good-looking, neat appearing young men, kept up their father's work, getting out the farm crop and doing what they knew their father would have wished.
Doctor Talbott was the community's favorite physician, and was known to be worth considerable money. However, when the time came for a settlement of his debts, the family encountered no little difficulty in raising the required amount of money, making it known at the moment that they knew positively nothing about what had become of Doctor Talbott's wealth. They were barely able to meet the expenses of the funeral after squaring Doctor Talbott's out-standing debts.
Of course the public was mystified. And to aggravate the matter, there had been no arrests made. This provoked the community more than the disappearance of Talbott's wealth. The people residing in the town of Arkoe, Missouri, where the crime took place, insisted upon the authorities making a more strenuous effort to apprehend the murderer.
At this particular stage of the game, several rumors were afloat. One of these had to do with the evidence recently unearthed, that the Talbott boys were acting "queer." The meaning of "queer" was not obvious. Next, a stranger had appeared at the farm, and was working as a hand. This individual was unknown. Mrs Talbott simply said he had appeared at the back door of the house one morning and asked for employment; and because her boys were behind with their work, she had hired him on the spot. This merely caused further uncertainty.
The authorities made no effort to thoroughly investigate the situation. They seemed content to sit back and wait. Eventually interest in the matter considerably diminished. The killer had planned his crime well, and the authorities were completely baffled.
This was one side of the question. On the other side several people were working frantically and religiously, to bring the matter to a head. They had certain suspicions and were doing their best to confirm them. They had even employed a private detective, a man with a splendid reputation for detecting crime and unearthing obstinate clues. What surprised the community was the fact that Talbott's hand and the private detective were one and the same. Of course this was not revealed until the detective came forward with the evidence which caused the sheer effort to make a special trip to the Talbott farm, and to place the two brothers under arrest for the murder of their father. The private investigator disclosed the startling fact that the Talbott boys

WHEN his sons killed him, Doctor Perry M. Talbott, rugged old Missourian left
his money hidden so well, that it took many years to find even a trace of its whereabouts. Only recently has the mystery of the hidden gold been partly solved. The remarkable deductions of Mr. Charles Martin, a self-educated historian, have been largely responsible for the partial solution.
A shotgun exploded in the window of the Talbott farmhouse. With a low moan and clutching spasmodically at his breast, Doctor Perry M. Talbott pitched headlong to the floor, dead.
Mrs. Talbott was with her husband at the time and although completely unnerved, she managed to call a doctor. Afterwards, she gave a detailed account of the happening, which, although vague, furnished the authorities a clue. The sheriff immediately went to work.
This took place in the late '80's, created a state wide sensation and intrigued the interest of the public. Doctor Talbott's two sons,
Charles Martin, whose account of the Talbott murder case was the most interesting and accurate of the entire investigation.

had destroyed the life of their father because of his extreme cruelty to their mother.
The authorities sought to drag the truth from the set lips of the brothers and failed, only because the boys, realizing that they had talked too freely to the detective, were determined to talk no more.
During the trial, the following bits of evidence were forced from the defendants: They did not know what Doctor Talbott had done with his money. Yes, they knew he had left considerable money somewhere, possibly in some hidden place which would be difficult to find. They thought there was at least fifty thousand dollars, though they were not sure. Their father had been exceptionally partial to gold.
They had seen many different kinds of gold coins in his possession. He never kept any green-backs about him, and thought they were a nuisance.
They refused to tell of their disclosures to the detective. Hence,

