for climbing and set my feet carefully on the first step of a short stairway. After a brief period of climbing, there was a slight pause and then an oblong square that I knew was a door glimmered through the blackness. As we stepped through, the woman gave a convulsive movement that freed her entirely from our grasp. A smothered cry accompanied the movement. It was cut off by the hand of my companion across the mouth of the woman. I blinked in the half light and recognized the man who had guided me to this spot. The man wa Dr. Varant, the coroner. The place was the outhouse where I had recently left my packing case when I found the ladder from which I had peeped into the upper room at Beal House. As Dr. Varant looked at me, I saw that he was as surprised as I had been. "Wh—, wh—" he began in a shed. startled voice, but his question was cut short by a sudden noise from the entrance to the subterranean passage by which we had approached the Anxious as he seemed to be about my obviously unsuspected identity, the coroner seemed even more concerned to evade the presence of the persons or person who might be expected on the heels cf the approaching sounds. Amanda Beal, who had suddenly seemed to gain assurance with her regained consciousness, at the discovery of our identity, was equally alert and seemed to be perfectly in accord with the big bronze yellow doctor as, with finger to lip, he slipped quietly and swiftly through the silently opened door. I followed. Outside, the night was still heavy with shadow but the rain had ceased. Without words, I sped after the two persons whose mysterious actions I felt sure had reason and meaning behind them—reason and meaning that would eventually lead me to the solution of the horrible mystery of Selwyn House, its octagonal tower room, and the mysterious and sinister murders so recently and inexplicably committed by what, for lack of other name, we all called The Creeping Thing. In less than the time it takes to tell it, the three of us were once again in the shelter of the wood which I had traversed a few short hours before. Uppermost in my mind was the question of Alec. Was he lying somewhere out in the night wounded and alone or—I hesitated to formulate the thought in my own mind—was he perhaps beyond all human hope or aid, another victim of the dread thing that held the entire community in its grip? Who had driven the dilapidated Ford in which I had confidently expected to find the companion of my youth and manhood at the steering wheel? Who had been blowing the horn and then had so mysteriously disappeared as I started to climb inside? While these questions were running wildly through my mind, I was following the strangely swift and certain flight of the two persons ahead. Dr. Varant, once within the concealing safety of the trees, had produced a flashlight with which he charted our way. At length, as the growth became denser, he threw the beam backward and from side to side at intervals. Then, when he had reached the final boundary that separated the wide space of the forest-grown confines of Beal House grounds from the highway, he paused and turned toward me. "I didn't know you were in on this. ```markdown ``` For a long moment we stood thus in the silence . . . the inert body supported between us. Frederick?" he said, abruptly and a bit belligerently, it seemed to me. "I had hoped to handle it by myself—I believe, from the nature of things, I could do it better." It seemed to me that there was a sort of hesitating consideration in the man's words—consideration and concern. "I don't know just what you mean, Varant," I replied, "but if you 'hink the mystery of this thing is likely to get my goat, you're badly mistaken. I own it's a hair-raising proposition, but I've had hair-raising experiences before this, and—come through." I stopped at the queer look on the man's face. It seemed to me that it was almost one of compassion. Amanda Beal had stood listening without seeming interest but now she spoke. "It isn't the lack of courage we've been thinking about, Thomas," she said, "It's—" she paused abruptly as though at some secret signal from Dr. Varan. "Well, I think we are close to a solution of the whole thing now," the man broke in with a note of authority. "Will you trust to me a few hours, Frederick?" he wheeled and darted a keenly questioning glance in my direction. "I assure you that I am as anxious to clear this thing up as you are. I have certain knowledge of scientific facts that you lack and, believe me, it is necessary to be wary in the prosecution of what is dangerous procedure and one fraught with many mysterious angles even yet." He waited for my reply. I stood for a long moment in thought. He waited for my reply. I stood for a long moment in thought. "I will trust you." I answered at length gravely. Little did I know just how great was to be the test of my faith. Beyond the line of wood, I followed Dr. Varant and Amanda Beal diagonally across the commons. At length I saw looming through the darkness a big parked car. As we approached it, I saw a figure rise up from the back seat. It was Diar... An Old Woman Huddled beside him was a second figure. Beal as she entered, I saw that the huddled figure was an old, old woman. Her hair, partially concealed by a sort of cowl that was attached to the dark cape she was enveloped in, was white as snow. Her lined face was like old ivory, out of which peered a pair of dark eyes that were like deep pools reflecting horror and an eternal fear. Diaron had his arm about the woman as if he were shielding her from that horror. I climbed into the front seat beside Dr. Varant without asking questions. He backed the big closed car and turned around. We sped into the night toward Selwyn House. It was still night when we reached the sinister place that was our goal. The dense darkness that preceded the dawn lay over the world still as the great carved doors swung open to receive us. Diaron came last still protectingly holding the old woman in the shelter of his arm. I recalled the old woman who had been with Garland Selwyn and wondered. Once inside, at a low spoken direction from the coroner, Diaron and Amanda Beal turned off into the lower room underneath the room abutting on the mysterious octagonal tower above. "You will come with me, please, Frederick. There is dangerous work afoot from now on." Without further question I followed. At the long narrow corridor, the man ahead paused and turned to me. Neither did this deter the hungry and footsore youngster who, never ending his search, wandered into New York, where he met the notorious Chuck O'Conner, then known and feared as the mayor of the Bowery. Chuck befriended him on several occasions. From New York, he journeyed to Boston, and worked in the stables of the Back Bay elite. One day while exercising a horse his right leg was broken. This served to remind him of the