ment the brothers caught a sight of him they knew they had been trapped. They gave up without a struggle.
The Talbott boys were convicted and sentenced to be hanged. They met their fate on the same gallows, when a double trap was sprung. It was the first double hanging in the state and it took place in an open pasture, where hundreds of people could see the gruesome spectacle. The boys met their death unflinchingly. The people of the community claim today, that the Talbott brothers were innocent and died to protect the real killer.
The farmer sacked it up and carried it away. And it was not a dream; for the Talbott gold was there. He had paid one hundred dollars even for the house.
Strangely enough, no one had ever examined the walls of the House of Hidden Gold.
Mr. Charles Martin, influential colored citizen of the county seat, also connected with the Farmer's Trust Company Bank, became an authority on the case. Although he was only a small boy at the time What had become of the hidden gold? That was the question, and no one knew the answer to it. The old Talbott place was called the House of Hidden Gold; while searches and excavations were made there without result.
Recently a poor farmer, while moving the house, heard something rattle to the floor and roll away, dropping from a hole in the unplastered wall. When he looked, he caught his breath. A pile of gold coin burned his eyes.
the latter had to make full revelation. He had led the boys into talking about their father one evening after becoming well acquainted with them. The conversation then was as follows: "We've got something to be careful about," one of the brothers had said. This when the detective pretended to be a fugitive from justice, himself. "We're like you, in the same boat. What did you do back in New York that made you come here and hide?" The detective told them that he had killed a man.
"Was it as bad as that?" one of the brothers interrogated. "Every bit as bad," confessed the investigator somberly. "In fact, if I were to go back to that state they would send me to the electric chair." "What would you say if we were to tell you that we, too, had committed a murder?" asked the oldest brother. "I'd sympathize with you," the detective proclaimed. "I know what it means." "Well," said the oldest of the Talbott brothers, "we did. We killed our father. Shot him through the window with a sawed-off shotgun; and the sheriff has been out here several times looking around and acting like he suspected something. But he ain't got a thing on us. There's nothing he can do without evidence." "Did you ever tell this to anyone else?" the investigator inquired. They shook their heads simultaneously. They most

emphatically had not. Moreover, they didn't ever intend to tell it; and furthermore, they wanted the detective to understand that if he gave them away he'd never live to tell a second version of the story. Besides, they had it on him. He had willingly, of his own accord, confessed to having killed a man, and they thought they could send him to the chair if he tried to send them to the gallows.
That was that. But the detective was not satisfied and tried to get more information. Did they know what had become of their father's enormous wealth, or did they know the total wealth?
They said they didn't know a thing about the money, but wished they did. They'd take it and get out of the country. However, the gold had been carefully hidden and dead men did not tell tales. They stated further that the old gentleman's wealth had amounted to more than fifty thousand dollars at the time of his demise. This, it was believed, was primarily in gold.
After this, the detective was unable to obtain any more information of a worth while nature. The next morning he saddled his horse and rode to town. The next time the Talbott boys saw him he appeared at the house with the sheriff and had undergone a remarkable transformation in appearance, being neatly and expensively attired in gray tweed, with gold rimmed spectacles. over to America long before
Columbus. At least that is the
theory set forth by Prof.
Weiner of Harvard Univer-
sity-in his book: “Africa and
the Discovery of America.”
The Gold Coast is so called
because of the quantity of
fine gold to be found in its
streams and even in the
streets of the towns after the
rainy season. It was gold
and the slave trade that had
first brought the Europeans
there. A large proportion of
the Negroes who were
brought to the New World
came from this region.
The Ashantis are a very
proud people, and not with-
out cause. For two centuries
they had not only dominated
their neighbors but had
fought off the Europeans
who sought to take away
their country.
The British and the Dutch
were both compelled to pay
tribute to the Ashanti kings,
and several British expedi-
tions sent against them were
defeated.
Expedition Annihilated
In 1823, a British expedition com-
manded by Sir Charles MacCarthy
was killed to a man. A cast of Sir
Charles’s skull was made in gold and
used as a drinking cup’by King Kwa-
ka, while the skull itself was placed
in the fetish-house, (A fetish house ts
the equivalent of the church in civi-
lised lands).
For the next four years the Brit-
tish tried to conquer Ashanti in vain,
and finally had to make a treaty by
which they paid rent for the land
they held. “The white man” laughed
King Kwaka, “bring many cannon
to the bush, but the bush is stronger
than the cannon.”
In wealth, the Ashantis also rank-
ed with the richest peoples in Africa.
Thomas Bowditch, who went to make
a treaty with them for England, said
in his report:
“The chiefs, as did their superior
captains and attendants, wore Ash-
anti cloths of extravagent price made
from the costly foreign silks .which
had been unravelled to weave them
. + , and massive gold necklaces in-
tricately wrought.
“Some wore necklaces reaching to
the navel, entirely of aggry beads;
a band of gold and beads encircled
the knees from which several strings
of the same depended; small circles
of gold, like guineas, rings, and casts
of animals were Soe around their
ankles . . . and rude lumps of rock-
gold hung from their left wrists
which were so heavily laden as to be
supported on the heads of the hand-
somest boys. :

how for several months dur-

waited with breathless in-

events that were happening
in King Prempeh’s capital,
Coomassie.
I said King Prempeh and
the Golden Stool, but if one
is to deal with them in order
of importance, it would be
better to say: The Golden
Stool and King Prempeh, for
it is the former that,is the
real hero of this story.
King Prempeh’s people,
the Ashantis, gave him up
readily enough when over-
awed by British cannon, but
when an English governor
expressed his desire only to
to sit on the Golden Stool,
England had a costly little