safety of his mother's hearth, so as soon as he was sufficiently recovered, he returned to Galveston. Johnson was then thirteen years of age and was not far removed from the incident that established confidence in his fighting ability. One day his sister Lucy urged him to defend himself against odds of exceedingly discouraging proportions. Jack was attacked in the streets by a man considerably larger and older than himself. This tough was respected and feared (mostly feared) for miles around. Jack was then but sixteen, while Pierson was a grown, hardened man. However, the severe beating received by the latter was such as to put him into utter oblivion. From that day Jack was known as "Lil" Arthur—a name later made famous by "Tad," the famous writer and cartoonist. At seventeen years of age, Jack fought one Klondike, which netted him $25.00, which was speedily lost in the races. The races took many purses from the ambitious youngster. Jack's hectic jail career began early, for, after returning to Galveston, he engaged in a bout which caused him to be lodged in jail for violating the Texas anti-boxing law. And it was not until Jack sacrificed nearly every possible gain and advantage that this encounter was staged. The purse was $35,000 and Jack's share was a mere $5,000. Burns made every possible objection. He quibbled about the referee, the purse, the time, the place and several other matters, while Jack determined to bring the fight about conceded every issue. He had no doubt of the outcome and could afford to make concessions. Burns was lambasted and belabored in such a fashion that it was weeks before he was able to derive any comfort from mere existence, irrespective of his becoming presentable. It is true that this fight was a "frame up for freedom." However, it was due to the fact that the great champion a much persecuted individual, wished to see once more his true friends and loved ones. That Willard could in no way match wits with Jack is amply pointed out in the fact that Jack had to constantly urge him to land a blow even though it was well known to Willard that upon a certain signal Jack was to relinquish the championship. Perhaps one of the greatest difficulties Jack experienced in the ring was finding a blow sufficiently severe to justify an appearance of taking the count. It is frequently stated that Jack never possessed a genuine appreciation for colored women, consequently his marriage to white women. But this is highly exaggerated. In the chapter entitled, "Romances and Regrets," he explains how it was the deep heartaches caused by two colored women that turned him to white women. This, coupled with the flourishing state of the saloon and the houses of pros- titution, made life for most wives a lonely and miserable existence, and accounts in a large measure for that state of mind which smug and self- satisfied men are pleased ‘to call feminine. ‘This unhealthy and pernicious at- titude toward. sex and all things sexual was transferred in turn to each generation of children. This training began almost in the cradle when by shouts and frowns the youngsters were taught that anything connected with sex was wrong, sin- ful, and bad. As a result each gen- eration grew up inhibited “and re- Pressed, neurotic and sexually unfit. The contributors to “Sex in Civili- zation” show that, directly as a re- sult of this early training, the in- fluence of social pressure and the wild economic struggle between men introduced by the industrial revolu- tion, the majority of married wom- en’s sex lives are highly unsatisfac- tory where not unbearable; that in- sanity is rapidly on the increase; that sex perversion continues to grow by leaps and bounds; that the fun- damental cause of most divorces ~is none other than sex dissatisfaction; that sex jealousy is primarily due to the private property complex of men coupled with the secret knowledge be their sexual ineptitude or impo- nee. - ~ Furthermore, it is shown that vast numbers ,of marriages are spoiled by the unhealthy . attitude toward sex taught to children by their parents; and that generally this inequality of the sexes, subordination of wom- en, the property concept applied to sex, and the repressions induced by ignorant sex training have made of our contemporary sex life something of a nightmare. Happily, counter forces are always at work. With the growth of the industrial system, the lessening importance of the individ- ual, the struggle over wages between employers and employees and the exalting of the democratic dogma, came the introduction of women in- to industry and finally their enfran- chisement as the capstone sealing their new economic independence. Men were no longer able to sup- port a home without assistance. The standard of living was outstripping the wage scale. Wives and daughters had to enter industry and help share the burden. Women could now earn their own living and wouldn’t tol- erate the old-time dictation from men. ‘Their range of sexual selec- tion broadened -with their widened economic opportunities, The old standards of modesty went by the board. Short skirts, bobbed hair, rouge, peace, lip stick, former- ly considered the accessories of “loose ladies” now came universally into use. Women began to openly flirt with men as men had formerly flirt- ed with women. And why not? Were not the sexes economically equal? With the ability of a woman to earn her own way, could any one stop her from possessing the same rights and privileges as men? Man-made laws and customs were shocked. Con- servatives howled their condemna- tion. Clergymen said the world was going to the devil. Philosophers and deep thinkers shook their heads. du- biously. But the sexual revolution continued. It still continues. More people are studying sex and all its ramifications than ever before. Women openly criticize men for their shortcomings. Females hold political office, vote and work alongside men on the job. They insist on being treated as equals and are treated as equals to an increas- ing extent because they are no longer dependent on men for their daily bread. Birth control is almost universally felt to be a necessity and there. is a widespread agitation for the general teaching of it to married couples and ‘all who seek the infor- mation. A new attitude toward children born out of wedlock is also developing and society is realizing its duty toward them. ‘The contributors to this excellent volume feel that these social trends should be expedited, not only for the good of society but for the good of the individuai. It-is held that there can be no sane sex life in our civil- ization unless by law and custom men and women are equal; unless they are partners and pals in every sense of the word. To this end a calm and unhypocritical study of sex and the art of fove is not only desirable but absolutely necessary if society is to retain its health and sanity.