Great Warriors.
The Ashantis are the most
warlike people in West Af-
rica. Their history dates
back to the dimmest antiquity
and some historians say that
they are the descendants of
those civilized Ethiopians
who were driven southwards
by the conquering Egyptians
as told by Herodotus and
Diodorus Siculus, ancient his-
torians.
As to the Ashantis, many
of them, like the Brahmins,
believe that they came direct-
ly from heaven.
The Ashantis, along with
other peoples on the Gold
Coast, had traded with the
Phoenicians before Christ
was born, and with Europe
for hundreds of years. Ash-
anti trade with France began
in 1366, and with England
in 1672. Further, it is as-
serted that black men from

A powerful army of 3,000 European soldiers, and regiments of West Indians and African soldiers, as well as the Fanti and their native allies, under Lord Wolseley, marched on Coomassie. The Ashantis fought with their traditional valor, but the long distance cannon of the whites triumphed, and Lord Wolseley, entering King Kofi's capital, burnt it to the ground. King Kofi was forced to sign a treaty by which he pledged to pay 50,000 ounces of gold and to keep the road which the conquerors had made to his capital, open and in good condition.

- Most of the agreement ended in promise, however, for soon after the British withdrew the Ashanti regained the upper hand. They paid a small part of the indemnity only; as to the road, it soon grew up again in bush.
King Prempeh
This brings us down to the year 1896 and to King Premuhe
Prempeh (Kwaka Dua III) had come to the throne at the age of 16, and was now 20. He had inherited, as was the custom, through the female line. His family had been on the throne since 1635.
The young king was beset by many difficulties. England had gone into his country, as was said, and had disorganized it, after which the native tribes were left to fight it out among themselves. But on the accession of King Prempeh, the British had again begun to interfere in native affairs.
As Sir F. C. Fuller says: "The government policy of non-interference in Ashanti affairs so long adhered to by the Coast authorities had now been definitely abandoned; but the interference was all directed against, instead of in support of, the central power. This rendered Prempeh's task all the more difficult and gradually discouraged and embittered him and the court party. Prempeh, only it was beset by the gravest difficulties."
Prempeh, however, did his best to establish cordial relations with the British. He wrote a friendly letter to the Prime Minister saying that he hoped Her Majesty's government would give him all assistance and good advice for the well-governing

Our letter this week is from a perturbed young man in the gay metropolis of New York.
My dear Mrs. Jerome:
I have been keeping company on very lovely terms with a young lady for the past six months. But lately she has grown very critical of me. The last time I called on her she spent twenty minutes talking over the phone to someone. In fact, I left before the conversation was over but scribbled her a note saying I "thanked" her for such shabby treatment. It has now been a week and she has not called me. What shall I do, shall I call her?

Now, I believe that you committed the same error of which you accuse her. You left because you were "critical" of her telephone conversation. Your note too, as sarcastic. dim light is the arched roof.
Notre Dame has had many ups and downs in its long history. The rulers of France used to be crowned here—among them, Napoleon and Josephine. Once also it was used as a wine-shop and a dance-hall. That was during the revolution when the statues of the saints were thrown down and those of Voltaire and Rousseau were reared in their places. Again during the revolt of 1831, the students of the Latin Quarter set it on fire but the fire was extinguished.
Today ceremonies of great importance are held there, the most recent being the funeral of Marshal Foch. Notre Dame is the largest cathedral in France and the fourth in size in the world.
It has two great towers. We shall climb one of them to get a view of the city.
Up we mount a great stone stair, eaten by time, winding and winding around, stopping to take breath from time to time for it is several hundred feet up, and when it was built people hadn't thought of elevators. At last we get near the top and enter a narrow winding stair which is so dark that although one is high up in the air he might as well be in the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky at midnight without a light. The sole guides are one's fingers, and as others may be coming down while one is going up one had better make a noise of some kind to avoid a collision. At last we reach the top and look out on a dark weather-beaten mass of buildings, relieved by the red of the innumerable chimney; and the green trees, for Paris is a city of wooded avenues and boulevards; and

Has Prettiest Bright Hair In All New York
The part which exquisite Virginia Wheeler contributes to the success of "Connie's Hot Chocolates." New York's musical hit conceived by Leonard Harper, is attributed to her gorgeous bright, smooth hair as much as her beautiful features.
"My hair looks so soft, even and full of life because I make it that way," says Miss Wheeler. "If you were to see it before I fix it with La-Em-Strait hair dressing you would wonder how I manage it because it does not stay so beautifully brushed by itself La-Em-Strait keeps it in place and gives it that luster as I brush it."
La-Em-Strait is very popular with the men too because it is so easy to use and is not greasy. Takes only 30 seconds to make the most stubborn and unmanageable hair smooth and bright. That's why more than a million folks prefer it. All drug stores have the 25c and 50c packages.

Stepin Fetchit has made a name for himself. He is earning a tremendous salary, not because of luck but because of real talent. He is using his natural ability, just as you may be able to do.
Your handwriting may not look like these specimens written for us by Stepin Fetchit, but just the same,
you may have talent along other lines, or may show a fitness for an entirely different part in the movie world.
Stepin's writing snows first of all, that he is a builder of a great many air castles; he likes to dream about doing things worth while. He likes to build fairy castles, and plan on doing things very worth while. He thinks quickly, and has a good deal of imagination. This helps him in his movie career just as does the emotional side of his nature. He is warm-hearted, kindly, sympathetic, and quite generous.
This writing shows that Stepin Fetchit has a good memory. He likes to read, or to be in an educated atmosphere. He likes to dance, and shows real talent for this. He has a good sense of humor, and is very loyal to what he believes to be right. He has a good share of determination, and is not easily discouraged. He is not quarrelsome. He doesn't spend his time getting into trouble. He may have a good many disappointments, but he doesn't get angry

COFFEE HOT AND COFFEE
COLD
Almost every one appreciates a good cup of hot coffee. Many, however, do not realize the value of a demi tasse in the early morning or a glass of iced coffee in the afternoon when the weather is hot. Coffee is a deliciou beverage, mildly stimulating, and, according to authorities, is beneficial to the great majority of persons.
Demi Tasse
Brew the coffee double strength according to your favorite method. Serve in small cups as the first item on the breakfast menu. This is a favorite with many hotels and railroad dining cars.
Iced Coffee
The coffee should be made extra strong and poured while hot into glasses filled with cracked ice. Melting of the ice will decrease the strength of the beverage. Pour cream into the glass to suit the taste and, if desired, add whipped cream.

He was known as Honest Charley, and his friends numbered many. In his leisure moments, Mr. Martin developed his ability to reconstruct facts of ancient happenings. His account of the Talbott case is intensely interesting. He said that when the money was found, it would be unearthed somewhere near the House of Hidden Gold, and it was. In fact, he was so accurate in his deductions that people remembered his disclosure in regard to the hiding place of the money. ductions, proving his opinions. Others made expensive excavations for miles around the scene of the murder. If his advice had been taken in the beginning, no doubt the money, at a much earlier date, would have been found.
His opinion of the way the murder was perpetrated would have made interesting reading, but he never put it in print. Mr. Martin was somewhat of a criminologist as well as historian. He made a thorough and able study of crime. If Charley Martin had furthered his interest in the Talbott case to the extent of buying the old house, he would have been more than fifty thousand dollars in profit. His interest was not of that nature.
The mystery of the hidden gold is no longer a mystery. The gold is now in circulation.

tained for Ashanti; I appreciate to the fullest its kindness."
The British thereupon replied that Ashanti had not lived up to the treaty of 1874; that it had not paid the indemnity nor kept the road open. Further to win moral support England accused the Ashantis of the rite of human sacrifice.
This accusation of human sacrifice has been raised against all West African peoples. The fact is those "sacrificed" were criminals and captives. The death penalty was inflicted for miner offenses; as in England and the United States of a century ago, men were hanged for theft and counterfeiting.
Might not a West African who saw a criminal being shot, guillotined, or electrocuted after a religious ceremony, ask in naivete what was the difference between his land and those of the Christians?
Killed to Terrorize
Further the object of killing captives and criminals was protection through terror, as in civilized lands. The story of human sacrifice, according to Sir Francis Fuller and others, who have lived in Ashanti, has been greatly exaggerated. Many of the more unbiased white writ-

the yellowish-green path of the river winding its way under a long succession of bridges. In the distance are the two gray minarets of the Cathedral of the Sacre Coeur poised on the cliffs of Montmartre; the faded gilt of the Invalides with Napoleon's tomb; the Arch of Triumph rising like an artificial mountain, with the tomb of the Unknown Soldier underneath; the dome of the Pantheon, where the great dead are buried; and many other historic buildings. The whole picture lies in a heart-shaped hollow edged with wooded hills.
Not far from Notre Dame is the Cluny Museum, an old palace which was built on the ruins of an old Roman palace and bath. It is filled with art treasures and curios, one of which is so singular that our modesty will not permit us to describe it.
When you come to Paris you'll have to see it for yourself for it is so strange that you won't believe it on hearsay. Suffice it to say that it is known as the Chastity Belt. The brave knights of old would put it on their wives before they left for war, lock it and take the key with them.
Another famous building is the Louvre. Once it was the palace of the Louises now it is an art museum. It is perhaps the largest building on earth, and its art treasures are worth hundreds of millions. One picture alone, the famous Mona Lisa, is worth five million dollars. There is also the original of the Venus de Milo, the Greek lady minus the arms, as well as the Statue of Victory. No art treasures out-rank these three in importance.
This building like Notre Dame has had many narrow escapes from destruction. In 1793, the mob entered and destroyed much of its treasures, and again in 1830, when Alexander Dumas succeeded in saving many valuable documents. Another palace nearby was levelled to the ground by the mob in 1871. This was the Tuileries. On its site is now a very beautiful garden.
Nearby this garden is the statue of Gambetta, famed patriot. In its place once stood a guillotine that lopped off thousands of heads during the revolution.
Passing through the Tuileries Garden we come to the Place de la Concorde, a magnificent square. several acres in extent, with splendid fountains and statues. In the centre is an immense obelisk brought from Egypt.
Where the obelisk now is, once stood another guillotine that chopped off the heads of more than 3,000 persons in five months.
Among the number were, Louis XVI, his beautiful queen, Marie Antionette, and one of the most charming women of all time, the exquisite Madame Roland. "Oh, Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name," were her last words—words that have become immortal. That revolution taught the rulers of the world a lesson. The excesses committed are unequalled in history.
The guillotine still works in France, The French people hold that it is surer and more humane than hanging or electrecution.

Finally the British with a large army marched on Coomassie. The Ashantis, also menaced by the Fantis, allowed the enemy to come on without resistance. King Prempeh received Governor Maxwell, and Colonel Scott, commander of the expedition and his staff in his palace. General Baden-Powell, hero of the Boer War, and founder of the Boy Scout movement, who took part in the expedition, describes the scene as follows:
"And there sits Prempeh, looking very bored as three scarletclad dwarfs dance before him amid the dense crowd of sword-bearers, court-criers, fly-catchers, and other officials. He looks a regal figure on a lofty throne with a huge velvet umbrella standing over him, upon his head a black and gold tiara and on his neck and arms large golden beads and nuggets of gold."
Prempeh, anxious to preserve the independence of his kingdom, offered to pay a huge indemnity. "I am willing to pay," he said, "and beg His Majesty's Government to take a first installment. Prempeh and his court did not arrive until eight and when he came the governor and Colonel Scott, and his aide were seated on a platform. The chiefs, were made to come one by one, and lay down their swords. Then, the governor, determined to humble Ashanti pride to the lowest, ordered the king and his mother to kiss the feet of himself and Colonel Scott.

An English war-correspondent described the ensuing scene as follows: "The king thereupon arose and taking off his crown and his slippers as bid, came forward to the platform with the queen-mother whose prettily formed feet were always bare. Together they slowly approached and bending down clasped with their hands and partly embraced the legs and booted feet of the governor. Then not without some natural dig-

At the sight of this supreme indignity to mother and son whose lightest word once might have meant life or death, King Prempeh's subjects stood as if turned to stone.
A heavy fine was placed on Prempeh, and he, his father, mother, and uncles were made prisoners, pending payment. All were imprisoned in Elmina Castle on the same territory for which white men had been paying rent to Ashanti kings for more than two hundred years.
Later King Prempeh was taken to Sierra Leone, and from thence to the Seychelles Islands off the east coast of Africa where he still lives a captive.
But the British were yet to pay dearly for the humiliation of the black monarch. Why, it may be asked, had the powerful Ashanti army surrendered without even throwing a spear?
